You may not have an idea what it
takes to toil in the gospel field. But
we do!
This is what it’s all about: You.
You are special in the eyes of God, you are
actually the apple of His eye!
You are why we’ve made this magazine.
You are the reason nearly every week, FoC
is out doing something: fellowshipping
with high school students, ministering in
churches, visiting childrens’ homes and
hospitals... And you are the reason why
FoC will be out on mission in November
Thank you for standing by us. We love
The Fountain, FoC Monthly
From
the chairperson
Claudia Gisemba
Chairperson, Fountains of Christ
Dear Brethren,
Have you taken time to be with the Lord?
Whenever I think upon this question, I am reminded of the words
of David in Psalm 116:1-2 where he declares that he will call upon
the Lord as long as he lives for the Lord has heard his voice and
supplications. Can each one of us say the same?
FoC is about Christ. It’s about going the mile for Him and with
Him, letting Hin live in us.
We should review the course of our past life and recall with gratitude
the precious deliverances God has wrought for us. God has
given support in trial. He has opened of ways when all seemed
dark and forbidding and renewed our strength when we were
about to give up. He has encircled us with heavenly angels to
guide each step we make and each breath we take. In view the
innumerable blessings He continually gives, we should ask ourselves,
“What shall we render unto Him for all He has done?”
Psalm 116:12
It would be well to spend a thoughtful hour each day in contemplation
of the life of Christ. We should take it point by point and let
the imagination capture every scene, especially the closing ones.
On behalf of FoC, we appreciate your taking time to support the
ministry and it’s upcoming missions by buying this magazine. Being
a growing ministry with a huge work to do that requires a lot
of resources, we cannot take for granted your support in giving
and in prayer.
But greater still is our pleasure to spend some time at the Lord’s
feet with you today!
Testimony
It was during the first term
break of 2013 that I decided
that enough was enough. For a
while now, I had undergone a long
period of soul searching, seeking,
looking for something… Something
new, fresh, different.
A Sheep
Once Lost
by Keith Tong’i,
Form 2M
“Why go to church so monotonous,
dull, while outside there’s a
world with unlimited pleasures?” I
thought. I mulled over this question
for quite long, very long indeed
I thought I would go insane.
Life was always easy until I chose to apply
to foreign universities. The grueling process
often left me despaired. I could not see where
I was going. I was down in a valley in the dead
of the night. Then, I
6 The Fountain | August 2013
I had begun attending the SDA
services once, twice, thrice a week.
But barely a month later, the services
had become a no-go zone
for me as I was fully immersed
in it all: the computer laboratory,
entertainment, reading worldly
magazines, mails, et cetera. But
all that while, deep down I knew I
had left the church: I had left God!
For three months now, I have
been a stranded sheep, lost from
the fold of Christ, Many at times,
my fellow schoolmates from the
SDA society have urged me to attend
church.
“Yes, of course, I’ll be there today,
why not?” I’ve been answering
them with that line, which has
become my tag-line.
Then a few days ago I begun
thinking, “What value does eloping
church add to me? How does
chose to take a journey.
I went on my knees
and conversed with
my Lord; telling Him all
my troubles. He heard
my cry and renewed
my strength and hope.
He said, “Child, fix your
eyes on Me.” I expediently
followed His
instructions and made
Him my Guiding Light.
Ever since, my cup overflows.
I was successfully admitted to Cornell
University in the United States and now I
know that when things seem hard, there God
has no end in view but to perfect His people.
Christ, who passed on in pain and
anguish upon the Calvary tree
feel about it?”
The shepherd has found his lost
sheep. In the SDA society, I receive
an inner piece, joy, a sense
of fulfillment, an inner feeling of
accomplishment. This is where I
belong; this is where I am meant
to be. Yes, this is home!
Coming home, coming home,
Never more to roam,
Open wide thine arms of love,
Lord I’m coming home.
My dears, many of us are undergoing
this similar problem. We all
experience our downtimes. My
advice is: don’t lose faith so soon.
A man never realizes how close
he is to achieving something until
he quits.
Let’s enjoy the experience in the
fold of God.
It was Saturday, the 31st of March, 2007,
at 10.30 pm when my mum got a call from
the hospital informing her that my dad had
passed on. Moving on has been hard for all
of us. I could not see
our family’s future
without dad. For a
long time I wished he
was around, regretting
having spent that day
in church instead of
visiting him in hospital.
