The International News Weekly July 07, 2017 | Toronto 18 China not interested in meeting Modi at G20 summit as border face-off drags on The Canadian Parvasi Prime Minister Narendra Modi may not meet his Chinese counterpart Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Germany as the two Asian rivals are locked in an unprecedented border face-off. As Prime Minister Modi left Hamburg after finishing his three-day visit to Israel, there have been hopes that his meeting with the Chinese President on the sidelines of the G20 summit may ease border face-off between the two countries. But Beijing, which has accused New Delhi of transgression into its territory, said on Thursday that the ``atmosphere is not right for the meeting.'' Ruling out the meeting, a Chinese Foreign Ministry official said, ``The atmosphere is not right for a bilateral meeting between President Xi and Prime Minister Modi.'' The Chinese spokesperson said, "As for the arrangement of the bilateral meeting (at G20) between President Xi and Prime Minister Modi, I have to point out that recently Indian troops trespassed into China and obstructed normal activities of Chinese troops in Doklam region.'' The spokesperson added, "This endangers China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and damaged the political foundations of bilateral relations between China and India. "We hope India can immediately withdraw the border troops to the Indian side of the boundary and uphold peace and tranquillity of the China-India border areas.I think this is the pre-condition for any meaningful peace talks between the two sides." Warning India of "serious consequences" if it did not pull out troops from the disputed Doklam area, the Chinese spokesperson said, "Only when India pulls back troops, the status quo will be restored."Under the pretext of protecting Bhutan, India has illegally entered China's territory hindering negotiation process between China and Bhutan.'' On Wednesday, the Global Times, which is a mouthpiece of the Chinese government, said China must teach India "a bitter lesson" and kick it out of the disputed area.
