THE ATE R
ER 1-14,

Salutations
Greetings and welcome to the Sixth Annual Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival.
The film festival is now in its sixth year of bringing quality gay and lesbian film to Austin's community. Over the years the festival has
grown enormously; what started as simply 4 programs offilms has expanded to two weeks worth ofover 50 films and videos in 25
programs with 4 guest speakers. We welcome the ever-widening participation of the community through this year's sponsorships. With
the generous support ofour sponsors we are able to bring many more exciting films and fabulous speakers such as the world-renowned
author, acror, keen wit and arbiter of taste and manners, Quentin Crisp and film critic B. Ruby Rich with her hilarious deconstruction of
the comedy group Kids in the Hall.
The project of the film festival has never been more important. As gay and lesbian issues are played out on a national scene, gay and
lesbian film has become more in vogue. Several major srudios are in the process ofproducing gay fearures, but Hollywood's commitment
to making gay and lesbian film is anything but firm. The opportunity to see representations ofourselves in film remains rare. Festivals
like Austin's continue ro serve as the springboard for most gay films, and often are the only outlet for many short or experimental films
and videos.
Recent political battles and a rise in hate crimes clearly demonstrate the importance oflesbian and gay visibility, and the film festival
offers an excellent opportunity for such visibility in several ways. The festival makes a gay and lesbian presence known to the rest ofour
city and is an invitation for others to learn about us. It also gives us an opportunity to become visible to each other, serving as a forum for
a discussion of the issues within our community and for educating ourselves about each other. Through visibility we become powerfulwe
can claim the power ro define our own lives, to refute hateful demonizing, and to inspire our sisters and brothers. We see the work of
the Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival as a part of that struggle and we invite you to join us as we explore ourselves and
our communities. In closing, a heartfelt thank you goes to all who have given generously of their time, talent and money in order to bring
about this festival. -Jeff Hitt
Resident Alien
Director: jonathan Nossiter
USA 1991 35mm 85 mins. Mr. Crisp will hold a question-and-answer session following the Saturday,
October 2nd showing of Resident Alien.
As Sting wrote and sang, ''I'm an alien. I'm a legal alien. I'm an Englishman in New York." The inspiration for this song, and this film, is the naked civil
servant himself, Quentin Crisp.
For those unfamiliar with this uniquely flamboyant persona, Quentin Crisp gained nororiety in England by "coming our" as a homosexual in 1931. In 1976,
Crisp achieved his lifelong dream of "escaping" England and coming ro New York Ciry. Resident Alien is a fascinaring portrair of rhis truly memorable
character now firmly entrenched in New York City.
In essence, Resident Alien is a documentary abour Quentin Crisp, as revealed by Crisp and his friends, admirers and detractors. Bur writer-direcrorproduce'r-actor
Jonathan Nossiter has expanded the dimensions of this filmed account, by curiously staging certain sequences. It is a sublime mix of rhe real
and the surreal. As is Crisp.
The end result is a unique format thar perfectly serves Crisp's unique presence. It
seems almost certain that the art-house crowd will nor only love this film, bur thar
they will also take Quentin Crisp to their heart, turning him into even more of
a cause celebre.
The film opens wirh a strange black-and-white sequence that shows
a silhouetted figure walking down a darkened alley. When he
emerges, we see ir is Crisp, and he is repearedly sropped by
people saying "I know you. You're famous."
This accessible intro then segues into various acquaintances
giving us their analysis of Crisp and what he is about. Of
course, the most revealing and humbling words are urtered by
Crisp, himself. Most of whar he says is ulrra-quotable, and is
in fact often repearedly quoted by irs charming originator.
The most intriguing segment is when Crisp and John Hurt,
who portrayed him in The Naked Civil Servant, together
watch that movie on a small TV in Crisp's depressing
apartment.
In another scene, we witness several audience members of the
"Sally Jessy Raphael" show lambast Crisp. He seems
unphased, but we seethe for him. It is this sense of not only
wanting to get to know him, bur also ro prorect him from any
further harm from sociery, thar
permeated this film,
Quentin Crisp is a lovable,
eccentric character who is
lovingly and memorable _
captured in Resident Alien.