However, I am grateful
to God because we
have neither lacked
nor begged. He has
been faithful enough
to answer us every time
according
to his will
by
Phanice
Ododa
we have believed and prayed. As I hope to
join the University, I thank God for the twelve
wonderful years I shared with my dad and
I am very grateful for my heavenly Father’s
unfailing and eternal love for me.
Praise Him...
IN VERSE
HE LEADETH ME
by Jeff Nyauka,
Form 3, Alliance High School
That hymn keeps running through my mind
I like what it says, but it just isn’t so, Lord
You would lead me, if I’d let you
And we would go far that way.
But I keep tugging loose, like an impatient
child
Running ahead, sure that I know the way,
Perhaps half afraid You wouldn’t let me if I
waited,
Always running ahead: into brick walls.
That hymn ought to have another stanza,
Lord
“He followeth me”
When I go tearing off on my own, You follow
me
Patiently, lovingly, like a parent
Are you shaking your head, Lord?
Wondering when I will ever learn
How not to run into brick walls?
You lead me, when I am willing, Lord
But the wondrous part is you follow me,
You find me, dust me off,
Comfort me, lift me up,
And take my hand.
To all audiences I write
Warning of spiritual principalities we fight
But He, guiding us, our light:
We need not dread the night
Devouring is the devils will
But He wants us to stand still
For we are a city set on a hill
And the battle we’ll win
SUCCESS
By LOICE MOKAYA,
Form 2W, Alliance Girls High School
The world defines success
by how much money you
make, how big your house
is, how nice your car is and
what type of job you have.
God however does not care
much about these things. When
He looks down to this planet,
what he notices is not the shiny
cars, big houses and hundred dollar
bills. No, the creation that catch His
eyes are His children on earth. He delights in
the cleanness of the heart, the fragrance of a
life well lived and purity of a Christ like personality.
He values us so much and works day and night
for our salvation.
Who Will Read
My Eulogy?
Every now and then I wonder
what those who will be present
when I meet my day will
say concerning my decedent self.
If I were to know anyone who will
be present at that funeral, I would
tell them that it should not be
long. If someone accepts to stand
on that day to read my eulogy, I
would wish that they not talk long.
I would like somebody to mention
that day, that Rosana JR,
did try to feed the hungry and
drop some coins into the beggars’
dishes by the roadside and
street corners. I would like it to be
said that I visited those in prison,
offered warmly a mug of cold
water to a sojourner heavy with
the fatigue of travel, clothed those
who were naked, prayed with the
sick and stayed up late with the
bereaved. I want someone to say
that I cracked jokes with my pals
and shares insights and fun moments
with my friends, that I occasionally
billed out cash strapped
colleagues, that I illuminated my
family and brightened my career,
and that I spoke an inspiring word
to souls in despair and shared in
the delight of rejoicing hearts.
I would like somebody not to forget
to mention that day, that I did
try to reach those I could with the
message of the everlasting gospel.
I want it said that in deed I tried
to love and serve.
In the process I have cogitatively
imagined and solemnly ruminated
as to whose story I would like
mine to be commonest to. I have
desired a genuinely ennobling
prodigy, full of qualities that excite
admiration, yet devoid of the pungent
spices and irritant twists of
mortal flesh. In this I have sought
by Joe R Rosana
after a life that is rich in simplicity,
simple in propriety of manners and
conduct, and conducted in coherent
veracity. No superstardom…
no antics…just plain sincerity and
richly evident commitment in the
heavenly course, without losing the
modesty of near anonymity.
After a measured and wholesome
comparison,
one man came
to the fore of my
list: the cupbearer
turned master
builder. Nehemiah
is his name. And
the magnanimous
duty of putting up
Jerusalem’s fallen
walls fell on the
little known servant
of the Most High
God.
I would like
somebody not to
forget to mention
that day, that I
did try to reach
those I could
with the message
of the everlasting
gospel.
Adjectives might
be insufficient in
describing this enviable
personality:
faithful in service, meek in prayer,
conscientious in duty, shrewd in
leadership, cunning in strategy,
meticulous in recording, studious
in the law, gracious in victory and
inundated in gratitude.
A courtesy visit by fellow Jews to
this high official of the Persian
Kingdom at Susa the citadel (during
the reign of King Artaxerxes
Longimanus) sparked off the magnificent
call to duty. The sternly just
and inherently ingenuous governor
steadily guided the hurried task of
rebuilding the walls. In spite of the
rocky opposition from without and
the evident disquiet from within,
the task was completed in 52
days; a feat that even Israel’s enemies
attributed to God’s enabling.
