Hello and welcome to the

are launching with the brilliant Lisa Richardson! We also look back at activities across
the US in connection with the World Wide Knitting in Public Day, tell you about a
fabulous exhibition at the stunning Chatsworth House in Derbyshire and bring you

Team Day Out
Last month, the team had the pleasure
of visiting the fabulous and iconic
Chatsworth House in Derbyshire,
England. The journey is not a long one,
winding from Huddersfield through
the stunning Peak District via dappled
woodlands and sparkling reservoirs and
eventually arriving at the immaculate
grounds of the historical stately home.
Chatsworth House is renowned for the
quality of its art, landscape and hospitality,
and it has evolved through the centuries to
reflect the tastes, passions and interests of
succeeding generations. Today, Chatsworth
contains works of art that span 4,000 years,
from ancient Roman and Egyptian sculpture,
and masterpieces by Rembrandt, Reynolds
and Veronese, to work by outstanding modern
artists, including Lucian Freud, Edmund de
Waal and David Nash. There are over 30 rooms

to explore, from the magnificent Painted Hall,
regal State Rooms, restored Sketch Galleries
and beautiful Sculpture Gallery.
Although a well worthy visit on its own merit,
the reason behind the day out was the presence
of an exhibition dedicated to fashion through
the decades. Curated by Hamish Bowles, Editor
of American Vogue, the collection is simply
breathtaking, encompassing everything from
iconic wedding dresses through to mourning
wear. Also on display is the wardrobe of 18th
century “Empress of Fashion” Georgiana,
Duchess of Devonshire, Bess of Hardwick,
one of the most powerful women of the 16th
century and Adele Astaire, the sister and dance
partner of Fred Astaire.
The fascinating tour of the house culminated
in a dinner party scene in the entertaining
room, adorned by stunningly eye-catching
pieces from the likes of Vivienne Westwood
and other stalwarts of the fashion scene.

World Wide Knit in
Public Day 2017
Last month saw the celebrated World Wide
Knitting in Public Day, here we take a look
at how this was celebrated in North America.
North America celebrated World Wide Knit in
Public Day on Saturday the 10 th of June. The
goal of the event was to promote knitting in
public settings to allow the non-knitting (and
crocheting) public to learn more about the
needle arts. Rowan knitters, active in their
town’s events, large and small, shared details
and photos with us –
Roslindale, Massachusetts
Adjacent to the Boston area, knitters held
their event at the Farmer’s Market in Adams
Park, promoted by the Roslindale Village Main
Streets association. Knitters and crocheters
mingled throughout the sunny spring midday
event, sitting in beach chairs behind the
bandstand and enjoying the comradeship.
Roslindale has an active knitting and crochet
community, also sponsoring a successful annual
yarn and book sale to raise funds for their local
library.
Minneapolis, Minnesota
The Minnesota Knitters’ Guild made their
World Wide Knit in Public event a party, taking
over the beer hall of Surlys Brewing Company,
a local micro-brewer, located adjacent to their
home at the Textile Center of Minnesota in
Minneapolis. Members of this large guild sat
together at long tables, or broke off into their
own groups, catching up with friends and
fellow members while enjoying a meal, and
maybe a pint or two!
This active guild meets monthly at the Textile
Center, state funded arts and textile museum
and teaching space. The guild also sponsors
charity knitting, Stitch and Pitch events and

their two-day annual educational event,
Yarnover.
Norfolk, Virginia
Knitters in the area around Norfolk, Virginia
celebrated World Wide Knit in Public Day
and beat the June heat at their event, held in
the enclosed Huber Court at the Chrysler
Museum of Art, an enclosed courtyard inspired
by 15 th century Florentine artwork.
120+ attendees of all ages enjoyed the
afternoon, sponsored by local retailer Baa
Baa Sheep Yarn Shop, bringing their knitting,
crochet and portable drop spindles, spinning
wheels and table looms to encompass the
fiber arts. There was also a tour highlighting
fiber-work on display at the museum, as well
as the opportunity to share in creating a yarn
bombing/sculpture with a local artisan.

Celebrating
30 Years!
To honour a fabulous thirty years of the wonderful
German retailer Wolle und Design, there will be a
special event at the store on August 19 th including a
workshop with Martin Storey, a sneak peek preview
of the brand new limited edition Rowan Selects
yarns and an exclusive look at the new autumn
collections. In addition to this, there will be the
opportunity to meet Martin at a book signing.

Introducing the
Lisa Richardson
Crochet Along
2017
We are excited to bring you news of a brand new
crochet along, starting in August! The talented
Lisa Richardson has designed a beautiful and
colourful throw using Rowan’s popular Felted
Tweed yarn. Supported by tips, tricks and how
to videos, the project will be released in thirteen
stages starting from August 3 rd and culminating
on November 16 th .