Being At Home With Claude
Director: jean Boudin
Canada 1992 35mm 84 mins.
Not since My Private Idaho has same-sex love and passion been probed more revealingly
than in French-Canadian director Jean Boudin's film, Being at Home with Claude. At a
time when the subject of homosexuality is under microscopic scrutiny there comes this
compelling psychological study of a crime of passion. In both films the male street hustlerstrapped
by their lifestyle ofdesperation-are doomed. But what we experience in the film's
telling is the basic need antI yearning to love and be loved that reaches
beyond prostitution, sexual desire and gratification. The
beginning of the film in which a vice detective interrogates unmercifully the young hustler, Yves (acted beautifully by Roy
Dupuis) into a confession to a crime is excessively prolonged by at least ten minutes, but what follows is the boy's highly
charged emotional narrative that probes the depths of same-sex love and passion that is rarely explored or understood in
today's world.
The film, in color and black and white, is stunningly mounted and enhanced by a full orchestral musical score. All in all a
haunting experience on film.
Forbidden Love
Directors: Aerlyn Weissman and
Lynn Fernie
Canada 1992 16mm 85 mins.
Compelling, often hilarious and always rebellious, the nine women interviewed in
Forbidden Love paint a portrait of lesbian sexuality and survival in Canada during the
1950's and 60's when lesbian love was "the love that dared not speak its name."
Against a fascinating backdrop of book covers from lesbian
pulp novels, tabloid headlines, archival photographs and film
clips, these women recount stories about their first love and
their search for the beer parlours and bars where openly
"gay" women were tolerated in Vancouver, Toronto and
Montreal. Their histories are interwoven with a fictional
love story inspired by the then-popular lesbian paperback
novels.
Forbidden Love proudly shows a community once
consigned to the twilight world of silence and exile.
In doing so, it brings lesbian history out of the closet and contributes a valuable history of sexuality in Canada
charting a territory most often ignored in traditional accounts of the past.
Directors: Laurie Colbert and Dominique Cardona CD
Thank God I'm A Lesbian is an uplifting and entertaining documentary about the diversity of lesbian identities. Writers
Sarah Schulman, Dionne Brand and Nicole Brossard, musician Lee Pui Ming, and many other prominent women speak
frankly and articulately about issues ranging from coming out, racism, bisexuality and SM ro the evolution of (he feminist
and lesbian movements, outing, compulsory heterosexuality and lesbian literature. Inclusive of various and often
contradictory points ofview, Thank God I'm A Lesbian successfully proposes an alternate vision of self and community
that is realistic and positive.
B. Ruby Rich will be on hand at the Friday, October 8th showing.
Kids in the Hall is a young Toronto comedy team with a penchant for drag, gender-bending, and some of the most outrageous pro-homo skits ever beamed
over the airwaves. They are also one of network TV's best kept secrets (their CBS series airs at 2:00 a.m.), although this hasn't stopped them from developing
a loyal cult following. If you're new to Kids, or a die-hard fan, join us for an energetic tribute ro American TV's best TVs.
Critic and admitted fan B. Ruby Rich introduces you to the very best (and queerest) of the
Kids' first five seasons. Would you believe the Sappho Sluggers, a dyke softball team
(played, of course, by the same five guys who play everyone else) with a martini-mixing
guest coach? Or Running Faggot, a new folk hero for our times' Or Dracula, a gay
aesthete with a taste for rough trade?
Plus don't miss the foolproof test for gayness, as devised by beloved secreraries Kathy
and Cathy (whose most ferocious insults, incidentally, are reserved for
Tanya, the temp). Don't miss the shocking episode that
the public debut of "Celebrity," the AIDS sketch that CBS
Caught Looking
Director:
Great Britain 1991
Constantine Giannaris
16mm 35 mins.
An innovative film from Constantine Giannaris, who has swiftly and deservedly become a name-towatch
amongst international filmmakers. He was recently voted best gay filmmaker of the year by
the British magazine Gay Times, and at the Berlin Film Festival, Caught Looking was unanimously
awarded the Teddy Bear Prize for Best Gay Short.