Yet in contrast, the task of reviving
and reforming the people of God
within the rebuilt walls demanded
years of Nehemiah’s godly life and
leadership. And these accounts
are punctuated by several fortifying
prayers and end famously with
the words: “Remember me, O my
God, for good.”
I therefore hope that
when that day comes,
when next fresh red
soil I shall lie, that not
only men will speak of
memories fond and
dear. I certainly hope,
that on that day
when darkness I shall
not distinguish from
light and from rain I
shall not run to shelter,
that an even longer
eulogy my guardian
angel shall present.
And yes I hope, that
while the grass will
grow, the heavenly
promise given to Daniel
the Patriarch, will be graciously
extended to me as well: “But go
thou thy way till the end be : for
thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot
at the end of the days.” ~Daniel
12:13.
Yet which is more…I hope that
that day will not be an end in itself,
but the end of this beginning.
Yes, I hope that when the trumpet
of the archangel will sound, I too
will rise again. When the glory of
the Lord shall be revealed, may I
be there too. When the victory of
the faithful shall be revealed, and
the corruption of the mortal flesh
shall be no more, I shall be there
with the chosen of God. I shall
stand again. And Jesus Himself will
be there.
Testimony
Seven weeks as a literature
evangelist has taught me what
I would never have learned in
the greatest schools of this world, yes
even Princeton. I started with the goal
of saving souls only to realize God was
seeking to save my own soul. That
I was in danger just as the one with
whom I solicited with. That self was not
fully dethroned. It is through working
with Christ for the
salvation of souls
that we ourselves
are transformed
into the character of
Christ.
I thought it almost
an impossibility to
get even five books
out. My aunt thought I was crazy and
desperate for money for the summer.
Given her many years with Americans,
she thought the prospects for success
were well nigh already obliterated. I felt
the same way. And for a while I went
out in the field in my strength, in the
wisdom of my eloquence, trusting in
my position as a Princeton student. But
God taught me that all such efforts are
in vain. My selfish motives for recognition
and “recommending myself to
not the talents which we now possess
or ever will that will bring
us true success, but that
which the Lord can do
for us. What was true in
canvassing is also true in
our own spiritual experience.
Every Great Controversy
I get out, every
Steps to Christ I leave in
a home is a miracle of God. That we
should accept the offers of grace is a
miracle of God. Every rejection, every
time someone said, “I’m not interested”
reminds me of the times when I said
the same words to Christ. I am no different
from those who reject the silent
witnesses. Every day I learn to love
those who reject me and pray to God
that they may have another opportunity
to receive Him.
Through canvassing I have seen many
prayers
by
answered
Allan
and
Marube
the moving of
the Spirit like a wind. In my seventh
week, I canvassed a dentist’s office.
From previous experience, I had no
success with medical offices. But this
one was different. As usual, I introduced
myself and asked for the manager
of the business. She invited me to
her office – never happened before to
me. I talked to her about the work and
showed her the health books we had
and a copy of Christ Object Lessons.
Immediately her face lit up and every
other message book I showed grabbed
her attention. She started thinking of
people to whom she could give the
books and went so far as to ask for
two GCs. She thought not of herself
only but those she could bless with the
books, those whom I could never reach.
Without controversy the Spirit of God
was moving in her heart bringing to her
heart names of people I never met who
needed the books with the message
for this time. I left her with a 9 book
set, what other canvassers would call a
“dump-bag”. Praise be to God!
There is something higher, deeper
and wider you learn in the field that
no amount of Bible study can teach. It
is only through working for the salvation
of other souls that we ourselves
are brought into harmony with God.
The Kapenguria mission is no different.
I am confident God will perform
great things for those who humble
themselves as weak instruments
by their personal effort in the field
or by financial contribution. We do
not see much because we do not
attempt much.
Allan Marube was the chairperson
of Fountains of Christ,
at Princeton University in the
U.S.A.
In an electric circuit, the
primary aim of making the
circuit complete is to have the
bulb light. All components are
functionally integrated to achive
that result;
• Battery – provides electrical
energy.
• Wires – transmit the current
• Ammeter – measures the
amount of current in the
circuit.
• Rheostat – varies resistance
controlling the amount of
current being transmitte.
• Voltmeter – measures the
potential difference across
the bulb/cell.
• Switch – initiates the whole
process by closing the current
to complete it.
• Bulb – produces light.
CIRCUITS
In Christianity
by Deborah Onwong’a
Form 3X, Alliance Girls High School
Evidently, we can have all the
other devices ready but we will
still not have the light if the
wires are missing. Wires are the
passage for the current throughout
the transmission process.
