NEW STATIONS IN SAMOA Courtesy of the Pacific Islands Report website is
this item: SAMOA’S RADIO POLYNESIA CELEBRATES 11TH YEAR, LAUNCHES
NEW STATIONS APIA, Samoa (October 1, 2000 - Samoa Observer/PINA Nius
Online)—Radio Polynesia Ltd. celebrated two milestones during the weekend: It officially
marked the 11th year of operation as Samoa’s sole non-government commercial
radio station, and it launched two additional stations. Magic FM on frequency 98.1 will
continue with a program format of only Top 40 hits, K Lite FM on frequency 101.1 will
provide a program format of easy listening music, and Talofa FM on frequency 96.1 will
provide an all Samoan language and music program. To mark the occasion, Radio
Polynesia Ltd. organised a Market Day at the To’oa Salamasina Hall. More than 30
local businesses set up stalls in the hall and provided shoppers with a chance to experience
a “Mall in a Hall” experience. The Samoa Performing Arts Institute added a
touch of class with the entertainment. In doing so, they continued their quest for Samoa’s
top performing artists with the Samoa National Talent Competition. The popular
New Zealand based Samoan band Jamoa Jam added the final touches with live performances
to cap off the day. Events were broadcast live on air not just on one, but on
all three stations. (Matt Francis)
AUSTRALIA: NEW FM LICENSES The Australian Broadcasting Authority has
invited applications for a new commercial radio broadcasting licence in Melbourne.
The reserve price for the licence is $500,000 and the new service will operate on 91.5
MHz on the FM band. Applications also called for a new license for Gosford, NSW, to
operate on 104.5 MHz with a $100,000 reserve. (ABA, via Matt Francis)
ZORRO AND WONDERWOMAN JOIN SUPERMAN IN COURT The Edge DJ
Iain Stables, dressed as Superman, was joined by supporters wearing Zorro and
Wonderwoman outfits when he re-appeared in the Hamilton District Court yesterday
on charges of impersonating a police officer and misusing a telephone. He is still yet to
plead, and was remanded again to appear on October 18. Why the Superman suit?
Because “you can’t put a superhero in prison”, he told the Waikato Times.
And also because it felt nice. The court case has turned out to be a rather successful
story and print reports all over the world. (e-MedianStrip October 6, 2000)
