Once again this year we have a
fantastic line up which is a diverse
blend of jazz, blues and everything
in between. For example if you like
a bit of Dixieland music mixed with
a bit of R&B then don’t miss the
legendary frontman from Manfred Mann,
Paul Jones with Digby Fairweather’s
Half Dozen; Alternatively, for a bit
of nostalgia, you will be surprised
how many songs you know, the
Chris Ingham Quartet featuring the
music of Hoagy Carmichael will
delight; for a bit of zany comedy
you must see Bob Kerr’s Whoopee
Band but they are not just fooling,
these guys are really brilliant jazz
musicians mixing Bonzo Dog, Spike
Jones and Pythonesque humour.
Elsewhere on the programme we
have the Red Stripe Band playing
in the Bay Hotel, Goodwick, which
should allow plenty of room for
dancing. All of this plus a full
programme of events in Ffwrn and
our intimate jazz cafe, Peppers, not
forgetting the Yacht Club and TS
Skirmisher. For five days the music
will keep going with the Aberjazz
Fringe in pubs all round the twin
towns of Fishguard and Goodwick
as well as slightly further afield.
This is carnival weekend so expect
a party atmosphere as the town
comes to life with the sound of live
music in the pubs and clubs and
busking in the streets.

brings you a non-stop show which will appeal to every
audience. It combines Paul Jones' legendary hits -
'Doo Wah Diddy' 'Pretty Flamingo' 'I've been a bad
bad boy' and more with the riveting jazz of Britain's
newest all-star band 'Digby Fairweather's Half Dozen',
teaming with Paul to bring you the immortal songs of
Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordan and
classics from the Great American Songbook.

THE RED STRIPE BAND
BOB KERR’S WHOOPEE BAND
Bob Kerr featured on trumpet and cornet
as a member of both the Bonzo Dog Doo-
Dah Band,and the New Vaudeville Band
before forming the Whoopee Band , possibly
the last of the great comedy jazz bands
that combine zany musical and visual
humour with lively jazz and impeccable
musicianship. Current members are
John ‘The Professor’ Percival Malcolm
Sked, Bert Lamb and Henri Harrison.

Aberjazz 2 years ago when they
preformed to a packed audience in
Ffwrn, this year they will be playing
in the ballroom in the Fishguard
Bay Hotel so there will be plenty of
dancing room.

THE CHRIS INGHAM QUARTET
will be celebrating the music of the
American composer Hoagy Carmichael.
Hoagy's many compositions from 1924
through to 1953 are surprisingly familiar
today, hits such as Stardust, How Little
We Know, Georgia on My Mind, Skylark,
Ole Buttermilk Sky and Lazy Bones.

ELEANOR MCEVOY
is coming to Theatr Gwaun as part
of her ‘Naked… Live’ tour across
Ireland, Spain, Germany, Australia,
Scotland, England and now Wales.
Eleanor McEvoy started her career
as a musician with The Irish National
Symphony Orchestra. However, it
was whilst playing with Mary Black
that she decided to develop her
own career. The album, ‘A Woman’s
Heart’ a compilation of songs by six
female Irish artists including Eleanor
McEvoy, remains one of the biggest
selling Irish albums of all time.
Eleanor is now well established on
the Irish music scene and frequently
tours the US. Naked Music is her
twelfth studio album.

THE SAM LEAK
TRIO is led by Londonbased
Jazz pianist Sam
Leak. He appeared at
Aberjazz a few years ago
with his band Aquarium.
A regular in Ronnie Scott’s
Sam this year he will be
appearing in a late night
gig in Peppers with his
trio, James Allsopp on
Reeds, Joshua Blackmore
on Drums, and Calum
Gourlay on Double Bass.
Jamie Cullum once described
Sam as one of ‘the
heavyweights of the British
Jazz scene’ and declared
himself as a ‘fan’ in his
regular BBC broadcast.

THE COLTRANE DEDICATION BAND
The music of John Coltrane is about the spirit of
that great movement in music between 1960 and
1967. This quintet brings his music into a 21st
century context with intense and spirited emotion,
pulling his music endlessly into the future.

