Just a
Thought
By Bob Chute
WOW, we are on the verge of some
very exciting changes in our lives...
First of all, grandchild #7 - Emily
Ruth Lear - will be arriving on
February 13th, being heartily welcomed
by her parents, Kelly and Brad,
sister Mallory, along with brother
William...and assorted grandparents,
aunts, uncles, cousins and friends,
of course!
And, on a lesser note, we are planning
a new look for the next issue of
the Paso Robles Magazine!
Our March 2014 keepsake issue
will sprout a glossy cover, larger
photos and a cleaner updated look
throughout with the beginnings of
our special Historical Paso Robles
section appearing every month in
2014...kicking off in March as the
City of Paso Robles ‘Official’ 125th
Anniversary Publication!
That’s the Quasquicentennial
officially celebrated on March 11...
our own Chuck Desmond has been
keeping you up-to-speed on all the
City activities planned for the year,
along with 125th souvenirs you
just gotta have! Somethin’ like this
doesn’t happen very often!
Exciting stuff, we are so proud to
be recognized for this honor. The
special New Year’s Eve bash kicking
off the Quasqui festivities at the Paso
Robles Inn was outstanding, along
with the glow in the dark games in
the park and the awesome fireworks
display at midnight! Congratulations
Quasqui committee, a job well done!
Back on track, looking at the content
of this issue, we have some interesting
articles for you this month.
First of all, a hearty tip of the
ol’ PRM cap to Randy and Nancy
Flamm for being named Roblans of
the Year. What a special honor for
two very deserving, very involved
Roblans. Read all about ‘em on page
16. Then, follow that up with the special
honor, Beautification of the Year,
bestowed on Mike Rawister for the
amazing transformation he accomplished
at the Paso Robles Golf Club.
If you haven’t seen it yet...go! You’ll
be amazed at the difference.
Rawister and the Flamms were
honored during the Paso Robles
Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner,
‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’ Gala event
held, this year, at the Broken Earth
Winery. It was a fun evening, really a
kick to see everyone all dressed up in
period outfits of the 1920’s!
We also have Chris Weygandt Alba’s
interesting piece on the sea lions
at Piedras Blanca, as the Last Word
on page 51.
There’s so very much more, and
being Valentine’s Day is this month
we have a listing of area Valentine
Celebrations, by Melissa Chavez, on
page 12, along with a special love story
about the 42 year marriage of Jerry
and Gaye Perney who share a love of
music and teaching, by Judy Bedell,
on page 14.
I could wax poetic about this special
time for couples but suffice to
say: Gentlemen, this is where our true
colors can shine....and we need to get
creative. Do I hear an ‘amen’?
Got it guys? Get real about this.
By the time you read this, Rhoda
will be recovering from back surgery
in late January, please keep her in your
prayers. We were married October
28, 2005 and over the years we’ve had
our ups and downs, like every couple,
along with thought-provoking discussions
about our love and the loves with
our deceased spouses that were cut
short by cancers.
We celebrate our ever-evolving life
together and look forward to special
times ahead of us.
Please, fellow Roblans, don’t miss
this opportunity. Treat each day with
loved ones as the special gift it is...but
especially on Valentine’s Day.
So, have you hugged them today?
Do it, please...now.
And again. Good, very good.
Happy Valentine’s Day, Paso Robles!
Want to join the festivities?
If you have a local business and want to be part of the
Paso Robles Magazine very special keepsake March issue,
contact us for advertising information at 805-239-1533 or
email me at bob@pasoroblesmagazine.com...we get RE-
SULTS for your hard earned dollars! Skeptical? I encourage
you to ask any of our advertisers!
Don’t hesitate...our deadline for March is just around the
corner, on Friday, February 7.
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and we have an
incredible evening of amazing food, music, and dancing sure
to impress your sweetie.
This year’s festivities will transport you back to the days of supper
club dining. Enjoy the romantic surroundings of Hunter Ranch
Golf Course while listening to the soulful sounds of Chad Stevens,
Brett Mitchell, and friends. Their band will be serenading you with
all the classic tunes from the Great American Song Book, while
enjoying a 5 course dinner by candlelight.
Longtime Paso Robles musicians and
music educators Jerry and Gaye Perney
credit music with bringing them together.
While many couples have a special song that
symbolizes their relationship, the Perney’s
whole relationship is a love song. A musicinspired
life that has truly been a blessing.
So the love song begins when Gaye
moved to the area in search of work as a
music teacher.
“Jerry was already here, and before I was
hired, the superintendent asked him to give
me a tour of the San Luis Obispo music
program so I could see some of the things
going on and then that fall I was hired in
Paso Robles and we started working together,”
explained Gaye.
“We shared an office and I was hired to
teach a string program while Jerry continued
with the band,” said Gaye.
There was a twinkle in Jerry’s eye as he
recalled how lucky he was to share that office
even though they argued all the time at
first because Gaye was “a string person” and
Jerry was “a band person.”
“We would fight over which program
was more important but then decided to
settle it by getting married,” recalls Gaye
with smile.
Jerry began teaching in
Paso Robles in 1960 and
Gaye in 1965. They were
married December 19,
1971 and the love song
picked up the tempo. Jerry
was teaching elementary
and junior high music
and Gaye was hired as
an additional elementary
music teacher. Those were
the good old days when
music was part of the curriculum and all
students received the benefits that only music
can provide.
Known affectionately by many students,
teachers and parents as “The Band Man”
and “The Music Lady,” they have touched
thousands of lives. Even while doing our
interview, a former student stopped by to
say hi! Dennis Toevs had learned how to
play tuba from Jerry and Dennis’ son, Phillip,
went on to learn music and be a part of
the Bearcat Band through Jerry’s work with
Paso Robles Schools.
“I am loving Facebook,” said
Gaye. “It has been a great way
to reconnect with students and
stay in touch with others. I love
hearing what the students remember
most. And recently
one of my former 3rd grade
students, who is now a parent
himself, contacted me and he
is starting cello lessons. He was
kind of embarrassed that he had
forgotten how to read music but
it will come back.”
