INTRODUCTION
Welcome to “120 Practical Self-Defence Tips” and thank you for downloading this
eBook!
If you have downloaded this report it can either mean that you are an avid martial
artist or a curious surfer that has just decided to download this eBook and see
what this guy called Warren Ho has to say about the topic of self-defence.
Alternatively, you might be a safety-conscious citizen that has become terrorised
by the fear of becoming a victim of crime, or frustrated with the criminal
elements that are around you and your environment. Perhaps still you have been
a victim of crime in the past and have decided you will be a victim no more and
have decided to take a proactive step in combating that victim-mentality.
Whatever your reason, I applaud you for taking ACTION. “People become victims
of crime not because they can’t take care of themselves, but rather because they
have never been exposed to the violence involved in crime, or have never taken
any ACTION to educate or empower themselves against crime.”.
This is your first step in taking action to ensure the safety of yourself and your
loved ones.
With that said, this eBook is by no means a substitute for actual disciplined and
consistent physical training, however, what it will do is create and enhance your
awareness of what self-defence options are available to you. Furthermore, it will
start to create what I term, “The Self-Defence Attitude”!
And now, please go forth and read this eBook! Any feedback will be appreciated
so feel free to drop me an email at info@defence-unlimited.com.
Till next time, get EDUCATED, feel EMPOWERED and live a FULLY-ENGAGED life!
Yours sincerely
WARREN HO – FOUNDER OF DEFENCE UNLIMITED
Warren began his martial arts career when he was 9 years old. His love for the
martial arts led him to experiment in a variety of martial arts that include Karate,
Taekwondo, Kendo, Kumdo, Kyusho, Eskrima, Wing Chun, Hapkido, AMOK!, Krav
Maga , Systema, Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Chi Kong, Hsing-Yi, Muay Thai and Tuk Kong Mul
So. He currently holds a 4 th Dan in WTF-style Taekwondo, a 4 th Dan in Kendo, a 2 nd
Dan in Hapkido (World Hapkido Federation), a 2 nd Dan at Kwanjangdo Martial Arts
Academy, Level 2 Certified Pressure Point Instructor (Kyusho International), and a
Krav Maga Instructor (Krav Maga South Africa).
He has represented South Africa at several at European and World Kendo
Championships, earning him full South African National Sports Colours for each of
these events.
Warren has condensed his wealth of knowledge and experience in martial art,
self-defence, personal development and health & wellness, into the various
Defence Unlimited services and programs. Warren firmly believes that any selfdefence
system must be simple, effective, relevant and practical for anyone.
Warren’s unique way of conveying the self-defence message is powerful,
interactive and fun! As Warren would say, “a topic as serious as self-defence can
best be studied while having fun!”
It is his belief that if more people took responsibility for their own personal safety
and skilled themselves with effective self-defence training, it could lead to greater
awareness and avoidance of crime. This alone is empowering, but to carry this
message further, he also encourages positive engagement in their lives– to live a
life without fear or frustration and to unlock that potential within themselves and
live a life they have always wanted.
His belief extends beyond borders and ultimately believes a global movement by
all individuals to educate and empower themselves against crime, and to engage
and contribute positively to society, leading to the eventual eradication of crime
WHY DO SELF-DEFENCE?
We are subjected to more crime and violence now than what any other previous
generation has ever been subject to. For many, this exposure can be debilitating,
and severely hampers their ability to explore their full potential to do great things
in their lives.
Therefore, with the correct self-defence training, one is able to build
CONFIDENCE, RESILIANCE and DISCIPLINE, thereby allowing themselves to unlock
their potential and live life to the fullest!
“Many victims of crime are victims, not because they lack the capacity to fight,
but because they have never had sufficient exposure to the violence or the
training to deal with such violence.”
Do you feel that this violence in crime, or even just the fears or frustrations of
crime, is limiting YOUR ability to explore YOUR full potential to live a happier and
fully-engaged life?
120 PRACTICAL SELF-DEFENCE TIPS
“What Am I Willing To Fight, Die And Kill For, And Why?”
This is the one question I ask every participant who has ever been on
my “Introduction to Self Defence Workshop”. I further ask them to
write the question down, and answer it when they have time to spare
at home. It's the one thing, above everything else I teach in my
workshops that I emphasis they need to do, and consider very carefully
what they decide is the answer. The reason for this importance is
because all subsequent self defence tactics and techniques thereafter,
will depend on what they are willing to fight, die and kill for.
Let’s explore this question a bit deeper:
1. What are you willing to fight for? Humans only fight for two
reasons: Firstly, for the survival/protection of ourselves or our
loved one(s). This survival mechanism stems back to prehistoric
times, where we had to fight to survive the elements and the
120 PRACTICAL SELF-DEFENCE TIPS
wilderness to which we inhabited. From a scientific perspective,
this refers to the brain stem (old brain) that controls the survival
mechanisms of flight or fight. For some, the reaction is to flee a
potential hazard (flight), for other, the response is to fight (reason
number 1). It is instinctual, and is connected to the way we react
to danger. However, this instinct also gets triggered in another
way - we have a perceived danger/threat confront us. Sometimes,
the threat may be the passing of a sarcastic comment; or a
sudden lane-change into our lane by another car, or even by a
snobbish glance or smirk in our direction by a ruffian at a bar.
