Major Gift, April 14 ‘Unite to Write’ Fundraiser
Will Undergird High School’s Writing Center
Glasrud Family Foundation
Provides Initial Support for New
Program to Begin in September
Supporting education in their hometown—and many
more local causes—is nothing new for the Glasrud
family, whose patriarch, Ted Sr., WBHS class of 1933,
died in 2009. Their $100,000 gift to the Foundation
in 2004 established an endowment for grants to educators
(today known as Glasrud Fellows) seeking to
further their professional development.
Now the Glasrud Family Foundation—headed by
Lorraine Glasrud and the three children, Sharon, Ted
Jr., and Deborah—has signaled its desire to propel the
creation of a White Bear Lake Area High School Writing
Center, with annual gifts of $20,000 over five years.
With that incentive—and with proceeds from the
WBLAEF’s April 14 fundraiser—the program can be
implemented this coming fall. (See adjacent stories for
its rationale and details of the upcoming event.)
3 New Board Members Inducted
Three newcomers were
elected—and welcomed—
to the WBLAEF Board of
Directors on Feb. 8:
n Heidi Brophy, a U.S.
Bank district manager;
n Dawn Hank, whose
background is in insurance
and human resources
management;
n Lara York, a community
volunteer closely involved
in the recent levy campaign.
All three and their husbands
are parents—two
per couple—of current
students in WBL schools.
“Their organizational
skills and enthusiasm for
our mission are contagious,”
said Foundation
president Kim Schoonover.
While Common in Colleges, Writing
Centers Atypical at Secondary Level
By MICHAEL J. LOVETT
Superintendent of Schools
While many colleges and universities have writing
centers to support the development of both
undergraduate and graduate students, high school
writing centers are less common, found more often in
innovative high schools.
A writing center, centrally located at North and
South campuses, will tailor seminars, programs, tutoring,
and coaching for students in grades 9–12. For the
ninth grader (or new English-language learner) to the
senior needing a guide to review college essays, a writing
center provides feedback and coaching. It will be
staffed by a teacher or coordinator who also will oversee
the work of adult volunteer tutors and more accomplished
students; these students will serve as tutors
or mentors and as a liaison with high school staff.
Rationale: Writing well is an essential skill for
a high school graduate, and an important factor in
student success in college. Our high school has a
ON MY MIND
By JENNY NADEAU
Vice President, Community Relations
Two quotations come to mind as being especially
relevant to the mission of The Closet, the WBLAEFsponsored
depository established last fall to assist
District 624 families in need of clothing, including
boots, winter coats, hats, and mittens:
n “Great opportunities to help seldom come, but
small ones surround us every day.”—Sally Koch
n “The measure of life is not its duration, but its
donation.”—Peter Marshall
Since The Closet opened in October, it has served
more than 60 children and adults in our district: moms,
dads, aunts, grandmas, babies, pre-schoolers, elementary
and middle- and high school students.
We are honored to have the opportunity to serve our
community with the gift of basic necessities that also
include baby items and career clothing.
Families may contact their school’s adminstrator
with their particular needs. A confidential appointment
will be set up, and a WBLAEF Board member will meet
the family at The Closet (housed in the Area Learning
Center at 2449 Orchard Lane, White Bear Lake).
All of the items at The Closet have been donated by
generous members of our community. The enthusiastic
support of District personnel has also helped to
make The Closet possible. We of the Foundation are
grateful for the chance to assist our neighbors.
Feel free to contact the WBLAEF office (651/429-
7696) if you have any questions about The Closet—or
about any of the Foundation’s programs. And have a
wonderful spring!
Family Honors Sandee Heurung
with a Memorial Hockey Fund
Through the WBLAEF, the family of
Sandee Heurung, a devoted “hockey
mom” who died in 2011, has established
a memorial fund in her honor. It will
provide one $2,000 college-level scholarship,
likely to be awarded annually, to a
graduating WBL senior who has demonstrated
a strong commitment
to community service—and
who has played
on either the boys’ Junior
Gold hockey team or the
girls’ U19 hockey team.
Sandee Heurung
Mrs. Heurung was a
passionate advocate for
hockey, and for making it a fun experience
for players and parents alike. Around
town she was known as “Mrs. Coach” and
as a second mom to many players. Even
after her own sons graduated, she continued
to help others ease into her former
role as manager of the Junior Gold teams;
furthermore, she organized an “Empty-
Netters Club” for hockey moms she had
met over the years.
The Sandee Heurung (Hockey Mom)
Memorial Scholarship Fund is openended,
and other interested parties are
welcome to contribute to it through the
All 10 Mariner Classes (’74-’83) Slate
Reunion June 9 at Withrow Ballroom
Tammy Aarsby (class of
’78) and Sheree Zukowski
(’77) are alphabetically
the first and last
of the 3,624* seniors who
have the distinction of
being graduates of Mariner
High School (grades
9-12) during its 11-year
existence in the new
school on McKnight Road
south of County Road E.
Since then the building,
renamed South Campus,
has housed grades 11 and
12 of White Bear Lake
Those 3,624 (±) Mariners,
of course, are also
WB alumni, yet little by
little their unique identity
has faded from public
awareness.
That, happily, is about
to change!
How so? By an All-
Mariner Alumni Reunion,
slated from 5 p.m. to midnight
Saturday, June 9,
at the historic Withrow
Ballroom (12169 Keystone
Ave. N.) between Hugo
and Stillwater.
How many Mariners
will respond is unknown.
but this should be close.
POSSIBLY A PICNIC IN THE PARK
Midsummer Alumni Family Event?
With the fall 2011 All-
School Reunion still within
shortterm memory banks,
WBLAAA Board members
assembled Feb. 13 began
casting around ideas for an
informal summer 2012
alumni gathering (not that
the 2011 event was exactly
“formal”). Various suggestions
were bandied about,
including a sailboat race, a
golf match, a 5K run (or
walk or crawl).
Yet the most resonance
seemed attached to a picnic
in the park, to which
alumni and their families
from the 1930s onward
would be invited. How
they would be invited, the
when and the where of
such an occasion remain
open questions at this
point, but as Alumni Association
president Eunice
Coté ’73 remarked, “It
could be another fun intergenerational
party.”
Whether or not it materializes
depends on how
much interest is kindled,
and who would be willing
to pull it all together. The
Spring News may, or may
not, have more details.