And there are a lot of students
to stay in touch with since Jerry
taught music for 50 years and
Gaye for 37.
Steve, Garrett and Julie were Jerry’s children
coming into the marriage and later
Nanette and Joanna joined the musical
troupe. Now the proud grandparents of 6
and the great grandparents of 5, they are
known around the house as GG Jerry and
GG Gaye.
Not content to just
teach music to others,
Jerry and Gaye continued
to play on their
own as well as teach.
Jerry has played in
several small combos
as well as playing at
the Madonna Inn, in
the Atascadero Community
Band and has
been a regular at Vine
Street Showcase for many years.
Jerry also believed so strongly in music
education that he taught classes through
Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz County for
other teachers to bring music into their
classroom. Teaching autoharp and recorders
and song, he helped many Paso Robles
teachers capitalize on the effects that music
Gaye and Jerry on their wedding day
December 19, 1971.
By Judy Bedell
Jerry Perney has played
with numerous bands
and musical groups
throughout the county
and is seen here entertaining
the crowds at
Vine Street 2012.
Musicians and educators, Gaye and Jerry
Perney are a real-life love song.
has on learning. He also went on to teach
early childhood music education through
Cuesta College.
Gaye played with the San
Luis Symphony and the Pioneer
Players Orchestra before
her duties as mother took over
her time. She continues to play
with the San Luis Chamber
Orchestra and the New World
Baroque Orchestra. Cello is her
instrument of choice and she
also offers lessons to those who
want to learn the craft.
Jerry and Gaye continue to
give back through music by overseeing
the Bell Choir and String
classes at the Shandon Methodist
Church.
Also, they are both very active
in CalRTA the California Retired Teachers
Association.
When asked about playing music together
they both laugh. Jerry plays jazz, piano,
brass instruments and traditional band
tunes while Gaye specializes in strings and
classical music.
“They don’t really cross over,” explained
Gaye.
“That’s probably what keeps us together
is we have a shared interest but our own
approach. I can’t think of a rough spot so
tough we couldn’t get across.”
Jerry summed up their love song this way,
“We have a love of music; a love of each
other; a love of teaching and a love of the
church. Can you imagine what a great life it
is when every day we have those things?
“How many teachers get to spend most of
their working life with the person they love,
teaching what they love? It is truly a blessing.
“And then we retired, and we still get to
continue doing the same thing.”
For Jerry and Gaye Perney the love song
is still being written and played every day.
Their commitment to each other and to
music education is something to behold.
By Millie Drum
Once the employees of IQMS learned that they
could sign the letter nominating their employers
and owners of the company, Randy and Nancy
Flamm, for the Chamber of Commerce Roblan
of the Year, the line from the lobby’s front desk
went out the door! With the recent announcement,
the Flamms were overwhelmed with the
honor especially since it came from the extraordinary
support from their employees. Randy says,
“We were very humbled by the announcement. It’s
amazing. We’ve been very blessed with the huge
success of our company and our people. We’re in a
very large industry. We’re big for around here, but
comparatively, we are very small. We love what we
do and we have literally hundreds of people trying
to purchase IQMS every year. We want to see how
big we can become and part of that is giving back.
We’re very profitable which makes it easy to give
back to the community.
“Our main focus is education and giving our local
kids the ability to be productive in their lives. Nancy
and I believe that what our country needs for the future
starts with the kids. That’s why we are so happy
to support the youth in FFA, 4-H and Skills USA.
We love to hire them as they come off the farm or
ranch because they understand the work ethic.”
IQMS began like many other large high-tech
companies. “Nancy and I met in the Bay Area
while working for the same company in the late
70s when micro computers were just coming out.
We built the software to make our jobs easier in the
manufacturing realm.
“In 1978, I belonged to the Homebrew Computer
Club where Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak
got their start. Obviously, they did quite a bit better
than I did! Back then, I was using micro computers
to monitor industrial equipment.”
While working for General Electric, a conversation
over dinner with clients who were dealing with
similar problems in their manufacturing company
prompted the eventual creation of IQMS. Randy
recalls telling them, “I wrote the software that was
so great that we’d take long lunches while the software
did the work! They said, “Why don’t you write
that software for us? I was very happy at GE and
politely declined, but they kept after me. I agreed
ooh-la-la!
valentine’s day is friday, february 14
to write software for
them, but sell it too.
Nancy and I began
that project parttime
in August 1988
while we were still working. The word got around so
we quit our jobs in 1989, got a second mortgage on
the house and started IQMS in our living room.
“We struggled for a while but quickly figured
out that we could live anywhere. Nancy didn’t care
for the Los Angeles area and didn’t want to move
back to the Bay Area, so we picked somewhere in
between.” In the early 80s, a business trip brought
Randy to Paso. He adds, “We had breakfast at Vic’s
Café and I said ‘This is a wonderful place! We were
in suits and ties!’ Larry Eastwood is a great guy! We
settled here in 1993 and bought a small ranch near
Lake Nacimiento. Our first office was off Vendels
Circle with only a handful of us. Now we have 120
employees here, so we’ve grown up in Paso.
“Since 2009 we’ve enjoyed a high growth rate;
in fact we’ve over doubled in size.” IQMS provides
Enterprise Resource Planning or ERP for manufacturing
companies with software for every function
from quality control, inventory, time clocks,
scheduling, payroll and general ledger. Flamm
adds, “Our main clientele is automotive parts and
medical device companies. The majority of our customers
are in the United States. We have offices
in China, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Canada,
Mexico City, the Chicago area and expanding to
the Charlotte, North Carolina area.”
Randy and Nancy enjoy their success and personal
endeavors with such a genuine spirit and a wonderful
sense of humor! To further support FFA and
4-H, the Flamms participate in the Mid-State Fair
livestock auction and invite their employees to bring
their coolers to work and load up their freezers with
fresh meat. Randy smiles and
says, “It stimulates freezer sales
too! We also allow the employees
who don’t have an agricultural
background to feed our
bulls!” Since the Flamms also
run a cattle operation with
their ranches near the lake and
Cambria, the bulls spend their
off time on acreage adjacent to
IQMS. The employees enjoy an outdoor break in the
pasture and the bulls appreciate the special attention...especially
a carrot now and then! Randy adds,
“The cow and calf operation has been my hobby for
the last 20 years. Nancy’s latest hobby is the Cambria
Pub and Steakhouse. She’s doing very well.” Naturally,
Nancy uses all IQMS software for the back end
operation of the restaurant.
