Comparative diversity and composition of small non-volant mammals in areas found on Soccsksargen Region, Philippines

Eight species belonging to Muridae and Viverridae family were documented and collected in the three sampling sites: Polomolok, South Cotabato; Upper Biangan, Malungon, Sarangani Province and; K’laja, Conel, General Santos City. Philippines contain unique small non-volant fauna, which can be seen in greater Mindanao, the second largest island of the country, that has not yet been studied that much and still lacks information predominantly on areas like South Cotabato, Sarangani and General Santos City. This study was conducted to determine the different species found in three sampling sites on agricultural landscapes in selected areas of SOCCSKSARGEN. Sampling was done on October – December of 2015 using baited Sherman trap cages that were set through the three sampling sites. Species Rattus everetti was the dominant and most abundant group along the three sites. Species diversity is low as well as endemism; furthermore, there is observed much significant difference in species evenness and species richness. However, the study provides vital information about the current diversity of small non-volant mammals residing on certain parts of SOCCSKSARGEN region.

Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

Philipp<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>es is known for its rich c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>diversity</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> high level <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> endemism <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>mammals</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

which is associated to the geological sett<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

archipelago (Balete et al. 2009). Philipp<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>es also<br />

support <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the world’s most dist<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ctive fauna<br />

(Heaney et al, 1998) due to remarkable series <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>small</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>mammals</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>found</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> its mounta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s (Thomas, 1898).<br />

In the latest account, there are at least 103 species <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>small</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>n<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>volant</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>mammals</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> 93 (90%) are <str<strong>on</strong>g>found</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

to be endemic <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Philipp<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>es (Heaney et al. 2010)<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> about 80% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> these are <str<strong>on</strong>g>found</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> greater<br />

M<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>danao, the sec<strong>on</strong>d largest isl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the country,<br />

that are nowhere else <str<strong>on</strong>g>found</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the world (Jalique et<br />

al, 2015).<br />

Small <str<strong>on</strong>g>n<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>volant</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>mammals</str<strong>on</strong>g> are identified as species<br />

group to m<strong>on</strong>itor <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> recogniti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the abundant <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

varied ecological functi<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> ecosystems; (Marcot<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Aubrey 2003) as c<strong>on</strong>sumers, <str<strong>on</strong>g>small</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>mammals</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

may <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>fluence the nutrient dynamics <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ecosystems or<br />

distributi<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> plant populati<strong>on</strong>s. These ecological<br />

relati<strong>on</strong>ships <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>small</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>n<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>volant</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>mammals</str<strong>on</strong>g> have been<br />

shaped by their dependence <strong>on</strong> natural habitats<br />

(Ricart et al, 2007). They also have varied patterns<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> range <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> distributi<strong>on</strong>; they may be affected by the<br />

habitat type <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> other factors such as temperature,<br />

precipitati<strong>on</strong>, competiti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> predati<strong>on</strong> (Heaney,<br />

2001). But still, <str<strong>on</strong>g>small</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>n<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>volant</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>mammals</str<strong>on</strong>g> are not<br />

given attenti<strong>on</strong> because they usually occur <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> complex<br />

communities with high species richness (Wells et al,<br />

2004).<br />

With the discovery that several sub centers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

endemism exist with<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> isl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s, <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>formati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>diversity</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> distributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>small</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>n<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>volant</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>mammals</str<strong>on</strong>g> is c<strong>on</strong>t<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ually <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>creas<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g (Reg<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>aldo et al,<br />

2014) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> there is still a need to c<strong>on</strong>duct more<br />

surveys <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> many <str<strong>on</strong>g>areas</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

This study was c<strong>on</strong>ducted across <str<strong>on</strong>g>n<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>c<strong>on</strong>tiguous<br />

habitats with vary<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g levels <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> disturbances, namely,<br />

K’laja, General Santos City, Polomolok, South<br />

Cotabato <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Malung<strong>on</strong>, Sarangani Prov<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce located<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Southern M<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>danao, Philipp<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>es to determ<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e if<br />

there are some <str<strong>on</strong>g>small</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>n<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>volant</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>mammals</str<strong>on</strong>g> that are<br />

endemic <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> each area <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> to assess the mammalian<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>compositi<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the species with the recent studies.<br />

