C anakkale (Hellespont in Classical Geography) lying in northern-west Turkey is a city located on the east coast of the Dardanelles, connecting the Sea of Marmara with the Aegean Sea. The city, being the scene of the Sea Battle of Canakkale-Gelibolu (Gallipoli) is famous for the great variety of elaborate ceramic products of the18th and 19th centuries created within the town itself and its surroundings. Despite being from this late period, the products reflect different and remarkable features in respect of colour, shape and design. Being different to each other, spouts, stems, handles and bodies are pieces of great skill. Pitchers, water storage jugs, large storage jars, cups, bowls (with and without lids), charcoal braziers, plates, coffee cups, candle sticks, vases, fire eases, saucers, vessel shaped oil lamps oflate periods, latticed fruit bowls, kettles, water flasks, cigarette holders, candy bowls with bibhelots, all reflect a great variety of shapes and forms. The forms are made of reddish earthenware clay hav- Water jug, the mouth is in the shape ing a beige slip and glazed of a stylised horse's head with a transparent glaze. On the slip, under the glaze, the designs are drawn using manganese and cobalt oxides. The sculptural forms of the ceramic products of Canakkaledifferfrom thoseofIznik, Kutahaya. The figures of asses, birds with wings, frogs and Ceramic Products of Canakkale (18th-19th Century) Zehra Cobanli cats are all used in the designs. Let me try to summarise the most common ones in detail. Water Jugs The jugs described as narrow-brimmed earthenware containers swollen in the middle, were used to hold oil, honey, grape molasses or yoghurt. The jugs for decorative purposes used to be ornamented with reliefs and tiny mirrors. The jugs of Canakkale are IS-S0cm high, having body diameters ranging from 8-2Scm and the stands (feet) 7- 21cm. The handles, being shaped with hands, are are either functional or simply decorative. Their heights range from I1.S- 24cm and widths I.S- 3.Scm. The feet of the jugs differ in shape. The jugs for decorative purposes have high staired and nodded feet while those used for daily activities are either without feet or have plain feet. The spouts are in the shape of a stylised horse'S head, eat's head or that of a bird and there are also plain ones or those having strainers or lids attached. Plates The plates are made of red earthenware clay and have white and cream coloured slips with decorations brushed on the slips. They are fired after being given a coating of transparent glaze.
