What should I do about groceries??
We’re sorry to let you know that Vancouver is not only one of the most expensive cities in terms of renting your own
place, it’s also prohibitively expensive to buy groceries here. That means you have to be careful in choosing where to
go. If you have a little more time, leaving campus to do your groceries can save you a lot of money.
Expensive
Whole Foods Save-On-Foods Local Grocers Safeway No Frills
Cheap
A good strategy is to divide up whatever you need to buy between two different spots. For example, a lot of students
like to buy non-perishables like pasta and staple items like milk at No Frills at Alma & 4th, and fresh produce at a
local grocer like Persia Foods on MacDonald & Broadway. For many, No Frills will be the go-to place, because it is
affordable and has all the basics. If you want higher quality groceries, and are prepared to spend more, you could
always go to Save-On-Foods, or even Whole Foods.
One note on the side: please bring your own bags or purchase a few reusable bags the first time you go.
Vancouverites are trying to cut down on plastic bags and waste, so do your part to contribute, please.
Also be aware that you are required to sort your garbage – you are not allowed to put food waste in your regular
garbage bin, for example. Most residences and houses have composting options available. Please also recycle any
containers and paper.