Whatever the perceived threat is, it is more the fight-reaction we
get, not because it threatens our survival, but rather because it
threatens our personal ego – this is reason number 2. In my
opinion, the decision to fight in either of these circumstances is
your choice to make, but you need to ask if it is a fight that you
would really want to get involved in and face the potential
consequences.
2. What are you willing to die for? This refers to self-sacrifice and
the people and things that you would be willing to put your life at
risk for. For some, when I said "things” in my previous sentence, it
might have made you feel a bit unconformable, and you may even
have shook your head in disagreement. Is there possibly any
"thing" (in terms of material possession) that one would be willing
to put your life on the line for? As horrific as this might sound,
there are indeed some things that you may decide is worth
120 PRACTICAL SELF-DEFENCE TIPS
sacrificing your life for. An example? How about an extreme one?
You are at home and there is a life support machine that sustains
the life of your sick spouse. Would you be willing to lay your life
down for that machine if something were to threaten it? Makes
you think doesn’t it? The point here is that there is no right or
wrong answer. We all have the greatest gift that is often
overlooked- the right to choose. With that said though, hospitals
and cemeteries are filled with people that made bad choices, but
the fact remains, it is/was within their right to choose what was
right or wrong for them.
3. What are you willing to kill for? This is the most consequential
and controversial question to answer. Back in prehistoric times
again, the cave man would kill their fellow kind for food, shelter
and mates. Oh wait, that happens now too! However, with the
advancement of human civilization, we have also begun to dictate
that some previous prehistoric methods are no longer favorable
or even legal (although that does not stop the many criminal out
there). What we are willing to kill for is again something that we
have to decide upon, which has no right or wrong answer to the
individual, but has more severe consequence to it. For instance,
should you find yourself in a situation where you have to take
another human being's life, there is what I call "surviving the SLY",
as a reference to surviving the Situation, surviving the Law and
surviving Yourself. Surviving the situation implies you need to
survive the immediate threat that has come your way, even if this
120 PRACTICAL SELF-DEFENCE TIPS
means taking another’s life. Surviving the law pertains to the legal
repercussions you will have to face after taking someone life. You
will need to answer to the laws of your land for your actions and
let them be the judge as to whether you had acted lawfully or not.
Lastly, surviving yourself - you will have to live with the knowledge
that you had killed someone. For a God-fearing Christian, this
might be seen as devastating since they would have to had had
broken one the Ten Commandments as dictated by the Bible. For
others, being labeled a killer may not be the most appealing, but
it is something that will stick to you like a fly on a sticky-fly-traproll.
4. Then there is the WHY? For a long time this question eluded me.
Then it dawned upon me through a flash-back session with one of
my past coaches. "The quality of your answers lies in the quality
of the questions you ask", he reminded me. The “why”, therefore,
is probably the biggest and most elusive one that many selfdefence
courses have failed to ask. Why would you be willing to
fight, die and kill for X (x being what you have just answered in the
3 questions above)? Why is it so important to you? Why would
NOT fighting for, or dying for or killing for X be so tragic for you?
It is a question that, if answered truthfully, will surprise or even
shock you. The key here is to be absolutely truthful when
answering this question. What you might conclude (as I had) is
that the real reason why you are willing to do all these things for
120 PRACTICAL SELF-DEFENCE TIPS
X, is because of how the loss of X will make YOU feel, and how it
would affect YOUR life!
I stress again that there is no right or wrong to these questions. It is
more important that you make these the decision while you are in a
rational and logical state of mind. Unfortunately, it is often those times
that we let our emotional state at the heat-of-the-moment that makes
us do irrational and possible life-debilitating choices.
So, take the time now, while you are sitting comfortably at your desk, in
a secure and safe environment to answer these 4 questions. Decide
what is it EXACTLY is it that you would be willing to fight, die and kill for,
and why. Once done, make multiple copies of it and hang it around the
areas that you will see it each and every day. Be constantly reminded as
to what you had decided, and only get involved if something threatens
the people and/or things you have put on this list.
1. The best self-protection technique is one that allows you to walk
away intact and harm-free.
2. Awareness is your first step! Avoidance is the next! Survival action
should be the last.
3. Protect what is important you - yourself, loved ones and possession,
in that order.
4. Protect your possessions, but not to the expense of yourself or loved
ones!
5. Some techniques used by attackers are: Dialogue, Deception,
Distraction and Destruction. This is known as the Four D's.
6. Attacker’s technique 1 - Dialogue: This is designed to disarm and
distract the victim. They will normally approach the victim in a nonthreatening
manner.
7. Attacker’s technique 2 - Deception: The attacker makes him/herself
appear harmless. Even as far as posing as a handicapped person,
begging at an intersection.
8. Attacker’s technique 3 - Distraction: Used to switch off any instinctive
or spontaneous actions the victim might have.
9. Attacker’s technique 4 - Destruction: Physical attacks to the victim to
subdue him/her before proceeding further (e.g. rape, mugging).
