It was with great sadness that the world of antiquarian books, and booksellers worldwide greeted the passing of one of its largest and warmest characters, Fred Hanna, who died on the 2nd June, 2011, after a short illness. Fred has left behind a void and a legacy if that is not too paradoxical a statement. Many people will remember his presence on the floor in Nassau St, hovering, directing and greeting, begging for a question or a challenge to test his stock knowledge or agility to scale the heights of those formidable bookshelves. They will not have known the man, the passion for books and bookselling, his love of THE business and tradition, his sense of place and purpose. He was the leader, the constant and a little bit of the oracle also. He oversaw the arrival and departure of many a bookseller or ‘chain’ within the precinct of Nassau St - some with trepidation and others with absolute glee. He forever sought quality bookselling along with the honesty and transparency in the selling and supply. He was instrumental in setting the standard in customer care for others to emulate and throughout his long life with books and the business of bookselling, (either new or antiquarian), ensured that others recognised that standard and incorporated it into their business or general lives. He was a once-off character and a gentleman. Forever formidable, nobody could ever say he did not have presence wherever he went. For many a long year he sat on the board of the Irish Branch of the Booksellers Association of the United Kingdom and Ireland. He loved to travel to conferences, at home or abroad, but mostly to the UK. However, he travelled a little further on one occasion and I remember sitting with him and his wonderful wife, Val in Quai d’Orsay, Paris, at a European Booksellers Conference dinner in a packed hall with over 800 people, everyone chatting together but feeling that Fred Hanna (1934 - 2011) something was missing. There was lots of noise, eating and talking but there were no formal introductions, no thanksgiving before the meal, no master of ceremonies to guide us along for the evening. Having tasted a range of wine offerings, Fred was very concerned that the occasion could go without acknowledging our thanks - that of the Irish contingent at least! Up he stands, spoon is tapped loudly on glass silencing the masses, and he proceeded to give bountiful thanks to our hosts for their generosity and for the magnificence of the occasion. Fred gets a standing ovation. Fred knew it was the right thing to do and he did it. This exemplified his life. Fred was the proud recipient of the inaugural O’Brien Press ‘Irish Bookseller of the Year’ award and before he left Nassau St was awarded an Honorary Life Membership of the Booksellers Association of United Kingdom and Ireland. Fred was a passionate man, full of energy, fun, mischievousness and obviously humour. He loved his job; he loved the book itself in all its shapes, sizes, bindings and frailties, his sailing, the sun, the little gin and tonic, but mostly his wife and his family. They were centrepiece in his life. He leaves a wonderful legacy of stories, of love and happiness and a life worth so much living! I was proud to be his friend. He taught me more than I can imagine. Anyone that gets a piece of this collection should remember the man responsible, who lovingly chased the highways and byways and toiled happily in the world and provenance of books.
