Now This is How You Celebrate
Independence Day!
by Bella Caggiano
While many people travel over
the 4th of July, Norwood residents
know the best independence celebration
is right here at home!
Barbeques and family gatherings
are scheduled to work
around the many festivities
planned throughout Norwood so
that not a moment will be missed.
The events are launched with a
children's character and bicycle
line up in early afternoon and
finishes with the most spectacular
parade in the area!
While the day's grand experience
begins late afternoon,
families begin their communal
celebration at 1 p.m., with the
charming Children's Bicycle,
Tricycle, Doll Carriage and Historic
Character Parade. Children
and their imaginations are the
center attraction for this procession
as Norwood's younger set
flaunt their creativity through
Norwood Center with festively
decorated bikes, carriages and
costumes. The event begins at
the First Congregational Church
at Walpole and Winter Sts., and
continues down Washington St.,
through Norwood Center, to the
Town Common where awards
and refreshments are served.
At 3 p.m., pack up barbeque
leftovers for an old fashioned
picnic on the Town Common to
soak in the soothing chimes of a
carillon concert. Norwood's carillon
is a local gem as one of only
The Recreation
Department is in
Good Hands!
By Donna Lane
There’s a new kid in town!
Only he’s not a kid. And, he’s really
not new, but his job is new to
him. Meet Travis Farley, the new
Superintendent of Recreation.
The day Farley was interviewed
for this article, he was
literally running from meeting to
meeting … addressing a problem,
meeting with town management,
and readying Hawes pool for the
summer season, among other
things.
He is immediately likeable. He
walks and talks briskly but when
he was asked to slow down, he
laughed easily and said “take your
time”. It’s obvious he’s heard the
words “slow down” before.
Travis Farley builds rapport
easily. Not too many young execs
turn off their phones and give
you their undivided attention.
But that’s exactly what he did. He
receives very high marks from this
reporter for that one action alone!
Prior to moving up to the
superintendent’s spot, Farley
worked as the Program Director
for the Recreation Department,
starting in June of 2016. That is
not a long time, but one senses
that this very personable young
man is a quick study. It is easy
to see why his predecessor hired
him.
When asked what plans he
had for the department:
“Well, I’ve only been on the
job for a week and a half, but I
have some ideas," Farley said.
"First and foremost, I plan to build
off of what Jerry [Miller] did. I’ve
got some pretty big shoes to fill.
He was here for 24 years and he
did a great job setting things up
for the department. The fields are
in great shape; the only thing left
to address is the turf field at the
Coakley. And I have a good staff.”
So how does he hope to not
only fill those shoes but make his
own mark? One of his first projects
will be to improve the Civic
Center.
“It really needs an upgrade,”
Farley said.
While that is necessary, more
interesting is his vision of introducing
Therapeutic Recreation
(TR) to Norwood.
What is that? According to the
American Therapeutic Recreation
Association, TR is a systematic
process that uses recreation
and other activity-based interventions
to address the assessed needs
of individuals with illnesses or
disabling conditions as a means to
psychological and physical health,
recovery and well-being.
Recreational therapists work
with clients to restore motor, social
and cognitive functioning,
build confidence, develop coping
skills and integrate skills learned
in treatment settings into community
settings. Methods of accomplishing
this include creative arts
(e.g., crafts, music, dance, drama),
sports, adventure programming,
dance/movement and leisure education.
In addition, previously as program
director, Farley was in a
position to identify some areas he
believes would benefit the Norwood
community. One of these
is an after-school enrichment program.
He would like to partner
with the PTA to offer more programs
to school kids.
“If the kids can’t come here
after school, let’s bring the programs
to them,” Farley said.
He would also like to add tot
classes and will be trying some
new programs in the fall. His energy
is palpable.
In addition to trying new
things, Farley will have the dayto-day
responsibilities for budging,
payroll, staffing and evaluations,
capital improvements and special
events, such as Norwood Day
and the “Extravaganza” held the
weekend after Thanksgiving.
Farley is enthusiastic about his
new job and what is possible in his
field. HIs decision to chose recreation
as his life's work came very
close to home.