10. Don't be a hero. A lot can be said about heroic people, however, be
aware of the consequences.
11. Assess the situation with a clear mind.
12. Get reasonably fit. Not only will your energy levels improve but so
will your alertness and your ability to protect yourself physically,
should you need to.
13. Locate your nearest medical centres, hospitals, clinics and local
doctors. You never know when you will need it.
14. Eat proper meals. Not only will your energy levels improve but so will
your alertness. You are what you eat!
15. In the time of need to defend yourself, anything can become a
weapon - umbrella, shoes, belts. Be creative!
16. High kicks only works in movies. Punch or slap rather, but if you need
to, kick low and hard!
17. When asked for the time, do you look down at your watch? Beware
that this is a technique used by criminals to distract you before they
attack!
18. People only fight over two things - survival and pride. Don't be a
victim of pride.
19. Go on a First Aid course. It will help not only make you aware of the
dangers out there, but also on how to assist if required.
20. Don't go to ATM's in the evening, unless it in a well-lit and a
reasonably amount of people walking around.
21. Be aware that criminals go on holiday too! Chances are it will be the
same place as you!
22. Prevention is better than cure. Don’t take unnecessary risks
especially when your life and those of your loved ones is involved
23. Safety in numbers. For instance, if you need to go to an ATM in a
shopping mall that would require you to walk, take a friend or two
with you.
24. A defence tip a day will keep the crooks away but still stay aware as
they are out there! Remember 4 D's: Dialogue, Deception,
Distraction, Destruction
25. You only have control over your own actions, not those of others.
Learn to master your actions and you're almost there in terms of selfprotection.
26. Avoidance and awareness is the best form of self-protection! But
bring on you survival attitude when required! Empower yourself with
knowledge, skill, behaviour!
27. A samurai maxim: "The more you sweat on the training mat, the less
you will bleed on the battlefield.”
28. The fact is you will never be more prepared than a criminal who has
targeted you. They have the element of surprise. However, prepare
as best as you can.
29. Business people and students must learn to disengage from their
work when walking or driving around. Focus of the environment
around you at the moment.
30. Survival from an altercation involves surviving the immediate threat,
surviving the law and lastly, surviving your conscience.
31. There must be no hesitation in self-defence. There is no time for
compassion, politeness or compromise.
32. Strike hard, strike fast and then get to safety!
33. Most decent people are born and brought up to respect each other.
It takes training to be able to overcome those 'barriers' and use
physical force on another.
34. 3 stages of self-defence: Pre-situation, the Situation and Postsituation.
Recognise each stage and apply the awareness, avoidance
and survival methods at each.
35. Different degrees of self-defence imply using the appropriate force in
an altercation. However, when in doubt, hit hard, hit fast and then
get to safety!
36. In an altercation, the element of surprise is already lost as the
criminal has already targeted you. Use the appropriate force to
defend yourself.
37. Pre-emptive tip: Keep your cell phone charged at all times to ensure
that you have a means to communicate in an emergency.
38. Pre-emptive tip: Keep your cell phone on you or close to hand at all
times.
39. Answer your cell phone calls when loved ones call. It will reduce the
stress factor in their lives!
40. Cell phones can play a very important part in personal safety,
especially women and children.
41. Cell phones service providers have distress SMS's services that can
notify relevant people of a situation at the touch of a button.
42. Hesitation can be your biggest downfall in an altercation. If you feel
your life is in danger, strike first and hard!
43. Improvise and constantly be aware of what objects are around you
and how they can be used to defend yourself.
44. Survival is also about surviving the law. Be wary of the law regarding
self-defence, however, don’t let it hamper you when you need to
defend yourself.
45. Did you know that the majority of muggings are done with a knife or
a sharpened instrument (e.g. sharpen screw driver)?
46. Avoid confrontational situations. If you can see trouble ahead, try
and avoid it. Always be aware!
47. Self-defence, awareness and avoidance is an ALWAYS things, and not
a "sometime" thing. Practise it constantly so it becomes second
nature.
CONCLUSION
And there you have it!
120 tips that represents an accumulation of some of the most practical tips for
self-defence that I have come across!
BUT WAIT…
There is more!
Believe it or not, but I have a few hundred more that I still want to share with you
and ones which I will be sending to you FREE OF CHARGE in the very near future!
In fact, there is a whole bunch of free stuff that I still want to send you, but the
sheer volume would be overwhelming!
WHY AM I DOING THIS?
Well, I genuinely think that the more I give, the more I will receive back! Don’t get
me wrong, I am no saint and I would like to think I have some business savvy;
however, I do think it is better to serve first before asking for anything in return.
It’s also a good way, I hope, to show you that I genuinely am interested in your
person safety. In a way it is almost clichéd as I truly want “world peace”. This is
my way of contributing to that vision, and hopefully inspires more people to work
towards that vision too by taking their self-defence training seriously.
So, for now, I bid you farewell, and hope that we continue our journey together
for the weeks, months and even years to come!
Till next time, get EDUCATED, feel EMPOWERED and live a FULLY-ENGAGED life!
Yours sincerely