The nature of the wires in the
circuit also determines the
brightness of the bulb. Thick and
short wires allow more current
to pass through while thin and
long wires have more impedance
hence allowing less current to
flow through.
What reference can be made in
our Christian life with regards to
the working of an electric circuit?
We are the wires through which
the current must pass in order
for the world to receive the true
light, our Lord Jesus Christ.
The switch thus represents our
power to choose between God’s
will or to reject it.
The battery signifies God’s
might, and is
the source of
the power that
is transmitted
through us.
The ammeter is
our faith which
determines how
much we can let
God be in our
lives.
The rheostat
stands for our
actions that
show how much we believe in
God and let Him work through
us.
Temptations are the voltmeters
that check us and keep us on
track as we do service for Jesus.
The bulb lighting shows the
Creative Physics
moment when our actions, faith
and temptations balance. Jesus
Christ, who is the light of the
world, is then at that moment
seen through us.
It’s up to all of us.
Our lives as Christians
are circuits.
We have the power
to start the great
work of God and
to let Him work
through us that we
may produce the
light of the world,
the everlasting
light of our Master
Jesus Christ. It is
your choice, and
it’s mine too. Hope we’ll choose
well.
The earthquake shakes the ground
The thunder claps its sound
The lightning throws its arrows
Cloud’s tears fall all around
Tell me why this happens
Why the earth acts so unkind
All of nature is only trembling
Before the Lord Almighty
Only trembling, only bowing
On its knees before God
All of nature cowers at His awesome power
Only trembling before God
But we all shake our fists
And go our own way
And we laugh at all that’s Holy
And we use His name in vain
But shouldn’t we take notice
Of how the earth is so humbled?
And listens to the sounds
As frightened ground rumbles
Its only trembling, only bowing,
On its knees before God
Thoughts
While the Ages Roll On
We all live once.
Life on earth is
too short. We live
each day as it comes, hoping
for a better tomorrow. I am
intrigued at how life is so
uncertain. All we do is hope.
Ages will roll on as stipulated
and a new generation
will be born.
Sometimes I look into the
future. Tomorrow, I will
wake up and carry on with
the day as I have always
done. The day will end and
another will come, and another
till a week will become
a month. In three months
from now, I will join Jomo
Kenyatta University of Agriculture
and Technology to
pursue my dream being an
engineer. That will be a nice
moment for me but I know
it will pass by. Five years
down the line, I will have
become what I dreamed of
years back. A new chapter
shall await me: life on my
own.
At 28, I will have identified
for myself a beautiful young
girl to be my wife.
I imagine how my wedding
shall be. That moment of
my life when I shall say “I
DO”. How for once I shall
be treated like a king by the
number of gifts of all sorts
that my friends shall give
me. Honeymoon shall follow
successfully. Then my wife
and I shall settle back to face
the reality of life. With time,
probably by 39, my family
shall be full: kids shall
brighten the house for sure.
I imagine how my 40s will
be: working well and climbing
up the ladder to become
successful, owning a multimillion-dollar
company,
being quoted as one of the
An outlook into my future
most influential people in
the financial world. I imagine
owning houses in major
cities in the world; talk of
London, Dubai, New York,
and Los Angeles and even in
our very own Nairobi. I look
into my 50s, how my kids
should have grown taller
than me. How good shall it
be?
My 60s shall tell me that my
end is approaching fast. If
lucky, I shall go into my 70s
and 80s. Eventually, my end
shall come. I can imagine
how my funeral shall be.
How my body will be taken
back to my home in the hills
of Nyamira.
I can
picture
my burial
ceremony.
What a glorious
day it shall
be. Heaven my
home: A place
with no sorrow,
no pain, no worries,
no deaths...
My eulogy
shall
be read:
“Clinton
born in
Nyamira...
passed
through Eronge Adventist,
became the first boy to make
it to Alliance High School
from his village, he got his
engineering degree from
JKUAT, Master’s Degree in
Engineering from the Ivy
League (MIT)... became a
successful engineer, held
many positions. He has left
behind many descendants...”
The final words shall be,
“May his soul rest in peace.”
Then my journey down the
grave shall begin. Meanwhile,
mourners shall be
singing the last hymns to
send me off as I rest to await
the voice of the Archangel.
“When peace like a river
attendeth my way... It is well
with my soul...” shall be the
last hymn.
My relatives shall be downcast.
