Joris van Poppel UWC Atlantic College 1992-1994 NOS TV reporter “My two years at a UWC have had a tremendous impact on me. UWC gave me the urge to discover the world, to meet new people, to learn and to tell the story of others. The skills I developed at UWC are still valuable for my career and everyday life. In Brussels I meet new people of various international backgrounds every day. As a journalist the understanding and respect for people in different contexts, enables me to hear and tell their story in a balanced way. UWC taught me about taking responsibility, independence and self-reliance – core values I use every day in my work as reporter and in daily life. Away from home at the age of 16 I learned to stand on my own two feet. This independence as well as the wide range of extracurricular activities that UWC offers contributed a lot to what I am today. From cliff rescue to sports, the arts and making friends with people from all over the world, the experience was priceless. The friends I have made during this period are still the foundation of my international network today. When covering the refugee crisis in summer 2015, it was of great help to meet my Hungarian roommate in Budapest to cover the story. And guess who inspired the travel reports on Japan I did? My other roommate, of course. My international perspective and drive to cover stories abroad, definitely started at AC. After graduating from Atlantic College, I studied political science and International Relations at the University of Amsterdam and the Universidad de Salamanca in Spain. I travelled a lot, visiting old friends from AC and meeting new people all over Europe. After a post-doc course in journalism, I moved to Brussels as a freelance journalist writing for a Dutch daily newspaper about EU-politics and Belgian news. From 2009, I started to work as a correspondent for NOS Dutch public radio & television, reporting on a wide variety of issues, ranging from EU-news, to political, economic and cultural events in Belgium. I also covered the terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels and the refugee crisis in Germany and Central Europe. I currently work for NOS as a TV reporter based in The Netherlands. Being in journalism, improving the world is often pinpointing its problems. That’s key to solving them. That’s why reporting on terror attacks, conflicts, refugees and economic and political problems is so important. International understanding starts with insight and knowledge about the world. The time I’ve spend enclosed within the safe ancient walls of UWC Atlantic College, provided me with the windows to the world and the ability to critically analyse, discover, embrace and change it.“ 7