“My dad inspired me," Farley
said. "He was the recreation director
for the town of Brewster while
I was growing up. I used to help
him with lining the baseball field,
I umpired when there was a game,
and generally did whatever else
was needed. A bit of everything.”
Farley attended Plymouth
State University and received a
degree in Interdisciplinary Studies.
He also received a Masters
in Sports Management from
Springfield College. He worked
in college athletics for 10 years at
Fitchburg State College and Boston
University, supporting varsity
sports, travel and facility needs.
Subsequently, he was the Assistant
Superintendent of Recreation in
Marblehead for 3 years handling
recreational programming.
Farley said one of the reasons
he came to Norwood was that he
wanted to make a difference in
creative athletic programming.
“This is a very supportive town
for recreation,” Farley said
A typical day you ask?
“No one day is the same," Farley
explained. "That’s what I enjoy
the most. It’s a fun job. You are out
and about doing different things.
Meeting different people. It’s really
a lot of fun.”
Farley is married with one child
with another on the way this fall.
Please join us in welcoming this
energetic young man and supporting
him in his mission to “make
Senior Firefighter Retires
From Department
by Renee Plant
The Norwood Fire Department has said farewell
to Senior Firefighter Phil Morrison, who recently retired
after 34 years of service to the town.
Born and raised in Norwood, Morrison has been
a popular figure both in the community and among
his peers in the department, according to Fire
Chief Anthony Greeley.
“He is a very funny, kind and genuine
guy,” Chief Greeley said. “He’s a
family man. To add, he has been a
personal friend of mine for more than
30 years.”
A lifelong Norwood resident, Morrison
raised his own family in the town,
where he was very involved in community
sports. In particular, Morrison enjoyed youth football
and hockey.
“He has done a lot in the community,” Chief
Greeley said. “He was a youth hockey coach, and
was also involved in the booster club.”
Morrison’s youthful spirit also carried over to the
department. Though very serious about his work,
Greeley said Morrison kept the mood very light at
the station. His talents, ChiefGreeley explained, exceeded
beyond putting out fires.
“He was actually our resident artist - a caricature
guy,” Chief Greeley said. “If one of the guys did
something funny, silly or made a harmless error, he
would chronicle it through that venue. It was actually
a sign of honor and respect if you became a subject.”
However, when needed, he could always be
counted on to get down to business. Chief Greeley
said Morrison was always a “go-to guy” due to
his ability to remain composed during difficult
situations.
“He was one of our top engineers
and best drivers,” Chief Greeley said.
“The fire apparatuses are very heavy
and difficult to drive, but he never missed
a beat.”
His work ethic and friendly personality are
what made him a valuable asset to the department,
and though he will be missed, Chief Greeley
said the department wishes nothing but the best for
Morrison during this next chapter of life.
“It is bittersweet, but he has done his time,” Chief
Greeley said. “It’s time for him to move on, but I will
miss him. The department will miss him.”
In retirement, Morrison joins his brother, former
Norwood firefighter William Morrison, who also
spent more than 30 years on the department.
“We’ll do everything we can to
ensure you have the best experience
possible, from the moment
you walk in the door,” Dr. Bliss
stated. “This means knowledgeable
dentists, a friendly and welcoming
staff, and a promise that
we’ll always do right by you.”
Located at 66 Winter St., with
ample parking behind the office
and on Bond St., Winter Street
Family Dental serves children of
all ages and adults throughout
Norwood and the surrounding
areas. Bliss has a loyal staff of
three, including Helena Brigham,
a dental assistant who worked
under the beloved Thomas K.
Hawley, DMD, prior to his passing
in 2015.
“It’s a real pleasure to have
Dr. Bliss take over this practice,”
Brigham remarked. “She always
has a smile and treats each patient
with great respect and sensitivity
to their needs. I love working with
her.”
What does your smile say?
Bliss recommends a cleaning
and exam at least every six
months, along with annual x-rays.
Her practice offers digital radiographs
and intra-oral cameras, a
useful tool in explaining a patient’s
issue by viewing the tooth onscreen
and discussing dental goals
and treatment plans together.
