INTRODUCTION
THANH TIEU - PRESIDENT
Hello! Before you even flip even further, if you are not yet aware of what exactly
“KIWIN’S” is, there is little depth and perception to just how unique this club is, and
the pages beyond will in correspondence, hold little meaning. Therefore, here is a
little background information: between 1973 and 1974, former California-Nevada-Hawaii
(CNH) District Governor Sid Smith wanted his daughters in high school to
be able to perform community service, and at the time, Key Club was strictly for
males. The tale stretches on further, but to condense, long story short: KIWIN’S is
now the 32nd District in Key Club international, now open to everyone in our
respected high school branches! KIWIN’S has divisions, and La Quinta’s location
corresponds to Jet’s!
I could go on and on about how great this organization is, but action and attending
one of our events best exemplifies what my words cannot ever measure up to.
The experience of serving and meeting new friends along the way is what makes
this club, in my opinion, one of the greatest experiences I’ve had the fortune of
being a part of, and I hope to share these pieces and memories with you! I hope to
see you at an event wink wonk ;-)

Hello KIWINNERS! Thank you for opening up this newsletter! This term, we want to be
able to increase contact between KIWIN’S as a whole and the members (YOU!!!)
through a series of newsletters! In these publications, you’ll find event highlights, a
list of service events that KIWIN’S participated in, summaries of club, divisional, and
district events, members of the month, and more! As time goes on, we hope to
make this newsletter something that members of both La Quinta KIWIN’S and other
schools can enjoy, and turn it into a platform of communication that is not only
informative but also fun and interactive! I hope you enjoy this first release, and
please look forward to more newsletters in the future kiwis!

THE BOARD
THANH TIEU - PRESIDENT
Hello!! My name is Thanh, and I'll be serving as the LQ
KIWIN'S president for the '17-'18 term!! I love to end my
sentences with two exclamation points, which many
people claim is extra, but hey, if it's not extra, it's not me. I
love many, many things in life!! Except furries, the babadook,
spiders, mom's telling me to clean my room (rip :[ ),
and HOMEWORK. I collect many things, such as AP
number label stickers, memories, pickup lines, bad jokes,
and recommendations to watch (shows, kdramas,
movies, you name it). I hope to see or meet you around
at events, person reading this! ;)
THAO VY HUYNH - VICE PRESIDENT
HOWDY TOASTER STROODLES~ Adventure is my game and
spontaneous is my middle name! I like to spend time with
those I love and make unforgettable memories!! I am
seldom home but when I am, I want so spend ample time
with my parents and grandmother

BROOKE TRAN - RECORDING SECRETARY
Hey LQties, my name is Brooke Tran and I'm your '17-'18
Recording Secretary! I'm an upcoming senior and I've
been in KIWIN'S ever since my freshman year. It's quite
hard for me to talk about myself in 4-7 sentences, but in
short, my KIWIN'S journey ultimately began at my first
event three years ago when I volunteered at the Alzheimer's
Walk and met some of the '14-'15 board members
who made me feel like I belonged in a family with them!
Because of that, I've been in this club ever since and I've
made it my own goal to get every single member to feel
the same way I felt about this club so long ago (and still
do!) Some of my interests include art (basically drawing,
painting, graphic design!), Korean dramas, and obviously
KIWIN'S! All in all, I cannot wait to meet so many more of
you guys and make KIWIN'S an amazing experience for
you all! :)
KIMBERLY NGUYEN - CORRESP. SECRETARY
¡Hola! Annyeong! Hello! My name is Kimberly Nguyen or
Kimbap or Kim anything but honestly. Something about
me is that I'm 5'0 feet but that's okay because that height
ain't never stopping me!!! Fun fact isn't that I don't eat
any type of seafood! Also I love sports, I play basketball,volleyball,
and I love to swim!! Anywho, I'm excited
to get to know and meet everyone!! ¡Adios! Annyeong!

DARLENE DO - COMMITTEE CHAIR
YOOHOO!! I'm Darlene Do, the '17-'18 Committee Chair. I
am very excited to be working with all the kiwis out there
this term! Things I'm into: tennis, money/ moneymaking,
long walks on the beach watching the sun set on the
horizon. Not all true, but if you really want to get to know
me, I'm just a phone call, text, or Facebook message
away! If you ever need to bounce back from taking L' s,
I'm here Let's skrrt skrrt into another amazing term!