BURUM is a Welsh jazz / folk fusion
band with Tomas Williams on trumpet,
Daniel Williams on tenor sax, Ceri Rhys
Matthews on pipes, wooden flute, Mark O

a set of traditional Welsh folk music with
jazz arrangements.

SUNJAY’s style has that natural
drift between folk and blues and both
camps have recognised his obvious flair.
There have been a clutch of award nominations,
including winning the Bath Festival
Young Performers Award. He also
made the final selection for the BBC’s

Awards 2014 and was also recognised
by the 2014 British Blues Awards.

AULD MAN’S BACCIE is a traditional acoustic blues duo playing early
Chicago Blues with a bit of Gospel, Roots and Americana. Davey Curtis on vocals
and guitar and Nick Philips on slide guitar.
DANIEL SMITH & SCOTT HANNAH are coming together to form a jazz
/ Blues / Boogie Woogie duo. Daniel Smith is a Dutch-Indonesian-Anglo-Scottish
musician, one of the best boogie woogie piano players in the world and he is
currently touring with jazz guitarist, Scott Hannah.

THE LIAM WARD BAND is an award winning
blues band from Swansea. One of the country’s
best harmonica players, Liam (why not come to his
workshop) will be joined on guitar by Matt Jones,
Martin Hill on bass and Gareth Davies on drums.
Guitarist STEVE MORRISON is a master of
open-chord tunings and he has a bottleneck technique
that is fluid, sweet and original. While blues music
has constantly inspired this musician his original
technique, often sounding like several instruments
at the same time combine with writing style that
create his own unique sound.

GLAS is the Welsh for blue, and that is
what you will get from this three piece Blues
band from the South Wales valleys town of
Blackwood. They'll get you hopping
combining the blues with a bit of rock &
roll, R&B and country.
THE VITALITY THREE play authentic
jazz/ragtime from the 1920s, Scott Joplin,
Jelly Roll Morton’s and the work of
luminaries such as Jimmy Lytell,
Barney Bigard and Omer Simeon. Another
unusual specialism is the captivating
down-home ‘washboard band’ repertoire
of Johnny Dodds and Jimmie O’Bryant.

The music of Pembrokeshire born singer/ song writer JODIE MARIE has a lightblues
and jazz-folk-edge recalling late-1960s singer-songwriters such as Carole King
and Joan Baez, though her main influence is Bonnie Raitt
LOWRI EVANS has become a regular at many UK festivals including Aberjazz, as
a Welsh bilingual singer songwriter. She has also recorded several CDs as well as being
played regularly on BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru.

We are delighted to have singer songwriter
LADY NADE back after a 2 year break.
Lady Nade has a truly unique voice that
is hard to pigeon-hole, with elements of
jazz, soul, folk and blues. Her debut
album, “Hard to Forget” was financed
using crowd funding in just 28 days.
BELLA COLLINS has become one
of our most popular regular artists ever
since she first appeared here in 2014.
She plays the guitar and sings the blues
and received some serious attention
(from no less than Paul Jones) on the release
of her album, "Late and Blue" last
September.
This will be the first time Aberjazz has
seen her playing with her five piece
band, so we are really looking forward
to that!
In 1972 LEBURN MADDOX was
playing with Jimmy Castor in the Jimmy
Castor Bunch whose million record seller,
Troglodyte (Cave Man) has been heavily
sampled in hip hop and dance music.
He recently appeared in the Tenby Blues
festival, where we found him, and his
cool funky sound is definitely not to be
missed.

One man band, ANDY TWYMAN blends blues with
humour and rock and roll to titillate your ears, mind
and toes. Having performed on BBC Three and Channel
4, Andy’s reputation is growing as a highly original
and entertaining act. KIZZY CRAWFORD’s truly
unique act is a mixture of funk, soul and folk music
performed in both English and Welsh. A Welsh speaker
from the Welsh valleys with Bajan heritage, 20 year old
Kizzy Crawford's solo career began just a few years ago.

the style of Hot Club of France. Fronted by an unusual
combination of clarinet, bass clarinet and vocals, in
several European languages, the unique and widely
appealing sound is delivered with a heartfelt irresistible
joie de vivre that will transport you through the jazz
clubs of 1930's Paris to the grand cafes of Europe and
South America.