This provides additi<strong>on</strong>al records <strong>on</strong> geographic<br />

distributi<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>small</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>mammals</str<strong>on</strong>g> known to be<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>digenous across different sites <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> this area <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Southern Philipp<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>es.<br />

Materials <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> methods<br />

Study sites<br />

The 27-<str<strong>on</strong>g>n<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>c<strong>on</strong>t<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>uous day sampl<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g was c<strong>on</strong>ducted<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the 30 th <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> October to 17 th <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> December 2015, <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

SOCCSKSARGEN. This regi<strong>on</strong> is located between<br />

mounta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> ranges <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> valleys that approximately gets<br />

an annual mean <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 216.1 mm ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>fall <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> has a high<br />

agricultural rate that supports diverse flora <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

fauna. The actual locati<strong>on</strong> was determ<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed through<br />

Global Positi<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g System (GPS).<br />

Site One<br />

K’laja karst is located 15 km at the Northeast side <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

General Santos City, Barangay C<strong>on</strong>el. Its coord<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ates<br />

are 006.25912° N, 125.16706°E <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> is surrounded by<br />

towers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> karsts formati<strong>on</strong> made milli<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> years<br />

ago. Opposite to this area were the camp<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g rounds<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Nopol Hills which borders C<strong>on</strong>el <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Barangay<br />

Mabuhay. Sampl<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g was d<strong>on</strong>e <strong>on</strong> 30 th <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> October to<br />

7 th <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> November 2015. Sampl<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g was d<strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> a<br />

lowl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> tropical forest that is <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> low elevated area.<br />

The forest layer is littered with th<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> layer <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> wet leaf<br />

litter with a th<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> sheet <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> humus substrate<br />

underneath. A large area <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> corn plantati<strong>on</strong><br />

dom<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ates the area.<br />

Site Two<br />

Guaza Village, Polomolok is located 24.4 km away<br />

from General Santos City, South Cotabato with<br />

6°18’36.4” N, 125°08’49.1 E coord<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ates. The<br />

sampl<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g was d<strong>on</strong>e <strong>on</strong> the 15 th to 23 rd <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> November<br />

2015. The sampl<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g was c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>on</strong> a regenerat<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

hill dipterocarp forest with a low elevated slop<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

terra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Vegetati<strong>on</strong> was dom<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ated by coc<strong>on</strong>ut<br />

plantati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> root crops.<br />

Site Three<br />

C<strong>on</strong>sidered the most disturbed habitat out <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all the<br />

three sites, Brgy.Upper Biangan, Malung<strong>on</strong>,<br />

Sarangani Prov<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce is located 6°26'16"N, 125°14'24"E<br />

from General Santos City, South Cotabato. Sampl<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

was d<strong>on</strong>e <strong>on</strong> the 9 th to 17 th <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> December 2015 <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> was<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>on</strong> low elevated area. Several settlements<br />

could be seen <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the sampl<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g site <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the area is<br />

limited. Vegetati<strong>on</strong> is dom<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ated by rice plantati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Some habitants report <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the huge <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>crease <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Muridae (rodents) <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the area due to the c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> rice <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> corn mill.<br />

Capture, Process<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Identificati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Small N<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>volant</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Mammals<br />

The traps used to capture <str<strong>on</strong>g>small</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>n<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>volant</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>mammals</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

were limited to live Sherman traps. A 500-m transect<br />

l<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e was used <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the trapp<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g procedure where 15m<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>tervals are established that varied <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> length<br />

accord<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g to the slope <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the terra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> (with 15-35<br />

capture stati<strong>on</strong>s). Each capture stati<strong>on</strong> was composed<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1 live-capture trap (Sherman® 7.6 × 8.9 × 22.9 cm;<br />

H.B. Sherman® Fold<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g Traps, Tallahassee, FL.)<br />

placed <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> between corners <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> corn mills <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> coc<strong>on</strong>ut.<br />

