Two Indo-<strong>Canadian</strong> youths<br />
arrested for robbing taxi<br />
driver in Brampton<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Canadian</strong> <strong>Parvasi</strong><br />
BRAMPTON: Two Indo-<strong>Canadian</strong> young men have<br />
been arrested for robbing a taxi driver.<br />
Gurjit Sohal, 19, and Parwinder Sohal, 21, both of<br />
Brampton have been charged with robbing the taxi<br />
driver of his cell phone.<br />
<strong>The</strong> incident happened in the area of Airport Road<br />
and Queen<br />
Street East<br />
in the early<br />
hours on Sunday<br />
when the<br />
two accused<br />
hired a taxi<br />
to drop them<br />
home from<br />
a local banquet hall. <strong>The</strong> accused reportedly asked<br />
the 40-year-old taxi driver to give them his cell phone<br />
so that they could make a call. When they refused to<br />
return the cell phone, the driver stopped the vehicle<br />
and three of them got out of the taxi. <strong>The</strong> two accused<br />
punched the driver multiple times and fled with his<br />
cell phone. Police later arrested them and the victim<br />
was taken to hospital.<br />

reconnect with community<br />
members, the barbeque<br />
was attended by Minister<br />
Navdeep Bains as special<br />
guest and MPs Sonia Sidhu,<br />
Kamal Khera, Ruby<br />
Sahota and Raj Grewal.<br />

MPs thanked theirsupporters,<br />
volunteers, staff<br />
and their respective<br />
Brampton Liberal riding<br />
associations for their<br />
time and energy to keep<br />
the Liberal flag waving in<br />
Brampton.<br />
<strong>The</strong> MPs told community<br />
members that while<br />
they represent different<br />
parts of Brampton, they<br />
work as one team to serve<br />
the people of the city.<br />
<strong>The</strong>y urged the residents<br />
to reach out to them for<br />
their problems.<br />

July 1 celebrations of<br />
Canada's 150th anniversary,<br />
the barbeque continued<br />
the festivities also<br />
to celebrate the 35th anniversary<br />
of the Charter of<br />

here jointly hosted a reception<br />
for Preeti Saran,<br />
Secretary (East) in the<br />
Ministry of External Affairs<br />
in New Delhi, on her<br />
visit to Canada on July 10.<br />
Preeti, who served<br />
as India’s consul general<br />
in Toronto for five years<br />
from 2008 onwards before<br />
she was appointed India's<br />
ambassador to Vietnam,<br />
was accompanied by<br />
Munu Mahawar, Joint<br />
Secretary (Americas Division)<br />
in the Ministry of<br />
External Affairs.<br />

Indian Consul General<br />
Dinesh Bhatia said<br />
the Indian government<br />
is committed to strengthening<br />
bilateral economic<br />
ties with Canada.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Canadian</strong> <strong>Parvasi</strong><br />
MISSISSAUGA: An elderly Gujarati man from India<br />
visiting his family here was killed in a road accident<br />
on Sunday.<br />
According to police, Harshadrai Patel, 64, who was<br />
visiting his relatives here, was killed when a Toyota<br />
Sienna in which he was travelling with others was hit<br />
by a Jeep Cherokee in the early hours of Sunday.<br />
<strong>The</strong> collision happened in the city’s intersection of<br />
Torbram Road and Reena Road.<br />
Patel was rushed to hospital where he succumbed<br />
to his injuries. Two other persons who were travelling<br />
with Patel suffered injuries.<br />
<strong>The</strong> driver of the Jeep sped away from the scene,<br />
but he lost control of his vehicle and hit a street light<br />
pole at some distance from the scene. He was arrested<br />
when he tried to flee. Police found that he was driving<br />
under the influence of liquor. Some drugs were also<br />
found from his possession.<br />
<strong>The</strong> accused has been identified as Justin Edwin,<br />
26, from Caledon.<br />
He has been slapped with multiple charges, including<br />
causing death due to criminal negligence, excess<br />
blood alcohol, and failing to remain at the scene of the<br />
accident.<br />
Over 200 golfers to<br />
participate in Royal<br />
Punjabi Cup on July 25<br />

MILTON: <strong>The</strong> Punjabi<br />
Golfers Association will<br />
host its annual Royal Punjabi<br />
Cup at the Glencairn<br />
Golf Club on July 25.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Punjabi Golfers<br />
Association has organized<br />
both competitive and recreational<br />
tournaments for<br />
more than a decade with a<br />
view to promoting the game<br />
in the Punjabi community<br />
in the spirit of `seva.’<br />
Thanks to the golfers,<br />
sponsors and its supporters,<br />
the Royal Punjabi Cup<br />
last year raised more than<br />
$50,000 for charities, with<br />
$35,000 going to the Seva<br />
Food Bank in Malton.<br />
With the participation<br />
of over 200 high-profile<br />
golfers, the Royal Punjabi<br />
Cup this year will be even<br />
bigger, with all 27 holes at<br />
the Glencairn Golf Course<br />
in use throughout the day.<br />

2 Brampton Sikh students<br />
achieve rare distinction<br />

BRAMPTON: Two Brampton<br />
Sikh students are among<br />
four Indian-origin graduates<br />
to pass out of Central<br />
Peel Secondary School with<br />
100 percent marks.<br />
Aman Brar and Gurleen<br />
Kaloty, along with Vishvam<br />
Mazumdar and Vishwa<br />
Sheth, have achieved this<br />
rare distinction. <strong>The</strong>y all<br />
will now join the University<br />
of Waterloo for engineering<br />
courses.<br />
While Kaloty will pursue<br />
mechanical engineering,<br />
Brar has opted for computer<br />
engineering.<br />
All the four were together<br />
at Central Peel Secondary<br />
School.<br />
Though friends, they<br />
were very competitive and<br />
took math, computer science,<br />
physics and chemistry<br />
classes together.<br />
"Now that we're heading<br />
to Waterloo, it's just<br />
amazing to see that we'll<br />
be able to be friends for another<br />
five or more years,"<br />
Gurleen told the Brampton<br />
Guardian.<br />