THE HIDEAWAY TRIO are a popular local power trio led by Gareth Price
who has become a local guitar legend. Blues, soul and rock influenced by the
guitar legends of yesteryear such as Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Rory Gallagher,
BB King and Jimi Hendrix. THE BLUE HORIZON who were last here in
2015, are a trio playing electrifying blues rock with brilliant guitar licks, rugged
vocals, dynamic percussion and driving bass. They bring energy to classic covers
and their own original material gives a good time, party feel to performances.
Critically acclaimed Clement Regert's WILD CARD is a melting-pot of musical
ideas, fusing urban rhythms, Hard-bop and grooves with Latin and jazz attitude.
You can expect to hear their famous mix of Afro-jazz, hard-bop, samba and raw
funk numbers.

BENJAMIN BASSFORD was discovered by us two years ago
when he stood in at the very last minute for a blues artist who
couldn’t make it. He played in The Globe and had people dancing
in the street outside. He has since become one of the Aberjazz
favourites – a singer-songwriter and dynamic artist playing a solo
blues guitar, doused and nuanced in blues, roots, folk and country.
HOWLIN MAT last appeared at Aberjazz two years ago, where
he really entertained the audience with his blistering set of blues
songs and his stories. A blues artist with a sense of humour. His
hard rocking, boogie blues guitar and vocals guarantee an entertaining
part of the afternoon session.
REMI HARRIS was at last year’s Aberjazz festival and we just
had to bring him back quite simply because he is probably one of
the best young gypsy jazz guitarists playing in the country at the
moment; He is an exciting guitarist from the who's unique style
draws inspiration from Gypsy Swing, Jazz, Blues, Rock, Electronic
and World Music. He has toured worldwide as well as performing
at Buckingham Palace, Montreal Jazz Festival, BBC Proms at the
Royal Albert Hall with Jamie Cullum, on BBC 4 Television and live
on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 3.​ Described by Jamie Cullum as
an "incredible guitarist".

Thursday 24th August
The Steve Williams Trio will open the
festival in Ffwrn at around 3pm. The
first thing you will notice about this
trio is that there are four of them.
Since they last played in Ffwrn, they
have been joined by Sadie Jane on
vocals and they now perform many
of Sadie's choices. So you still get
the cafe jazz sound with the brilliant
guitar of Steve Williams, but with a
repertoire that includes the music of
modern female jazz artists such as
Caro Emerald, Amy Winehouse and
Imelda May. Then Daniel Smith and
Scott Hannah will treat us to a short
preview of their boogie woogie piano
and jazz guitar set.
There will be a performance from
the award-winning poet Joe Neal in
Peppers at 9pm. Born in Gwynedd
and now living in Wexford, Joe Neal
has appeared on television and radio
in Britain and Ireland, worked as
an actor and a journalist and writes
extensively on natural history and the
countryside and is “mad about jazz.”
He has published five collections
of poetry, his latest, The Next Blue
Note, was launched this summer.

Friday 25th August
The Saint City Jazz Band is in the
Yacht Club at 4pm. This is a local
trad jazz band that plays regularly
in the Royal Oak.
In Scleddau (just outside Fishguard),
Daisy B will be playing in the
charming Gate Inn at 9pm. Daisy
B are a local husband & wife duo
who play covers featuring Daisy's
bluesy voice.
Over in Goodwick you will find foot
stomping blues man Pistol Pete
Wearn in the Hope & Anchor at
9pm; raucous blues and Americana
with upbeat tunes, sung and played
on acoustic slide guitar.
Or if you are in a more thoughtful
mood, singer, songwriter & guitarist
Guy Maile in The Globe at 9pm, will
be playing a dylanesque mixture of
covers and his own compositions.