When the call for service arises, the employees
of IQMS also eagerly pitch in with volunteer
hours or donations to local charities and nonprofit
organizations to include AYSO, North
County Women’s Shelter, Food Bank of SLO,
Woods Humane Society, United Way and Toys
for Tots. Fundraising events for walkers, runners
and cyclists are popular; fostering the IQMS
team spirit. Several employees serve on the
Board of Directors of Skills USA and Softec.
Marketing Director Daniele Fresca proposed the
Adopt-a-Park program to Randy. She adds, “Of
course, Randy said ‘Go Big or Go Home! Let’s do
the Downtown City Park!’ With between 5 to 15
employee volunteers every other week, we pick up
trash and report any repairs.” Randy adds, “We get
paid back too. It’s such a feel good thing.”
Through their kindness and generosity, Randy
and Nancy Flamm are setting the example for our
youth, the IQMS employees and the community
at large by embracing a very simple, yet profound
belief. In Randy’s own words, “Instead of what can
I take; it should be what can I give?”
Thank you, Randy and Nancy for such a remarkable
commitment to our community!
The Beautification Award goes to
The Paso Robles Golf Club
By Millie Drum
Roblans Randy and Nancy Flamm
and Mike Rawister share the same
fundamental philosophy. They’re able
to make a great contribution to the
community and take a pride in doing
so with grace and humility. While the
community has supported the Paso
Robles Golf Club over the years, the
facility has been a “diamond in the
rough” for a very long time. With a
vision and the insight to surround
himself with the finest professionals
in construction and design, Mike
Rawister has created not only an attraction
for the locals; the club is becoming
a destination for golfers and
visitors traveling to the Central Coast.
With the announcement of the
award, Mike says, “We were very excited
about it! After over two years of
renovation, it’s nice to be recognized
especially since there are many other
worthy projects as well, so we are very
honored. The ‘finish’ was the most enjoyable
and thrilling to see the creation
of a place that is aesthetically pleasing
and observe the community’s response
that usually started with ‘Wow!’ We
had a good team to include Superintendant
Doug Westbrook, Contractor
Dave Ormonde and my daughter
Lainey Stroud. She’s been just phenomenal
because we’ve worked together
on other projects so she knows
the game plan. And it’s been fun to
have my grandkids at the club as
well. My wife has been great too since
she ‘hasn’t seen much of me’ for a
couple of years. It’s truly been a great
experience for the whole family.”
Lainey adds, “The announcement
was a very pleasant surprise. Through
the whole transformation, the most
exciting part was to see the entire
site come alive with a fresh look. The
renovation of the Club Room (banquet
room) was the most satisfying
because it was the last phase. From the
beginning, we wanted a comfortable
and inviting environment. We wanted
rustic, without going over the top. The
redwood siding, slate stone accents
and galvanized roofing set the stage
for that feel. The colors in the slate,
variations of cool grays and warm
browns, are carried throughout the
buildings in floors, walls, furnishings
and fixtures.” The innovative use of
the rustic room dividers give the large
room a dual function by creating intimate
dining areas or rolling them
aside for large groups. The wall of
windows and entrance to the veranda
expands the appeal of the beautiful
weather and views of the golf course.
Paso Robles Golf Club owner
Mike Rawister with his daughter,
Lainey Stroud.
For Lainey, working with her dad
on the latest business venture parallels
how Mike Rawitser approaches
his life. “My dad has vast knowledge
of the golf business, but the most
valuable lessons I have learned from
him apply to life. He is a man of
integrity. He is extremely honest,
passionate about principle and enjoys
helping others. He may have
created the word ‘thorough.’ My
dad is a visionary with the ability
to see the potential in projects and,
more importantly, people. He applies
these principles to business and
THE CUSTOMER which is why
he has been so successful. And really,
what could be more important?”
EDUCATION & YOUTH
By Meagan Friberg
Students at Georgia Brown Elementary School
are gaining knowledge on nutrition and fitness
thanks to a group of volunteers and community
activists spearheaded by Laura Herzberg, a
pediatrician with Community Health Centers.
What started as an art and nutrition idea has
blossomed into what organizers hope will be an
annual event for all schools in the district.
“This started as a little idea of mine to teach
kids about nutrition and to get some posters for
my office for teaching about obesity,” Herzberg
said. “Then, I thought, it would be nice to bring
this out to all the schools in the district as
a nutrition and art project.”
Hoping to gain momentum and support,
Dr. Herzberg presented her idea to Georgia
Brown Elementary Principal Ellalina Emrich
Keller and was overwhelmed by her response.
“She said ‘This needs to be much bigger
– a month-long nutrition curriculum,” Herzberg
said.
From the two dynamos’ brainstorming session
through the completion of last year’s inaugural
program, Herzberg was “totally impressed” as
volunteers responded with excitement, embraced
the idea and became involved. Herzberg and
Keller continually receive positive feedback for
their efforts from students and parents alike.
“They especially like the take home recipe,”
Herzberg said, referring to an in-class portion
of the curriculum, “and the kids love the cooking
portion – many are still eating vegetables!”
Any program that combines kids’ artwork
with getting them to like vegetables has to be a
winner, right?
It sure seems that way and, with support from
a gaggle of volunteers, Herzberg and her team are
repeating the month-long curriculum through
the end of February. Sponsored in part by the
UC CalFresh Nutrition Education Program,
it kicked off January 21 with initial lessons and
presentations.
Gregg Wangard, head chef at Marisol at The
Cliffs, returned to prepare a fresh-cooked lunch
for the students, staff and volunteers – 600 in all
– on January 28 with assistance from his wife,
Kelly Wangard, executive chef and manager at
Summerwood Winery & Inn. Cal Poly studentathletes
chatted with students before heading out
to the playground for a bit of physical activity.