Caught Looking is a sexy and subversive comedy about gay men's stereorypical sexual fantasies; it's
built around a new virtual realiry home computer game in which the player can select any historical
period or location, and then insert himself into the action. Caught Looking was originally made for
Channel Four's Out series, but - unsurprisingly - deemed too explicit
for mid-evening television.
The Gay Rock N' Roll Years
Director: Shauna Brown
Great Britain 1991 video 60 mins.
Made for BBC2' s extended evening of lesbian and gay programming,
Saturday Night Out (which in tum was inspired by the
success of Channel Four's Out), The Gay Rock N' Roll Years is
a giddy through the 50's onwards, using archive clips and pop
music. All the great sruff is here - Tom Robinson, Sandie
Shaw, the Pet Shop Boys, Kylie Minogue - as well as some
especially scary 70's disco fashions. The music is cut to queer
moments in British history: ftom the campaign for law
reform ro Clause 28; ftom Dirk Bograde, to chanting
lesbians invading a prime time news broadcast.

Nitrate Kisses
Director:
USA 1992
-Los An!',eles Fest
Barbara Hammer
16mm 67 mins.
Barbara Hammer is America's most famous lesbian filmmaker. She has produced at least 50 films since the early 70's
more than any other lesbian artist in the world. There have been retrospectives of her work at the Museum of Modern Art
in New York, the Berlin Film Festival, the Pompidou Centre in Paris and elsewhere, and she has won a multitude of prizes.
And yet she didn't start making films until she had rurned thirty. Nitrate Kisses is Hammer's most major work yet. It is
nothing less than a history of lesbian and gay culrure in America-or, more precisely, a pioneering, evocative compression of
ideas, theories, images and stories abour the dark corners of lesbian and gay history.
It's not a traditional
documentary, yet its
unconventional methods
amount ro an encyclopedia of
information. On the soundtrack
we hear the hisrories of Maria, a
Latina lesbian born in 1904; of Ruth, who speaks of the fear
of being discovered lesbian while in the Army; ofSandy,
who speaks of her attempts, in cross-dressing, ro bind her
breasts; and ofJerre, who tells of confronting the shipping
industry during WWII about sexual discrimination.
r
\ r
Archival footage from the first gay film in the U.S., Lot in
Sodom (1933), as well as footage from German films of the
30's are interwoven with the contemporary sexual activities .
of four gay and lesbian couples. Hammer's uniquely
affectionate scenes of two older lesbians love-making are a
true first for lesbian and gay cinema.
I'll Love You Forever...Tonight
Director: Edgar Michael Bravo
USA 1993 16mm 80 mins.
Edgar Michael Bravo believes that his I'll Love You Forever .... Tonight is the first American gay fearure film to be written and directed by a Latino. Made
on a low budget, it served as Bravo's UCLA thesis. Most impressive of all is that it is such a good picrure.
In so many ways, I'll Love You Forever ... Tonight, shot in crisp, uncluttered black-and-white images, is a notably matute work. It's as if Bravo had brought
a David Hockney swimming pool painting ro life and revealed that the uniformly good looking young men taking in the sun, the kind who aren't supposed
ro have any problems, are just as vulnerable and needy for love as everyone else.
Economy is the hallmark of Bravo's effortless, deceptively
casual style: What interests him is his people's need for love
- as distinct from sex - and he doesn't therefore weigh
down his srory with gay issues that are actually exrraneous
ro it.
The story revolves around two friends on vacation in
Palm Springs, where they are joined by a group of men
including an ex-lover of one of the vacationers. The
trip rums out ro be a failute, yet the emotional tug-of
wars that erupt over the several days have the salutary
effect of propelling confrontations with their families,
each other, and themselves.
@ Last Call at Maud's
Director: Paris Poirier
USA 1992 16mm 74 mins.
Paris Poirier, director,
will be on hand to
answer questions after
the Friday, October
1 st showing.
