West Dean, near Chichester, is home
to The Edward James Foundation
which is notable for its College,
with an international reputation
for its short courses, full-time MAs
and Diplomas, and its beautifully
restored Gardens which are open
to the public throughout the year.
The Edward James Foundation is
delighted to have recently formed
a partnership with Harwoods to
support the Foundation’s ongoing
work. As an important part of the
West Sussex landscape and history,
the overview below will give you
the story of the Foundation and why
in the 21st century support such as
that from Harwoods is important to
keep the Estate, the Gardens and
most importantly the College intact
and part of our heritage.
Edward James (1907-1984) inherited
the West Dean Estate in 1912, and
when he came of age in the 1920s,
he began a life-long patronage of the
arts, investing his money and time
in supporting artists, craftspeople,
dancers and poets. To ensure that
the West Dean Estate remained
intact, Edward established the
Edward James Foundation in 1964, a
charitable educational trust, “where
creative talents can be discovered
and developed and where one can
spread culture through the teaching
of crafts and the preservation of
knowledge that might otherwise be
destroyed or forgotten”. This quest
for preserving traditional crafts and
skills and using them within the
creation of art and objects and in
the conservation of our heritage is
central to all study at West Dean.
West Dean College opened in 1971
and is housed in Edward’s former
family home, a 19th century flintfaced
mansion, in 6,400 acres
of stunning landscape within the
rolling South Downs.
Today, the West Dean Estate is
engaged in property management,
farming and forestry. Income from
Estate, Gardens and conferences
supports the Edward James
Foundation’s educational charitable
objectives. West Dean College
has become an internationally
renowned centre for conservation,
making and visual arts. The MA
and Diploma courses include
Conservation and Making of: Books
and Library Materials; Ceramics;
Clocks; Furniture; Metalwork and
Stringed Musical Instruments. And
within Visual Arts: Painting and
Drawing; Sculpture and Tapestry
and Textile Art.

CHICHESTER
FESTIVAL
THEATRE
CHICHESTER FESTIVAL THEATRE attracts
thousands of visitors every year from all over
the country and beyond. During the world
famous Summer Festival the theatre produces a
number of major productions including musicals
and dramas, both premieres and classics. A host
of extra events including pre and post- show
talks, workshops and tours also take place at
this time in and around the Theatre and its
beautiful parkland setting.
In addition the theatre offers a wealth of
drama, music, opera, comedy and children’s
theatre during October - February each year.
Many of Chichester’s critically acclaimed
productions have transferred to the West End
including the 2009 Season production of Rupert
Goold’s ENRON, and other CFT productions have
seen hugely successful international tours.
CFT also has a very strong Youth Theatre that
produces outstanding theatre by and for young
people. Each year over 70 youth theatre members
have the chance to perform and produce a
full-scale production in the Festival Theatre
under the guidance of professionals.
The 1206 seat Festival Theatre was opened
in 1962 with Laurence Olivier as Artistic
Director, and the smaller 283 seat Minerva
Theatre opened in 1989 under the
direction of Sam Mendes.

With ample space to manufacture up to 5000 cars a year, the Gaydon Factory is a quality investment for Aston Martin and the people associated with
the marque - employees and customers alike. The splendid building offers space for not only extreme attention to detail and workmanship on each
individual car, but the breathtaking entrance hall provides Aston Martin with the opportunity to display heritage vehicles alongside vehicles straight
from the factory.

What strikes a person when approaching
the Gaydon Headquarters is the refreshingly
unusual drawbridge over the moat, and the
staggeringly impressive castle-like grandeur of
the building which goes with it. Designed by
the Weedon Partnership and clad in sandstone
and glass; the outside is dramatic, majestic and
exciting.
Once over the drawbridge and inside, you enter
the atrium, a vast and naturally lit two-storey
space decorated in travertine marble. Leading
from the atrium is a double height walkway
that leads to the factory floor, the walls here are
decorated with vast Aston Martin images.