NOW OPEN!
CalFresh representatives gave a presentation
to parents on January 29 and introduced a free
cooking class to run concurrently with the students’
program. Chef Rod Blackner, Paso Robles
Food Service and Culinary Arts Academy Director,
conducted a brief seminar and offered training
for parents involved with classroom cooking
demonstrations. He brought offerings from a
full salad bar – a crowd favorite, Keller said.
Various community partners were on hand to
answer questions and offer assistance.
A week-long food group curriculum, based on
the USDA One Great Plate model, will feature a
butternut squash soup recipe. Students will take
home the recipe and a bag of ingredients so they
may cook at home with their family.
“It empowers children when they take their skills
and cook at home – it becomes a family tradition,”
Keller said, adding that all produce for demonstrations,
class lessons, and take-home ingredients was
donated by local farmers. “We have amazing family
and community support that allows us to do this.”
New this year – activities presented by Kennedy
Club Fitness and video documentation courtesy of
the Paso High video production class; donations
are needed to purchase pedometers for 3-5 grade
classrooms. Additional community supporters
include: CHC, the Food Bank, and the Georgia
Brown PTSA.
As for the art portion, many Georgia Brown
students, including Dr. Herzberg’s two boys, are
patients in her office; she said they delight in seeing
their posters adorn the pediatric clinic walls. The
winning class of the poster contest will be treated
to a pizza party – Blackner will return to help
students prepare pizzas using fresh ingredients.
“This is an ambitious project, but it has been
extremely gratifying,” said Herzberg. “I have been
totally overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of volunteers
and donors and the community support.”
Paso Robles’ 125th Anniversary Celebration
To honor and preserve the history of Paso Robles for future generations
We are the City of
Paso Robles “Official”
Commemorative Edition
Let’s Create the Greatest Happy Anniversary Card to Paso
The City we call home, will officially become 125 years old on
March 11, 2014. It’ll be the grandest day we have to remind all
35,000 neighbors of our remarkable and enduring history...and
your Paso Robles Magazine will commemorate this special
occasion with a switch to glossy paper for the March edition!
We own businesses, we belong to service organizations and we
earn our livings in the readership area of Paso Robles Magazine.
For our 155th publication...the March issue---it would be
absolutely fabulous if each of you changed your advertising
a bit to say Happy Anniversary and Thanks for being a part
of El Paso de Robles. Express it in a way that is special and
dear to you. Instead of the traditional promotion of your
products and services, we’d like to make this a true Paso
Happy Anniversary Wishes issue. Most likely it will become
somewhat of a collector’s issue as well.
Some thoughts for what might fit the bill:
Highlight your business or organization’s history in town.
How far back do the roots of your establishment go? How
many generations deep is your business? Why are you in
business here? What has Paso meant to your way of life
with your business? How has your business life transcended
into personal and family relationships? How would you
like to say “Happy Anniversary Paso!” How would you
like to say “Thank You Paso” for the opportunities you
found here?
For our part, Paso Robles Magazine is planning its first-ever
glossy cover in March and we’ll include an historical section
within that issue and run historical info about our great
community throughout 2014! This is nothing short of being
a labor of love. PRM is as much a part of our way of life as
is each of your businesses. To make a great issue and allow
each of you to express your love of Paso, we are getting
started right away. Your ad reps and I will meet with you to
explore all your thoughts. Even if you’ve never run an ad in
the PRM, you might want to use this opportunity to be part
of this Happy Anniversary card to our community...and be
able to take advantage of our 100% mailed coverage as
well...we get results for our advertisers!
PASO PEOPLE
Jim’s Locomotive Obsession
Keeping us Safe: 9-1-1 and Emergency Services
Call Center is updated and fully operational
By Chuck Desmond
As Paso’s population expanded, so
did the need for an upgraded protection
support service. Cutting straight
to the heart of translating that into
an-easy-to-understand statement,
just simply think 9-1-1 response time.
We rely on this security blanket without
thinking too much about how it
works. We just “know it’s there and hope
we don’t have to use it.”
Under Chief Robert Burton, the new
center now occupies a newly renovated
area on the top floor of the Police Department
- just 50 feet down the hall
from his office. In a room of approximately
500 sq. ft, it is a full 1/3 larger in
every aspect. Let’s look at some of the
specifics and see what they mean for us
as residents of El Paso de Robles.
With a penchant for our safety as the
#1 priority of Chief Burton’s job, the
PD simultaneously took on two interrelated
tasks:
#1 was to find an experienced person to run
this uber-critical function for the city.
#2 was to improve the facility itself to better
handle the volume of calls and improve response
times. Both were accomplished last Fall
and all cylinders are firing perfectly.
An area was redone to accommodate a
third call person (from two that it previously
housed) and the center was moved from the
ground floor to a much-expanded space that
provides for a bit of elbow room. Each of the
three independent stations has eight monitors
so each dispatcher has their eyes on several
things at once.
Through a posting and a job search, Mary
Sponhaltz was recruited from the Morro
Bay Police Department to be the supervisor.
She was raised in Fresno and attended Fresno
State where she received her BA degree.
Mary and her husband moved to Paso in 2001
but for Mary, it was a loooonnng commute to
and from Paso every day. For almost thirteen
years, Morro Bay was her work-home.
Applying for the position and landing the job
relieved that commute and allows Mary to
“live and work in her town.”
Mary’s official title is Administrative Assistant
to Chief Burton and Dispatch Supervisor,
reporting to Lt. Ty Lewis, who is in charge of
the detectives and dispatch. Somehow, Mary
is the right-hand for both men. She began
her new position at the end of August - just
in time to learn a few names and execute the
move to the new location.
Paso now has 33 sworn officers, and two K-
9 dogs. Backing them up are seven full-time
9-1-1 operators and two part-time employees
reporting to Mary. All of them are women
and all live in Paso. They are vested in the
community, seasoned pros who comprise
a tight-knit team and have been
at their posts for many years. They
work four 10-hour shifts which gives
them enough time off to always be
fresh and alert which is exactly what
we want when we need their help.