Saturday 25th August
Take an afternoon stroll down to Lower Town
Fishguard where you can catch Cardiff
based guitar duo, Bella Collins & Gareth
Evans playing in the Yacht Club at 1pm.
Anyone familiar with the Bella Collins
Band will want to see her playing guitar
and singing with jazz guitarist Gareth
Evans; a mixture of jazz & blues with a bit
of ska and soul.
In the centre of the town there is another
chance to see Guy Maile in Bennetts Navy
Inn at 2pm while the Saint City Jazz Band
are back again this time in the Royal Oak
at 3pm.
The evening session in Lower Town starts
with Andy Twyman in the Yacht Club at
5pm, then a short walk to the Ship Inn
for some gypsy jazz with The Hot Club of
Fenham from 7pm.
Back in Fishguard, at 5pm in BarFive, you
can chill to some jazzy blues with Bella
and Gareth, bar snacks and champagne;
Why not?
Pistol Pete Wearn will be playing once
more at 9pm in the Globe while on the
square the fabulous Stangs, three young
lads playing sixties covers plus some of
their own material in the Royal Oak from
9pm til late.
The Saint City Jazz Band will be playing
again at 9pm, this time out on the coast
road to St Davids in the Ship Inn in Trefin.
Sunday 26th August
In Peppers at 1pm Siriol and Talfan Jenkins, a young brother and sister duo, who
have been studying jazz at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff,
will give a performance on sax and piano.
Down on the quay in the Yacht Club, at 1pm there is a second chance to see the
Hot Club of Fenham. If you are feeling peckish, then pop up to Transition Cafe
to see Guy Maile. Get there early if you want some grub and the music starts at
4pm.
Over in Goodwick at 4pm Benjamin Bassford will be playing blues in the Rose &
Crown and at 4:30pm in the Fishguard Bay Hotel, you can see the Freewheelers,
a traditional, 40's style jazz swing band.
Fans of Bella Collins can see her in later in the evening with the Bella Collins
Band in Royal Oak at 9pm. While outside Fishguard in Mathry, four piece R&B /
rock & roll band Crawlback will be playing at 9pm in the Farmers Arms

Boogie Woogie Piano Workshop
This will be split into two sessions of one hour each.
Any level welcome, but the second level will be at
a slightly higher level than the first.
There are only 8 spaces so booking is essential!
This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from a master of his genre.
Areas covered include - twelve bar blues, eight-bar blues, boogie woogie
left-hands, walking bass figures, blues introductions and endings, boogie
breaks, jazz chords, jazz sequences, the blues scale, improvisation,
technique, blues and jazz theory, composition and transposing.

This is a two hour workshop in which
participants can learn the dance techniques
involved in Lindy Hop ready for a weekend of
fabulous music to dance to.

Songwriting Workshop with Lady Nade
Discover your inner creative writer, learn how to
compose songs from scratch and create inspirational
lyrics from an award winning songwriter and industry
professional.

Party
This year the legendary Aberjazz Party, will be started by DJ Paul Murphy
who has been credited with inventing the UK Jazz dance scene and who Giles
Peterson called “The Godfather”.
Regulars will remember The Chalk Outlines from last year’s party. It is always
party time when this 9 piece ska band is playing; expect fast paced two-tone
ska with Balkan, Latin and Hip-Hop Influences.
Eugene "Uncle Funk" French will be spinning uptown beats for downtown
freaks on 7" 45 vinyl treats.
Aberjazz would like to thank everyone who supports the festival; our sponsors,
our venues, our advertisers, our volunteers and most of all our audiences,
without whom this festival would not exist.
This year Aberjazz will be celebrating its 14th year, as well as being 50 years
since the “summer of love” and Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,
so to mark the occasion many of our bands will be slipping in the occasional
Beatles song, in their own style.
Regular Aberjazzers are aware that this festival is run by members of the local
community on a not for profit basis. We hope you enjoy our taste in music,
which is very loosely a mixture of jazz and blues with a touch of ska, folk,
rock and just about anything that we like and we hope you like too.
The prices at our ticketed events are kept as low as possible thanks to our
sponsors and the support of local businesses who advertise in our programme.
Children under the age of 16 (if accompanied by adults) are free to all our
concerts in Ffwrn up until 9pm.
The Aberjazz Fringe events and workshops are not ticketed but we do ask you
to give generously to our bucketeers, as these donations are essential in order
to keep the festival going.