RAPIDE
In 2009, the keenly anticipated Rapide became a reality - Aston Martin’s first four-door, four-seater sporting GT coupe.
In 2006, Aston Martin presented the Rapide
Concept, a fully functional design study for
the first true four-door Aston Martin. Overseen
by Aston Martin’s Director of Design, Marek
Reichman, the Rapide Concept was a stunning
exploration of Aston Martin’s form language, an
experiment in how to encapsulate the company’s
core values in an elegant four-door sports car.
With four full-sized seats and an exceptionally
practical amount of luggage space, (accessed via
a full sized tailgate) there is more than enough
capacity for family holidays, golf trips or as a
business express for four adults.
The Rapide was shaped by the desire to create a
genuine four-door sports car with few aesthetic
compromises, bringing Aston Martin’s acclaimed
design language to a new market sector. “We
wanted to make the most beautiful four-door
sports car in the world,” Marek Reichmann stated
when the concept debuted.
The production Rapide, has remained remarkably
true to the original design concept and has
undergone extensive development to ensure it
meets the necessary requirements for production.
This has included extreme weather testing around
the world as well as dynamic performance trials
at Aston Martin’s new Nürburgring Test Centre.
Rapide will be a pure Aston Martin, with the
same high levels of performance, handling and
dynamics as a V8 Vantage, DB9 or DBS.
Aston Martin’s design language has adapted to
the four-door format with ease, with signature
features like the ‘swan wing’ doors – rising up
as they swing open – facilitating access to the
four beautifully trimmed individual seats. The
low roofline falls away at the rear to the kicked
up tail, with the strong rear haunches flowing
over the wheel arches to create a classic Aston
Martin silhouette. The iconic side strake has been
extended to run through the front doors before
blending into the rear door, lending a sense of
dynamic thrust to the car’s stance.

V12 VANTAGE
Aston Martin’s most exhilarating sports car
Based on the hugely successful V8 Vantage, the V12
Vantage features a 6.0-litre V12 engine producing 510
bhp (380 kW / 517 PS), and 570 Nm (420 lb ft) of torque
with a top speed of 190 mph (305 km/h) and 0-62 mph
(0-100 kp/h) time of 4.2 seconds.
The latest incarnation of the Vantage family has been
designed to provide a unique character, appealing to
different driver tastes and complementing the other
models in the current Aston Martin line-up.

optically widening the car, while retaining traditional
understated Aston Martin design. Equally inviting, the
cosseting interior permits the driver to extract maximum
performance ability from the car while also enjoying
customary levels of Aston Martin comfort on longer

In a world where innovation is all too often hampered by
compromise, pure performance is a rarity available only
to the genuinely discerning. Designed as the ultimate
driving experience, the Aston Martin DBS bridges the
gap between road and track – DB9 and DBR9. Equally
at home on a twisting mountain circuit as on the open
road, the DBS is a true thoroughbred.
The Aston Martin DBS is a 6.0-litre V12 powered, racebred,
two-seater shaped by the aerodynamic demands of
high performance, with an exquisite interior that marries
beautifully hand-finished materials with the very latest
in performance technology. A combination of elegant
design, innovative manufacturing processes, racederived
materials and components, and Aston Martin’s
unrivalled hand-build expertise makes the DBS a luxury
sports car without equal.
Outstanding power with supreme control: the DBS
represents the synthesis of raw power, race-bred
technology and design excellence. Powered by a handbuilt
V12 engine producing 380 kW (510 bhp/517 PS),
the DBS delivers breathtaking power and performance.
Beneath the flowing lines of the lightweight bodywork,
the DBS’s components have been honed to create an
exhilarating driving experience: taut, dynamic and
monumentally fast, but always highly controlled.

DBS Volante
The DBS was developed as the ultimate expression of
Aston Martin’s engineering and technical ability. The need
for high-performance stability, handling ability and low
kerb weight defined the car’s form and construction. The
DBS is the first production Aston Martin to make extensive
use of ultra-light carbon-fibre body panels. Its high level of
performance is delivered by the combination of inherent
light weight, near-perfect weight distribution, a supremely
powerful and flexible V12 engine, and a performancehoned
six speed transmission.
The 6.0-litre V12 engine is the heart of the DBS. The DBR9
and DBRS9 race cars are powered by an enhanced version
of this same V12, tuned to produce in excess of 600 bhp.
The shared powerplant continues the strong link between
Aston Martin’s road and race cars, just as the six-cylinder
powerplant used in the DBR1 also powered the DB4, DB5
and DB6 in the 1950s and 60s.
Introduced as an alternative to the standard six-speed
manual gearbox, DBS customers will now be afforded
the option of the ‘Touchtronic 2’ six-speed automatic
transmission. Derived from the same ZF transaxle unit
that was developed for the DB9, the system has been
substantially re-engineered to accommodate the power
and performance characteristics of the DBS.
Fusing Open Top Motoring With The Ultimate Luxury
Sports Car
Completing the DBS line-up, the new Volante will
afford customers the combination of the DBS’s alreadyestablished
benchmark sports car characteristics with all
the thrills of open-air motoring.
Featuring a motorised retractable fabric roof, the DBS’s
beautiful profile is preserved whether up or down.
When the roof is closed, it provides a warm comfortable
ambience and when open, it neatly disappears behind
the new tonneau cover at the touch of a button.
Broadening the DBS’s character, the DBS Volante will
appeal to drivers who wish to combine the excitement

