The 2nd and 3rd September sees the second
year of the Cornish Yarn Festival following its
successful launch at Marazion in 2016. It is a
festival of wool and crafts for those who like to
be creative.
This year’s festival will be held at the Lugger
Hotel on the promenade of Penzance, the perfect
venue to relax, enjoy the sea views and meet
with like-minded people. You can also peruse
the variety of stalls and pick up those essential
In the seaside town of Zennor stands St Senara’s
Church. Among the aisles sits a wooden chair
thought to be over 500 years old, with a carving of
a mermaid (or merrymaid), etched into its side.
Local legend maintains that the carving is a depiction of
an actual event in the Parish’s history. Matthew Trewhella
was a gifted chorister whose beautiful voice is said to have
lured a mermaid named Morveren from the seas.
Legend has it that Morveren would disguise herself by
covering her hair with a net and wearing a long dress that
hid her tail. She would sneak into the back of the church
each Sunday to hear Matthew sing, spellbound by his
voice, and would disappear before the end of the song to
avoid being seen.
CORNISH YARN FESTIVAL
bargain offers. There will be demonstrations
and workshop opportunities based around
wool crafts. Demonstrations include weaving,
spinning, carding and machine knitting and you
can also learn the arts of crochet and knitting.
Admission is free all weekend, there are
refreshments available and the festival runs from
10am to 4pm on both days.
For further information, you can call
01736 874455. www.harbour-wools.co.uk
THE MERMAID OF ZENNOR
Morveren remained undetected by the parishioners until
one Sunday; As Matthew sang a particularly lovely song
she couldn’t help but let out a long and sweet sigh. Her
exclaim was heard by Matthew and as he looked up the
net slipped from her hair exposing her beauty to him.
The mermaid fled, but tripped and was caught by
Matthew. Realising the congregation were in pursuit
Matthew ran into the sea with the beautiful Morweren
and disappeared never to be seen again.
It is said that Matthew and Morweren live happily beneath
the waves and that to this day they sing together giving
warning to fishermen of bad storms approaching or
to notify them of fine weather. On a warm and calm
Summer evening if you listen carefully you may just hear
their beautiful tones emanating from the ocean.
THE BOATSHED PENZANCE
Fresh Fish and a Foodie Favourite
Situated in a prime location on
the harbourside of Penzance The
Boatshed Café Bar is a popular
choice for locals and visitors alike.
Boasting a lively yet relaxed atmosphere
the ethos of The Boatshed centres around
fresh flavours and locally caught seafood.
Priding itself on a menu derived from
fresh locally sourced ingredients there is
something to suit all tastes.
Well known for their popular chargrilled
West Country steaks and delicious fish
dishes (The whole Seabass grilled with
garlic, ginger and coriander and finished
with a citrus butter is a firm favourite)
it is the perfect location to enjoy a
Summer evening.
Whether you are looking for a light lunch,
three course evening meal or simply a
coffee and piece of delicious homemade
cake The Boatshed can accommodate.
The restaurant can also cater for private
functions of up to a hundred people and
has a license until 1am.
“We were in Penzance for the Golowan
Festival and looking for somewhere to eat
on the Sunday night when we spotted the
Boatshed. Once we saw fresh Dover Sole
on the menu we were hooked. That evening
we had one of the best fish meals ever,
the Dover Sole was cooked to perfection
without any of the fancy trimmings that
seem to be the norm these days. The service
from Louise and the rest of the staff was
excellent, friendly but efficient. If you are
ever in Penzance check out the Boatshed
and enjoy a wonderful meal.”
Prussia Cove, a picturesque spot in
Penwith just East of Cudden Point
has an intriguing past; notorious for
its gangs of Smugglers and Wreckers.
Originally known as ‘Slab Cove’ or ‘Porthleah’
in Cornish, but later known as Prussia Cove
after its infamous Eighteenth-Century Smuggler
John Carter.
John was nicknamed ‘The King Of Prussia’ as
a boy as he was said to resemble Frederick The
Great - the King of Prussia. The area later took
on his nickname and became ‘Prussia Cove’ in
recollection of his smuggling exploits.
John Carter and his brothers Harry and Charles
rented the cove and are considered to be among
some of the most famous of all Cornish Smugglers.