However, the dead have
no use for the living who
eventually tear themselves
away to continue with the
business of life. Even they
finally have to wander away
numb but waiting for a healing
touch of good memories;
of laugh and laughter, which
would eventually return to
touch them with the breath
of life once again.
Deep beneath the ground,
maggots will be feasting.
They will munch at
my expensive coffin.
They will wear
away my beautiful
body and eventually
to my bones. I
shall be no more.
The earth shall no
longer have a place
for me any more. I
will be forgotten.
Ages might roll
on. Centuries shall
pass by and then
the D-day shall come. The
day when my faith shall
be made sight. I shall hear
the voice of the Archangel
calling my name. “Clinton,
get up!” I shall get out of the
grave with a transformed
body filled with the glory
of God. That day I shall
reunite with my beloved
whom I left behind.
The journey shall take six
days. On the seventh day,
I shall enter the gates of
heaven. How beautiful the
heavenly view shall be: a
city of gold, a river of life
flowing without ceasing.
Then shall I meet my
savior. I will thank him for
by CLINTON NYAMONGO,
FoC Incoming Chairperson
all that he did for me: how
he left his throne above and
chose to endure pain and
suffering so that we may
have the chance of salvation.
I shall be happy to meet all
Bible heroes who inspired
me a lot. Talk of Abraham,
the father of faith; Moses, the
one who spoke to God face
to face; Elijah, one who was
taken away on a chariot of
fire, and many more others.
What a glorious day it shall
be. Heaven my home-a place
with no sorrow, no pain, no
worries, no deaths, no parting
with dear ones... I shall
live there forever with Jesus
my wonderful savior. There
shall be no evil or sin whatsoever.
Sin shall be washed
away completely. God, the
father shall be with me for
ages and endless ages... This
is all my imagination but by
faith, I shall be there. Just
like Paul, my life shall be
transformed from a sinner to
a servant of the Most High
God.
Though at my tender age of
18, I believe there is something
that I can do to hasten
the second coming of Jesus.
I can preach the gospel as
a testimony to all nations.
It all starts with me... while
the ages roll on, I’ll be with
the Lord for eternity in my
home: heaven.
Our Lord Lives
The Silence of the Empty Grave Speaks Loudest of our Risen Saviour
In the book From Jihad to
Jesus, Arnold Toynbee
writes, “Find the body
of that Jew, and Christianity
crumbles. No one ever
has. No grave in the world
claims one bone of the
body of Jesus Christ. Why?
He is risen!”
Death died at the birth of
that first Easter day. That
morning, it surrendered dominion,
was led captive and
humbled, made as it were
a shadow to flee before the
light, shining in darkness.
Because Christ died and
rose again we may die to
a sin-centred life and rise
again to a new life.
Saul who became Paul encountered
the risen Christ
on the way to wipe out
Christianity in Damascus.
With God, our greatest curses are turned into o;ur
greatest blessings. With God, the best is always yet
to come.
If God can take Paul’s imprisonment and use it to
write Galatians, Ephesians, Phillipians and Colossians
to bless the world, then God can write an epistle
in your life through the prison experience you
have gone through; for the best is yet to come.
Men tend to think that God is unfair in times of
trouble and trials. They tend to think they are alone
because God doesn’t seem to answer their prayers.
But one thing we should know is that when we pray
God says, “I have a better way!“
His resistance crumbled on
the instant of the encounter.
Imprisoned towards the
end of his life, Paul wrote,
“I am not ashamed of the
gospel, because
it is the power
of God for the
salvation of
everyone who
believes.” (Romans
1:16)
The cost of following
Christ
has always
been high. But
countless thousands
have paid
it. A motiveless
fraud would not
have sustained
the church
for two thousand years
through attacks, hostility
and denial. The Lord is
Bible Quiz
ACROSS:
1. And he kneeled down,
and cried with a loud voice,
Lord, lay not this sin to their
charge. And when he had
said this, he fell asleep.
2. I have heard of thee by
the hearing of the ear: but
now mine eye seeth thee.
Wherefore I abhor myself
, and repent in dust and
ashes.
3. And said, O my God, I
am ashamed and blush to
lift up my face to thee, my
God: for our iniquities are
increased over our head,
and our trespass is grown
up unto the heavens.
4. Let the LORD, the God
of the spirits of all flesh,
set a man over the congregation,
Which may go out
before them, and which
may go in before them, and
which may lead them out,
and which may bring them
in; that the congregation of
the LORD be not as sheep
which have no shepherd.
5. Oh that thou wouldest
bless me indeed, and enlarge
my coast, and that
thine hand might be with
me, and that thou wouldest
keep me from evil,
that it may not grieve me!
