April - 21 students selected The selection
process results in 21 enthusiastic and motivated students
from The Netherlands and the overseas regions. They go to
Maastricht, Swaziland, Canada, Armenia, China,
Germany, Italy, India, Norway, USA, Costa Rica, Bosnia Herzegovina
and VK. 30 UWC volunteers in the Focus Group
Selection, one of which a psychologist, put a lot of time
and energy into the selection process and its improvement.
Selection operates entirely separate from the scholarship
programme. This way we can ensure that all suitable
candidates have the opportunity of a UWC experience.
May – Taking social media to a higher
lever Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are increasingly
used to reach alumni, students, prospective students and
the rest of the world. There are regular posts from the UWC
International Office as well as UWC in The Netherlands and
the colleges.
May – IB exams and graduation After
weeks of cramming (some more than others) IB second years
worldwide take their final exams, followed by graduation ceremonies
and emotional goodbyes. Waterford Kamhlaba UWC
students in Swaziland take the southern hemisphere exams
in November. Our Dutch students move to the next phase in
their development, be it an Ivy League school or a gap year to
put their UWC experience into practice. At UWC Maastricht
the graduation of 139 students was celebrated in the attendance
of 950 guests.
June - Scholarship Award Ceremony
The Scholarship Award Ceremony is an important occasion
to present the newly selected students from The Netherlands
and the Caribbean parts of our Kingdom. Guests participate in
interactive workshops about social entrepreneurship and the
UWC xperience and listen to keynote speaker Pratibha Singh,
who emphasises the importance of the strong community
UWC proves to be.
July - UWC Davis Challenge, mission
accomplished The donors of UWC the Netherlands
contributed to a considerable extent to UWC Maastricht’s
fundraising efforts to meet the UWC Davis Challenge. By
giving generously we were able to raise USD 1 million, which
is doubled by Shelby Davis. Thanks to the extra USD 1 million,
UWC Maastricht will be able to give a large number of national
committee selected international students the opportunity
of two fantastic years at UWC Maastricht. Worldwide the
challenge has raised over USD 10.9 million in matched funding
across 15 UWC schools and colleges. This represents an overall
percentage growth in supporters of 32%.
June – Annual meeting Dutch alumni At
the 2016 Annual Meeting the national committee presents its
annual report. It is also a good moment to ask alumni for input
and ideas about a new student recruitment programme.