The Carter family embarked upon their
smuggling antics during a period in history where
wars raged between America and France leaving
seaborne trade wide open to criminal activity.
Prussia Cove is made up of three of smaller
coves; Kings Cove, Pisky’s Cove and Bessie’s
Cove (named after Bessy Bussow who kept the
Ale house).
PRUSSIA COVE
A Smuggler’s Paradise
Sheltered by the rocky headland their sandy
beaches were ideal for landings and their caves
perfect for storing smuggler’s contraband.
John Carter built a large house which acted as a
hideout, directly into a remote cliff above one of the
large caves. Many of the cove’s caves were reputed to
be connected to the house via secret passages.
Carter also built a discreet harbour which could
only be seen by leaning over the edge of the
clifftop above. The Carter brother’s smuggling
success derived from the fact that they owned
two vessels, had extensive knowledge of both
the Cornish and French coasts and their house
boasted vast cellars, lofts and salt houses perfect
for storing their wares.
Despite being a Smuggler John Carter was a
well-respected member of the community.
He was described as a fair and honest man; a
particular example of this being the time that in
his absence a recent cargo of tea was confiscated
by Excise officers. Carter broke into the Customs
House one night with his men to regain his
goods, but was careful to take only his contraband,
not touching a single thing confiscated
from other people.
Over the years The Carters led a colourful and
successful smuggling life which eventually came
to an end with John selling the house in 1803
at a time when the cove was evolving. A copper
mine was opened at the site and coal for the
mine was landed in place of smuggled goods. In
1825 the building of a Coastguards Station put
an end to the days of smuggling at Prussia Cove.
To this day you can still see the grooves in the
rocks that were made to guide the wheels of the
smugglers carts. These tracks were said to lead
into a cave housing a secret passageway which
connected the beach and the Ale House; the
perfect destination for the contraband alcohol!
Remains of The Ale House still stand and are
part of what is now Cliff Cottage.
As well as boasting a fascinating history Prussia
Cove is a stunning area of Penwith perfect for a
day on the beach. It is renowned for being one
of the best places in the area for snorkelling, and
whether Summer or Winter its scenery makes it
a captivating place to walk.
To be able to explore the smugglers caves, literally
walking in the footsteps of the Smugglers
brings this landmark and its fascinating history
to life. I guess you could say that John Carter,
literally left his mark on the area and set his
smuggling history in stone!
Sand Clay Keepsakes
KID’S CRAFT CORNER
Keep the kids occupied this Summer Holiday!
This craft uses real sand to create a clay which
can be cooked to make lovely keepsakes and
models. We are going to explain how to make
handprint keepsakes; You can decorate them
with shells and pebbles from a trip to the
beach… A unique memory of your holiday.
YOU WILL NEED:
• 1 and a ½ cups of plain flour (all purpose)
• 1 cup of warm water
• 1 and ¼ cups of salt
This will make four balls of the clay, perfect
for four children, but can be halved if only two
children are taking part.
Method
• Mix the sand, flour and salt in bowl, slowly adding
warm water, stirring throughout with a large
spoon. (Measurements of the dry ingredients can
make a difference to the stickiness/ dryness of the
dough so add water carefully. If mixture feels too
sticky add more flour or sand)
• Once combined remove from bowl and begin to
knead on a lightly floured surface. (It should take
less than a minute to merge in to a pliable ball
similar in feel to play dough or salt dough.)
• Roll, cut, and air or oven dry the clay in the same
way as salt dough from this point forward. ( I split
the ball into four pieces and roll them one by one,
into circular shapes about 2 cm thick).
• Roll directly on to a large baking parchment sheet
• Once dough is rolled into circles ask the children
to push their hand into the centre of their piece
pushing each finger down firmly, then carefully
remove child’s hand to reveal their handprint in
the dough.
• Using small shells from beach trips and party craft
supplies children can decorated around the borders
turning these into real beach keepsakes treasures.
• Place into the oven at 120 degrees Celsius (approx
250 F) to dry out for around 4 hours. The sand
dough will dry hard at differing times depending
on the thickness of the dough discs. (It is important
that they are not too thick as this will mean
that they remain a little doughy in the middle. If
you find they are hard on the top but not underneath,
take them out and gently turn them over,
putting them back into the oven for another hour
or two to harden the underside.)