And God granted him that
which he requested.
6. O LORD, I have heard
thy speech, and was afraid:
O LORD, revive thy work
in the midst of the years,
in the midst of the years
make known; in wrath remember
mercy.
7. And I prayed unto the
LORD my God, and made
my confession, and said, O
Lord, the great and dreadful
God, keeping the covenant
and mercy to them that
love him, and to them that
keep his commandments;
We have sinned, and have
committed iniquity, and
have done wickedly, and
have rebelled, even by departing
from thy precepts
and from thy judgments.
8. O my Lord, let the man of
God which thou didst send
come again unto us, and
teach us what we shall do
unto the child that shall be
born.
9. LORD, it is nothing with
thee to help, whether with
many, or with them that
have no power: help us,
O LORD our God; for we
rest on thee, and in thy
name we go against this
Crossword Puzzle:
Fill in the names of the person who said the prayer
multitude.
O LORD,
thou art our
God; let not
man prevail
against
thee.
10. .... and
said, LORD
God of
Abraham,
Isaac, and
of Israel, let
it be known
this day
that thou
art God in
Israel, and
that I am
thy servant,
and that I
have done
all these
things at
thy word.
Hear me,
O LORD,
hear me,
that this
people may
know that
thou art the
LORD God,
and that thou hast turned
their heart back again.
11..... My soul doth magnify
the Lord, And my spirit
hath rejoiced in God my
Savior. For he hath regarded
the low estate of his
handmaiden: for, behold,
from henceforth all generations
shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath
done to me great things;
and holy is his name. And
his mercy is on them that
fear him from generation
to generation.
DOWN:
1. But will God indeed dwell
on the earth? behold, the
heaven and heaven of
heavens cannot contain
thee; ...... Yet have thou respect
unto the prayer of thy
servant, and to his supplication,
O LORD my God, to
hearken unto the cry and
to the prayer, which thy servant
prayeth before thee
today.
2. For this cause I bow
my knees unto the Father
of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Of whom the whole family
in heaven and earth
is named, That he would
grant you, according to the
riches of his glory, to be
strengthened with might
by his Spirit in the inner
man; That Christ may dwell
in your hearts by faith.
3. O Lord, I beseech thee,
let now thine ear be attentive
to the prayer of thy servant,
and to the prayer of
thy servants, who desire to
fear thy name: and prosper,
I pray thee, thy servant this
day, and grant him mercy.
4. And he prayed unto the
LORD, and said, I pray thee,
O LORD, was not this my
saying, when I was yet in
my country? ....for I knew
that thou art a gracious
God, and merciful, slow to
anger, and of great kindness,
and repentest thee of
the evil.
5. O LORD, though our iniquities
testify against us,
do thou it for thy name’s
sake: for our backslidings
are many; we have sinned
against thee.
6. Then he turned his face
to the wall, and prayed
unto the LORD, saying, I
beseech thee, O LORD, remember
now how I have
walked before thee in truth
and with a perfect heart,
and have done that which
is good in thy sight.
7. O Lord, open thou my
lips; and my mouth shall
show forth thy praise. For
thou desirest not sacrifice;
else would I give it: thou
delightest not in burnt offering.
The sacrifices of
God are a broken spirit:
a broken and a contrite
heart, O God, thou wilt not
despise.
8. Father, forgive them; for
they know not what they
do.
9....prayed, and said, LORD,
I pray thee; open his eyes
that he may see. And the
LORD opened the eyes
of the young man; and
he saw: and, behold, the
mountain was full of horses
and chariots of fire.
Till very recently, Rev. Diang’a
genuinely liked me. In a
congregation where young
people were a rarity of sorts, my
regular attendance must have
scored highly with the Reverend.
A combination of factors had
played out neatly to ensure that I
was an ever present congregant
on the second last bench close
to the door.
You see, if your grandmother is
one of the Women Leaders in
I Used To Go
To Church
on Sunday
by Maxwell Ngala
the Assembly (not to be confused
with the political units,
these were simply regions in the
Voice of Salvation and Healing
Church) you have few choices
to make in life. Also, because
tithe was low and those days
people were beginning to send
their children to academies all
over, the church had not built the
Reverend a house in the church
compound from where he could
execute his mandate, in popular
parlance. This invariably meant
that the Reverend would from
time to time be hosted at home.
So, to avoid the spectre of being
called a bad egg, I would faithfully
carry his black leather bag
full of his Sunday paraphernalia
to church and tuck myself neatly
by the door and wait for a long
call or the end of the service -
whichever came first - to liberate
me.