In a heartbeat, the team members can
sort out an incoming call and deploy
the Emergency Services Team (Fire
Department) or the police. A slug of
routine calls (not 9-1-1 variety) also
come to them so they direct the request
or situation to the right department.
But, make no mistake, anything
that threatens life or property is
tops on the list. And, the list is
long! On average, it is just short of
100 calls per day that require “rightnow
intervention and action.”
To explain a bit more, here’s what
happens when someone dials 9-1-1.
If the call is made from a land-line in
the city, the operators can tell exactly
where the call originated. That’s important
if the caller was unable to speak or give
the location. That same emergency call made
on a cell-phone, however, doesn’t provide
a physical location of the call’s origin. Cellphone
9-1-1 calls go to the CHP which then
dispatches whatever is necessary. This could
mean the CHP calls the fire or the police
departments and that time lost could make
a difference. This alone is an excellent reason
to hang on to the land line. Outside the city
limits, land-line phone calls go to the Sheriff ’s
Department, which then dispatches whatever
is needed based on the caller’s location.
With 30,000 local residents and an army of
visitors and tourists every day this is fertile soil
for every kind of emergency one could imagine.
If, and only if, you need immediate help, call
9-1-1. For routine business, call 237-6464. It’s
a great team that is there to assist.
The Namesake discussion
The public is invited to join
the discussion of Jhumpa Lahiri’s
The Namesake, on Thursday,
Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. in the Library
conference room.
The Namesake takes the Ganguli
family from their traditionbound
life in Calcutta through
their fraught transformation into
Americans. Named for a Russian
writer by his Indian parents in
memory of a catastrophe years
before, Gogol Ganguli knows
only that he suffers the burden
of his heritage as well as his odd,
antic name.
Lahiri brings great empathy to
Gogol as he stumbles
along the firstgeneration
path,
strewn with conflicting
loyalties,
comic detours, and
wrenching love affairs.
With penetrating
insight, Lahiri reveals
not only the defining power of
the names and expectations bestowed
upon us by our parents,
but also the means by which
we slowly, sometimes painfully,
come to define ourselves. The
Namesake is a fine-tuned, intimate,
and deeply felt novel of
identity.
Lillian Larsen Buzz Marathon 2014 set for Feb. 15
San Miguel
Reflections
By Lynne Schmitz
The fourteenth annual Lillian
Larsen School BUZZ Marathon
will be held on Saturday, February
15 on the Camp Roberts
Army National Guard Reservation
in a long-standing partnership
with the San Miguel School
District. Beginning times for the
marathon and half-marathon are
at 8:30 a.m., walkers at 6:30 a.m.,
the 5K at 8:45 a.m. and childrenunder-12
mile run at 9:30 a.m.
This is a great meditative run
through hills and meadows of the
Salinas River Valley. The course
starts at 750’, rising gently to
1250’ going out and back. There
are wildlife spectators, spectacular
views, training research sites
and porta-potties every 2 miles.
Volunteers do all the work.
Packets will be available for
pickup between 3 and 6 p.m. the
day before the race at the school
gym at 1601 L Street. Packets
may be picked up the day of the
race from 6:30 a.m. until 10 minutes
before starting at the Camp
Roberts gym. Camp Roberts is
two miles north of San Miguel
on Highway 101. Be sure to have
personal identifications and current
license and insurance papers
for vehicles.
The name of the race is derived
from the Lillian Larsen Hornets
who benefit from proceeds of
the race. It funds the school athletic
programs, which students
would not have otherwise. This
year new volleyball jerseys are
included on the list. In 2012-
13, sport expenses totaled nearly
$11,000, with approximately
$800 paid out-of-pocket. Lillian
Larsen School is a small school
with a big heart and a history of
talented and dedicated teachers
and students.
Testing District Coordinator
who will administer and create
state, parent and board reports,
and test Lillian Larsen
and Cappy Culver students
with emphasis on grades 5 and
7. Eileen’s extra duties include
Director/Coordinator of the
BUZZ Marathon, serving on the
LEAP Advisory Board and serving
as a “go-to” person for pretty
much anything at the school that
no one else knows ‘who, what,
which, when, why or how’.
Professional responsibilities
outside of school include President
of the local county unit of
the California Association for
Health, Physical Education, Recreation
and Dance (CAHPERD),
committee member and past director
of the Cal Poly Elementary
Physical Education Workshop
(EPEW), Executive Board member
of the Council on Physical
Education for Children (CPEC),
Consultant/Mentor for AACA,
Grizzly Academy Mentor/Consultant,
Physical Best Certified
and Trainer of Trainers for the
National American Association
for Health, Physical Education,
Recreation and Dance (AAH-
PERD) convention and member
of the National Association for
Sports and Physical Education.
Eileen was named Teacher of
the Year by the state (2011), the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints, Paso Robles Ward
(2006), and San Miguel School
District (1986-87). Other honors
include CAHPERD Health
Educator of the year (2011),
California Governor’s Council
on Fitness and Sport Teacher of
the Year Bronze Medalist (2010),
HEAL SLO Mentor Program
of the Year (2010), and SLO
County Woman of the Year Distinction
in Education (1994).
The San Miguel district has
been fortunate to have teachers
of Eileen’s caliber on their staff.
The inspiration, work ethic and
energy received in the early years
will propel them through higher
education and into their working
lives. Eileen will be retiring from
San Miguel School next year but
will still be very busy even if she’s
not in a classroom. Her influence
has been felt beyond San Miguel
and legions of grateful students
are thankful.
ROUND TOWN
County Perspective
Climate Calamity: “Call it obsession,
call it fanatical...” goes Jars of rural Paso Robles businesses and
San Luis Obispo Supervisors and By Bruce Curtis
Clay’s Coffee Song, but our friends residents must also have pondered
probably call ours, addiction. They what the environment would throw
know my wife and I cherish our together
time over that magic ebony
beverage, perhaps a little too much.
Sadly though, we were too late.