Beyond quality dental care,
Bliss and her team offer cosmetic
and restorative dentistry. Most insurances
are accepted and financial
options are readily available.
Dr. Bliss' love of dental health
started in high school working
as a clinical assistant for a dentist
in her childhood hometown
of Needham. She realized then,
while developing x-rays, sterilizing
equipment and restocking supplies,
that she loved being part of
the practice.
“That experience inspired me,”
Dr. Bliss added. “Watching the
pediatric dentist work her magic
Geneva, NY, with a B.S. in Biochemistry
in 2003. After taking
a year to gain experience working
as an orthodontist assistant
in a private practice in Medford,
Bliss received innovative training
and education at Tufts University
School of Dental Medicine, graduating
in 2008.
After working three years as an
associate dentist at a large, multispecialty
practice, Bliss was promoted
to the directorship. Then
she started her journey to purchase
her own practice.
“I’m delighted to take on this
practice in Norwood,” Dr. Bliss
added. “The transition has been
pretty smooth, and I am grateful
the patients have remained loyal to
Dr. Hawley’s practice.”
Beyond providing a welcoming
atmosphere and quality care,
Bliss is committed to developing a
It May Be the Flu,
but It May Be Lyme Disease
Lyme Disease often goes undiagnosed
as the symptoms often
mimic the flu. When symptoms
last several weeks, those signs
should be followed up with a
blood test. Lyme Disease is typically
treated with doxycycline.
This antibiotic, however, is not always
effective, especially with the
many co-infections of Lyme, such
as Borellia, Bartonella, Babesia,
Rickettsia and Rocky Mountain
Spotted Fever.
According to the Center for
Disease Control (CDC), an estimated
300,000 Americans are
diagnosed with Lyme Disease
each year, and the numbers are
rising. Although it is believed that
Lyme is a result of a tick bite, the
infectious bacteria can be spread
by other biting or blood-sucking
insects, including mosquitoes, spiders,
fleas and mites.
Common effects of tick bites
include an itchy “bull's-eye,” but
this rash only occurs in about half
of those infected. Other symptoms
include unrelenting fatigue, recurring
fever, headaches/migraines
and achy muscles and joints.
For six years Pauline suffered
with various ailments, including
muscle aches, joint pains, brain
fog, extreme fatigue and unrelenting
headaches. Her primary care
Dr. Rochelle Bien & Dr. Michael Goldstein
physician diagnosed Lyme Disease,
prescribed doxycycline, and
notified her several weeks later she
was successfully treated for Lyme.
An appointment with a Rheumatologist
for her “arthritic” condition
resulted in a prescription for
antidepressants, a side effect of
dealing with the pain. Pauline felt
her life was slowly slipping away.
A referral to the Holistic Center
at Bristol Square set her on a new
path. At the center Pauline was
diagnosed with Bartonella, a coinfection
of Lyme, and was treated
homeopathically for the strain as
well as for her other related health
issues. Within three months, Pauline's
life started to return. Today,
she is virtually symptom free and
enjoying her life free of pain and
fatigue.
If you suffer from Lyme Disease,
don’t delay, call the Holistic
Center at Bristol Square today
(508) 660-2722 and schedule an
appointment with Dr. Bien or Dr.
NATURE CALLS
Squirrels – What are they good for?
By Amy Beaumont
I’ve asked myself the question
many times – squirrels, what are
they good for? This nature lover
has been hard pressed for many
years to come up with an answer
to that question. Squirrels – they
hoard our birdseed; ruin our
birdhouses (among other things)
and engage in general mayhem.
Everyone has a squirrel story. I
distinctly remember my neighbor
Jayne returning home only to
find a squirrel sitting on her counter
eating hotdog rolls that were
left on the counter. The squirrels
hanging around my yard target
the suet I put out for my woodpeckers,
and are relentless in their
pursuit. I chain the suet basket
shut, but occasionally they’re still
able to get to in and drag the cake
off to wherever.
