THE DELABOLE SLATE
ISSUE 373
AUGUST 2017
Delabole.slatenewsletter@yahoo.co.uk
DO YOU FORGET?
It’s very easy, isn’t it? To forget to do
something until it’s too late, then maybe
not do it at all.
It’s great to tell everyone about your special event,
something happening that you want everyone to know
about and/or attend! BUT is your poster still on the
telegraph pole 6 months later?
Better still… why not advertise your event FREE in the
Delabole Slate which is delivered to every home in the
village.
Referring to the number of obsolete posters pasted onto
telegraph poles and notice boards throughout the village.
Surely if it’s important enough to put up then it’s your
responsibility to take it down.
Please lets keep our village looking tidy and up to date.
Thank you to the two very kind volunteers who went around our village,
prior to the Carnival, removing the obsolete posters. Ed Team
SLATE DONATIONS
Many thanks to the generous folk who have left some
money in the box at the Post Office. Any contribution
towards the production costs of The Delabole Slate are
very gratefully received and your support is much
appreciated. Thank you.
WHO SAID IT’S DULL LIVING IN
THE COUNTRY?
Well it’s certainly not dull if the countryside concerned is
Cornwall and the village is Delabole!
Here are some of the things that we can be busy helping
at / taking part in during the next few weeks:
2nd Aug is the Fire Brigade’s Summer Fete and Fun Dog
Show at the Fire Station.
4th - 6th is the Flower Festival at the Chapel.
13th sees the Skate and Park Project holding a Summer
Fete in the Playing Fields.
19th is the Village Show - which we can all probably find
a class to enter.
The Delabole Slate and how it works …
Our aim is to promote a positive feeling of a caring village community.
Your monthly newsletter is edited and produced by a team of volunteers; Tricia M, Tricia H, Barbara (Treasurer), Margaret
(Secretary), Helen, Bob (advertising), Ro, Sue, Steve and Angela. In order to deliver this publication free to every
household we rely on income from advertising, occasional grants, contributions from the Delabole Community Fundraising
Shop and voluntary donations from our collection tin looked after by Sue at the Post Office. We welcome any original
(copyright law applies) contributions in the form of interesting articles, funny stories, ‘for sale’ items, greetings and ‘thank
you’s’ are printed for free, poetry, recipes, news of local groups and activities. You may notice that we have a deadline
to receive advertisements and copy for print by the 10th of the month prior to the month of publication.
This is our monthly journey for 11 months of the year as the December / January publication is a double issue
(Hey! We get Christmas off !!) -
10th of every month - Deadline for receiving all items for publication
▼
11th of every month - Ro will empty the Slate post boxes at the Post Office, Lugg’s Garage and Spar Shop
Helen, Ro, or Sue empty the electronic mailbox at Delabole.slatenewsletter@yahoo.co.uk
▼
The incoming mail, advertisements and items for publication are distributed to our team of typists;
Helen, Sue, Angela, Steve and Ro to draft the material into our IT publishing programme
Bob confirms regular advertising requirements and collects payments.
▼
About a week later - Editorial meeting to agree the content of the next publication.
▼
The next day - Tricia M and one other ‘pastes up’ the pages for the final issue.
We try to limit the Slate to 24 pages - priority is given to Delabole items.
These are distributed to the typists who produce the final pages ready to print.
▼
3-4 days later by Helen, Sue and/or Ro - The finished pages are collated into a PDF file and sent to the printer.
1000 copies are printed each month. Printing takes about a week.
The finished copy is forwarded to the Delabole website www.delabole.com where it can be viewed in colour and/or
printed off by individuals.
▼
7 days later - Tricia M collects the finished newsletters from the printers in Camelford and delivers them to Carol who
counts them into labelled boxes. These boxes are then distributed to our volunteer deliverers throughout the village;
Leah, Joan, Tanya, Garry, Kate, Lon & Alan, Clyde & Helen, Janet, Richard and Carol.
These lovely people, in all weathers, pop your copy of the Slate through your letterbox.
▼
Once your Slate has been delivered we have about 10 days before we start all over again!!