KATIE NGUYEN - JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE
Hello! My name is Katie Nguyen and I am a upcoming
Junior! I am currently the Junior Representative for LQ
KIWIN'S!! One thing that no one knows about me (up until
now) is that I once took an acting class, thinking one day
I might be a movie star. HEHE My favorite thing about
KIWIN'S has to be the environment at every event associated
with KIWIN'S. The people make sure that everyone
has a great time! I can't wait to meet all you lovely
people during this term! Don't hesitate to message when

ADRIANE NGUYEN - SOPHOMORE REP.
Hello, my name is Adriane Nguyen and I am the sophomore
representative of LQ KIWIN'S. I am an upcoming
junior who is an extreme bts enthusiast. If not volunteering
on the weekends, I stay home and rest up for the next
week of school. I have little to no hobbies that an average
poor high schooler doesn't do. Thank you and I hope

Hi my name is Duong and I'm currently LQ KIWIN'S spirit
chair. People know me for being too troll in every life. I
consider myself as a chill person and can help resolve
negative issues in the environment. I really like food so if
anyone go out for food hook me up! If ya'll didn't know
searchers have say that Asian food is healthy in general

ADELA TRAN - BULLETIN EDITOR
HEEELLOO it's Adela and I'm this year's bulletin editor!!!
This is my third time writing this description of myself omg
since my first one sounded rlly fake AHAH and I accidentally
deleted the second one. So here I am writing it
a third time. I really don't like writing about myself but
what I do like is going to KIWIN'S events!!! xD I'm super
looking foward to what this term has to bring and I know
it will be a great year for everyone!!!!
SANDRA WHITE - TECHNICIAN CHAIR
NYELLO!! I'm Sandra White and I'm serving as your La
Quinta KIWIN'S Technician Chair this term! I'm an upcoming
junior and on the polo/swim team, and outside
of KIWIN'S I like to spend my time drawing and keeping
up with my favorite games and shows! This next year I
hope to get to know more of you guys and share my
love for the club with all of our members!!

PAUL DUPLESSIS - ADVISOR
Hello all, my name is Paul Duplessis and I currently
belong to Fountain Valley Kiwanis and serve as your
Kiwanis advisor. I have had the pleasure of doing
that for about twelve years now. As some of you may
or may not know, I went to La Quinta High School
(class of 2000) and was one of the people who
helped found your KIWIN'S club. I'm very proud to see
something I helped create almost 17 years ago still
going strong. Even though I am leaving California for
Japan, I look forward to working with you all this
summer, up until the end of September. If you ever
need anything, never hesitate to contact me.
NHUNG TRAN - INTL. TRUSTEE CANDIDATE
Hello LQ-ties! My name is Nhung Tran and I am an
incoming senior. To tell you a little about myself, I am
interested in art, technology, meeting new people,
and your dog. I previously served as the LQ KIWIN’S
Club Bulletin Editor and the Head of Graphics in the
CNH KIWIN’S District Technology Committee my sophomore
year, and the CNH KIWIN’S District Bulletin
Editor and the Co-head of the same District Technology
Committee my junior year. This year, I will be
running for the office of Key Club International Trustee!
I just want to say thank you for being a part of this
club! You get what you put into it, so the more you
invest in this KIWIN’S club, the more opportunities and
connections will present themselves to you. KIWIN’S is
really important to me so as the new year progresses,
I hope you can see why our club and organization is
so amazing. As you become more involved, you will
realize it is more than just a club; it is an international
organization and it is a family.

LARRY LAM - DISTRICT CONVENTION CHAIR
Hey Aztecs, I'm Larry Lam, your District Convention
Chair for the 2017-2018 term! I've been a member of
KIWIN'S for three years, going into my fourth and I'm
beyond excited for this upcoming term with you all. For
newer members, I encourage you all to stay in KIWIN'S
and take the opportunities for leadership because it
will definitely impact your high school career and also
give you the chance to meet new friends, make countless
memories, and better yourself too! Additionally, this
year I will be in charge of planning District Convention,
an event where KIWIN'S members from all over California
meet up to celebrate a year of service and
achievements we made as a district, and I HIGHLY REC-
OMMEND GOING TO IT BECAUSE IT'LL BE SO FUN!!! If you
ever see me around school or at a KIWIN'S event, feel
free to hit me up and talk about anything! Again, I
can't wait to see you all and I welcome you to the new
term.

Hey LQ! You may know me as your photography historian
from last year, but I'll be serving our division, Jet, this
year as Bulletin Editor! I hope you guys will enjoy my
newsletters and to see y'all at LQ and Jet events! I'm

SATURDAY, MAY 13TH
KOREAN AMERICAN
CULTURE FESTIVAL
On a sunny Saturday morning, KIWINNERs woke up bright and early to volunteer
at the eighth annual Korean American Culture Festival. Depending on
which of the three shifts they were working, the volunteers were assigned a
variety of tasks, from setting up the event to assisting with children’s booths.
Member Daisy Havo, who aided with setup, describes, “My partner and I
felt extremely professionalbecause we had a clipboard. We checked off
the names of the companies fundraising and directed them to their
booths.” The KIWINNERs helped to create a smooth start for the event, and
by midday, the festival was up and running, crowded with people eager for
a taste of Korean culture. Alluring aromas wafted through the air from the
many food stands as children darted through the endless activities available
to them. The KIWIN’S volunteers engaged the kids as they worked at
the face painting and human foosball stations. Member Jimmy Pham states,
“We worked at the bouncy castle and I got to work with kids who reminded
me of the pure good in people. Everyone there was genuinely having a
good time,” and this rang true for both the festival goers as well as the volunteers.