One has to outsmart the squirrel,
but their patience is unending
in getting food. Nuts and berries
aside, the gray squirrel has
caused some problems globally,
but mainly in threatening other
species of squirrel, such as the
Palumbo
LIQUORS
red squirrel. While native to the
United States, the gray squirrel
was introduced into Vancouver
Island in Canada in 1966. It has
since spread widely, and is considered
rather invasive and a threat to
both the local ecosystem and the
native red squirrel.
Factually speaking, there are
no distinguishing marks between
the male and females; their size
is generally 9 – 11 inches. As far
as a unique quality of the squirrel,
they are one of the few mammalian
species that can descend a
tree headfirst; they are able to do
this by turning their feet so that the
claws of the hind feet point backwards
and can grip bark. As for
Are You Ready
reproduction, squirrels generally
have between one and four young,
but can have as many as eight.
The life expectancy at birth is only
1 – 2 years, due to the challenges
of a squirrels’ habitat. Squirrels
will generally have only one litter
per year or season, but more experienced
females may have two
litters.
All facts aside, once this nature
freak dug a bit deeper, a very important
task carried out by squirrels
was uncovered. As often is the
case, a native species has a distinct
purpose. For the gray squirrel,
they are ecologically essential in
regenerating our forests. The scientific
world has long since known
this and studies going back to the
60s prove it. The studies show that
seed dispersion by squirrels and
the subsequent forest regeneration
to be highly effective. Since squirrels
bury over 95% of their seeds
and never retrieve about 30%, the
results are future forest regeneration.
A very, very important factor,
considering there’s not an excess
of tree planting going on.
Another impressive factor uncovered
by scientists is the quality
of the seeds buried by squirrels. It
would seem squirrels eat damaged
seeds first – those which are infested
or rotting, which would not
have had good germination rates
anyway, and then they move on
to eat the good seeds. This practice
of burying healthy seeds only
adds to the germination success
rates, thus ensuring a more robust
regeneration rate of our forests.
Squirrels also eat larvae and the
insects that attack seeds – thus
preventing the negative effect of
seed damage.
DREAMING OF A TRIP?
Not sure where to go?
Specialty Items for Any Occasion
The Norwood VFW Auxiliary Post 2452 recently invited a group
of local youths to an award ceremony which was held at the VFW
after the Auxiliary's monthly meeting. The Auxiliary was proud to
recognize some of our youths who have taken part in the 2017 Young
American Creative Patriotic Art Contest.
Congratulations to Isabelle Antonitis and to Ryan Garczynski!
Ryan went on to the District level of the competition. The Young
American Creative Patriotic Art Contest is held yearly and is open
to all High School students. The first place winner from each state
competes for national awards totaling $21,000.00
We would also like to thank our young volunteers who truly exemplify
patriotism and their commitment to volunteering to help serve
our veterans is unwavering. The following youths are part of the
Scout volunteers: Jack Silletti, Chris Foley, Olivia Liburdi and Allison
Silletti (not pictured). More of our youth volunteers are: Matthew
O'Connell, Eric Hamlin and Ryan O'Connell (not pictured).
Adults pictured with the children are VFW Auxiliary Youth
Committee Chairwoman, Lisa Silletti, VFW Jr. Vice Commander
James Shannon and VFW Auxiliary President Rebecca Shannon.
All of these facts combined
make the squirrel the true king of
forest regeneration. It also turns
out that squirrels are highly effective
in recognizing damaged seeds
from healthy ones. In fact, squirrels
surprised scientists when they
more effectively detected damaged
seeds from healthy ones in over
45% of the studies carried out.
The results were that squirrels are
more effective at detecting damaged
seeds than those of scientists
equipped with laboratory instruments.
Further supporting the importance
of squirrels are those of
environmentalists ((Crook 2004,
Hanrahan and Belair 2015); it
was noted a significant increase in
young trees in the areas in which
gray squirrels live.
So, there you have it – that’s
what squirrels are good for. And
for all of you out there who grin
every time you drive by a flattened
squirrel on the road, just remember
– a dead squirrel really represents
the loss of another priceless
gardener. A loss we can’t afford
really.
Keys to Health: Summer is Here! Help Your
Pet Stay Comfortable
Summer is a beautiful time, with flowers blooming, and
hot weather. It can also bring some health issues, but no
worries! Here are some tips to help manage them.