* * * * *
We are always pleased to welcome new members to the team - so if your interest is in producing the issue, delivering,
or fundraising why not come along to our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 13th September at 7.00pm at The
Poldark Inn. Everyone is very welcome to attend.

It’s the Final Countdown…
…to 10.30am Friday 4th August, by which time all the flowers will have been arranged, signs will be in place, rotas will
be filled, refreshments will have appeared and the chapel doors will be open ready to welcome you to the 34th annual
Flower Festival over which time thousands of pounds have been raised by the village for the Cornish Hospice
movement.
If you’re new to the village or never visited before, do pop along - and, if it’s anything like previous years, you’ll be
amazed at the ingenuity and creativity of people who are mostly not flower arrangers but are generously sharing their
time and talents to create inventive displays. Full details can be found in The August Church Dates section elsewhere
in the newsletter.
Our theme this year is ‘I am…’ but, as we haven’t had our planning meeting yet, we’re unsure of the titles being chosen,
so this year’s Wordsearch consists of flowers that might (or might not) be used in the arrangements. Why not come
along on Friday, Saturday or Sunday 4th, 5th and 6th and see how many you can spot?
Finally, Monday 7th is the day when most help is needed. It’s clear, tidy and deliver day. All the displays are dismantled
and, if the organisations wish, flowers that are OK are bunched and delivered to any housebound or sick villagers that
we know about. So car drivers, flower arrangers, furniture movers, vacuum cleanerers and kettle-putter-oners would
be welcomed with opened arms. How can you resist? Patricia (212529) Helen (212558)
AUGUST 2017
Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into
heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you
into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have
seen him go into heaven. Acts 1:11
Behold, He cometh with clouds; and every eye shall
see Him, and they also which pierced Him: and all
kindreds of the earth shall wail because of Him. Even
so, Amen. Revelation 1:7
(children’s playtime, in Cornish)
August is here! Holidays from school, hopefully good weather so that you
can get outside as much as possible. We have gone past the longest day
of the year already so by the end of this month the first blackberries will be
ready to pick! Still summer but the lovely smell of blackberry and apple pie
is a sign that the year is turning, and that autumn is slowly heading our way.
Before it gets here though … so much summer to enjoy J
This month I want you to think about bees – honey bees, bumble bees,
there are lots of different kinds of bees and they are all very very important.
All bees collect pollen and nectar from flowers to eat and while they are
doing this, they pollinate the flowers. This means the plants make seeds
and fruits, which means they will survive and grow next year. Animals and
birds eat some of the fruits and seeds so, because of the bees, it means
they will survive too. Also lots and lots of the things we eat depend on bees
for pollination, without bees there would be no apples, pears, plums,
cherries or peaches for example. We would lose quite a lot of our foods if
bees disappeared so anything we can do to help bees survive has got to
be good. So what can you do to help bees?
1. Plant flowers like sage, lavender, thyme, which have lots of nectar
and pollen.
2. Provide somewhere for bees to live. Most wild bees live in small
colonies in holes in the ground or in old wood. Tie some short
lengths of bamboo together and put the bundle lying on its side by a
hedge – bees will hibernate inside and lay their eggs there.
3. Ask your adults not to use pesticides in your garden.
4. Leave some flowers to go to seed, don’t keep the garden too tidy,
make sure there are some flowers like heather which flower early in
the year and very late in the autumn to give the bees food if they
need it.
A slightly different competition this month, I would like you to design a ‘Help
The Bees’ poster, showing why we need to help bees and what we can do
to help. Do some research in books and on websites like the Nature
Detectives. Make your poster up to A4 size and use any medium-felt pens,
crayons, paint, material etc to make it bright and interesting. Get Bizzzzzy!
Don’t forget to put your name, age and phone number on the back of your poster - and Elaine
has kindly agreed to receive your entries at ‘Flowers from Bruallen’ by 10th August please.

St Teath Parish Council
Firstly, I would like to bring everyone up to date with the situation regarding the website. The Council has decided to
upgrade and renew the website so the existing site is no longer being used and will be shut down. It is hoped that the
new site will be up and running within a few weeks and I will provide an update in the next magazine report. Apologise
for any inconvenience this may cause.
