SUFFIELD
ACADEMY
This classic New England independent school campus offers a
“college like” experience with detached academic buildings wrapping an active
green space quad.
Tecton has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Suffield Academy, having designed new
and re-purposed buildings to support various student functions such as social commons,
dining and career counseling.
Projects include:
Brewster Hall Addition/Renovation - Includes complete updates to the student center,
third floor dorm, kitchen and dining facilities.
New Leadership and Learning Center - Includes three classrooms, four separate seminar rooms,
faculty office space, and apartment living quarters for the academy’s guests.
New Residence Hall - Following a site feasibility study during the preliminary design phase,
the new residence hall was designed to complete the Kotchen Quadrangle, a grouping of
residence halls constructed in the mid-1990s. The design contains 15 double student bedrooms
to accommodate the school’s growing population of boarders.
Tecton is currently designing additional projects in support of the Academy’s master plan.

Since 1993, Tecton Architects has provided campus planning and design
services to the Loomis Chaffee School. In such a competitive academic arena,
every building is part of their marketing campaign. Buildings are planned for a
50+ year lifespan, and the careful attention to Georgian period detailing and
materials such as wood, copper, brick, stone and slate is vital.
Tecton has completed two new residence halls (Kravis and Harman Halls), a
major upgrade of the Clark Science Center, a new admissions building (Sellers
Hall) and a renovated Music and Performing Arts Center. The dormitories feature
contemporary academic and student life amenities. The science center boasts
vastly improved interior space efficiencies allowing for functional growth within
the original building footprint. Hubbard Music & Performing Arts Center provides
a choral rehearsal/ performance hall, a large rehearsal and practice hall, office,
library and storage facilities for the music department.

KINGSWOOD OXFORD SCHOOL
In response to a new master plan, this independent day school located in a residential area, wished to
relocate their middle school program from a remote location and incorporate it into their main campus.
This campus is located in a traditional neighborhood that is characterized by predominantly brick,
deliberately small scale structures, resembling a New England village.
The new facility, which incorporates the original headmaster’s house and the rear façade of the main
administration building, forms an intimate courtyard and was designed to reflect a very inviting
residential character. The brick facade needed to match the modified Flemish bond palate used in the
headmaster’s house to which the new middle school building connects. The color of the brick facade
was chosen for its warmth and ability to mediate between its immediate neighbors to create a cohesive
palette framing the courtyard.

This project was awarded a First Place Historic Preservation Award from the Town of West Hartford for its
careful attention to scale and detail within this gracious West Hartford neighborhood.