• Allergies - Is your pet is biting at the base of her tail,
scratching a lot, or have irritated skin? If so, she may
have an allergy. Fleas and pollen are the most common
causes. For information and tips regarding fleas,
see our April 2017 article: localtownpages.com/papers/norwood.
If pollen is the culprit, the best way to
minimize her exposure to it is by keeping her indoors.
Also, change the filters in your air conditioners, wash
your pet’s bed and other surfaces she hangs out on, and
dust and vacuum. If needed, speak with your vet about
medications to reduce allergic reactions.
• Hairballs - In hot weather, cats naturally shed their fur.
This means more tongue baths, which means more
hairballs. Give her a hand by brushing her regularly.
Hairball remedies could also be a good idea. See your
vet for suggestions.
Ask Tabby
My name is Tabby, and
I’ve generously decided to take
time out of my busy day once a
month to answer YOUR questions.
Feel free to send them to
info@baystateanimals.org
Here's this month's question:
Dear Tabby,
My human tries to help me avoid furballs by brushing
me, but I hate it! What suggestions can I give her so that
it’s a good experience for both of us?
Fluffy Longhair
Dear Fluffy,
I hear you! Being brushed can feel pretty strange at
first. Following are some tips for your human:
• Choose a time when things are quiet and you’re relaxed,
not when you’re playing or when there’s lots
going on at home.
• Have her brush you very gently at first, and brush
places on your body where you like getting patted, for
example your chin or your neck. If even gentle brushing
feels too weird to you, have her use a dry cloth or
towel, and get used to that first.
• Remind her to reward you with a treat after brushing
is finished, no matter how short the time was. This
helps you associate something positive with the experience.
I hope that helps you and your human. Hairballs are
the worst!
Norwood Boys Lacrosse Enter Tournament
with Only 3 Seniors
by Christopher Tremblay
It’s been three years since the
Norwood boys lacrosse team
last ventured into the Division 2
South State Tournament where
they made it all the way to the
Semi Finals losing to Hingham.
After going 6-4 in Division 2 or 3
contests, the Mustangs will once
advance into the tournament due
to the Sullivan Rule.
The last time Norwood played
in a tournament game was when
this year’s seniors were first year
freshman and with only three
seniors gracing this year’s squad,
and only one with playing time
that year, the number of athletes
with tournament experience is
minimal.
Senior captain and Mustang
defender Nick Girard is the only
Norwood athlete on the team
that has previously played in a
state tournament game. This
year, Girard was the Mustangs
defensive MVP that does whatever
is needed of him for his
team to succeed.
“Nick is not a rah, rah type
of guy – he leads by example,”
Norwood Boys Lacrosse Coach
Anthony Roman said. “The team
feeds off his energy; he’s a tireless
worker that doesn’t like getting
off the field and his teammates
notice that. Come tournament
time, he’ll ramp it up even more
and show the team that they’re
going to have to work harder to
succeed.”
In addition to Girard, Norwood’s
only other seniors are
co-captain Tom Driscoll and
Seamus Kelley. Driscoll, a defensive
player for the Mustangs,
brought his game to the next level
this spring while Kelley is a role
player for the team.
While it has been the seniors
who have led Norwood throughout
the season, three underclassmen
(freshmen defender Teddy
Willett, attacker Lars Boothroyd
and sophomore attacker Jake
Smelster) have really brought
their game to the field this season.
Boothroyd is a smart lacrosse
player that is always in the right
place at the right time and his
transition from defense to offense
is smooth while Smelster led the
team in goals and assists and
just about every other offensive
category. Willett, according to
Roman, is a physical specimen.
“Teddy brings a physicality to
our defense that we haven’t had
in some time here at Norwood,”
the Mustang Coach said. “While
he did have a great year, he did
hit a wall near the end of the season
being only a freshman who
was not used to the length of the
season.”
Junior James Piatelli, who has
platooned as the team’s goalie the
past few seasons, was handed the
keys to the car this year. During
his first full season in net, Piatelli
took his game to the next level.
