LWC Hosts National Foundation’s<br />

Summer Leadership Institute<br />

More than 250 individuals with a deep commitment to<br />

service-learning came to Columbia-Adair County in late<br />

May for a national meeting about civic engagement and<br />

community-building.<br />

Those were among the topics discussed at the 27th-annual<br />

Bonner Foundation Summer Leadership Institute, held<br />

May 23-26 at Lindsey Wilson College.<br />

The Bonner Summer Leadership Institute, known as SLI,<br />

is an annual conference hosted by a school affiliated with<br />

the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation of Princeton,<br />

N.J.<br />

Nationally, the Bonner Foundation partners with 60 college<br />

campuses on creative service-learning programs designed<br />

to contribute to the education, health and well-being<br />

of the communities they serve while providing students<br />

with scholarship opportunities.<br />

Pasqua said LWC was an obvious choice to host the <strong>2017</strong><br />

SLI.<br />

“Every year we pick a different school to host the conference,<br />

and this year it was a no-brainer,” Pasqua said. “The<br />

LWC Bonner Program is enthusiastic and ready to get to<br />

work on SLI. It just seemed like the perfect time for Lindsey<br />

Wilson. I believe that I speak for most everyone when I<br />

say that we’ve all been blown away by their hospitality,<br />

love for the area and serving others.”<br />

This year’s SLI attracted more than 250 participants from<br />

more than 50 U.S. institutions, which included national<br />

partners, Bonner administrators and Bonner students. The<br />

three-day conference featured five sessions in which participants<br />

discussed a broad range of issues that included civic<br />

engagement and community-building. Sessions were led by<br />

students, administrators and national partners.<br />

LWC Bonner Program Director Natalie Vickous said<br />

that holding SLI at LWC served as a way to “break some<br />

misconceptions” people may have about Kentucky.<br />

“By the end of the week, everyone I spoke to was in love<br />

with Kentucky and Lindsey Wilson College, raving about<br />

our beautiful campus, our supportive administration and our<br />

community partners,” Vickous said.<br />

And Vickous said that events such as SLI are great reminders<br />

to always remember the big picture.<br />

“It’s so easy for us to get caught up in the day-to-day requirements<br />

of our own small program and forget about the<br />

national scale and the impact Bonners are having on the<br />

world,” she said. “It was our privilege to host everyone and<br />

be part of that annual reminder of the bigger picture.”<br />

Two Bonner Scholars Receive Honors<br />

Bonner Scholar junior Autumn Bishop of Brooksville, Ky., left, and<br />

Bonner Scholar senior Logan Adams of Somerset, Ky., were honored<br />

with the <strong>2017</strong> Inspiring Service Ambassador award. The award, presented<br />

by the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation, is given to individuals<br />

who log more than 100 hours of community service that align with at least<br />

one of the 17 United Nations’ “Sustainable Development Goals.” Examples<br />

of the U.N. goals range from providing progress toward eliminating<br />

hunger to fighting for gender equality worldwide.<br />