When the coffee chain from the city
named for a Duwamish chief offered
free java for the month with purchase
of a branded travel mug, they sold out
right away. We hesitated too long.
at them next as they met to discuss
whether to create a water district, and
whether it would do any good.
Paso Robles, like most of the Salinas
Valley, continue to bake under
droughtful skies; rainfall has been
almost nonexistent as California
chalked up the driest year on record.
San Luis Obispo County joins
hundred or so who met at Pear Valley
Winery, January 7th to walk through
the steps. Formation would take about
a year, if all parties work together, to
form a water district, they were told.
Ever wonder how government
grows? Locally, it usually takes place
under the auspices of LAFCO, the
Local Agency Formation Commission,
No fears, my frugal wife scored Monterey and Santa Barbara counties
but a water district is something
two on Ebay, for less than the coffee
now in federally-classified “ex-
a bit more complex. Only been one
store was charging. Fifty bucks for treme” drought.
new water district formed in the past
the pair, so by January 12th, we were
in the black, so to speak. Fanatical?
Probably.
The Central Coast basked while
The record comes as no surprise
to Salinas Valley wineries and Hwy
46 corridor residents, many of whom
have had to drill new wells, sometimes
two decades, so legislation is also
needed.
35th District Assemblyman Katcho
Achadjian has said he’d front an
twice.
January snow and ice closed the
appropriate bill, if and when everyone
eastern US. Great Lakes and east Stakeholders all agree action is agrees they want one. That means
coast residents hunkered inside, far
from roads, knowing skating favors
boots and blades, not Mustangs and
minivans.
At the same time, Argentina and
needed, even if they don’t agree on
all the details. What should be done
first? A water district seems to be the
answer. Emergency county ordinances
are only a stopgap, most say. Such
having the Board of Supervisors, on
board, as well.
Quid Pro Quart? A drop here,
a quart there, water savings can add
up, if everyone works at it. Saccharine
Australia sweltered in record heat, a district is the permanent, sensible
platitude? Probably, but it sums
naturally out came the armchair
quarterbacks on both sides about
global warming.
water diet strategy.
How do you create one? Residents,
growers and officials were among the
what the board of supervisors is doing,
near term, to manage meager
groundwater reserves.
When board members leisurely
ambled back into supervisor’s chambers
with renewed vigor for the new
year on January 14th, they hoped to
put into motion an irrigated agriculture
offset program. While the
name is fancy, goal is simple: create
a system of water credits that allows
farmers to change what they grow
without a net increase in water use,
sustainability.
For rural residents, efficiency is
also the goal, so education will be a
big part of the ag offset program.
The game plan is to have the draft
offset plan finished by March 15,
with final passage of the plan done by
October. That is the hope, but then
some of us hope for a big lottery win.
Panga Pain: One of the most
amusing, if not edifying stories of
2013 has to be the number of light
skiffs bearing drugs hitting the beaches;
more than a dozen, from Montana
de Oro to San Simeon. Drug runners
seem to have found a less obtrusive
way to bring illicit drugs ashore, as
border agents get better at busting
ne’er do wells at the border. More
than two dozen suspects are in custody,
some after their van went over a
cliff, miraculously without injuries.
ROUND TOWN
The Big Laugh!
America’s Funniest Valentine
Saturday February 15 th
By Millie Drum
Local comedian and Big Laugh
producer Lizette Mizelle is planning
two Big events...a Valentine’s
comedy show and her fabulous summer
wedding to Dave Belmonte.
Knowing Lizette, each of them
will be an occasion to remember
with her unmistakable flair for
entertaining a crowd! “I found there
are three things in common between
The Big Laugh and my wedding,”
said Lizette. “It’s very expensive.
I have to entertain hundreds of
people. And I hope when I appear,
I don’t pass out!”
Being the show’s producer is just
one facet of this talented gal! As a
comic herself, Lizette has opened
for Jon Lovitz, Dana Carvey and
internet sensation Mrs. Hughes. Her
team of friends turned production
crew mean the world to her. She
adds, “I love reflecting on the Red
Carpet photos taken by our photographer
Chris Hangos. He really
captures the energy and excitement
from every show!
“We have the World’s Funniest
Cop, Mike Mancini, headlining the
show! Thankfully I BOOKED him.
He didn’t book me!” Mike’s been in
comedy for 25 years and only 12 as
a cop! Mark Eddie is a true Comedy
Rocker with his song parodies
of Al Green, Bruce Springsteen, Van
Morrison and his retrospective of
rock and roll history. After watching
Mark, now I sing Neil Diamond as
a 3rd grade teacher. ‘I am. I said.’ is
now a version by Dr. Seuss...’I Am
SAM...and I want you to eat those
green eggs and ham!’ Stephanie
Blum is one of my favorite comedy
Mamas. She has three children and
so do I. We can so relate to that kind
of motherhood and our sarcastic and
often irreverent comic relief!”
The doors of the Atascadero
Lake Pavilion open at 7 p.m., the
show starts at 8 p.m., $30 for online
advance tickets, and $35 at the door.
PERSPECTIVE from page 34
The light, skinny skiffs, known as
Panga boats, were made to move fast
on small outboard motors. The idea
behind the UN economic endeavor
was to help fishermen and small businesses
in developing countries, and in
a twist of irony, the boats did exactly
that, becoming the vessels of choice
for Somali pirates and Mexican drug
runners.
In late December, one boat slipped
ashore near San Simeon, stuffed to the
gills with hallucinogenic substances
like some Timothy Leary-esque
Santa’s sleigh. Apparently something
spooked the crew because they left a
portion of Aunt Mary behind.
Crisp Coast: Normally it’s rare
for wildfires to strike the Big Sur
coastline, because fog and moisture
generally keep things just a big
greener. Most fires stay in remote
eastern areas. But in late December
though, a coastal wildfire torched 36
homes, including one owned by Martha
Karsten, Big Sur Volunteer Fire
Brigade’s own Chief.
The Pfeiffer Fire burned for five
days, blackening more than 900 acres
of mostly private land. The cause is yet
undetermined, but the blaze is known
to have started somewhere in the Los
Padres National Forest.