“He’s going to be a big part of
our team if we’re going to succeed,"
Roman said. "We need
him to play the way he has all
year. He’s not a goalie
who is going to wow
you with his play,
but he will make
those quality saves
when you need
him to, he’s very
consistent.”
Having only one
athlete with tournament
experience could eventually
be the Mustang’s tournament
downfall, but the coach is very
optimistic about the future.
“I’m very excited about playing
in the tournament again,”
Roman said. “But I’m even more
excited about the future and
moving forward with this team.
Playing in the tournament will
give the younger players the experience
they’ll need.”
Roman and the Mustangs
wll hook up with Bishop
Feehan in the first round of the
tournament. According to Coach
Roman, in order to move past
Feehan the team is going
to need to play physical
and muck it up,
making the pace of
the game slower.
If they get into a
wide open game,
they’ll have no
chance of moving
forward. Unfortunately,
the
Mustangs fell to
Feehan 20-4 to
wrap up their season.
School Committee Votes in Favor for Tri Valley League Move
by Christopher Tremblay
The Norwood School Committee
has given Mustang Athletic
Director Jon Longley the go
ahead for a possible move to the
Tri-Valley League (TVL) and
leave the Bay State Conference
(BSC). The transfer, however, is
only in its first step of the process.
Norwood will now submit an application
and wait Norwood’s application
and await an invitation to
the Mustangs athletic program. If
accepted, Norwood would be allowed
to enter the league early as
the 2018-19 school year.
The Norwood AD firmly believes
that the TVL class size is
much closer than it is in the BSC.
Longley held an open forum to
discuss the options of why Norwood
should make the jump earlier
in the month and on June 21,
the school committee discussed
the movement to the TVL. Following
a lengthy discussion, the
School Committee voted 3-2 in
favor of allowing Longley to apply
for instatement into the league.
Michele Eysie Mullen and Patrick
McDonough voted against the
motion.
With Norwood’s rival Dedham
making the jump from the
Bay State Conference (BSC) to
the Tri Valley League (TVL) next
year, Mustang Athletic Director
Jon Longley decided to look into
a move for his teams as well that
would make more sense for the
high school and its athletes.
“Back in 1990, Norwood was
the largest school in the Herget
Division of the Bay State Conference,”
Longley pointed out. “With
Dedham leaving we would now be
the smallest (in school attendance)
in the entire league.”
In 2106, Dedham was listed
as the smallest school in regards
to enrollment with 718 students,
Norwood was right being them
with 967. The average high school
in the BSC currently has 1509 students
that’s with Dedham, Norwood
and Milton (985) included;
remove Norwood and Dedham
and the average enrollment jumps
to 1715 students. While over in the
Tri Valley League, where Dedham
has already been accepted, the average
enrollment is a mere 766,
much in line with where Longley
believes his athletes belong.
Playing against such larger
schools the Mustangs are continuously
finding themselves battling
far superior teams in terms of
numbers. During the 2013-14,
15 and 16 school years Norwood
averaged 360 athletes playing fall
sports while posting a 76-237-
11 record. The Mustangs winter
sports teams had the lowest participation
with 240 athletes putting
up a record of 94-177-11 and
the spring sports averaged 315
athletes, but were able to put up
the best record among the three
seasons going 117-188.
Firecracker 5k Sparks Their
Own Celebration!
by Bella Caggiano
Norwood's 4th of July celebrations truly has a
day filled with events for everyone. Between the
kids' bicycle and character parade and the big finale,
the 4th of July Parade, runners of all ages take
to Norwood's streets to run in the Firecracker 5k!
It's a runner's version of their own 4th of July
parade, but instead of floats and bands, these
participants are part of the show! Just before the
launch of Norwood's infamous 4th of July Parade,
runners take on the celebrations and with the
Norwood Firecracker 5k Road Race. Prior to the
parade at 5 p.m., their start signal goes off from
the Town Common and runners of all ages, from
Norwood and surrounding towns, join in on the
With Dedham already departing
and Norwood possibly following
suit, the Bay State Conference
is actively pursuing schools to join
the league beginning the 2017-18
school year.
3.1 mile course that winds throughout Norwood's
scenic neighborhoods.
