Centred on the design strategy of Sense, Map, Analyse,
Formulate, Design Studio 6 developed design strategies based
upon measurable information and data sets.
Project Abstract
Small particulates within the air have a dramatic impact on
our health as they penetrate deep into our lungs, affecting
both short and long-term health. The residents of South Korea
have been plagued with health problems incurred by poor air
quality.
Songdo is aimed at the young professional family and the
Pneumatic Sanctuary provides the young population with a
community care facility and childcare centre to help educate
and protect them from this burden. Utilising the power of
wind, the Pneumatic Sanctuary harvests and treats the
particle matter laden air. This is then distributed to the catalyst
building, external pockets and into a proposed underground
piped infrastructure. It is acknowledged that “exposure to
air pollutants is largely beyond the control of individuals”
(World Health Organisation). Installing the proposed clean
air infrastructure would supply all inhabitants with this vital
ingredient to a healthy life.