Baits used were a mixture <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> peanut butter with<br />

coc<strong>on</strong>ut shredd<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g, banana, rice <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> corn <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

other bait is just corn. They were positi<strong>on</strong>ed <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>areas</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

where rats may be present. The traps were placed<br />

strategically <strong>on</strong> 3 possible <str<strong>on</strong>g>n<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>volant</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>mammals</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>fested <str<strong>on</strong>g>areas</str<strong>on</strong>g>: corn plantati<strong>on</strong>, tropical forest patch<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> rice plantati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

With the help <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> local guides, the traps were baited<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> set <strong>on</strong> each <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> trapp<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g sessi<strong>on</strong>, checked the<br />

follow<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g morn<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g to record captures, adjusted<br />

treadle sensitivity, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> cleaned <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> rebaited traps as<br />

needed. Traps were left active 24 hours a day dur<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

each trapp<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g sessi<strong>on</strong>. Captured animals are collected<br />

twice each day, <strong>on</strong>ce <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the morn<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g (6:00 am to 7:00<br />

am) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>ce <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the afterno<strong>on</strong> (5:00 pm to 6:00 pm).<br />

The animals are properly h<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>led accord<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g to their<br />

sizes <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> species.<br />

All captured <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dividuals were collected <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> measured<br />

based <strong>on</strong> its external measurements, ma<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ly its tail,<br />

head, h<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>d foot length <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> other external metrics,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>clud<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g total body length, snout, ears, fr<strong>on</strong>t legs,<br />

most widely because this species is generally known<br />

capture site <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the productivity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the whole<br />

woodl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> (Niedziałkowska et al. 2010).<br />

There were <strong>on</strong>ly two <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dividuals <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mus musculus,<br />

three Tarsomys apoensis, four Paradoxurus<br />

hermaphroditus <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>four Rattus Tanezumi that were<br />

recorded <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the study. This low count <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> capture can<br />

be noted by the <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>adequate number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> live traps used,<br />

the <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>effective bait made <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>terrupti<strong>on</strong> with<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>sufficient sampl<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g nights due to outpour <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Small <str<strong>on</strong>g>n<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>volant</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>mammals</str<strong>on</strong>g> specifically rodents,<br />

are primarily nut <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> seed-eaters, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the bait used<br />

was peanut butter which is rich <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> calories, but it<br />

turned out to be counterproductive. This result<br />

co<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>cides that native Philipp<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>mammals</str<strong>on</strong>g> are closely<br />

associated with, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> dependent up<strong>on</strong> their, natural<br />

forest habitat (Heaney et al, 1998), <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> this may be<br />

the reas<strong>on</strong> that they are not lured because they are<br />

used to eat<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g foods that can be <str<strong>on</strong>g>found</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> their area. In<br />

additi<strong>on</strong>, mammalian species richness decreases with<br />

ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>fall (Start et al, 2011) because climate is <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

most important predictor variables expla<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

mammalian species richness <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> abundance patterns<br />

(Novillo, et al, 2014). Moreover, Rattus everetti was<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>found</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> all sampl<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>areas</str<strong>on</strong>g> because they can tolerate<br />

a range <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> habitat modificati<strong>on</strong>s (Heaney, et al,<br />

2008).<br />

these sampl<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g sites can be ascribed to the dense<br />

vegetati<strong>on</strong> (Heaney et al, 1995). These sites were at an<br />

elevati<strong>on</strong> that is adjacent to fields <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Zea mays (corn)<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Oryza sativa (rice) which are known to aid <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

forag<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g activities <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the rodents (Anaeto, 2000).<br />

hermaphroditus usually live <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> dense tropical<br />

forested habitats <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> agricultural <str<strong>on</strong>g>areas</str<strong>on</strong>g> where mature<br />

fruit trees grow <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> even al<strong>on</strong>gside with humans with<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> disturbed forest (e.g., by low-level logg<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

natural disturbances such as l<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>slides) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> probably<br />

m<strong>on</strong>tane forest up to 1,800 m (Heaney et al. 2008).<br />

The four <str<strong>on</strong>g>n<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>-endemic species; Mus musculus,<br />

comm<strong>on</strong>ly called a house mice tends not to be <str<strong>on</strong>g>found</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> forests <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> is <strong>on</strong>ly <str<strong>on</strong>g>found</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> a very wide range <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

man-made habitats <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>clud<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g houses, farm<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> forests <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> other habitats (Dwyer, 1978)<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>volv<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g those created by humans, such as houses,<br />

granaries, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> cultivated l<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s, provided that it has<br />

adequate food supplies <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> shelter.<br />

