Looking Back, Looking Forward
In this report, we thank YOU for your tremendous support of
Redwood Day School during the 2013–2014 and 2014–2015 school
years. Thank you for being part of our community, for believing in
our mission, and for supporting our vision as we work together to
bring our dreams to reality.
Back in 2013, we celebrated our 50th Anniversary in the midst of our
most successful project to date—the expansion of our Middle School.
Expansion provided new academic, social and emotional opportunities
for our students. It also fostered deep collaboration among our
Middle School Faculty, and enabled us to offer new programs such as
robotics and Design Thinking. Expansion strengthened and solidified
Redwood Day School’s position in Oakland, and interest in our
school continues to soar today!
Expansion also encouraged creative thinking about the future of our campus, and the best ways to create
facilities that allow us to innovate and offer cutting edge programs. At our 50th Anniversary Celebration
in April 2014, we kicked off the Here We Grow Capital Campaign to support construction of a brand
new 10,000+ sq. ft. facility and the repurposing of existing facilities to better meet our needs. Today,
the building is going up before our eyes, a testimony to the unwavering commitment and dedication of
our community. When the project is complete in September 2016, RDS will have three state-of-the-art
science labs, an innovation lab (EPI Center), a new K–5 art studio, new Middle School core classrooms,
an outdoor performance stage, and a new music recording studio and rehearsal space.
Over the past two years, we have also experienced tremendous program growth with the implementation
of Math in Focus, Writer’s Workshop, a new K–5 science lab, new K–8 Spanish curriculum, new
technology courses in the Middle School, and equity and inclusion groups. As the footprint of our
school grows, our administration, faculty and staff continue to innovate and bring new ideas to fruition
to benefit our students.

A Message from the Board
The 2013–2014 and the 2014–2015 school years were exciting for Redwood
Day School as we reached full enrollment, implemented new academic
initiatives and launched our Here We Grow Capital Campaign for our new
campus building projects. The building includes educational spaces that
are mission consistent and representative of the creative, dynamic thinking
processes we want students to engage in as learners.
Redwood Day School is in a very strong financial position. We own our
land outright, and have been able to responsibly grow our program through
increased revenue realized through Middle School expansion. Our annual
fund parent and guardian participation has grown steadily to 99% and our
Board of Trustees and Faculty/Staff have reached 100% participation every
year. Through your continued support we are poised to further capitalize on
our strengths, and continue to position Redwood Day School as a leader in
K–8 innovative education in Oakland and the larger East Bay.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we want to express our deep appreciation

RDSPGA
Every Redwood Day School parent and guardian is a member of the RDSPGA. Our close-knit
community of families and educators continues to stand out as an incredibly active, dynamic and
inclusive group, focused on the children at the center of our mission. The RDSPGA exists to:
• Build community and organize activities that enrich the Redwood Day School
experience for students, parents, faculty and staff;
• Promote volunteer opportunities, parent education programs, and school events
that foster community and encourage participation;
• Support the School’s mission, philosophy and strategic plan;
• Facilitate communication between the parents and guardians and the School; and
• Sponsor fundraising initiatives to augment the School’s resources.
The RDSPGA made a smooth transition from being a separate organization to a department of the
school. In this new relationship, the RDSPGA not only carries out its own mission, but also works in
strong partnership with the administration to better serve our community. The RDSPGA continues to
have an energetic board of directors and enthusiastic committee chairs. We want to acknowledge the
many volunteers who plan, coordinate and staff various events throughout the year.
As we look forward, we want to encourage parents, guardians and our entire community to stay
involved supporting our children, the faculty and staff. Even if individually we give a small amount
of time, together we can make a big difference!

18 HONORING 2014–2015
Construction began in June 2015 and
is well underway to be ready for the
fall of 2016. The building is a physical
manifestation of our educational
philosophy that all disciplines are
interconnected. The spaces are
designed to be flexible and adaptable,
to encourage creative, interdisciplinary
thinking. All of the spaces in the
new facility are connected in way
that explicitly teaches children that
interdisciplinary thinking is the key
to success in the future. Upon
completion of this project, Redwood
Day School will be one of the only
Redwood Day School Board of Trustees Day 2015–16 visit to the
construction site.
K–8 schools in Oakland and the East Bay with a facility thoughtfully designed to encourage
development of essential skills that we know our children will need to be successful in the future.

Our 50th Anniversary
Celebrating our 50th Anniversary, we brought together generations of Redwood Day students,
families, faculty, staff, and friends to honor our wonderful history and look forward to our
exciting future. It is hard to believe that our school started with twelve students in 1963, and
has since blossomed to what it is today—a thriving model of exemplary independent education
rooted in a deep connection between engaging academics and social and emotional growth.