Prizes are awarded for the top three runners
within gender and age categories and t-shirts are
given to the first 100 registered runners.
For more information or to register, contact race
coordinator Jim Henry at 617-610-0084, visit www.
racewire.com. Entry fee is $20 with pre-registration
or $25 the day of the race.
Unlike many other local races, Norwood streets
are filled with thousands of spectators to cheer and
encourage runners throughout the entire challenging
course. Directly following the race, Norwood's
infamous 4th of July Parade begins! What better
way to celebrate America's independence?
Norwood Sports
Siobhan Reen Covers All The Bases
by Christopher Tremblay
Having rotated through
every possible position, some regrettably,
on the softball field since
she got involved with the sport,
Norwood’s Siobhan Reen finally
found one that she not only enjoyed
but was good at.
“Previously I had played
just about every position, especially
a lot in centerfield, which
was not my favorite,” Reen said.
“Eventually, I found one that I really
enjoyed. Playing second base
there’s much more action than in
centerfield and it keeps your head
in the game.”
Since joining the high
school team as a freshman, Reen
has been the starting second baseman
for Coach Carol Savino.
However, this spring the Mustangs
found that they had a lot of vacancies
throughout the field and Reen
gave up her home for the past
three seasons and moved over to
play shortstop.
“We graduated a lot of
seniors from last year’s team and
had some holes to fill if we wanted
to be successful this year,” Reen
said. “Coach moved me over to
short, I’d prefer second, but it’s not
that huge of a difference.”
As the team’s shortstop,
Reen has to now field a lot more
balls hit her way than when she
was playing second in addition
to learning the position and the
angles – something she picked up
with relative ease.
“I can’t say enough about
her, she’s absolutely wonderful and
a true second baseman,” Coach
Savino said. “She’s a great leader
and captain and works hard with
the younger girls to improve their
game.”
Reen’s softball career
actually began playing for the
Norwood little league before she
hooked up with Savino’s club
team, the Mass Drifters. In the
high school lineup, her coach had
her leading off due to her speed,
but this season she got pushed
down into the three hole for the
Mustangs, once again due to the
newcomers on the squad.
“She’s a very fast girl and
speed is something that you cannot
teach,” Savino said. “I call her
Happy Feet. As a freshman, her
feet were always going before her
brain told her what to do.”
The senior captain,
who was also a member of the
high school gymnastics team and
played soccer, likes using her speed
in the base paths. While unsure of
her stats, Reen believes she has 37
career stolen bases.
“I’ve always been fast,
but Coach Savino had me focus
that speed for softball,” Reen said.
“Stealing is my thing. Up until this
year I use to be the leadoff hitter
because of my speed and ability to
steal a base when we needed it.”
Although she didn’t bat
at the top of the order this season,
the senior infielder had a very
productive year. Reen improved
her batting average for the fourth
straight year hitting .631 at the
plate with 21 RBIs, 5 homeruns,
and added a .921 fielding percentage
in the field.
Coming into her final
high school season Reen and her
teammates were just hoping to do
well enough to get another shot in
the Division 1 South Tournament.
“As a captain in my final
year, I just wanted to keep everyone
in a positive mood and keep
moving in the right direction,”
Reen said. “We didn’t expect to
go 14-4 with all the holes that we
needed to fill.”
Norwood grabbed a 10
seed in the tournament and went
on to defeat Stoughton and Walpole
before getting knocked out by
Milford. With her high school softball
career now complete, Reen is
looking to possibly walk onto the
University of Rhode Island team;
something her coach believes is a
strong possibility.
“Siobhan didn’t reach
out to the URI coach right away,”
the Mustang Coach said. “I told
her I would call the school and
let them know about her skills,
but she should walk on and try to
Although she truly enjoys
playing softball and knows that she
could help the team, Reen was not
originally sure that playing softball
in college was a good thing.
“I am going to school for
physical therapy and didn’t know
if playing college softball would
conflict with my school work,”
Reen said. “However, as this season
came closer to ending I was
already finding myself missing it. I
am going to keep playing all summer
and be ready for college and
hope that I can make the team as
a walk on.”