The decision has also been made to delete the current Facebook page and whether or not this will be reinstated in the
future has not yet been decided. We recognise that Facebook is an up to date form of communication but it also needs
to be managed and used in the correct way.
The Council met on Monday, 10 th July at St Teath with ten members attending and a good representation from the public.
Members of the public are always welcome to attend and report any matters, raise any questions or concerns or just sit
and listen to proceedings.
You can also contact the Council anytime by emailing clerk@stteathparishcouncil.org or telephoning 01208 72789. Our
Chairman Cllr Tracey Weeks can be contacted on 01208 851828 and our Vice Chairman Cllr Gerald Heard is available
on 01840 213644. Contact details for all councillors can be found on the parish notice boards.
Advisory sub-committees have now been formed and will meet as and when required. These committees will carry out
research and site meetings and work with the Clerk and alongside other community groups. The aim of the
sub-committees is to manage the open spaces, oversee contracts, review policies, look at planning applications and
communicate with parishioners on specific matters.
Apart from the occasional site visit, meetings of the sub-committees will be advertised in the form on an agenda and
recorded by the Clerk. The committees have no discretionary powers but will report back to the Full Council. Their work
will help keep the momentum of projects and matters ongoing with the intention of enabling work to be completed in a
timelier manner.
You may have noticed the proposed new play equipment at St Teath has finally come to fruition and work has started
in preparing the site. Congratulations to the working party that made this happen.
The Delabole skate park group are working hard to fund raise and provide a facility in the park.
The Parish Council has, and will continue, to support these groups although they are both totally independent of the
Council’s work.
Over the past 15- 20 years or so, the parish of St Teath has grown considerably, both in terms of size and population.
Given the county council's published plan for growth in the county until 2030, this local growth is bound to continue,
probably to increase.
Our existing parish is mainly divided between St Teath and Delabole, the larger of the two.
Whilst St Teath enjoys its own community centre for public events, Delabole relies on the good offices of both the
Methodist Chapel and St John's Church. It must be stressed that this arrangement works admirably. However, a question
has been raised with the parish council as to whether or not Delabole should have its own village hall.
Before proceeding further with this concept your parish council is seeking your response and ideas as to the suitability
of such a facility. If a village hall were to be built, where would it be sited? Obviously it would not be a viable concept
unless it was to be utilised for ALL village projects, and thus would need to be centrally sited, with good access to all.
The parish council would welcome any comments (good or bad).
You can contact any parish councillor (list posted on all village notice boards) or contact the parish clerk at:-
clerk@stteathparishcouncil.org
Memories of Delabole – Part Two
Our next instalment of memories of the late Mr. Jack Stephens, born in 1921.
Number 3 Tor View was a cottage of four rooms, a kitchen and sitting room downstairs and two bedrooms upstairs.
There was no back door. The front door opened onto a slate paved path that led to the road and along to the other
cottages. Between the path and the road was a vegetable garden. To the left was a well which supplied all the water
for the cottages. It was provided by use of a windlass which was used to lower and raise the bucket. Windows in the
cottages were quite small and the tiny rooms were lit at night by oil lamps, whilst candles lit us to bed.
During the week, the kitchen, with its black leaded stove, in turn became the laundry room (all hand washing), the
bathroom (a tin bath placed in front of the stove), the dining room and the room for all other activity of our daily life. Only
on Sundays, after lunch, did we adjourn to the sitting room where, during the morning, father would have lit the fire. Life
was cosy – the walls were thick and we didn’t hear too much of the gales that blew.
However, there is one room that I have not mentioned – the loo! There was none in the house, nor in the garden. No,
the loo for our cottage and the ones for the other three were not in sight of the cottages!! One went out the front door,
walked down the path, across to the other side of the road, turned left walked fifty yards and there at the top of the field
was a row of four, not very sanitary, loos consisting of buckets which were emptied weekly. The toilet paper was squares
of newspaper on a piece of string and hung from a nail. This state of affairs lasted until the death of my Grandfather,
when father took over the cottages and we moved in to Tor View House. He had piped water taken to the cottages and
installed WCs.