In some of those late evening
prayers, grandma would at times
charge me with preaching or
teaching after quoting a verse
from Corinthians or Timothy
about spiritual gifts or youth
empowerment.
With the Reverend and his two
associate pastors in attendace,
I would nimbly take the ‘Witness
Stand’ and simply replay
a sermon they had done. With
gestures and facial expressions
to boot.
So,the Reverend liked me. I
helped him remember the
sermons he had preached and
he must have been glad to
see that someone was paying
attention even as Nya Pap
and her neighbour had been
snoring unapologetically last
Sunday.
Because of my English Language
teacher’s thoroughness,
I soon also became the Reverend’s
Spell Checker when
a letter was being written to
requisition some charts, flags,
etc from the Head Office in
Kisumu. Or when a letter was
being addressed to a man who
had disappeared in Nairobi and
left his mother - and the Reverend
- without ‘something’.
Fruit of the SpiritYet the Reverend
did not understand my conduct
every time the Holy Spirit
came down.
You know, in the VOSH church
then (I still think it to be so seeing
as our home is even closer
now to the church), there were
two sermons. After the lengthy
preliminaries involving the routine
fundraisers and greetings
from one of the ‘sons’ who had
come back from Kapango, the
Reverend would usher in the two
young preachers at around mid
day. Those days you didn’t go to
church if you had Sunday afternoon
plans with your girlfriend
or boyfriend.
The first preacher,called Owen
Experience
Pesa, would
flip his Bible
to some obscure text and begin
‘building’ it. He’d do so till
a streak of sweat appeared on
his face. That always happened
around 1 hour into his discourse.
By this time, the church knew
the Spirit was near... then Ken
Omondi Aura would take over to
quite plainly, to hit the home run.
Ken did not come to ‘encourage’.
He was a fiery preacher who
impressed the few young souls
around me simply because of
his gesticulations and ‘labour
intensive preaching methods’.
One hour into Ken’s sermon, we
were expected - at the prompting
of the Spirit of course - to all
fall down on the floor and begin
seeking Jesus in prayer. Women
would of course lead this great
demonstration of Spirit Power.
Older women would have lesos
at the ready to quickly cover a
young lady upon who the Spirit
had ‘fallen’ without due regard
to the young starving eyes of
young boys behind her.
Men, of course in typical alphamale
demeanour, would ensure
all women have gone down
before following nimbly and
seeking Obong’o Nyakalaga-
-Nyasach Polo gi Piny.
People would sweat, spit, cry and
about 45 minutes later, silence.
Someone would rise to prompt
the beginning of the testimony
session. We’d be told how God
had sent someone a dream
about a lost brother.How God
had ‘chucked’ some evil spirits. I
was particularly fearful of the latter
because the Reverend would
fix his gaze upon me and warn
that during prayer time any soul
not prostrating himself like the
rest would have 7 such spirits
visiting him when they left their
captor.
He would know. I never really
fell when the Spirit descended.
Every time the moment came, I
would repair to the hindermost
part of the church and quietly
seek Inspiration. Beginning with
Grand Ma’s intro: Nyasach
Oganda Israel... Almost saying
“To the Unknown God”.
-Revelation 1:7 : Look,
5. Will the
second coming
be secret
and silent?
-1st Thessalonians
4:16:
For the Lord
Himself will
descend from
heaven WITH
A SHOUT,
WITH THE
VOICE OF AN
ARCHANGEL,
AND WITH
THE TRUMPET
OF GOD...
-Matthew
24:30 : Then
tribes of the earth will
mourn, and they will see
the Son of Man COM-
ING ON THE CLOUDS
OF HEAVEN WITH
POWER AND GREAT
GLORY.
(So, in Revelation 16:15
when He says, “I am
doesn’t mean that He
will come secretly, or
‘rapture’ people secretly,
but He will come SUD-
DENLY. It will be unexpected
for they who
haven’t prepared.)
6. If someone tells
you Christ’s coming
will be in secret,
should you believe
it?
-Matthew 24:23
7. What will be the
reaction of the wicked
people?
-Revelation 6:14-16
(they try to hide in
mountains and rocks.
Remember they cannot
withstand His glory.)
8. What will be the
reaction of the righteous?
Isaiah 25:9
(let’s rejoice!)
9. So what happens
to the righteous?