• You can add a clay glaze over the top to seal them
and/or give a shiny effect, or leave as they are for a
more beach like look and feel.
CRAFTING FOR ADULTS
Because it’s not always about the kids!
Make Your Own Pebble Mat
A really simple craft idea with amazing results!
YOU WILL NEED:
• A Rubber mat
• Pebbles
• A tub of contact cement
Method
• Apply the contact cement to the mat a patch at a time.
• Place pebbles on to cement a patch at a time; if you don’t want
the placement of the pebbles to look too uniformed start in the
middle. If you prefer a uniformed look add the pebbles in lines.
• Leave to dry for at least 24 hours before walking on the mat.
Other Variations:
• Cut the rubber mat into long slim rectangles before adding the
pebbles to make a table runner.
• Section the mat into placemats by drawing around a placemat
then cutting out the shapes (use pebbles of the same thickness
for these).
• Make coasters (use pebbles of the same thickness for these).
• Make a Trivet (use pebbles of the same thickness for this).
You could paint and varnish the pebbles before adding to the mat
for a more personalised effect.
Born in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire in 1978, Artist Matt Lincoln lived in
South Wales until 2008 where he indulged in his passions for fly fishing and
water; the subject of many of his paintings.
THE MINACK THEATRE
The theatre carved from a cliff
MAMBO AND PIXIE’S
Furry Friend of the month
One of West Cornwall’s most prevalent landmarks,
the origins of The Minack Theatre in
Porthcurno tell a fascinating tale.
Following the First World War a lady by the name of
Rowena Cade moved to Cornwall along with her Mother
and built a house on land at Minack Point.
In 1929 a group of village players staged a production
of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ in a
nearby meadow at Crean, repeating the performance
the following year. When the players decided that their
next performance was to be ‘The Tempest’, Rowena
Cade offered her garden by the sea as venue.
With the help of her Gardener Billy Rawlings, Rowena
constructed rough seating and a terrace by hauling
materials from the house and from the beach below via
the windy path to the cliffside.
In 1932 ‘The Tempest’ was performed, with the sea as
the play’s dramatic backdrop it was a rousing success.
Vowing to improve the theatre Rowena, with the help of
Billy Rawlings and his friend Charles Angove worked
tirelessly during the Winters throughout her life so that
others could perform through the Summer months.
In 1955 the Minack’s first dressing rooms were built. In
the 1970s, the theatre was managed by Lawrence Shove
a renowned British sound recordist.
Rowena worked on improving her beloved theatre well
into her eighties, and over the years developed skills
such as decorating cement surfaces with the tip of a
screwdriver, etching beautiful Celtic designs and lettering
in to them before the cement hardened and dried.
The theatre was registered as a Charitable Trust in 1976
and is now run by a local management team.
The Minack Theatre truly was a labour of love for
Rowena, upon her death it was discovered she had even
left sketches suggesting ways in which the theatre could
be covered in rainy weather.
Despite Rowena’s death in 1983 at the age of eightynine
the Cade family continued their involvement in
the theatre; the General Manger of the Minack in 2015
was married to Rowena’s great niece.
The Minack Theatre is a marvel, and all who visit should
look around in awe and remember the extraordinary
woman who almost single-handedly fashioned this wonder
from a Cornish cliff-face over eighty years ago.
About Me
Hi there! I’m Barney and I arrived at the Centreoriginally
in 2015 as my owner had sadly passed
away. I found a new home but have had to come
back to the Centre recently as my new owner has
been taken poorly and can no longer care for me.
Therefore, I’m looking for a new home which I
hope will be my forever one. I’m 7 years old and,
although I have previously lived with another cat,
I am happier as an only cat really. I like to spend
a lot of time outside but I am also a sociable boy
and am happy being around people and having a
fuss once I know you. I haven’t lived with children
before but I would probably adapt to being in a
home with older children but I’m afraid I’m not a
big fan of dogs so couldn’t live with them.
NEWLYN FISH FESTIVAL
A celebration of the sea
August Bank Holiday Monday sees the much anticipated 28th annual
Newlyn Fish Festival…one of the biggest and best celebrations
of the sea, seafood and fishing in the country.
