Empowered lives.
Resilient nations.

‘’ We hope that one day sustainable
development would no longer be
work-in-progress but a mindset.’’
United Nations Development Programme Resident
Representative a.i. to the United Arab Emirates
INTRODUCTION
The United Nations Development Programme
(UNDP) is dedicated to improving the lives of
people worldwide helping countries make sure
their people thrive in safe and healthy communities.
The work that UNDP and partners do
towards that end is diverse, and the results speak
for themselves. UNDP, operating in nearly 170
countries and territories, aims to eradicate
poverty, reduce exclusion and inequalities
around the world and achieve sustainable
development. It does so through aiding
countries in developing policies, partnership
abilities, leadership skills, and capacity building.
UNDP also plays a major role in the implementation
of the UN Global Goals for Sustainable
Development (SDGs), the universal agenda
adopted by world leaders since 2015 to end
poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle
climate change by 2030.
UNDP has been present in the UAE since 1977.
Our country office works closely with the
government and other counterparts to achieve
the UAE Vision 2021. Our mandate involves clean
energy, gender equality, good governance, and
human development with special focus on youth
and women empowerment. UNDP, represented
by its country office in UAE, has actively
participated in several major conferences that
brought together local and regional leaders.
These events focused, variously, on climate
change, human development, humanitarianism,
and more. We are always eager to join hands
with the government, the civil society as well as
the private sector to promote economic
development in the Northern Emirates, promote
employment opportunities for women, and
come up with policies for SME development and
sustainable employment especially for nationals
in the knowledge economy.

MEET THE TEAM
YOUTH
The human assets and expertise are what represent
the comparative advantage of UNDP as a partner of
choice for the UAE government and institutions. By
working closely with our colleagues in UNDP
headquarters in New York and in UNDP Regional Hub
in Amman, we will continue to deliver quality development
services. We are confident in our cooperation
with the UAE government to achieve the country’s
aim to become one of the best countries in the world by 2021 and turn the UAE into
the “happiest place on earth”.
HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
UNDP is supporting the UAE in broadening the base of
the national debate on human development beyond
traditional financial growth. The National Human
Development Re-ports co-produced by UNDP are an
important reference for the developmental accomplishment
of the UAE.
UNDP country office has launched the UAE Human
Development Report 2017 project,
in cooperation with the UAE University Centre for Public Policy and Leadership. UNDP
has also co-produced the first Abu Dhabi Human Development Report 2011/2012.
UNDP globally is committed to partnering with
young people who want to shape and contribute
to development calling for meaningful civic,
economic, social and political participation.
UNDP in the UAE is committed to assist the
government in encouraging youth, the future
generation, become the instrument of change and to turn UAE into a global
leading country.
UNDP Country office has been taking part in national and regional efforts to
empower youth. In 2015, UNDP Arab States launched a Youth Leadership
Programme (YLP1) to bring together ambitious young men and women from
around the region to mentor. UNDP in UAE hosts the YLP workshops and mentorships
to help young people become engaged citizens, innovative problem-solvers,
and agents of change.
UNDP is delighted to be part of an ongoing inspirational initiative “the Carbon
Ambassador Programme”, supported by Dubai Carbon, in collaboration with
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). This programme is a youth engagement
initiative providing UAE youth with the know-how and skills to fulfil the
ambitious Emirate energy and green economy roadmap to 2030.

GENDER
Of the 17 Arab states covered by UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Arab
States, the UAE ranks highest in gender equality. That’s no small
feat in a traditionally male-dominated region. UAE has moved a
long way in empowering women. UNDP has helped maintain that
standard with the knowledge that empowerment begins with
education.
Emirati women have been able to realize their full potential
through UN-hosted workshops on leadership and gender
perspective. As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting women, UNDP has worked closely with the
General Women’s Union, organising a series of workshops like: “Gender and Elections”, “Gender Audit of
Higher Education Policies in UAE”, and the “Our publications including the gender gap report and the
gender mainstreaming booklet helped shed light in places where limited access and opportunities to
women have prevailed. UNDP participated in the Women Empowerment Panel of the UN Global Compact
Anniversary, presenting UNDP’s engagement on Gender and Women’s empowerment, as well as the
hurdles and opportunities of the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPS) in the UAE.
UNDP Country office extends hands to the General Women’s Union, the Gender Balance Council, Nama
Women Advancement Establishment and other local counterparts in the UAE with the aim to support
women be more employable, empowered and eventually resilient.
ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT
Clean energy adoption and greenhouse gas reduction have been at the top of the agenda for both UNDP
and UAE government.
In 2011, UNDP and DEWA have partnered to establish the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (‘Dubai
Carbon’) as a new centre for achieving low-carbon, climate resilience development goals in the UAE. UNDP
along with DEWA and Dubai Carbon proudly sponsors important publications in this field like the annual
State of Green Economy and the State of Energy reports.
In 2016, the Government of Dubai sought to partner with
UNDP to jointly design and launch a new World Green
Economy Organization (WGEO) to be based in Dubai. The
WGEO will pioneer a new way of promoting the green
economy by bringing together governments, the private
sector, foundations, UN system, the banking system and
civil society, working together to achieve green economy
goals. When fully operational in 2019, WGEO will serve as
a mechanism for generating new solutions to climate
change, sustainable energy, water and other environmental challenges in developing
countries, and supporting international cooperation between member states in areas of
innovation, technology and finance.
GOVERNANCE FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
The services rendered by UNDP in UAE focuses on
improving the efficiency of public sector, promoting good
governance with broader public participation, strengthening
the national legislative institutions, advocating
gender mainstreaming, and facilitating integration into
global market, all with the intended objective of elevating
human development, as stipulated in the SDGs. There are
plenty of misconceptions over what sustainable development
means and we’re working to change that.
UNDP firmly believes in the power of cooperation and partnerships in working towards the
Sustainable Development Goals. These two values have been reflected in our efforts to promote
sustainable practices and knowledge within the public and private sectors. UNDP in the UAE
works for the improvement of government institutions’ responsiveness and for the modernisation
of the public administration at national and local levels. This allows to enhance ac¬countability,
transparency and efficiency of public institutions in the country.