Sunny but Homeless: Dry
warm winter weather has spared the
county’s growing homeless population.
No gloating though; a new
Housing and Urban Development
report says 90% of our local homeless
sleep unsheltered. The annual Home-
less Assessment Report heralds San
Luis Obispo County with the dubious
rank of third in the nation among
smaller cities whose homeless sleep
outdoors.
Only two places have a higher percent
of unsheltered homeless and both
are in semi-tropical Florida. Grouped
with larger cities, San Luis Obispo
County has the highest percentage of
unsheltered homeless in the nation,
according to the HUD report.
It’s a problem that all the free coffee
in the world won’t help.
What’s happening on Main Street?
By Chris
Weygandt Alba
Hardship sometimes
brings out the
best in families, as
downtown hair stylist
Gigi Cohoon can attest. Gigi has
been a member of the Downtown
Paso Robles Main Street family for
a quarter of a century.
Unable to work since she was
diagnosed with breast cancer in
November, Gigi has witnessed miracles
of compassion this winter.
“For 25 years I’ve been grounded
downtown,” Gigi says as she styles
her hair at her salon,
Gigi’s Hair Fantasia
at 1211 Park St., before
starting chemotherapy
on Dec. 30.
“I’ve watched people’s
children grow up
here. My own children
grew up here.
Now the community
is giving back to me
more than I could
ever have imagined.
“Every customer is
praying for me,” Gigi
MIRACLE ON PARK STREET
Her downtown “family” has
blessed hair stylist Gigi
Cohoon as she battles cancer.
adds. “Downtown
comes by to check on
me and give me all the love I can
handle, hugging me and promising
all will be well.
“My property owners have forgiven
my rent for November and
December, and they’ve worked
out a wonderful proposal for the
next few months with my property
manager, Newlin Hastings, as I
recover from cancer. John and Paul
Lamas told me, ‘Don’t worry about
it now. This is your spot. This is
where you belong. Just work on your
health now.’”
Gigi’s oncologist has told her
that she can plan on working parttime
after two or three months of
treatment and going full-time again
in May. As she curls her bangs before
chemo probably makes her
bald for a time, Gigi says, “He held
my hands and said, ‘No one has
ever had to take care of you. Now,
let people take care of you. You’re a
strong woman and you’ll beat this.’”
A customer stops by with a plate
of cookies, which delights Gigi, and
she’s been blessed by others who
have provided financial help as
well. She ticks them off her fingers:
Lance and Claire Silver of Tobin
James, Newlin Hastings
and the Lamas brothers,
Cathy Damigos of Paso
Robles Glass, Mary and
Richard Blizzard, David
Barker, Hadi and
Charolette Zalzalah...
“And my mom, my
son Jason and daughter
Heather are taking care
of me,” Gigi says with a
shimmering smile. “My
son said, ‘Remember
how you used to rock
me to sleep every night?
Now I’m rocking you.”
Vintage film returns to downtown’s
Park Cinemas with The Quiet Man, a
1952 award-winning Irish whimsy
starring John Wayne and Maureen
O’Hara, for Main Street’s Valentine
Movie Night on Sunday, Feb. 16.
The Quiet Man was a zenith in
the career of director John Ford, for
whom it was an obvious labor of
love. Nominated for seven Academy
Awards, The Quiet Man earned an
Oscar for Ford and for cinematographer
Winton Hoch’s lush photography
of the Irish countryside.
Presenting the Irish culture from
the point of view of an Irish descendant
reclaiming his
heritage, The Quiet Man
also swept top honors
from the Directors Guild
of America, the National
Board of Review, and
the Venice Film Festival.
The Writers Guild of
America saluted it as the
best American comedy of
1952, with its screenplay
by Frank S. Nugent based
on a 1933 Saturday Evening
Post short story by
Maurice Walsh.
The film was a something
of a quirk for Wayne and
Ford, both known mostly for
Westerns. John Wayne plays Sean
Thornton, a 1920s American
heavyweight boxer who, after
accidentally killing an opponent in
the ring, has hung up his gloves,
vowing never to fight again. He
has come from America to Ireland
to reclaim his family’s farm and
escape his past.
Sean’s eye is caught by Mary
Kate Danaher (Maureen O’Hara),
a beautiful but poor maiden and
younger sister of bullying, loudmouthed
landowner “Red” Will
Danaher. The riotous relationship
that forms between Sean and fiery
Mary Kate, punctuated by Will’s
pugnacious attempts to keep them
apart and deprive Mary Kate of
her dowry, form the main plot,
with Sean’s past as the dark undercurrent.
Trivia moment: During the
scene when John Wayne first kisses
Maureen O’Hara, she slaps his face.
When he blocked the blow, she
broke a bone in her hand. Since
the movie was being filmed in
sequential order, she couldn’t wear a
cast to fix the broken bone.
VINTAGE VALENTINE MOVIE NIGHT brings
The Quiet Man with John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara
to Park Cinemas on Sunday, Feb. 16.
Be your best
at every age
You’ll love sitting in the theater’s
stadium seats as these timeless
actors jab each other with such
lines as “He’ll regret it to his dying
day, if ever he lives that long” and
“Is that a bed, or a parade ground?
A man would have to be a sprinter
to catch his wife in a bed like that.”
Showtime is at 7 p.m. on Feb.
16, and seating is limited. Advance
tickets are highly recommended
because Main Street’s classic-film
nights are popular (plan to arrive
well before showtime to claim a
good seat). The $12 ticket price
includes your choice of champagne
and chocolate or popcorn
and soda.
And it’s for a good cause: Valentine
Movie Night, sponsored by
Park Cinemas, is a fundraiser for the
non-profit Main Street program’s
downtown events.
Tickets are available now at the
Main Street office, 835 12th St.
(around back in the alley), or call
the office (238-4103) to use a credit
card. Last-minute tickets might be
available at the theater entrance
outside before the show.