In its history, the festival has donated £265,000 to The Fishermen’s Mission
to benefit the Cornish Fishermen who are constantly at risk from the elements
as they land fish for our plates.
The 2016 event alone resulted in a donation of £15,000 to The Mission as
well as helping local youth groups.
The festival will include fish cookery
demonstrations, displays, two music
stages, luggers in the harbour, trawlers
racing, gigs sprinting, children’s
rides, entertainment and a variety of
fabulous food to enjoy as well as local
art and craft stalls to explore.
Celebrations begin on the Sunday,
the eve of the festival as the fishing
community come together to acknowledge
the work of the festival’s
patron, the Fisherman’s Mission who
work tirelessly to serve the needs of
our local fisherman be they financial,
mental or physical in the event on
infirmity, misfortune or accident.
At 6.45pm on the Sunday you can join the Fish Festival crew on Newlyn
Green as they gather together with Fishermen’s Mission staff to lay the Newlyn
Fish Festival wreath of remembrance at the feet of ‘Tom’ Newlyn’s memorial to
all those fishermen lost at sea.
The wreath laying is followed by The Fisherman’s Mission’s traditional
‘Blessing of the Fleet’ remembrance service which take place in the marquee
in the harbour at 7pm.
Why not make an evening of it on the Sunday which also sees The Centre
on Chywoone Hill host ‘Last Night of the Cornish Proms’; a celebration of
Cornish songs. Entry is £6 and includes a pasty and a cup of tea.
HARRIS BEGLEY
Enjoy Peace of Mind In Your Retirement
Tap Into The Value Of Your Home
And Release A Cash Sum with an
Equity Release Plan
Your retirement years should be a time to relax
and really enjoy life. A time when you are able to
devote more time to hobbies and interests, spend
time with family and friends, improve your home
and garden or even travel the world on a dream
holiday cruise.
Your Home Is Your Asset
Historically your retirement would have been
funded by your personal and state pension, plus
any other applicable state benefits, investments
or savings you may have accrued. However, the
economic climate over recent years has put a dent
in some of those expectations for many, creating
money worries when approaching retirement. A
well-chosen Equity Release scheme can alleviate
these worries and pave the way to a comfortable
retirement... So, if you’re a homeowner, aged
over 55 and looking for additional funds, then an
Equity Release plan may be your solution.
Our Equity Release Advisors are qualified experts
who can provide you with professional, impartial
advice in order to plan a brighter retirement,
specifically designed for you.
Releasing Cash From Your Home
There are a number of different Equity Release
options available which allow you to raise
funds based on the value of your home, as a
Lifetime Loan.
With some Equity Release plans you are not
required to pay off any capital or interest at
any point during your lifetime. Effectively, the
provider of the loan reclaims the capital (plus
any accumulated interest) through the eventual
sale of your property, once the final plan-holder
dies or moves into long-term care.
Qualified Retirement Planning Specialists
As qualified members of the Equity Release
Council, Harris Begley are retirement planning
specialists who can guide you through the
options available to you. There are a number
of areas that need to be considered to identify
if Equity Release is right for you and if at
any point we don’t feel that Equity Release is
suitable, we will advise against it and suggest
alternative solutions.
To book your FREE, no obligation initial
appointment, please contact Harris Begley
on Tel 01736 366550 or
Key Factors of Equity Release
• You must be aged 55 or over, have a property worth at least
£75,000 and be able to release a minimum of £15,000.
• You must use the cash sum released to pay off any existing
outstanding mortgage.
• You retain legal ownership of your home.
• You can safeguard a percentage of your home’s value with an
inheritance guarantee.
• You’re protected with a no negative equity guarantee, so you, or
your estate, will never pay back more than you receive from the
eventual sale of your home.
• There are no monthly repayments. Instead, interest is added
to the loan each year. The loan and interest are repaid in full,
usually from the sale of your home, when you die or go into
long-term care.
• Releasing equity can affect your tax position and eligibility for
welfare benefits.
• Equity Release isn’t suitable if you have savings you could use
instead, or would prefer to sell all, or part of your home, or
downsize.
• It will reduce the amount of inheritance you can leave.
Equity Release is a lifetime mortgage or home reversion scheme.
