Notable and Noteworthy<br />

• Communication instructor Benson Sexton successfully<br />

defended his dissertation, “Exploring the Influence<br />

of Students’ Perceptions of Instructional<br />

Message Content Relevance and Experienced Cognitive<br />

Load on Students’ Cognitive Learning March.”<br />

His doctorate is in communication the University of<br />

Kentucky.<br />

• Jamie Thorn, adjunct instructor in Sustainability<br />

and Recreation, Tourism & Sports Management, successfully<br />

defended her dissertation, “Sustainability<br />

Education: Parks, Recreation, Tourism & Natural Resource<br />

Management.” Her doctorate is from Prescott<br />

College in Arizona.<br />

• Criminal Justice Instructor Angie Schwendau<br />

successfully defended her dissertation, “The Dangers<br />

and Self-Protective Behaviors of Rideshare Drivers,”<br />

at the American Society of Criminology in New<br />

Orleans and the Southern Criminal Justice Association<br />

in Savannah, Ga. Her doctorate is from the University<br />

of Louisville.<br />

• Assistant Professor of English Karolyn Steffens<br />

was invited to contribute a chapter of original research<br />

to a new volume in the Cambridge Critical<br />

Companions series. Her chapter, "Modernity as the<br />

Cultural Crucible of Trauma," will appear in Cambridge<br />

Critical Concepts: Trauma in Literary Studies,<br />

edited by J. Roger Kurtz.<br />

• Recent publications by Professor of Religion and<br />

Dean of the Chapel Terry Swan include the books A<br />

Faith Called Christianity and Change Your Thoughts<br />

Change Your World. He and Instructor of Religion<br />

Dennis Crump have co-written Your Neighbor’s Religion:<br />

A Christian Perspective on Major World Religions,<br />

which was published in August.<br />

• Associate Professor of Mathematics John La-<br />

Grange published two articles: “Annihilators in Zerodivisor<br />

Graphs of Meet Semilattices” and “Reduced<br />

Commutative Semigroups” in the Journal of Pure and<br />

Applied Algebra. He published an article with D.F. Anderson,<br />

also in the Journal of Algebra. He has several<br />

other papers in the works, including a joint<br />

project with LWC senior Candace Kimball.<br />

• Four home-study courses written by Associate<br />

Professor of Human Services & Counseling<br />

Lawrence Anthony were published by Heisel and<br />

Associates and are available online. He also contributed<br />

to the book The Girl in the Shadows: A Journey<br />

from Darkness to Light.<br />

• Professor of Counseling Patrick Hardesty co-authored<br />

an article in the Journal of Evolutionary Psychology<br />

on the “Psychometric Study of Human Life<br />

History Strategies: State of the science and Evidence<br />

of Two Independent Dimensions.”<br />

• Associate Professor of Human Services & Counseling<br />

Daniel Schnopp-Wyatt and Regional Academic<br />

Director Nicole Schnopp-Wyatt were<br />

involved in the MIT/Soar (Shaping our Appalachian<br />

Region) Health-Hack-a-Thon. Each participated on<br />

teams that won awards for their innovations in addressing<br />

substance abuse concerns in Appalachia.<br />

Daniel’s team won the top award for the substance<br />

abuse category; Nicole’s group, which included<br />

alumni from the LWC School of Professional Counseling,<br />

won second place in that category.<br />