FRIDAY, JUNE 23 - SUNDAY, JUNE 25
FOUNTAIN VALLEY
SUMMERFEST
Sun’s out, school’s out, and the festival tents go up at the Fountain
Valley Recreational Center! The ferris wheel stands tall against the sunny
blue sky, watching over the festival spectators bustle through the endless
food stands and exhilarating rides. With shifts ranging throughout the day
on Friday, June 23rd, and Sunday, June 25th, members found themselves
working a variety of activities where they were needed. Even before the fair
grounds became crowded with people, KIWINNERs were there to help set
up the canopies and arrange supplies for the food vendors on Friday morning.
Then on Sunday, other members returned for another shift to prepare
food for booths that raise money for Kiwanis, such as Slush Puppies and Bacon-wrapped
Hotdogs. Volunteers also circulated the festival and wiped
down tables. Member David Ho describes his experience, “By being able to
cooperate with tons of the staff not only in Kiwanis, but also the community
of Fountain Valley through circulating booths and adjusting the sound
system for the stage performers, the event gave me a whole new perspective
of the size and environment our community offers.” Through their hard
work, KIWIN’S volunteers helped celebrate Fountain Valley’s sixtieth anniversary
and bring in a fun, refreshing start to the summer!

CLUB EVENTS
LQ KIWIN’S PRESENTS:
A FLORA OF FAREWELLS
In a room with a prominent scent of sausages, LQ KIWIN'S held our end
of the year banquet: A Flora of Farewells! A beautiful photo booth accompanied
the lit music and the decorated tables as members and
board members of both the new and retired term joined to share one
last dinner. With a variety choices in the German cuisine, we had a
guten tag (good time). After that, Darlene and Thao Vy presented
awards for all the attendees ranging from Most Likely to Snapchat
About Pooping to Most Likely to Bathe in Ketchup With Your Cousin. The
mood turned from outrageously funny to reminiscent and sentimental
as we moved on to the senior speeches. Ultimately, it became clear
that in comes the new and out goes the old, but not without the endless
memories and everlasting friendships from the one and only ohana:
KIWIN'S.

LETTERS
TO MANATEES
On our first DCM of the new 17'-18' term, Letters to Manatees, Adela
Tran's hard work and adjustment to the new term has been shown by
being announced as Officer of the Month! Also, with LQ's spirit and outstanding
work, we have been awarded as Club of the Month! The new
divisional board had been announced and 3 of them are from our very
own school as well as Larry Lam, being the new District Convention
Chair. After the usual meeting, everyone migrated towards the tables
and wrote letters and made pictures to give to other manatees to commerate
the past term!! Letters were distributed at Jet Banquet/June
DCM where everyone celebrated and said goodbyes to the old term
and welcomed the new term of 17'-18'.

JET BANQUET:
A MAD MANATEA PARTY
The schools of Jet Divison KIWIN'S gathered to celebrate a whole year
of service as a thriving division. Members reflected upon the past year
while enjoying dinner. They also celebrated by taking pictures at the
photo booth and all around the gorgeous scenery that Kiwanisland provided.
Members also watched the Mr./Ms. Manatee Pageant and
received recognition from the division. IP presidents and divisional
board were retired and the new were installed. To finish off the banquet,
members took more pictures and danced the night away.

adventure after the event!

Kimberly proved herself a dutiful and
responsible freshman at the Ethan
Allen event, serving as a helpful volunteer
and doing whateer the event
coordinators asked of her. She has
been very sweet and open to getting
to know everyone around her - members,
board, and strangers alike! She
has expresssed interest in attending
more events in the summer, so catch
her there!

This officer for the month for June almost
seemed superhuman - unless you stopped
her in hallways at school. Then, you could
personally hear coming out of her mouth
every one to two sentences the words:
“saddo,” “depresso,” and “stresso.” For
someone who claims to have horrible time
management, Sandra has balanced
co-heading decor for LQ KIWIN’S banquet,
attended one of the most events as a
board member for June, and helped
create one of the first newsletters LQ
KIWIN’S has had in two years!
“KIWIN'S is my home. I don’t know where

Pineapple, otherwise known as trái thơm in my
mother tongue, belongs in, and on, many places.
One such place is the warm, oily abode of the
molten mmozzarella cheese of pizza. I truly believe
that pineapple belongs on pizza because the citrus
cuts through the grease for a more refined and fresh
flavor party in your mouth :)
MINHTRANG NGUYEN
Personally I don’t like having something sweet on my pizza. I
like pineapple by itself but just not on something that’s meant
to be savory.

Pineapple is really good and it makes the pizza spicy!!!!!!!!!
Pineapples were given to us for a Reason (to make our pizzas
spicy). Non-pineapple pizzas are boring and lack personality.

Tbh, pineapple is kinda gross on pizza, like, the squishiness
couples with the weird sweetness and it kinda ruins the whole
point of getting pizza. Like, why would you ruin an entire
pizza? Hawaiian pizza is honestly the worst pizza, I mean, ham
on pizza is not good, it’s not good on most things, and the
overall balance of the dish is thrown off, not to mention you’re
coupling pineapple with CHEESE, AND LET’S ALSO NOT FORGET
THE FACT THAT WHEN YOU EAT PINEAPPLE PINEAPPLE EATS YOU
