Adaptive materials and structures are no longer just a concept<br />
for the researcher’s desk. We have come from simply trying<br />
to understand basic material properties to enabling basic<br />
mechanical function in major industrial systems. We have<br />
also fantasized about unusual “super” capabilities brought<br />
about by adaptive materials. Yet, the fi rst industrial products<br />
to routinely use them, applied them in relatively simple ways.<br />
As a result, two general trends have emerged in the fi eld<br />
of adaptronics: one in which a new functionality is enabled<br />
but with increased system complexity (distributed sensing<br />
and actuation, for example); and the other where the same<br />
functionality is enabled but with reduced system complexity<br />
(replacing old switches with simple piezoelectrics, for<br />
example). These two technical directions or approaches are<br />
inherently mutually benefi cial.<br />
The <strong>Adaptronic</strong> <strong>Congress</strong> offers a unique forum to blend<br />
these approaches by bringing together those that research<br />
innovative concepts with those that streamline conventional<br />
processes.<br />
This integration of researchers and product developers<br />
continues to forge important advancements to the fi eld of<br />
adaptronics as we have really just begun to fantasize future<br />
capabilities as well as functionalize familiar capabilities.<br />

Results from research and development in the key technology<br />
of adaptronics will be presented and discussed in detail for<br />
the 11 th time in succession at the <strong>Adaptronic</strong> <strong>Congress</strong> 2007<br />
in Göttingen.<br />
The <strong>Adaptronic</strong> <strong>Congress</strong> 2007 will once again decisively<br />
contribute to implementing the technology of adaptronics<br />
for operational use. This is the reason why I readily agreed<br />
to assume patronage of the dialog forum. I fi nd it very<br />
important to seize market development opportunities and<br />
to bring together technologies and cooperation partners<br />
from different branches. This opens up new combinations<br />
of knowledge, experience and ideas and often results in<br />
highly innovative, novel ideas and products.<br />
This particularly applies to adaptronics, an extremely<br />
interdisciplinary fi eld with relevance in nearly all industrial<br />
areas. <strong>Adaptronic</strong> technologies and their highly innovative<br />
elements are, for example, very appealing to the national<br />
and international aerospace, vehicle construction, medical<br />
technology and optics markets.<br />
The European Center of Adaptive Systems (ECAS) e.V. and<br />
the Master of Science in <strong>Adaptronic</strong>s course of studies<br />
offered by the Private Fachhochschule Göttingen in close<br />
cooperation with users, research and development fi rms is<br />
an indication of the politico-economic opportunities this<br />
key technology provides.<br />
