ABOUT ME

PROFILE
I am a self-motivated individual with a passion for thoughtful
architectural design. I have the initiative and determination to
accomplish tasks to a high level of detail, with the ability to
communicate my ideas clearly to colleagues and clients. I work
well as part of a team and use my initiative when assuming
tasks as an individual.
During my four years of post part 1 professional experience,
I have undertaken a number of projects in the private sector,
predominantly bespoke residential projects. I am particularly
passionate about this sector but I am keen to develop my professional
experience within the public sector.
Favouring honesty within structures, being true to their materials
and construction, has lead me to be aware of and think
critically about the reality of the architecture of the built environment.
My passion for design lies in a desire to convey functionality,
efficiency and beauty.

Design Studio 6
Centred on the design strategy of Sense, Map, Analyse,
Formulate, Design Studio 6 developed design strategies based
upon measurable information and data sets.
Project Abstract
Small particulates within the air have a dramatic impact on
our health as they penetrate deep into our lungs, affecting
both short and long-term health. The residents of South Korea
have been plagued with health problems incurred by poor air
quality.
Songdo is aimed at the young professional family and the
Pneumatic Sanctuary provides the young population with a
community care facility and childcare centre to help educate
and protect them from this burden. Utilising the power of
wind, the Pneumatic Sanctuary harvests and treats the
particle matter laden air. This is then distributed to the catalyst
building, external pockets and into a proposed underground
piped infrastructure. It is acknowledged that “exposure to
air pollutants is largely beyond the control of individuals”
(World Health Organisation). Installing the proposed clean
air infrastructure would supply all inhabitants with this vital
ingredient to a healthy life.
Sustainable Building, Performance & Design
Sustainable Building, Performance & Design (SBPD) is 1 of 6 specialisation topics that each
first year MArchD student selects from to concentrate their first year studies on.
SBPD acts as a vehicle to allow you to explore human, social, economic and environmental
sustainability. Changing our approach to architecture is vital if we are to reduce our
dependency on non-renewable source of energy and reduce our ecological footprint.
Project Abstract
Located on the cities northern boundary, Oxford’s ‘Northern Gateway’ is an existing
development that plans to introduce a new science hub and affordable housing to the city.
The aim of our project was to access the proposed scheme‘s approach to sustainable living
and come up with a proposal that would enhance the site beyond this.
After conducting a research paper investigating the carbon dioxide reduction possible by
onsite generation of heat and electricity using a decentralised energy system, the possibility
of reducing emissions further through onsite growth of biomass became intriguing. The lead
onto my design project becoming research based around the topics of energy production,
carbon dioxide reduction and biomass.
The scheme developed into a research facility for alternative algae based fuels that focused on
producing pyrolysis oil, the ‘Innovation Research Hub’. The building also acts as a pedestrian
gateway from the western edge of the site, whilst also performing as an educational facility
about sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. The process of cultivating algae offsets the
carbon dioxide produced due to heating and powering the properties within the entire site.
Overall, the Innovative Research Hub aimed to replace oil with a low carbon alternative to
produce products that would other wise use fossil fuels for the formation.

Homage to Hockney
Bridlington is a small coastal town located in the East Riding
of Yorkshire. Bridlington’s harbour is its prominent feature,
the town’s activity concentrate here, where you are able to
observe the fisherman in the water below.
This project assessed the need for regeneration within
seaside towns after the demise of their tourist industry and
it was deemed that the development of an art school and
gallery would provide for both tourists and the population
that inhabits the local area.
It was important to me to mould the building and the harbours
edge to form an outdoor area to enjoy the atmosphere of the
working sea front. I therefore broke the harbour wall and
formed steps down to create a way to get close and level with
the action, forming a unique viewpoint that would attract
pedestrians to walk around and under the gallery.
The ground floor of this scheme has the entrance to the gallery
as well as exhibition spaces for artists of all ability, aiding the
promotion of both the artist and the gallery itself.

PART I
Sep 2007 - Jun 2010
Vinification
A winery was to be designed and set within the beautiful
Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire, owned by the National
Trust. Incorporating the running of this new venture with the
existing activities at the park was key.
The proposed pathway through the winery site allows for the
high vantage point, initiating the introduction to the building
and processes. The main path diverts the public through the
centre of the building over the top of the barrel room with the
aim of encouraging interaction between the visitors and the
wine making process.
The process of wine making is a very linear one and each
section of the wine making process needs specific conditions.
This is all reflected in the functionality of the building and
it’s linear from. The vinification process can be viewed from
various vantage points from the multiple levels throughout.
For example, the vines you can see from above, underneath
and from within.

CHARLIE LUXTON DESIGN
Mar 2015 - Sep 2016
Part I & II Architectural Assistant
Hook Norton, Oxfordshire
Charlie Luxton Design, a small office based in the North
Oxfordshire Country side, was formed 2005. There are
currently 5 members of staff employed by the firm.
With twelve years experience in designing environmental
buildings, Charlie Luxton Design specialise in sustainability
and designs that respond to local materials, traditions and
climate. The projects within the office are primarily bespoke
residential within Oxfordshire.

Broadstone
Private Residential
Charlbury - Oxfordshire
Broadstone is a long-running project to
modernise a rambling farmstead into a large
family home and guest wing.
Joining CLD when this project was already on
site, I design joinery for on site construction
and co-ordinated the kitchen design. I later
aided in producing the planning sets for Phase
3, which is currently under construction.

