HISTORY
Over 33 years ago, Peggy and Mike O’Dea opened their home to help young women who faced a crisis pregnancy. Through these
encounters, it was apparent that God was preparing them for something greater—to save lives from the tragedy of abortion. This
foundation would become Mother and Unborn Baby Care.
Mike organized a group of parishioners from St. Michael’s Church in Southfield, now Church of the Transfiguration, to help establish a
local crisis pregnancy center that followed the guidelines of Robert Pearson, President of the Pearson Institute. This model was chosen
because of ability to attract the greatest number of abortion-determined women in crisis pregnancy situations. Mother and Unborn
Baby Care was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit and its Problem Pregnancy Center opened its doors on July 1, 1984.
1n 2002 we purchased our first ultrasound system. Since then, we’ve performed more than 4,000 ultrasound scans. In 2104, the
Knights of Columbus donated our current, state-of-the-art, high-definition system capable of showing a mother vivid images of her
child in the womb; this technology plays a key role in saving babies.
Michelle Schmidt, now Yax, joined Mother and Unborn Baby Care in 2006 and played a significant role in enhancing our Christ-centered
peer counseling. Tragedy struck early-2016 when executive director Peter Riccardo died unexpectedly of a heart attack. Later that year a
new team was installed and with them came fresh ideas to improve operations.
Today, technology continues to drive our strategies. Smartphones have precipitated a google-and-gone mentality. Our advertising must
place us high on a search results page, it must be accurate, and cannot mislead. Our telephone counselors must encourage frightened
women by responding quickly, precisely, truthfully, empathetically, and convincingly so that scan appointments are scheduled and kept.
There are several abortion clinics within a few miles of our Center—each stands ready to take a young woman’s money and God’s
precious gift of LIFE.
Since that day in 1984, the Problem Pregnancy Center has served thousands of women encouraging them to respect and embrace life.
Each day at the Center lives are changed by letting the love of Christ flow through our dedicated counselors, who are committed to
defending LIFE of the mother and the unborn child—we love both of them. Our motto is “Love moms so much that we love their babies
to life.” With your help and through the grace of Almighty God, we remain dedicated to continue our vital mission—protecting mothers
and precious, unborn children from the tragedy of abortion. Please keep us in your prayers.