Above all, Last Call at Maud's is a picture of a gang of feisty, smart, lively - and wild - women. They may be sining around and talking, bur the old
photos in Paris Poirier's documentary, along with the home movies and the stories that the women tell, describe a less than setried life. If the group were one
person, we'd say with considerable respect and appreciation, "She has a past."
The setting for the movies is the closing after 23 years of Maud's bar in San Francisco, one of the f~w lesbian bars in the city. The reason for the closing,
according to the owner, is simply that the bar had 23 years, bur the world was changing and younger lesbian women find their social life in different ways.
So most of the women interviewed for the picture are well into middle age. They tell srories of how it was to be lesbian in the '50s, living in secrecy from the
straight world and even dating gay men so both would have a good cover.
In the '60s, with the hippies, it was easier to come our a litrie bit, and finally in the '80s, at least in San Francisco, one could come out in public
;
withour too much· danger.
The film starts small and winds up telling the considerable srory of a community that's hidden to many. It's a
community with history and tradition. People grew up in this community; they witnessed and lived through
extensive change.
The women in the film speak from a powerful sense of personal and social identity. They've lived much of their lives
underground, bur none of them seems stricken by regret or ground down by hardship, and they make no claim to
represent anyone but themselves.
You don't have to be lesbian to see something of your own life in them; you don't have ro be lesbian to appreciate the
heightened energy of people who've lived their lives on the fringe.
Bottoms Up
Bar-Hopping Queers of the Silver Screen
Daniel Mangin
USA 100 mins. video
Daniel Mangin will be on hand at the Saturday, October 9th showing.
Daniel Mangin, who first spotlighted movies with his popular Psycho Killers and Twisted
Sisters program, has now released his second clip-and-lecture effort which is more specialized.
Bottoms Up: Bar-Hopping Queers ofthe Silver Screen zeros in on the notions ofgay
and lesbian identity that come through Hollywood's most popular setting for display of
"deviant" sexuality - the gay bar, which has provided titillation (and some wild misinforma
tion) in more movies than you would expect.
According to Mangin, the cinematic notion of gay bars perfectly illustrates the popular media's ongoing stigmatization of
homosexuality as a threatening, mysterious, aberrant side of humanity. Mangin utilizes clips from some 50-odd movies to
illustrate his thesis, going back as far as 1919's German Different From the Others and leaping right up to the inevitable
Basic Instinct. As painful as the stereotypes they proffer are, many of these sequences are howlingly - if inadvertently - funny.
Though they vary in style, tact, and message, gay bar scenes have traditionally underlined the old-school image of homosexuality
as a lonely, ostracized path. The idea is that gay men and women have nowhere to go but these dank dives where emotional
fulfillment is nearly impossible. The hero of In Love Again sums it up in voice-over: "At least you have a place you can come to
sit and talk with friends .. . at least it's better than sitting at home alone . .. You don't have a home."
Prince In Hell (Prinz In Holleland)
Director: Michael Stock
Germany 7993 76mm 96 mins,
In German with English subtitles
Visually, Prince In Hell looks like a German remix of No
Skin OffMy Ass, in color and on a decent budget.
Narratively, it's a hard-hitting parable about post
reunification Berlin: a hard-core drama about junkies and
prostitution wrapped in the trappings of fairy tale meta
phors: My Own Private Idaho without the view.
A yourhful, disenchanted queer trio fuck each other, then fuck
each other over. Amidst the vanishing countercultural niches of
Berlin, P.e. Stefan tries to prevent his boyfriend Jockel from the
downward spiral of heroin addiction. Jockel finds more sympathy
in the arms of mischievous Micha, and the two rour a landscape of
drinking, demos, drag bars, and the threat of Nazi street violence.
A first feature by 25-year-old direcror Michael Stock, Prince in Hell
updates the tradition of Fassbinder for a '90s audience {it even scars longtime Fassbinder collabora
tor Harry Baer as a seedy pusher who trades drugs for sex}. It has the sheen of an anarchist's dream
drug-taking, unsafe sex, S/M, vomiting - but beneath the nihilism is a surprisingly romantic heart.