Cornwall Councillor
I am sure by now that most of you will have had an
opportunity to view some of the plans of the proposed
skate park for the village. The team who have been
working on this have put in a tremendous amount of work,
both in clearing up the site and starting off the fundraising.
The plans on offer all look spectacular and whichever
option gets the go-ahead it will be a real boost for the
youngsters and of benefit to the community for years to
come. Well done to all involved and the way you have
approached this is a credit to the community – once you
have achieved this perhaps a new Village Hall!
There has been some very positive reaction to the
installation of a flashing speed advisor on
Westdown Road. This will only be there temporarily, as
these machines tend to lose their impact after time and
Cormac move them around the county to make best use
of them. The machine will also be recording the speeds of
the cars while in place and I will share that information with
you all in the Slate after the summer. Meanwhile the report
into traffic safety and calming through the main village is
progressing well and I intend to open a major public
consultation in the autumn.
On a slightly less positive note there are three issues which
I would consider to be very anti-social which are repeatedly
coming up at our Parish Council meetings. Dog-fouling is
a problem right across the County, but is I feel one that
affects Delabole more than other areas and certainly
worse than in the other villages I represent. This is entirely
within the means of a handful of dog owners to address
and I would plead with them to be more responsible as
many families (especially with young children) find this
very distressing indeed.
Secondly, there has been a new spate of graffiti writing in
the public loos and some of this has been of a highly
offensive nature. This reflects badly on the whole village
and as the toilets are solely the responsibility of the Parish
Council they may find the only option is to reduce the
opening hours.
Lastly, there is a long running issue with abandoned cars
in the village. This is not just a Delabole problem and there
has been an increase county-wide – however the parking
and traffic problems in the village are already such that we
do not need any additional "dead" cars clogging up the
streets. If your vehicle has come to the end of its life –
please scrap it at a registered yard.
Help
When talking to Brenda, whilst she and Jenny were kindly
helping with our Carnival float, she said that she can only
vaguely remember once being in the Carnival as a child.
She thinks the entry was something like ‘ The Vicar is
waiting for Me and My Girl’ but, despite all the very many
photos she has collected of past Carnivals, there is no
snap of little Brenda in a bridesmaid’s costume.
We know that ‘The Slate’ gets read far and wide, so
PLEASE, is there someone out there with a photograph
of this missing float?

FOR ALL YOUR BUILDING
AND ROOFING NEEDS

Delabole Primary School
Every now and then, I ask the children what makes a school? Of course they tell me that
a school needs walls and windows and doors – something that we certainly don’t take for
granted at Delabole Primary School. In fact, the fabric of the building is a constant source
of concern, as well as an increasing source of pride. This Summer, once again we will be
continuing our drive to secure the building with replacement guttering and fascias and the
refurbishment of the final two classrooms and the library space. In addition, Jo Downs –
our local glass sculptor – is creating a beautiful installation for the library which will be a
display space for children’s writing.
And then we continue…there is still so much to be done.
2017-2018 will be the Year of Books…with even more books flooding into classrooms.
Every member of staff here knows that Reading is another key ingredient to the success
of a school! Our Quiet Revolution for Reading will be an important strand of School
Improvement.
Another very important ingredient in the life of a school is the Voice of the Child. We have
been very busy gathering pupil views through different reflective opportunities. We know
the children are proud of their school, we know most of them really enjoy their learning, and we know that they understand
our core values. What we would like to develop in 2017-2018 is Pupil Leadership at every level so that they truly see
that they are agents of change and can shape their school. Children have so many great ideas and don’t see the limitations
that adults do, so really listening to their aspirations is completely liberating. When we talk about the voice of the child,
we are thinking about how we harness their thoughts, concerns and ideas, but also how we give them the skills to
articulate these clearly and with confidence. The Confident Voice will be a thread running
through all that we do, whether it is performing, problem solving, sharing ideas or expressing
their feelings. I hope we can give our children a strong sense of self, as well as empathy
for others so that they communicate really effectively. Really important work.