There should be no
doubt that once the URI coaching
staff sees the abilities she possesses
that Reen will be a shoe in to
be part of the Rams team somewhere.
Norfolk County Exceeded Expectations in May
Despite a monthly trend of limited
inventory, total real estate sales in May,
2017, both residential and commercial,
showed a solid 10% increase year over
year.
“Surprisingly, Norfolk County real
estate sales for May totaled 1,706, compared
to 1,554 in May 2016," Register
of Deeds William P. O'Donnell said.
"What was unsurprising is the low
number of properties on the market,
which has given rise to competition,
particularly for first-time homeowners
bidding against each other, resulting in
healthy increases in both the average
sale price and total sales.
“The average sales price for May,
again for both residential and commercial,
was $766,499, a 14% increase
compared to the previous year. Total
real estate sales volume increased a
whopping 25% for the month coming
in at $850 million. In light of the continuing
low levels of real estate inventory,
it will be interesting to see if this
growth can be sustained.”
Lending activity for the month
was a different story. A total of 2,426
mortgages were recorded during May,
a 14% decrease from the previous
year. Total mortgage financing for the
month was $1.1 billion, a 3% reduction
year over year.
“An uptick in mortgage rates triggered
these downward numbers,
O'Donnell said. "With the Federal Reserve
projected to increase rates during
the second half of 2017, I see the
mortgage lending activity trend lines
continuing for the foreseeable future.”
A bright spot for the month of May,
2017 was Norfolk County homeowners
continuing to take advantage of
the Homestead Act. A total of 1,153
Homesteads were filed during May,
2017, a 4% increase compared to the
previous May.
“The Homestead Act is an important
consumer tool," O'Donnell said.
"A Homestead provides limited protection
against the forced sale of a homeowner’s
primary residence to satisfy
unsecured debt up to $500,000.”
An additional piece of good news
was seen in the area of foreclosure activity.
The total number of Notice to
Foreclose Mortgage recordings, the
first step in the foreclosure process was
60, a 28% reduction from the previous
year. Foreclosure deed recordings, the
final step in the foreclosure process,
were flat. A total of 22 foreclosure
deeds were processed in May, the same
number recorded in May, 2016.
“As I have said many times, one
foreclosure filing is one too many,"
O'Donnell said. "With that said, I am
heartened by the reduced foreclosure
activity seen in Norfolk County. The
Registry continues to partner with
Quincy Community Action Programs.
These two non-profits are there to help
anyone who has received a Notice to
Foreclose Mortgage from a lender. Another
option is to call the Massachusetts
Attorney General’s HomeCorps
program, (617) 573-5333.”
“Considering where we are in Norfolk
County with low real estate inventory,
I was pleasantly surprised by the
upsurge of May’s real estate sales numbers,"
O'Donnell said. "However, an
important factor we need not overlook
is the continued desire of individuals
and families to live and work in Norfolk
County. The strong quality of life and
sound economy in eastern Massachusetts
should be able to sustain the local
real estate market through the rest of
2017.”
The real estate market has remained strong in
Norwood, however, the town may be starting to see
a slight shift in the market, a trend that has been anticipated
for some time in the Boston area. Comparing
May, 2017 to May, 2016, Norwood experienced a
slight 3% dip in its average sale price of single family
homes, from $455,163 to $441,492. The number of
listings sold continued to display the town's lack of
residential inventory down by almost 50% with only
12 homes sold compared to 23 in the same time period
last year. With fewer choices, it is no surprise the
action to purchase was quick and decisive and homes
did not remain on the market long. The average days
to an offer decreased from 30 to 18 in May, 2017,
and days on the market showed a whopping 53% decrease
from 60 to 28.
For condominiums, the news is mixed. The average
sale price rose from $289,725 to $325,063 (up
11%), however, these figures could be influenced by
four new construction units sold at Norwood's Endicott
Woods community, with an average sale price of
$422,125. The number of listings sold remained, flat
at 8 from year to year, but buyers took their time to
decide on their purchase and subsequently close the
deal with 49 days to receive an offer, up from 28 in
May, 2016 and remain on the market for 61 days in
2017, up from 43.