Nevenheless, a warning is necessary: This film contains graphic scenes which may be upsetting to
some vIewers.
Westler East of the Wall
Director: Wieland Speck
West Germany 16mm 94 mins.
Westler East of the Wall played at the 1989 festival and has been one of the most requested films to be brought back. Westler is a story of love divided by
the Berlin Wall. The film starts in Los Angeles, about as far west as a German tourist can go. Here Felix, the gay German, drives around in a convertible
with his American friend Bruce, taking in all the sights of Hollywood. Later, the Old World and the new socialist order replace capitalist glitter when Bruce
visits Felix in West Berlin, and they decide to take the day trip to the East.
During the trip, Felix meets Thomas, an East Berliner. Their only time together is when Felix comes ro the East for a day trip, forced to return by midnight.
As the trips across the border become more and more
frequent, suspicion is aroused and
one day a border guard asks Felix
to step into an examination room
where he is told to strip for
closer inspection to see if any
smuggling is going on.
Frustrated, the couple plan to
meet in Prague where they
can at least spend a whole
evening together and
hopefully plan Thomas'
escape to the West.
-San Francisco Fest

The East is Red
Directors: Ching Siu-Tung and Raymond Lee
Hong Kong 7993 35mm 95 mins.
in Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles
A fantastically choreographed, gender-lUck Kung Fu period piece, this sequel to Swordsman II scans
straight in with a blink-and-you'll-miss-it recap of its prequel. The film's protagonist, Asia the
Invincible vacillates between hero and villain throughout the film. Asia's gender and sexual orientation
are equally complex.
Self-castrated to gain Kung Fu powers, Asia (played by the srunning actress, Brigitte Lin) is still referred to as male. An apparent attraction to Officer Koo (Yu Rongguang)
is quickly dispelled, and the beautiful Snow (played by actress Joey Wang) emerges as Asia's true love. Snow has been waiting for Asia to
return ever since Asia fell to death on the Black Cliff. "Wherever you go I will follow," Snow vows to Asia. Snow has continued to lead the Sun
Moon Sect in Asia's absence. Asia at last returns, and, in a moment of bitter cruelty, rejects Snow who becomes virtually catatonic in her
desolation over this lost love. As Officer Koo asserts his love for Snow, Snow continues to assert her love for Asia. Asia returns once again,
declaring undying love for Snow, and in a fantastic concluding battle wins Snow away from Koo.
Time, space, gravity, narrative continuity, narrative conceptions about good and evil and character identity are all shifting, ambiguous
threads in the world oIThe East is Red - a world governed by an other-worldly set of rules. In other words, ifyou can't keep up with the
stoty, just let it go.
Played out against the conflicts of the Ming Dynasty, the film featuces spectacular land and sea battle sequences among the Hans, the Sun
Moon Sect, the Spaniards and the Japanese Ninjas. These abundantly violent, wildly choreographed and edited battles are highlighted by
Asia's flying needles and by the protagonists' ability to fly like superhero acrobats as they fight. There's also one vety hot lesbian love
scene. And although Asia is referred to as male, the character is played by a woman. There's no denying the relationship between Snow
and Asia, and in the film's queer logic one can't help but read Asia the Invincible as the first tcanssexuallesbian superhero.
Rock Hudson Home Movies
Director: Mark Rappaport
USA 7992 video 62 mins,
As many critics have pointed out, Rock Hudson made movies which look different in the light of his sexuality. The melodramas - like All That Heaven
Allows and Magnificent Obsession - lack heterosexual conviction, and the comedies - Pillow Talk, A Very Special Favor - have him pretending to be gay.
In scenarios devised by those who knew Rock was gay he was ceaselessly thrust into compromising, ambiguous situations.
In Mark Rappaport's new tape Rock Hudson Home Movies, Rock, played by a Rock-alike, journeys through an array of cleverly-edited clips and 'fesses up to
the homosexual connotations. This new Rock is more militant than the old, and he nevet fails to point out a 90's way oflooking at his pre-60's persona. The
result is a dizzying, smart-ass, high-wire comedy about Hollywood and homosexuality.