His company, Ethan Gil Associates, makes only the finest

dialogue; a two-way process where we all listen to and
interpret each other’s ideas,” he says, but adds: “When it
comes to the brief, we often have to read between the lines.
In many cases, it’s about giving the client something they
didn’t know they wanted.”
Ethan’s eclectic portfolio reflects his client’s widely differing
approaches and attitudes. “Many clients come to us having
stayed in five-star hotels and seen cutting-edge furniture
designs they want to replicate in their own home. Very often
we’ll look at it and say, ‘OK, but it looks a bit corporate. We
can see what style you’re after; maybe we could reinterpret
it like this’ and come up with something that better fits their
home and requirements.”
Back for more – The fact that much of Ethan’s order book is
made up of repeat business speaks volumes. “We have a
brilliant team of craftsmen to build our furniture, but it’s the
design process that ensures what they produce meets – and,
we hope, exceeds – the client’s expectations.”
And it’s this combination of contemporary design and
traditional skills that gives Ethan Gil furniture its distinctive
quality and character. “There’s no substitute for real
craftsmanship. Our furniture is built to last: we often see
projects we worked on 10 years ago and they still look
great,” says Ethan. “I think it’s because our designs really suit
the setting for which they’re intended: just as each customer

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage is a supreme example of modern automotive design, a

Craft and technology play a crucial role. Hand-finished body panels ensure a perfect
fit, while an all-alloy underbody structure – derived from aerospace manufacturing
– incorporates bonded aluminium extrusions and castings for superb rigidity and
minimal weight. The large side panels are single, hand-finished, steel pressings,
ensuring that the side and rear three-quarter views are especially clean, with a
minimum of unsightly shut lines.
Inside, traditional craftsmanship is combined with 21st century technology. Handtrimmed
using the finest materials, the cabin places the driver at the heart of an
authentic sports car. The two-seater cabin offers generous space, not just for driver and
passenger, but for luggage too, making the V8 Vantage the perfect ally for a weekend

The V8 Vantage Roadster represents the essence of pure driving pleasure, it is a compact sports car that offers an
astonishing blend of performance and exhilaration, a vehicle with two distinct personalities: Open and invigorating, or
closed, cosseting and protective.
The key to any great sports car is the engine. This new V8 has been specifically designed and developed for the Vantage
Roadster and Vantage Coupé. Hand assembled at Aston Martin’s purpose-built engine facility in Cologne, Germany, it is a
light, compact, all-alloy unit – high performance yet ultra-responsive even at the lower end of the rev range. Its maximum
torque is an impressive 410 Nm (302 lb ft) @ 5000 rpm, 75 per cent of which is delivered at just 1500 rpm – barely more
than idle – making the Roadster extremely tractable and great fun to drive. Push harder, and that V8 engine revs freely,

The Vantage Roadster is a unique and singular design statement that has been styled and engineered to excel from every

motor sport in 2005 with an exciting new
programme focused on the DBR9 - a stunning
GT based entirely on the road
going sister vehicle - the DB9.

The DBR9 was unveiled at Aston Martin’s
state-of-the-art facility at Gaydon, near
Warwick on 4th November 2004 finished
in the same evocative shade of Aston Martin
Racing Green as the Works cars of the
1950’s.
Though billed as a ‘test and development
year’, the DBR9 made an instant impact,
taking class honours on its debut at 12 Hours
of Sebring in March 2005 and then winning
the famous Tourist Trophy - today a round of
the FIA GT Championship - at Silverstone.
Aston Martin’s eagerly-anticipated return to
Le Mans followed and with it came further
podium success - the DBR9 shared by David
Brabham, Stephane Sarrazin and Darren
Turner posting a top ten overall result on the
vehicle’s maiden appearance at the Sarthe
circuit and finishing third in its GT1 category.
Already the DBR9 is taking up where the DB3S
and DBR1 left off by combining outstanding
performance with the beauty and integrity of
a true, thoroughbred Aston Martin.

The DBRS9 race car was unveiled at Le Mans
2005, and provides a competition vehicle
for club and national racing series, and a
bridge for teams and drivers looking towards
international GT racing.
The DBRS9 is based on the DB9 road car,
but shares many design features from the
full GT1 specification DBR9. It uses the
road car’s aluminium bonded chassis with a
DBR9-based roll cage. Aston Martin Racing’s
engineers have tuned the standard six litre V12
engine to produce approximately 550bhp
(an increase of 20%) and reduced the overall
weight by 480kg, to increase the power to
weight ratio to nearly 430 bhp/tonne.
In June of 2007, for the first time since
1959, Aston Martin triumphed at Le Mans.
The winning Aston Martin Racing with
InterContinental Hotels & Resorts DBR9
– numbered 009 – was driven to GT1 class
victory and a remarkable fifth overall by
David Brabham, Rickard Rydell and Darren
Turner after 24 hours of non-stop competition,
characterised by changeable conditions and
several safety vehicle periods.