- 1 Corinthians 15:51-53
(… we shall all be
changed – a gisty word
for that ’changed’ is
‘translated’)
- 1st Thessalonians 4:17:
Then we who are alive
and remain shall be
CAUGHT UP TOGETH-
ER WITH THEM IN THE
CLOUDS TO MEET THE
LORD IN THE AIR...
10. So if this being
‘caught up’ is
what we called the
RAPTURE, from the
descriptions of the
events on that day,
does it appear like
something where
some people suddenly
disappear?
(Definitely not!)
11. Now, what about
those verses saying:
‘one will be taken
and one will be left’?
We’ve already established
that the coming
will not be secret, and
both the righteous and
the wicked shall see
Him. Now, these verses
in Matthew 24:40,41
seem to be kinda tricky.
Lets put them in their
context and see what
Jesus was saying His
coming will be like.
-Matthew 24:37-41 :
As it was in the days
of Noah, so it will be at
the coming of the Son
of Man. For in the days
before the flood, people
were eating and drinking,
marrying and giving
in marriage, up to
the day Noah entered
the ark; and they knew
nothing about what
would happen UNTIL
THE FLOOD CAME
AND TOOK THEM ALL
AWAY. THAT IS HOW
IT WILL BE AT THE
COMING OF THE SON
OF MAN. Two men will
be in the field; one will
be taken and the other
left. Two women will be
grinding with a hand
mill; one will be taken
and the other left.
(So He was saying that
the time of Noah, where
the flood TOOK them
away. As we already
said, we cannot withstand
His glory if we
have just one unforgiven
sin.)
-See also 2nd Thessalonians
1:9
12. So His coming
shall be unexpected
(but not secret) to
some. So what do
we do?
-Matthew 24:42
(Get prapared!)
13. So, what happens
to the wicked
or the unsaved?
-2nd Thessalonians 1:7-
10, 2nd Thessalonians
2:8
(They are destroyed, …
consumed. Note that
your translation may say
‘everlasting destruction’,
but don’t worry, we’re
studying that next.)
14. So where do the
wicked remain after
they are destroyed
by the glory of His
coming during this
period?
-Jeremiah 25:33
(Remember that Jeremiah’s
prophecy goes far
beyond ancient Israel. It
reaches into the future.
It describes a universal
destruction from one
end of the earth to the
other of those who rebel
against God)
time? Devastated or
just fine with some
‘raptured’ people
missing?
-Revelation 16:17-20 (pay
attention to vs. 20)
-Jeremiah 4:23-27
(very devastated!)
16. Meanwhile,
where will the righteous
be and what
what will they be doing?
For how long?
-John 14:1-3, Revelation
20:4-5
(In a nutshell, we shall
be “in My father’s
house”, reigning - and
judging - with Christ for
1000 years. Notice vs. 5:
at this time the wicked
are SOOO dead.)
17. Where will Satan
be during these
1,000 years?
-Revelation 20:1-3
(“An angel…bound him…
and cast him into the
bottomless pit...til the
thousand years should
be fulfilled.” The term
“bottomless pit” has an
identical meaning to
the description “without
form, and void” of
Jeremiah 4:23. Satan is
thus bound to the earth,
unable to tempt anyone.
The Bible uses the term
chains not as literal
chains but CHAINS OF
DARKNESS. -- See 2
Peter 2:4)
18. Oh, by the way,
how many
resurrections are
-John 5:28-29 (two!)
-Revelation 20:5-
6 (Notice that, here
John states that the
righteous that He just
described in vs. 4 are
the ones who took
part in the 1st resurrection.
That logically
means that there’s a
2nd resurrection,(and
a second death, as vs.
29 says..) We’ll find out
when those happen.)
upon
the
19. So when are the
wicked dead, and
those that were
wicked living that
were destroyed
second
coming,
resurrected
again?
-Revelation 20:5, first
part.
(after the 1000 years
are finished..)
...w e shall be
“in My
Fath e r’s
hous e”,
reign ing ...
with Christ
for 1000
years...
20. What do Satan
and the wicked
dead who have been
raised at the second
resurrection do?
3. How many people
-Rev 20:7
will see Him come?
15. And how will
(Now they prepare for
coming as a thief”,
His coming will be like the world be at that there?
called ‘New Jerusalem’,
as we’ll see next.)
21. Where does the
Holy City—New
Jerusalem—come
from?
-Revelation 21:2
(By the way you realize
that this verse is not in
chronology with the others,
coz it’s in the vision
in ch. 21 that John says
that the city descends
from heaven,
so it’s definitely
the
same
city in
ch.
20, as
that’s
where
the
righteous
are.)
