The BIOM 3 series continuously incorporate the
principle of indirect ophthalmoscopy in the operating
microscope.
For user’s comfort as well as patient’s benefi t it

The latest step of evolution of the non contact wide fi eld observation system BIOM 3c
incorporates easy handling as well as enlarged comfort for surgeon and staff
BIOM 3c provides:
• Motorized focus of the wide fi eld image
• Manual focusing, if necessary
• Fast mounting and connection with SDI 3c
• Focusing by combi foot switch while surgical instruments can remain
in working position

As opposed to the BIOM, the APL is a contact system which requires a contact medium and
delivers an inverted image with an angle of up to 130°. An image inverter SDI is required.
Features of BIOM 3

Easy Handling
When used to observe the vitreous and/or
fundus the BIOM 3 is aligned coaxially with
the operating microscope. During extraocular
phases of surgery the BIOM 3 is swung aside
out of the observation beam, while the
inverting action of the SDI is neutralized
manually or by remote control. The BIOM 3 is
easily detached from the operating microscope
by unplugging its adapter.
Easy Sterilization
• The BIOM 3m body and adapter plate
are fully autoclavable according to latest
recommendations.
• Ultrasound cleaning of the BIOM 3 also
possible.

OCULUS SDI
Stereoscopic Diagonal Inverter
Bimanual Surgery under
Natural Viewing Conditions
Wide angle systems such as BIOM or APL for
observation of the ocular fundus deliver an
inverted image, rendering them unsuitable for
bimanual vitreous surgery.
When used with the operating microscope the
SDI erects the inverted image of a wide-angle
observation system while maintaining correct
stereopsis, thus enabling vitreous surgery under
panoramic viewing conditions.
Easy Handling
The SDI is available in different versions while
the electrically powered version is the most
comfortable. The SDI 3c enables control of the
motorized focusing function of the BIOM 3c.
Simple Assembly
The SDI fi ts below the inclinable oculars of most
operating microscopes. In its neutral position
it normally does not interfere with the normal
beam path of the microscope. Therefore, it can
remain in place when the microscope is used for
purposes other than vitreo retinal surgery.
