“When you pray…”
(Jesus, Mathew 6:5)
Jesus had an expectation that prayer happens, because it is an
important part of being a disciple, of being in relationship with
our Heavenly Father.
This booklet is designed to help us pray together for the Glory
of God to reveal itself, in our communities, through the work of
St Paul’s Reformed Church.
Whether you can gather with others and use it as springboard
in to your prayer time together, or when you pray alone. Either
way let’s concentrate on being a church that follows Christ
instruction… Let’s pray!
Monday
Praise
A hymn, song, canticle, and/or
1
O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
2
Out of the mouths of babes and infants
you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,
to silence the enemy and the avenger.
3
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have established;
4
what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals [a] that you care for them?
5
Yet you have made them a little lower than God, [b]
and crowned them with glory and honor.
6
You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet,
7
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
8
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
9
O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.
Closing Prayer
Lord, thou hast given us thy word for a light to shin upon our
path; grant us so to meditate on that Word, and to follow its
teaching,
that we may find in it the light that shine more and more
until the perfect day;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
(Jerome, C 342-420)
Tuesday
Praise
A hymn, song, canticle, and/or
1
O God, you are my God, I seek you,
my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
2
So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
beholding your power and glory.
3
Because your steadfast love is better than life,
my lips will praise you.
4
So I will bless you as long as I live;
I will lift up my hands and call on your name.
5
My soul is satisfied as with a rich feast,[a]
and my mouth praises you with joyful lips
6
when I think of you on my bed,
and meditate on you in the watches of the night;
7
for you have been my help,
and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy.
8
My soul clings to you;
your right hand upholds me.
9
But those who seek to destroy my life
shall go down into the depths of the earth;
Closing Prayer
Look upon us, O Lord, and let all the darkness of our souls
vanish before the beams of thy brightness.
Fill us with holy love, and open to us the treasures of thy wisdom.
All our desire is known unto thee, therefore perfect what thou
hast begun, and what thy Spirit has awakened us to ask in
prayer. We seek thy face, turn thy face unto us and show us thy
glory. Then shall our longing be satisfied, and our peace shall be
perfect.
(Augustine, 354 - 430)

Saturday
Praise
A hymn, song, canticle, and/or
1
As a deer longs for flowing streams,
so my soul longs for you, O God.
2
My soul thirsts for God,
for the living God.
When shall I come and behold
the face of God?
3
My tears have been my food
day and night,
while people say to me continually,
“Where is your God?”
4
These things I remember,
as I pour out my soul:
how I went with the throng,
and led them in procession to the house of God,
with glad shouts and songs of thanksgiving,
a multitude keeping festival.
5
Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my help 6 and my God.
