historical heart of the city, pedestrians and cyclists
reign supreme. if you’re visiting by car, then follow the
signposts along the ring road and approach routes
for easy access to the various parking facilities. the
peripheral car parks are located at walking distance
from the historical sights. information signs provide
descriptions of various thematic itineraries that will
take you from your parking location along some of
the city’s monuments to the low-traffic city centre.

than 300 listed monuments, four of which are inscribed on
UNESCO’s World Heritage list.

Wouters left behind a towering body of work.
highlights from his oeuvre can be admired in
a major exhibition at schepenhuis Museum. it
features masterpieces in the collection of the
Municipal Museums of Mechelen alongside
longer-term loans from the royal Museum of
fine arts in antwerp, which holds the world’s
largest Wouters collection.

Mechelen’s most iconic landmark is the imposing
st rumbold’s tower. a stroll around the skywalk
atop the tower is the ideal way to begin your visit
to the city: it offers a breathtaking 360-degree
panorama of Mechelen and far beyond. on a
clear day, the view stretches from the atomium
in brussels in the south to the port of antwerp in
the north. the actual ascent of the tower is an
equally unforgettable experience: uniquely, the
tower houses not one but two carillons as well
as a splendid clockwork mechanism, which are
maintained by the tower guard. should you bump

old and neW the city centre boasts no fewer than eight
in addition to its historical heritage, Mechelen
also offers some wonderful examples of
contemporary urban design: brand-new housing
developments, exquisite renovations and other
recent architectural gems are a testimony
to the city’s vitality. the most recent jewel in
Mechelen’s architectural crown is the conversion
of the kazerne dossin by bob Van reeth.
historical churches, each of which holds treasures
of ecclesiastical art. the coloured light that falls
through the stained-glass windows and the serene
atmosphere that pervades these monuments make
for a unique visiting experience. here you can
admire precious paintings by famous old masters
such as rubens and Van dijck. st John’s church
has some exceptional 14th-century murals predating
the early netherlandish school of painting.

for any visitor. de Wit represents four generations
of excellence in the cleaning and conservation

Mechelen and sint-katelijne-Waver live up to their
name as the hub of the market gardening region.
right at the heart of belgium’s and europe’s
vegetable garden lies the vegetable auction of
sint-katelijne-Waver. here, vegetables such as
chicory, leek, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and
asparagus are traded on a daily basis. combine
your guided tour of the auction with a visit to
the Proefstation voor de Groententeelt or the
vegetable museum ’t Grom.

the authentic brewery het anker (‘the anchor’),
which produces the famous gouden carolus. this
special brew, which already titillated the taste

The human rights theme is not randomly chosen, but deeply ingrained in the
history of Mechelen. The Kazerne Dossin has been redesignated as a Memorial,
Museum and Documentation Centre on Holocaust and Human Rights, a unique
project in Europe. The inauguration of the converted casern coincides with a
temporary exhibition entitled Newtopia: The State of Human Rights, in which
contemporary art and human rights engage in a bold dialogue. A human-rightsthemed
guided tour of Mechelen explores some of these issues further.

Between 1942 and 1944, the Dossin
casern was transformed by the Nazis
into SS Sammellager Mecheln. Under
this name, it served as a transit camp
from where over 25,000 Jews and
Roma were deported by train to
Auschwitz-Birkenau. In September
2012, the site will reopen as Kazerne
Dossin. Memorial, Museum and
Documentation Centre on Holocaust
and Human Rights. The centre
intends to keep alive the memory of
the Holocaust and it gives a face to
19,000 of the deported. Their tragic
story is placed in a broader human
rights perspective with an underlying
motif of hope.

The opening of the Kazerne Dossin
coincides with the exhibition
Newtopia: The State of Human
Rights. The exhibition, which
confronts contemporary art with
different aspects of human rights, is
the first of its kind. Spread out over
four venues in the centre of Mechelen
– Kazerne Dossin, Hof van Busleyden,
Congress and Heritage Centre Lamot,
and Cultuurcentrum Mechelen– it
features multimedia art by various
artists, including some internationally
acclaimed names from countries
where human rights abuse continues
to be rampant.

the hanswijk procession is a tradition dating back
to 1273. every year in May, a devotional statue
representing our lady of hanswijk is paraded
through the centre of Mechelen. this authentic
and colourful spectacle, involving hundreds of
actors and extras, offers a fascinating blend of folk
and historical pageantry with religious tableaux.
