NZ EXTREME SAILING TEAM
SPONSORSHIP PROPOSAL

THE NZ EXTREME SAILING TEAM REPRESENTS THE VERY BEST
OF THE NEW GENERATION OF SAILORS FROM NEW ZEALAND.
THE TEAM WAS LAUNCHED IN 2017 AND ARE IN THEIR FIRST
YEAR OF COMPETING IN THE PINNACLE OF FLEET RACING,
THE EXTREME SAILING SERIES.
Mike Mahoney is the team catalyst and financial backer
behind NZ Extreme Sailing Team. A very experienced and
successful businessman, he has turned his passion of
sailing into this exciting new venture.
The team is assembled by some of the best up and
coming kiwi sailors. Graeme Sutherland and Chris Steele
are the co-skippers and lead this talented and highly
motived group of individuals. Behind the team, Mike has
gathered some of the world’s most respected and
experienced sailors, sailing coach Rod Davis and sailing
director Tony Rae.
The NZ Extreme Sailing Team’s professional infrastructure
along with an ambitious multi-faceted project will offer
commercial partners a wide range of benefits through
partnership or sponsorship. Like many others, the sailing
world will be following this team’s competitive progress
and development over the coming years.

THE SAILING TEAM
ROD DAVIS TONY RAE CHRIS STEELE GRAEME SUTHERLAND
SAILING COACH SAILING DIRECTOR CO-SKIPPER CO-SKIPPER
Rod Davis is a two-time Olympic medalist
and former long-term coach of Emirates
Team New Zealand. An adopted kiwi, Rod
is globally regarded as one of the most
experienced match racing legends of all
time. Rod is the head sailing coach for the
NZ Extreme Sailing Team and his core
focus is in expediting the team’s success
in the Extreme Sailing Series over the
next three years.
Tony Rae has over 25 years of professional
sailing to his name. One of the most
accomplished yachtsmen in the race, he
has competed in numerous America’s
Cups and has won this race on two
previous occasions. Tony brings a wealth
of winning experience and is crucial to
the professional growth of the team.
Chris Steele has made a name for himself
on the sailing circuit with his aggressive
and accurate sailing skill set. Chris is no
stranger to the Extreme Sailing Series
having been involved with other teams -
now on his native Kiwi team, he is looking
to stamp his mark on the competition.
As the co-skipper of NZ Extreme Sailing
Team the young Kiwi will bring his
passion and skills to the helm.
Graeme Sutherland is the co-skipper and
the sailing team manager of NZ Extreme
Sailing Team. A professional sailor based
out of the Royal NZ Yacht Squadron, he
is well respected on the water and off
as the coach of the performance programme.
Graeme brings a wealth of
professionalism, tactical knowledge
and direct attitude to the team’s success
on and off the water.

THE SAILING TEAM
All sailing positions on-board the NZ Extreme are hand-picked by the co-skippers Chris Steele and Graeme Sutherland for
each regatta. Sailing out of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, the breeding ground for the next generation of
world-class sailors, each position is filled based on the unique skill sets required to compete with the best in the world.
1
2
HELMSMAN
The sailor at the helm calls the shots. They have to be ready to make a split-second decision
as they steer the boat around tight stadium racecourses at speeds of up to 39 knots.
MAINSAIL TRIMMER/TACTICIAN
The mainsail trimmer who often doubles as the tactic, works closely with the helmsman and
the headsail trimmer to fine-tune the sail and to maximise performance. As tactician they are
the right-hand man to the helmsman and responsible for finding the best position and strategy
around the racecourse.
3
HEADSAIL TRIMMER
In control of setting the headsail, the jib and the code zero, the headsail trimmer works alongside
the mainsail trimmer to achieve the optimum sail set up.
4
FOIL TRIMMER
The J-foil, which enables the boat to fly, has two planes of movement, forward/backwards and
up/down. The foil trimmer uses a pulley system to adjust the foils to get the boat out of the
water. The foil trimmer works closely with the floater in this task.
5
FLOATER/BOWMAN
A super-agile and strong member of the crew, the floater/bowman fills the gaps between the
other roles to ensure the entire operation runs smoothly and no job is left undone.

