Looking Back, Looking Forward<br />
In this report, we thank YOU for your tremendous support of<br />
Redwood Day School during the <strong>2013</strong>–2014 and 2014–<strong>2015</strong> school<br />
years. Thank you for being part of our community, for believing in<br />
our mission, and for supporting our vision as we work together to<br />
bring our dreams to reality.<br />
Back in <strong>2013</strong>, we celebrated our 50th Anniversary in the midst of our<br />
most successful project to date—the expansion of our Middle School.<br />
Expansion provided new academic, social and emotional opportunities<br />
for our students. It also fostered deep collaboration among our<br />
Middle School Faculty, and enabled us to offer new programs such as<br />
robotics and Design Thinking. Expansion strengthened and solidified<br />
Redwood Day School’s position in Oakland, and interest in our<br />
school continues to soar today!<br />
Expansion also encouraged creative thinking about the future of our campus, and the best ways to create<br />
facilities that allow us to innovate and offer cutting edge programs. At our 50th Anniversary Celebration<br />
in April 2014, we kicked off the Here We Grow Capital Campaign to support construction of a brand<br />
new 10,000+ sq. ft. facility and the repurposing of existing facilities to better meet our needs. Today,<br />
the building is going up before our eyes, a testimony to the unwavering commitment and dedication of<br />
our community. When the project is complete in September 2016, RDS will have three state-of-the-art<br />
science labs, an innovation lab (EPI Center), a new K–5 art studio, new Middle School core classrooms,<br />
an outdoor performance stage, and a new music recording studio and rehearsal space.<br />
Over the past two years, we have also experienced tremendous program growth with the implementation<br />
of Math in Focus, Writer’s Workshop, a new K–5 science lab, new K–8 Spanish curriculum, new<br />
technology courses in the Middle School, and equity and inclusion groups. As the footprint of our<br />
school grows, our administration, faculty and staff continue to innovate and bring new ideas to fruition<br />
to benefit our students.<br />
Gifts to Redwood Day School are essential to thinking creatively about our present and our future.<br />
Your donations enable us to be at the forefront of education, to provide an exceptional program, to be<br />
reflective of our community, and to offer meaningful professional development for our faculty and staff.<br />

A Message from the Board<br />
The <strong>2013</strong>–2014 and the 2014–<strong>2015</strong> school years were exciting for Redwood<br />
Day School as we reached full enrollment, implemented new academic<br />
initiatives and launched our Here We Grow Capital Campaign for our new<br />
campus building projects. The building includes educational spaces that<br />
are mission consistent and representative of the creative, dynamic thinking<br />
processes we want students to engage in as learners.<br />
Redwood Day School is in a very strong financial position. We own our<br />
land outright, and have been able to responsibly grow our program through<br />
increased revenue realized through Middle School expansion. Our annual<br />
fund parent and guardian participation has grown steadily to 99% and our<br />
Board of Trustees and Faculty/Staff have reached 100% participation every<br />
year. Through your continued support we are poised to further capitalize on<br />
our strengths, and continue to position Redwood Day School as a leader in<br />
K–8 innovative education in Oakland and the larger East Bay.<br />

Every Redwood Day School parent and guardian is a member of the RDSPGA. Our close-knit<br />
community of families and educators continues to stand out as an incredibly active, dynamic and<br />
inclusive group, focused on the children at the center of our mission. The RDSPGA exists to:<br />
• Build community and organize activities that enrich the Redwood Day School<br />
experience for students, parents, faculty and staff;<br />
• Promote volunteer opportunities, parent education programs, and school events<br />
that foster community and encourage participation;<br />
• Support the School’s mission, philosophy and strategic plan;<br />
• Facilitate communication between the parents and guardians and the School; and<br />
• Sponsor fundraising initiatives to augment the School’s resources.<br />
The RDSPGA made a smooth transition from being a separate organization to a department of the<br />
school. In this new relationship, the RDSPGA not only carries out its own mission, but also works in<br />
strong partnership with the administration to better serve our community. The RDSPGA continues to<br />
have an energetic board of directors and enthusiastic committee chairs. We want to acknowledge the<br />
many volunteers who plan, coordinate and staff various events throughout the year.<br />
As we look forward, we want to encourage parents, guardians and our entire community to stay<br />
involved supporting our children, the faculty and staff. Even if individually we give a small amount<br />
of time, together we can make a big difference!<br />

18 HONORING 2014–<strong>2015</strong>
Construction began in June <strong>2015</strong> and<br />
is well underway to be ready for the<br />
fall of 2016. The building is a physical<br />
manifestation of our educational<br />
philosophy that all disciplines are<br />
interconnected. The spaces are<br />
designed to be flexible and adaptable,<br />
to encourage creative, interdisciplinary<br />
thinking. All of the spaces in the<br />
new facility are connected in way<br />
that explicitly teaches children that<br />
interdisciplinary thinking is the key<br />
to success in the future. Upon<br />
completion of this project, Redwood<br />
Day School will be one of the only<br />
Redwood Day School Board of Trustees Day <strong>2015</strong>–16 visit to the<br />
construction site.<br />
K–8 schools in Oakland and the East Bay with a facility thoughtfully designed to encourage<br />
development of essential skills that we know our children will need to be successful in the future.<br />

Our 50th Anniversary<br />
Celebrating our 50th Anniversary, we brought together generations of Redwood Day students,<br />
families, faculty, staff, and friends to honor our wonderful history and look forward to our<br />
exciting future. It is hard to believe that our school started with twelve students in 1963, and<br />
has since blossomed to what it is today—a thriving model of exemplary independent education<br />
rooted in a deep connection between engaging academics and social and emotional growth.<br />