These rats usually live below 1,000 m <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> elevati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

where there is good ground cover <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> well-dra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed<br />

soil (Masaharu, et al, 2001), Rattus argentiventer<br />

comm<strong>on</strong>ly called rice field rat are <str<strong>on</strong>g>found</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> habitats<br />

The species evenness (Tables 2, 3 <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> 4) has a<br />

significant difference. The results <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dicate that K’laja<br />

Karst, General Santos City has achieved the highest<br />

species <str<strong>on</strong>g>diversity</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dex, followed by Polomolok, South<br />

Cotabato <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> lastly, Malung<strong>on</strong>, Sarangani Prov<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>sider<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g the species <str<strong>on</strong>g>diversity</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the three<br />

communities, where Polomolok has six species, with<br />

Rattus everetti that numerically dom<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ates the other<br />

five species <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Malung<strong>on</strong> hav<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g three species with<br />

Rattus argentiventer that dom<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ates the other two<br />

species, both <str<strong>on</strong>g>areas</str<strong>on</strong>g> have <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dividuals that have highly<br />

apart <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>tervals while it is <strong>on</strong>ly <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> K’laja, where the four<br />

species are more evenly represented.<br />

K’laja has less variati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the relative abundance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

species, thus c<strong>on</strong>sidered to be more “even”, s<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce<br />

greater evenness have greater species <str<strong>on</strong>g>diversity</str<strong>on</strong>g> than<br />

those communities, Polomolok <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Malung<strong>on</strong> with<br />

more variati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> relative abundance.<br />

Species richness (Table 5) is simply the number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

South Cotabato because the area is tropical, a habitat<br />

with such forested mounta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>tops that has higher<br />

productivity (the amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> carb<strong>on</strong> fixed by<br />

photosynthesis per unit area per time) surrounded by<br />

arid l<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> suitable for <str<strong>on</strong>g>small</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>n<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>volant</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>mammals</str<strong>on</strong>g> to<br />

live <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> survive, followed by K’laja karst, General<br />

Santos City <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> lastly, Malung<strong>on</strong>, Sarangani<br />

Prov<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong><br />

The species <str<strong>on</strong>g>diversity</str<strong>on</strong>g> is low as well as endemism.<br />

Elevati<strong>on</strong> does not directly <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>fluence the distributi<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> species but rather, it is the c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the habitat<br />

<strong>on</strong> which they are dependent to, whether it may be<br />

prist<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e or disturbed, that has affected the rat species<br />

present. The presence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> both four endemic <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>n<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>endemic<br />

species <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dicates that SOCCSKSARGEN is<br />

important for the protecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> plants <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> natural<br />

resources because it’s where animals are dependent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

to survive especially endemic species. But there are<br />

also observed cases where these <str<strong>on</strong>g>small</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>n<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>volant</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>mammals</str<strong>on</strong>g> threat the envir<strong>on</strong>ment that was ma<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ly<br />

damag<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g the crops <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> plantati<strong>on</strong>s due to fast<br />

reproducti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> these rodents. Results <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dicate the<br />

call to keep an eye <strong>on</strong> these endemic species <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> try to<br />

f<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>d facts about them, s<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce <str<strong>on</strong>g>small</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>mammals</str<strong>on</strong>g> are<br />

excellent bio<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dicators <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> forest c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> accord<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

to Salibay <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Luy<strong>on</strong>. Sampl<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> adjacent <str<strong>on</strong>g>areas</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

SOCCSKSARGEN <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> other parts <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> M<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>danao may<br />

result <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> more number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> species s<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce it c<strong>on</strong>ta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s<br />