GC32 HYDRO-FOILING CATAMARAN
The key success of the Extreme Sailing Series is the one-design
boats, fair competition, innovated technology, international teams
and iconic venues.
The boats sailed are the hydro-foiling GC32 catamaran, this ultra-light,
responsive hydro-foiling catamaran lies in its unique J-foils
which work much like an airplane wing to lift the hulls out of the
water, reducing drag and rapidly increasing speed.
10
The GC32 is capable of reaching speeds of up to 39 knots. If you
want an idea of what that feels like, it is like putting your head out
of the window in a car when it is raining at 83kph.
Mainsail:
The powerhouse of the
bat is it’s 3Di mainsail,
which has an area of
60m2.
Mast:
The rotating wing mast
allows the mast and
mainsail to form an optimum
aerofoil shape and
has a height of 16.5m
above deck.
Code Zero:
The large foresail is used
for upwind sailing and
has an area of 23.50
metres.
Boom:
The horizontal pole
along the bottom of the
main sail pulls the sail in
and out to control the
speed.
Hulls:
10m long, the hulls can
lift up to two metres
above the water when
folding, making for a wild
and exciting ride for the
crew.

Jib:
The 3Di foresail is unfurled
to give the boat
extra power upwind and
downwind and has an
area of 90m2
J-Foils:
Instead of a daggerboard,
the GC32 has
two J-foils which creates
lift.
Rudders:
The rudders are fitted
with T-foils to aid control
whilst foiling.
Trampoline:
Light-weight mesh ‘deck’
made from super strong
artificial fibre, that allows
the crew to move easily
from side-to-side.
Bowsprit:
A spar to which the
forestay and code zero
is fastened, it is 6.6m in
length.

COMPETING AGAINST THE WORLD’S BEST
2017 TEAMS
Former Series champions Alinghi are co-skippered
by team principal Ernesto Bertarelli,
who established the professional racing
team in 2000, and Arnaud Psarofaghis. Twotime
winners of the America’s Cup, Alinghi’s
top-quality crew are strong contenders
in this year’s fleet as they hunt for a fourth
championship title, having taken victory at
the end of last year’s season.s
Land Rover BAR Academy develops some
of the UK’s hottest sailing talent throughout
the season, mentored by senior members of
Sir Ben Ainslie’s America’s Cup team. At the
end of Land Rover BAR Academy’s debut
season in 2016, Scottish skipper Neil Hunter
was promoted to the Land Rover BAR senior
America’s Cup team. Taking his place as skipper
this season is Rob Bunce, who hails from
a short-handed offshore sailing background.
Progressing from fourth in 2015 to
a podium 2nd place in 2016,This
season the team will look to retain
that top spot to the very end, with
World Match Racing Champion
Phil Robertson at the helm.
Match racing experts and co-skippers, Jes
Gram-Hansen and Rasmus Køstner front the
only Danish flagged team in the circuit, SAP
Extreme Sailing Team. Backed by world-leading
software and software-services provider
SAP, who is also the Series’ official Technical
Partner, the team competes in its sixth
season in 2017. Having secured 4th place
in 2016, the team chases its podium finish
this year.
After securing its third season podium in the
Extreme Sailing Series last year, 2017 will
see Red Bull Sailing Team return to compete
in the adrenaline-fuelled Stadium Racing circuit,
spearheaded by Austrian superstars Roman
Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher.

ATTRACTING SOME OF THE WORLD’S TOP SAILORS, INCLUDING AMERICA’S CUP WINNERS,
OLYMPIANS, WORLD CHAMPIONS AND PROFESSIONALS, RACING THE HYDRO-FOILING
GC32 CATAMARANS ON SHORT COURSES IS RACING NEVER SEEN BEFORE.
THE START:
THE COURSE:
DURING THE RACING:
FINISH:
The start is one of the most
exciting parts of any sailing
race, and with such short
races, each lasting around
10-15 minutes, a good start
is a vital part of winning
tactics. Each race is started
with a four-minute countdown.
If any boat jumps the
line before the start gun,
they will receive a substantial
penalty!
Depending on the number
of boats and wind conditions,
Race Management
may decide to run racing
over different shaped
courses around a number
of large, inflatable coloured
buoys. Races can vary from
full fleet and group racing to
match racing, and can take
place in the ‘stadium’ or out
in the open water.
Teams use all of their tactical
prowess to out-maneuver
each other, particularly
during mark roundings, and
can call a protest on the water
if they think another boat
has infringed the rules.
Umpires are on the water
and, like football referees,
they can give out penalties,
which are normally a penalty
turn (a costly manoeuvre).
If the umpire thinks no foul
has been committed they
blow a whistle and raise a
green and white flag. If there
is a really bad foul the umpires
can show a black flag
resulting in instant disqualification.
First past the post wins – it’s
as simple as that. The winner
of each race will get 12
points, second place is 11,
and so on. The last race of
each Act counts for double
points, putting the pressure
on for a great finale!

greater than initial investment.
Enhancing image and shaping consumer
attitudes; improve how your company
is viewed by becoming affiliated with
world’s fastest growing sport.
Professional foiling sailing is becoming
the most exciting spectator sport in the
world and reaches a consumer market