Garlands Farm
Private Residential
West Challow - Oxfordshire
Garlands Farm is a Grade II listed farmhouse of special
architectural and historical interest. The farmhouse was
refurbished and new sympathetic structures were constructed
on the footprint of the original farmyard to add further
accommodation to the family home. The client also intends
to run a social enterprise organisation from an existing barn.
I aided in producing the planning and working drawings sets,
including joinery detailing for the bathrooms, bedrooms and
staircases.

Lamorna
Private Residential
Charlbury - Oxfordshire
The remodelling of an existing 1960’s
bungalow into family home, being insulated
internally and over clad externally.
I produced 3D models to develop the scheme,
leading onto me producing the planning set
of drawings. As of spring 2017, the scheme
has gained planning permission and is due to
start on site.

August House
Private Residential
Burford - Oxfordshire
The refurbishment and extending of a
farmhouse into a ‘home for life’, this project
was designed to use minimal energy whilst
being sympathetic to its setting.
I was involved with producing the planning
set and the beginning of the construction
drawings. The project began onsite in October
2016.

Ambury Barn
Private Residential
Barnard Gate - Oxfordshire
The client for Ambury Barn was relocating to Oxfordshire
to be nearer her family. The proposed barn was in a good
condition with all it’s original beams and trusses and the work
would be done under permitted development. Once the barn
is converted there will be four generations of the family living
at the farm.
I was involved from first client meeting with this project,
developing the project and producing all planning drawings.
I later contributed towards producing the construction
drawings.
As of September 2016, the scheme was going through a cost
reduction process, but was due to start onsite in early summer
2017.

TYACK ARCHITECTS
May 2011 - Aug 2014
Part I Architectural Assistant
Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire
Tyack Architects is based in Moreton-in-Marsh in the North
Cotswolds. It was established in 1974 and employes 20-25
people.
Their private sector work largely consists of mature or historic
dwellings with clients wishing to restore or extend their
homes. They also work on new dwellings within the private
sector.
There are a number of large Care Centre schemes which
Tyack are the leading architects on, creating well equipped
developments providing assisted living accommodation for
the elderly.

Maxwell’s Piece
Private Residential
Lower Lemington - Gloucestershire
Maxwell’s Piece & Pond Cottage were a pair of semi detached
houses in the hamlet of Lower Lemington. Tyack Architects
assisted in developing the pair of houses to create a single
family dwelling of an appropriate size to the generous plot.
The design was carefully considered in order to add interest
through the use of contrasting, traditional materials and
improved architectural features without detrimentally
effecting the character of the original structure.
T Y A C K A R C H I T E C T S
Involvement
Selection of projects undertaken during placement since May 2010
Maxwell’s Piece was entering stage C/D when I began at
Tyack Architects. I prepared the drawings for the pre-app
and the full planning application. I assisted with the building
regs drawings underneath a technician, going onto observe
tendering.
Maxwell’s began on site in mid-2012 and I was on site every
4-6 weeks, observing the project progressing through the
stages.

Residential Development
Chipping Norton - Oxfordshire
This housing development is on a greenfield site on the
outskirts of the Cotswold town of Chipping Norton. With the
site being situated on a main arterial route into the town,
there was an intention to improve this gateway into Chipping
Norton. The project is of low density with 50% affordable
housing upon the site.
Involvement
Entering the practice in early 2013, I was involved since stage
A, attending all meetings with the clients and contractors,
on and off site. Working alongside a senior Architect, I have
developed the site plan and all the units, making sure they
abide by all regulations.
Several versions of the scheme went in for planning, however
it was not granted planning due predominantly to its sensitive
location.
(Hand drawn elevation by senior Architect)

Care Villages - Assisted Living Units
Health Care
Varying Locations
Whilst I was working at Tyack Architects there were eight
nationwide Care Village schemes being worked on within the
office, all at varying stages. Two developments had started on
site, with another just gaining planning.
The main components that make up a Care Centres are the
Village Core and Assisted Living Units (ALUs).
Involvement
I predominantly worked within stages C/D on the majority
of Health Care projects which enter the practice. The initial
designs and the external elevations are developed by a senior
architect and handed over as design intent drawings. I then
took each Assisted Living Unit from concept drawings, to
planning and then onto building regs drawings, making sure
they abide by regulations and that all services worked.

Care Villages - Village Centre
Health Care
Varying Locations
The layout of the Village Cores became my responsibility once
I had gained the knowledge needed through observation of
previous projects.
I developed the individual units that make up the Village
Centre, producing the planning and building regs drawings.
After receiving the design intent drawings I developed the
drawings ensuring the buildings worked efficiently. Joining
my pre-formed units, I adjusted the layout and services to
improve the functionality.
COMMUNITY
INVOLVEMENT

PARISH COUNCILLOR
May 2015 - Present
Vice Chairman
Cherington & Stourton Joint Parish Council
Cherington & Stourton are villages situated in the south
of Warwickshire, with a population of approximately 400
residents. As part of the dwindling younger generation in the
village community, I wished to make a positive contribution
and bring issues regarding affordable housing to the attention
of council and community.
Having been elected as a parish councillor, working in the role
of Vice Chairman since May 2016, I represent & support our
rural community in meeting their needs and aspirations. We
have bi-monthly meeting to discuss matters arising, and we
frequently have planning meeting between.