TEST CENTRE – NÜRBURGRING
The new Aston Martin test centre located
adjacent to the famous Nürburgring circuit is
a testament to the marque’s racing prowess
and commitment to tireless development of
new and existing product. The DBS, DB9, V8
Vantage and forthcoming V12 Vantage and
Rapide are the most rigorously tested Aston
Martins in the brand’s history. A key part of
the sign-off process for all new models is a
10,000km Nürburgring durability test.
The Nürburgring, once christened “the Green
Hell” by Jackie Stewart is often referred to as
the “toughest test track of all” due to its 73
corners, unforgiving cambers, variance in
road surface and notoriously fickle weather.
It is the perfect place to push test vehicles to
the very limit and the ultimate benchmark for
sports car manufacturers.
With Aston Martin engineers now testing cars
at the Nürburgring for 16 weeks every year,
it made perfect sense when an opportunity
arose to purchase a building in Meuspath
located opposite the Döttinger Höhe main
straight in February 2008 to create Aston
Martin’s first purpose-built test facility. As
an example of Aston Martin’s agility; with
commitment from the new shareholders, the
purchase was completed in just five weeks
after board approval. Building work started
one week later on the 17th February 2008
to convert the building. The conversion was
completed on the 10th May – just 12 weeks
later.
The existing structure was modified to create
a modern fresh technical feel using advanced
fabrics to cover the building. Inside, the
fixtures and fittings were brought right up to
date conforming to the latest Aston Martin
Corporate Identity. The whole conversion
was conducted re-using as many original
materials as possible to reduce waste. The
grand-opening took place on the 20th May
on the eve of the 36th Nürburgring 24 Hour
Race.

ASTON MARTIN & JAMES BOND
James Bond 007 is synonomous with power, style, excellence and an unmistakable British
sophistication. It is no surprise therefore that this British institution continually chooses to
put this infamous character behind the wheel of an Aston Martin.
The films have a special fondness for the DB5, it is renowned for being the first and most
famous James Bond car; appearing, in an unforgettable debut as the gadget ridden flagship
car in Goldfinger with Sean Connery in 1964. Followed, the following year in Thunderball
with the same DB5 again being driven by Sean Connery as 007.
During the 1970s and early 1980s there was a break in the Aston Martin/James Bond
relationship, but this was renewed for the 1987 film, The Living Daylights which allowed
007 to sample the Newport Pagnell V8.
Then in 1995 the DB5 blasted back on our screens with Pierce Brosnan as our hero in
Goldeneye. Each Bond car which was used had more and more impressive gadgets and
upgrades from the one before. Tomorrow Never Dies was the next Bond feature to use
another DB5, and then very briefly in 1999’s The World Is Not Enough.
That brings us round to the stunning gadget free DBS in 2006’s Casino Royale which
we see Bond actually win from his enemy in a game of cards. The crash scene in the
film won the car a place in the Guinness Book of World Records by barrel-rolling seven
times on screen. This film was actually the prequel to all the other Bond films and so this
displays to the audience how Bond was introduced to, and began his relationship with
Aston Martins.
The gorgeous DBS returned two years later for Quantum of Solace in 2008, again starring
Daniel Craig as 007.

ANNUAL AUCTION
In the early summer of each year, Bonhams hold an Aston Martin and related
automobilia auction at the Aston Marin Works Service facility in Newport Pagnell.
In the 2009 sale, buyers from around the world – Singapore, Australia, the USA,
Europe and the Middle East - were all bidding at the 10th Anniversary auction of
distinguished motor cars on Saturday May 9, with the result being just short of
£3m.
A delighted James Knight, International MD for Collectors Cars at Bonhams who
took the sale said afterwards: “This is our fourth sale this year, all of which produced
stunning results. The reason is simple, we have sellers who want to turn cars into
cash and buyers who want to turn cash into cars.” He added: “Vendors acknowledge
the market is buoyant and have realistic expectations, enabling us to present cars at
fair market levels that attract the kind of demand we have seen here today.”
Top selling car on the day was lot 340, a 1965 Aston Martin DB5 4.2 litre saloon
which was estimated to sell for £150,000 to £180,000 but made £249,000. This
car was one that Bonhams sold previously at its inaugural Aston Martin Works sale
back in 2000 when it achieved a fair £60,000. It was then given to Work Service’s
Heritage team for a comprehensive restoration to their exacting standards. On
Saturday it proved to be the centre of attention and, after a prolonged bidding battle,
sold for £249,000.
Perhaps the most surprising result was the ‘barn find’ 1963 Aston Martin DB5 Series
V saloon that sold for a massive £85,000 – against an estimate of £20,000 – 30,000.
Six absentee and seven telephone bidders competed against a bidder in the room
to secure the car.
James Knight says: After a decade of Aston Martin sales at Newport Pagnell, the event
has established itself on the classic car auction calendar. It provides an unequalled
setting for all who love fine engineering and beautiful cars. The Aston Martin magic
just continues to grow.”
