SPENCE, THE
FILM-MAKER
WITH THE
CAMERA EYE
Rob Spence is a filmmaker who calls
himself the “Eyeborg.” After losing
sight in his right eye at age 9 by
incorrectly shooting a shotgun, Spence
decided 26 years later to have his
sightless eye removed and replaced
with a digital camera.
After sharing his initial eye camera
back in 2011, Spence has gotten major
upgrades to the design.
While the early model clearly looked
like a mass of electronics in his eye
socket, Spence’s
new camera looks
just like a regular
eye prosthesis. But
behind the facade is
a working camera
with a built-in
micro radio-frequency transmitter.
The camera isn’t wired to Spence’s
nerves, so it doesn’t do the duties of a
real eye, but it does record 3-minutes of
video at a time (the time limit is due to
overheating). Spence can monitor the
eye’s “live view” through a handheld

Jio‘s new JioPhone on 21 July. The
JioPhone, is very unlike your iPhone
when it comes to price, but it is
feature-packed nonetheless and more
importantly, comes with 4G VoLTE
support.
At the event, it was also announced
that the Reliance Jio JioPhone, would
start shipping from the first week of
September this year and pre-orders
for the same will commence from 24
August.
The bookings are on
a first-come, first-serve
basis and can be done
either via the MyJio
app, the Jio website, or
across Reliance Digital
stores, starting 24
August.
As for the price, the
phone will be available
free of cost. Jio will
ask customers to pay
a security deposit of Rs 1,500 for three
years. The same deposit is refundable
upon returning the JioPhone after
three years of use.
In terms of specifications, the device
features a 2.4-inch QVGA display along
with an SD card slot. It also includes
FM Radio. The company will also be
adding NFC support to the JioPhone.

button which when pressed would send
a message to near and dear ones in case
the phone user is in distress.

Spence is now working with his
development team on getting the
camera to record his life for hours
at a time. Once that happens — he
estimates that it will this year —
Spence plans to use the eye for more
serious documentary film projects that
are shot from his exact point of view.

Gaming Console
In Two Decades
Atari has revealed the design of its
much anticipated ‘Ataribox’ almost
a month after the it confirmed that
it is working on the gaming console.
‘Ataribox’ is the first gaming console
that the company has worked on in over
two decades. The company revealed the
design in a newsletter after the amount
of the feedback that it received when it
first teased the product.
Atari pointed out that the new
console is inspired by the classic design
elements that the company has used
in past products. The renders of the
device point towards a ‘smooth design’
where ribs seamlessly flow around the
body along with a front panel that will
be made from glass or wood. The front
will also come with an Atari logo (apart
from the indicator lights) that will make
it glow.

Mozilla is
ending updates
for Firefox on
Windows Xp
and Windows
Vista. The
last supported
version of the popular browser on the
older operating systems by Microsoft
will be Firefox Version 52, according
to a post in the Firefox support site.
The supported operating systems by
Microsoft are now limited to Windows
7, Windows 8 and Windows 10. While
new features will not be released for
the older operating systems, Firefox
will continue to deliver security
patches till September 2017.

NEW DELHI: In the next few
years, India will face increasingly
sophisticated "destructive" cyber
threats as compared to the "disruptive"
attacks in the Indian cyberspace that
are currently adding up to 200 million
malware-related and 1,90,000 "unique"
intrusions in any given week.
India's cyber security chief Gulshan
Rai told Parliament's finance standing
committee recently that cyber threats
had evolved swiftly from viruses and
"nuisance" attacks in the early 2000s to
sophisticated malware and advanced
denial of service, and could pose the
risk of severely destructive attacks by
2020.
The government — the Centre
and states — is the main target of
cyber attacks, driven by motives
ranging from theft, espionage and
data extraction to counterfeiting. In
2015 and 2016, the government sector
accounted for 27% and 29% of all
cyber attacks, the chief of the Indian
computer emergency response team
(ICERT) informed the committee.