Finally, of course Our Core Business is Learning – learning in all its guises – and the
staff are so ambitious for the school and outward looking, that I know we will continue to
drive standards and find inspirational ways to bring learning to life. One aspect of learning
that can become masked in the drive to meet targets and deadlines, is ‘childhood’.
Increasingly now, staff are aware that A Good Childhood is under threat. Our children are
subject to so many pressures: academic, environmental, emotional and digital, that they
are in danger of losing the innocence and freedom that should go hand in hand with
childhood. It is our pledge to preserve that and celebrate it in every way we can…but of
course we cannot achieve that alone. For that reason, I would like to ask our parents, our
families and our entire community of Delabole to help us in making sure that A Good
Childhood is the right of every child. Enjoy the summer break.
Carnival Service
Another well thought through and meaningful ecumenical service was part of the 2017 marquee Carnival celebrations.
Many thanks to the Committee for including us in the events - and to friends from St. Teath for joining us.
Marie and Viv in acting mode
We were welcomed by Rev Bryan and introduced to this year’s
theme which was all about unzipping and followed on from a
banana sketch with Marie and Viv - where Viv was convinced that
bananas were vile, bit through the skin (everyone pulled a face
and went ’Ugh!’) and was only persuaded how lovely they are
when Marie unzipped it for her and she was able to taste the
delicious fruit for herself.
Further explanations of the drama were provided by Nigel’s Bible
reading, Lesley talking about God being the same for ever, Sue
E telling us about prayer in her life, Sue W giving words of
encouragement in our troubled times and Patricia speaking about
Frontline Faith in our day and age.
From our cafe-style seating, we selected 2 stones from the baskets on our tables and
Rev Angela asked us to think about 2 things in our lives that we wanted to pray for. This
we did whilst listening to a meditative song. We then brought the stones to the front,
washed them and left them behind in a collective basket.
After the blessing, we had Coffee and Cookies, kindly provided by Ruth and Ed, bought
bananas kindly donated by Dave from ‘The Vine’, made an offering for Wadebridge
FoodBank (£215.10) and sat back to watch the crowning of our 2017 royalty. Helen
Couldn’t resist a picture of proud Mum and Dad as their girls were crowned after the service.

CAMELFORD & DISTRICT BOWLING CLUB
The Camelford green saw four home matches last week with the 'A's and 'B's having two fixtures each and on each of
the evenings the Camels could only manage one point. On Monday the 12th the second tier hosted a Kensey Vale 'B'
team. Mike Bray's four had a comfortable victory to win the one point with Malcolm Prout's side only four shots adrift.
Unfortunately Kenny Bray's were never in the picture and lost by fifteen shots. The home team got 58 shots to the
visitors 66.
H. Teague, G. Morris, E. Lowe, M. Prout lost 18 - 22
N. Holmes, R. Fry, D. Teague, K. Bray lost 13 - 28
T. Goulbourne, E. Cato, B. Coleshill, M. Bray won 27 - 16
The following evening the 'A' squad was on call against a Stratton 'A' team and again one point was gathered, Stewart's
team the beneficiary. Colin's side was only four shots adrift but Neill's four never got a look-in. The visitors won this
encounter by 63 shots to 54.
R. Shillaber, K. Davey, M. Bray, C. Parsons lost 23 - 27
N. Holmes, I. White, M. Prout, S. Hambly won 21 - 11
F. Bennett, R. Staple, G. Risdon, N. Wright lost 10 - 25
Then on the Wednesday the 'B' team welcomed a Dunheved ' B' side and overall lost by 49 shots to 56. Alec's side
gained the one point with Bob's side four shots adrift and Ken's team losing by seven.
