The center for Middle eastern Studies (cMeS) is an Organized
research Unit of International and Area Studies at the University of
California, Berkeley . It was founded in 1963 with a mandate to
promote excellence in Middle Eastern Studies at the University and
beyond . With an affiliated faculty and academic staff of 75
(supplemented by an annual contingent of 12 visiting faculty and 21
graduate student instructors), the CMES coordinates Middle Eastrelated
language and area studies courses in 26 different departments
and seven professional schools, while also providing academic
advising for an undergraduate major and minor . Our newsletter is
published twice yearly, during the fall and spring semesters .
