MEDIA STATEMENT: BLUEPOINT LOUVER FAÇADE SYSTEM Paul Raff Studio has designed a unique residential complex in Thailand with remarkable green design strategies. Its most novel feature is its Louver Facade System which was born from a simple idea to maximize landscape views while maintaining privacy for residents. Its dynamic sweeping forms echo local vernacular influences while functioning as shading system which can be adapted to any new building. This system reduces solar heat gain which in tropical climates - home to 41% of the world’s population- massively reduces energy consumption. It is a powerful example of how Canadian architects can have a positive global impact.
BLUEPOINT LOUVER FAÇADE SYSTEM The Bluepoint Louver Facade System was developed as part of a multi-unit housing project in Phuket Thailand. The project context required a unique response that could deliver the following: • to maximize panoramic views to the ocean • to maintain privacy relative to site adjacencies • to minimize solar heat gain in a highly glazed façade (>60%) • to maximize durability and resilience in a demanding tropical environment The Louver Facade System forms the outermost layer of an exterior wall assembly and consists of fixed vertical louvers . The system’s particular configuration permits geometric variability across the façade impacting both the percentage and orientation of optical and solar permeability. The configuration presented here is particular to the buildings it was designed for; however it is, capable of application to a range of conditions, building types, and orientations by virtue of its systemic flexibility. As an external shading system, it has broad applicability and offers particular advantages in tropical climates. In picturesque tropical locations, large areas of glazing, deployed to deliver powerful connections to landscape, pose a significant problem by contributing to excess heat gain, thereby increasing demands for energy consumption related to cooling. This has frequently been addressed with energy-intensive air conditioning, and with interior shading strategies that permit energy to enter the envelope. The Bluepoint Louver Façade System provides an exterior shading solution that limits solar energy from entering the building envelope, while offering a range of innovations that optimize views to the exterior while making it particularly suitable for application within tropical environments. 1. SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT: The Louver Façade System is a unique exterior shading system product whose design and delivery: • permits a highly flexible façade system allowing multiple design options • utilizes emerging ‘green’ materials in new construction applications • deploys a lightweight distributed system of structural supports • involves academic and industry partners in the development of new sustainable research • will lead to the delivery of a new sustainable building product to emerging markets • advances contract document and schedule methods as a precise and transparent tool • affords a high degree of applicability to other projects in similar contexts • facilitates the direct involvement of Canadian design in distant project applications Details of specific innovations are elaborated below: i. Unique adaptation of existing green building technologies as a system The façade system’s primary component, the louvers, are made from a wood composite extrusion comprised of waste materials and by-products that are produced locally, rapidly, and cost-effectively. These are supported by the two other major components of the system: steel tabs and support rails which are laser-cut and break-formed and shop-welded. This process is also locally executed, rapid, and cost-effective, and permits the use of lighter gauge sheet steel, which has less embodied energy in its manufacturing process and by virtue of reduced overall mass as compared to structural steel shapes.