D. Rhodes, D. Teague, F. Hyett, A. Luckin won 21 - 17
T. Goulbourne, R. Fry, M. Bray, B. Coleshill lost 14 - 18
K. Davey, G. Coe, E. Lowe, K. Bray lost 14 - 21
Finally, on Thursday the 'A' squad rounded off the week, greeting Bodmin 'A', ultimately losing 53 shots to 71. Neill's
side made amends for Tuesday's defeat by taking the home team's one point. Stewart's side nearly gained a win only
losing by two shots but this was an evening Colin wished to forget, losing 10 - 37.
N. Holmes, I. White, M. Prout, S. Hambly lost 17 - 19
R. Shillaber, K. Davey, M. Bray, C. Parsons lost 10 - 37
F. Bennett, R. Staple, G. Risdon, N. Wright won 26 - 15
Don't forget if anyone is interested in joining the club or would like any information regarding bowls please call Secretary
A Methodist Minister’s View
In many of our centres of population there are regular Summer events which draw together our local communities.
Carnivals, Fetes, Flower Festivals and Cream Teas are part of the mix. We need to value these events, and be grateful
to the people who organise them because they enrich our experience of Community life. For community life to really
work it needs the support and involvement of all of us.
When I think of Carnivals I think of my experiences of Carnivals locally – both Summer and Autumn events – but also
am reminded of the two large Carnival events well known in this country. I am thinking of Notting Hill Carnival which
happens in late August, and the Bridgewater Carnival held in early November. I have no first-hand experience of these
events but have seen some television coverage of them.
However, Notting Hill has come to our attention in another way, through the tragic events of the fire at the Grenfell Tower
in mid-June. As I write this article in early July the outcomes of the tragedy are still causing headlines in our news
bulletins because of the way in which they were not well handled by the local and national government officials, as well
as the implications for similar ‘tower’ structures in other parts of the country.
What was impressive however, was the response of members of the local community. Immediately people donated
food and clothing, offered beds, opened up buildings for use, and got alongside the victims to offer support. In fact,
there was a surfeit of clothing, such was the generosity shown. This was Community working at its best.
It is good to be able to commend the community response seen at the time of the tragedy, but should it take tragic
circumstances to bring out the best in us. I am reminded of two occasions when Jesus talked about us sharing with
each other. On one occasion, he commended people to ‘love your neighbour as you love yourself’ (Matthew 22:39) and
on another occasion commended people who offered food to the hungry, drinks to the thirsty, and clothes to destitute
as well as welcoming strangers and visiting the needy regardless of who they were (see Matthew 25: 35- 40).
It would be good for each of us to think about these commendations as we think about our contributions to community
living. Enjoy community life as you give and receive.
Every blessing,
Bryan Ede
Memories of Mr. Jack Stephens
A few months ago we published the first instalment of
these memories but haven’t had space to include the
subsequent sections. To restrict costs, we’re trying to limit
‘The Slate’ to 24 pages and prioritise local and current
happenings.
Don’t worry, the remaining episodes will appear and, in
fact, I had phone calls from Jack’s daughter (living in
Taunton) and his nephew from Launceston. They were
very interested in the memoirs and we’ll be e-mailing a
complete version to his daughter.
Nephew Nick had seen the article on the Delabole website
(thank you, Chris) and may well visit us during the Flower
Festival - so, if he’s there and you remember any of the
family, do share your recollections. Helen Hicks
31 st with the final concert on September 14 th .
All will be held in Tintagel Social Hall, Fosters Lane,
beginning at 8pm, and will include a raffle and auction of
produce, cakes and flowers, for choir funds.
On Sunday, 27 th August, we are in concert at Bude Castle
in aid of RNLI, starts at 8pm prompt.
We often say we could do with new members. Our
membership numbers have dropped quite dramatically
lately, mainly through ill health of some of our members,
and we really do need to recruit some new choir members
if we are to continue, so if you feel you would like a new
hobby, within a friendly group of like minded souls, do
speak to any choir member, and come along to a practice
night. These are held on Tuesday evening in Tintagel
Chapel Sunday School Room. There are no auditions, but
plenty of help and encouragement from other members,
and friendly chat over a cup of tea half way through the
evening.
All enquiries to Hon. Secretary John Sadler on 01840
212583 or Chairman, Bob Metters on 01840 213736.