BUSINESS
The Central
Coast’s most
prominent marketing and
tourism agency, Visit San Luis
Obispo County, has relocated
their office to Paso Robles, according
to Executive Director
Stacie Jacob, “We simply
found that more and more of
our employees are based in the
North County. We are a marketing
agency for all SLO County
tourism, and with new virtual
technology we are able to perform
our marketing functions
from pretty much anywhere.
Additionally, our new location
allows us to be situated in the
heart of our award winning
wine country which is a major
feature of our destination’s tourism
industry.”
Visit San Luis Obispo County
moves to Paso Robles!
By Millie Drum
As one of the leading economic
drivers, tourism is the #1 industry
in San Luis Obispo that employs
almost 16,000 people throughout
the region. Visit San Luis Obispo
County will continue to increase
brand awareness through a large
variety of marketing programs
that feature the biggest attractions
on the Central Coast.
The agency’s effort will focus
on the recent honor from Wine
Enthusiast Magazine naming the
Paso Robles Wine Country as
“Wine Region of the Year,” along
with the proximity of Hearst
Castle, the scenic coastline, the
Cal Poly Performing Arts Center
among other popular attractions.
Perhaps most notable is the
hugely successful partnership
with Sunset Magazine for Sunset
SAVOR the Central Coast that
has earned national recognition as
the premier food, wine and lifestyle
event that is coming up on
September 25-28, 2014.
In its seventh year, the January
Restaurant Month is another
popular program that attracts
tourists to the Central Coast for
special off-season promotions for
lodging and entertainment.
The organization has established
strategic professional partnerships;
working closely with Visit California,
the state’s tourism marketing
organization as well as the national
tourism development office, Brand
USA that provides resources and
promotional opportunities for SLO
County as a destination. “Our goal
is to keep San Luis Obispo County
on the map for tourists,” said Jacob.
“Whether visitors seek coastal,
cultural or culinary experiences, we
are helping people come to the realization
that we are not just a stop
along the way
to major cities.
SLO County
is a full multi-
Stacie Jacob
day itinerary.
There’s something
for everyone
and we invite you to join us
and experience Pure Play.”
Visit San Luis Obispo County
promotes SLO County through
advertising, marketing, public relations
and group sales. Its member
base is comprised of over 500
tourism industry-related businesses
including lodging, restaurants,
golf courses and retail stores.
Visit San Luis Obispo County is
located upstairs across from the
City Park at 835 12th Street in
downtown Paso Robles. For more
Dr. Scott H. Davis - Setting
Roots in Paso Robles
After practicing medicine for almost
10 years in Redondo Beach,
California, Dr. Scott Davis has returned
home to establish his family
practice. Family ties run deep
for the young doctor who was the
last baby born at the Paso Robles
Hospital and graduated from Paso
Robles High School.
Davis is the
son of Dr. John
Davis, a prominent
dentist in
Paso Robles for
over 35 years and
younger brother
of Dr. John Justin
Davis. Dr. Scott H. Davis
“For
Business Spotlight
By Millie Drum
my younger brother, his return
to Paso offers a true sense of belonging
and the ability to have an
impact on the community,” said
Justin. “Scott is a perfect match for
this family practice in association
with Dr. Joseph Bettencourt.”
Early on, Scott considered veterinary
medicine, but changed to family
practice. He adds, “I was always
a ‘National Geographic’ kid with all
kinds of critters growing up from
cats, dogs, horses, mules, an emu
– and even a ferret! I was fascinated
with animals, but they don’t talk
much. By the time I was in junior
high, I found people to be interesting
too. I grew up with Dr. Scott
Greaves and Dr. Obie Atkinson as
my doctors. They knew everything
there was to know about every possible
malady out there. When I
decided to become a doctor, that’s
what appealed to me; the ability to
help anyone with any problem.
“I frequently tell my patients that
if I had one sentiment to put on my
doctor tombstone, it would be to
walk two miles every single day. The
benefits are amazing and achievable
by almost everyone. If you can’t
walk, then cycle or swim for 35 minutes!
My most gratifying work as a
doctor comes as I see my patients
improve emotionally and physically
Birth Songs and Battle Cries
W
By Chris Weygandt Alba
hile you’re wooing your
valentine this month, consider:
Nothing says passion like
an elephant seal. For a fresh
view of romance on Valentine’s
Day, head over to the Piedras
Blancas rookery on Highway
1, where over 15,000 northern
elephant seals celebrate their
love for life.
Hunted nearly to extinction
in the late 1800s, this marine
family has thrived since it made
a home base in the small cove
seven miles north of San
Simeon. Seals of this tribe travel
thousands of miles for months
at a time, working 24/7 in ocean
waters, but they come home
again, twice a year. Everyone stops
fishing and eating, and heads
home, to kick back for a month
or more on their Central Coast
beach, where they molt, rest and
procreate.
When the breeding season
peaks in February, Piedras
Blancas rookery is an
elephant-seal traffic jam.
Everyone’s there: mature
adults, immature adults,
dominant males, males who
wish they were, mothersto-be,
females who want to
be moms next year, and the
clan’s assorted juveniles and
newborns.
It’s noisy and crowded, and
edgy for the bulls that arrived
in December to work on their
territorial issues. Weighing
two tons and armed with huge
canine teeth, alpha males literally
go head-to-head to
claim their place at the cove
and the title Beach Master.
They rear up, bare their giant teeth,
and slam their 5,000-pound bodies
together until their bloodied
opponent slinks off.
The beach is packed with warriors
waiting for their day to come.
Among Elephant Seals
at Piedras Blancas...
New mothers sing for their children.
...Young eyes and old eyes know you.
...Behemoths bellow in battle in the surf.
...Young bulls wonder if their day will come.
Drama ripples everywhere: A
new mother gives birth near the
surf and collapses while seagulls
squabble over clean-up rights.
Nearby, a young male bellows at
the incoming tide after a passing
female spurns his advances.
In the crowd, two behemoths
suddenly galumph across the
sand, rear up and roar, then deflate
like balloons and haul
themselves off. An eruption of
bawling and squealing pours
from a thicket of females and
pups, when a nursing mother
unleashes bitter and lengthy
complaints on her next-door
neighbor, a solitary female
enjoying an afternoon snooze.
