Pooler follows his heart to Carthage Derek Wolff, Sports Editor Most kids would jump at an offer to play for a larger program, even in a diminished role. Liam Pooler is not most kids. The standout running back for Lake Forest High School during the 2016 season helped the Scouts earn an unexpected trip to the state quarterfinals. After growing up hearing stories about his father, an All-Big 10 running back at Northwestern, the younger Pooler will continue to run his course slightly further up Lake Michigan at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis. Pooler wasn’t set on football until eighth grade. One of his older brothers played hockey; one didn’t play sports at all. Despite their father’s pedigree within the game, Liam wasn’t pushed toward football either. “He told me, ‘do what you want and excel in what you do’”, Pooler said. Pooler explored baseball and wrestling, as well as football, in middle school. But after his freshman season he knew football was his game, so he joined the track team in an effort to get faster. By his junior year at <strong>LF</strong>HS, Pooler had earned a starting spot at cornerback on the Scouts’ varsity team. But when it came time for colleges to scout him, that was all they saw, a 5-foot-8-and-a-half cornerback. Pooler wanted to be something more and in 2016 he wound up being the team’s mainstay at running back on first and second down. He’ll begin his career at Carthage by playing running back, but the versatility the Red Men see in Pooler could expand his options, an idea that appealed to him over all other interested parties. “Any position on the field is natural for me and that’s how (Carthage) sees me, they see me as an athlete,” Pooler said. “I’ll start at running back but if they need me somewhere else they can play me there. Wherever I’m needed I’m going to play. Personally, and I think they think this too, I can play anywhere. I think I can do anything on the football field that they ask me to do.” Schools in the Pioneer Football League like Drake, Butler and Dayton took note of Pooler following his junior season, but he was left cold by their approach to see him play cornerback only. “They all saw me as a corner and just a corner and I didn’t feel like that was really fair to my athletic ability,” Pooler said. “I felt like that was decreasing my ability to just one position, whereas I saw myself as, and it sounds arrogant, but I just have the complete confidence in myself where I can do anything on the field. I wanted to be able to shine where people knew I could shine.” Carthage’s belief that Pooler could be something more ultimately set them apart, as similar opportunities arose from Augustana University and North Central College. The Red Men heavily recruited Pooler in late 2016 and a trip to the school’s campus on the shores of Lake Michigan, as well as it’s close proximity to his home in Lake Forest, did the trick. “Once I stepped in there the campus was beautiful, it’s right on the Lake,” he said. “I like to live by ‘you know when you know’. When I was visiting other schools I was forcing myself to see the good in them but with Carthage I saw the good right away. Whether he’s in line to be the team’s running back, in a supporting role or if he’s with the special teams unit, he’s just excited to be along for the ride. “For freshman year, it’s all about the team.” Carthage has him on a personalized workout program this summer, where he hopes to gain five pounds to build his frame to 185 lbs while still gaining speed, the ultimate factor at his position. “Speed kills,” he said. “If you’re the fastest guy on the field, it doesn’t matter how big you are, doesn’t matter how jacked you are, it’s going to be Index 28-29 - All-Area teams 27 - Athlete of the Week hard for anyone to tackle you.” And for someone who has always been on the smaller side, there’s nothing Pooler likes more than proving people’s misconceptions about him wrong, leaving him the perfect window of opportunity at Carthage. “I’ve been one of the smaller kids on each of my teams every year and that’s what’s awesome about football. You get to display your abilities and your team’s abilities without having to think about the outside world.” The Red Men open their 2017 season on the road at Aurora University on Sept. 2.
