India cannot be true No.1 team
without playing Pakistan: Dean Jones
NEW DELHI: Taking a
pot-shot at the Indian
team, former Australian
batsman Dean Jones
believes that the Virat
Kohli-led outfit cannot be
considered numero uno
unless it plays Pakistan.
India are placed No.1 in
the current Test match
rankings but have not
played Pakistan since
2007-08 in Test match
cricket. The last time the
two teams met almost a
decade ago, India who
hosted the series, won the
three-match series 1-0.
Speaking to Deccan
Chronicle, Jones said, “I’m
a firm believer that there is
no such thing called No.1
side in cricket. India
became the ‘No.1 Test’
side without facing
Pakistan. I would love to
see the two teams play in a
Test series. In last twothree
years, there is so
much improvement in
Pakistan cricket.”
He further said, “The
Pakistan Super League has
transformed them into a
professional unit. The
Champions Trophy success
can also be attributed
to the players who
emerged through PSL.
Pakistan just have to get
their first-class structure
right.”
Top seed Nadal upset by
Canadian teen Shapovalov
MONTREAL: Canadian
teenager Denis Shapovalov
shocked top seeded Rafael
Nadal to reach the quarterfinals
of the ATP Montreal
Masters tournament, spoiling
the Spaniard´s chances
of returning to world number
one. The 18-year-old
Shapovalov, who needed a
wild card to get into the tournament,
continued his giant
killing form at the hardcourt
tournament by rallying to
beat Nadal in three sets, 3-6,
6-4, 7-6 (7/4) on Thursday.
Nadal would have
returned to No. 1 in the
world if he had defeated
Shapovalov Thursday, and
then Chung Hyeon or
Adrian Mannarino on
Friday.
Shapovalov´s
upset against the reigning
French Open champion
came as a result of some
inspired tennis in front of a
boisterous home crowd who
cheered his every shot.
and were equal at 4-4, but in
the final and decisive frame,
Pak 2 team played some outstanding
snooker to beat Pak
2 team. Earlier in the semifinals,
Pak 1 team outclassed
Wales team by 4-0, with the
scores of 67-59, 95-0, 65-52,
65-48 while Pak 2 trounced
Ireland by 4-0 as the score
was 86-04(52), 109-31(66),
63-50, 95-71. Soon after
Pakistan teams tremendous
finish in the world snooker
event, PBSA officials
extended heartiest felicitations
to the players and
termed it historic achievement,
as after a long time,
both Pakistani teams were
facing each other, which
gold and silver medals, both
were already won by
Pakistan. But the way Babar
andAsif finished mega event
by clinching the gold medal,
was also commendable.
India bid to
reinstate Sreesanth
fixing ban
NEW DELHI: India´s
cricket board will appeal
against a court order that
lifted fast bowler
S h a n t h a k u m a r a n
Sreesanth´s life ban for
match-fixing, a senior
official told AFP on
Friday.
The Board of Control
for Cricket in India
(BCCI) does not agree
with the Kerala state high
court order that acquitted
Sreesanth for lack of
proof, the official said on
condition of anonymity.
After the court ruling
on Monday, Sreesanth, 34,
said he was hoping to get
his career back on track
and represent India at the
next World Cup in 2019.
But the BCCI official
said: "We don´t agree with
the order. It definitely
needs to be challenged
and within a week the
appeal would be filed in
the Kerala high court.
"We were always clear
on this case as the board is
firm on its zero tolerance
policy on corruption and
match-fixing," the official
added.
Sreesanth and two
other Rajasthan Royals
players were banned for
life over alleged involvement
in betting and spotfixing
following a 2013
scandal in the Indian
Premier League.
There was no instruction to lose the 2011
World Cup final, says Muthiah Muralitharan
Sports Reporter
KARACHI: World's
highest wicket taker and
the member of Sri Lanka's
2011 World Cup squad
Muttiah Muralitharan says
there was "no instruction"
to lose the final.
Speaking exclusively
the 45-year-old
Muralitharan says, "India
was the first best team and
ours was the second best
team in the tournament.
We had a good opportunity
to win in the final, but two
things happened. I had a
groin injury in the semi
final and Angelo Mathews,
who was among runs was
completely out (final)
because he was injured".
"The batsmen were
scoring runs but the middle
order batsmen didn't click
in few matches and the
selectors made 3-4
changes and it was far than
a regular team".
"(On winning the toss)
the senior players and the
selectors were scared of
chasing the target and
thought of batting first.
But in my mind was to bat
second because I thought
India could chase any target
and this was intimated
to the team-management.
This I had told to them
with my previous tour
experience of dew factor".
He said the moot will,
among other matters,
decide about the hosting
venue of the Under-19
Asia Cup, which is scheduled
to take place in
Bengaluru, India in
November this year.
Media reports earlier
stated that the PCB would
raise an objection to India
hosting the Under-19 Asia
Cup amid political tension
between the two countries.
On the much-awaited
Pakistan-India series,
Sethi assured he would be
holding talks with officials
from the Board of
Control for Cricket in
India in this regard.
He also affirmed that
the PCB would make
efforts to arrange for the
last few matches of Sri
Lankan series to be played
in Pakistan.
"But Sanga said he has
been promised by the
match referee that they
would spray the chemicals
and no dew threat to the
final".
"Within 15 overs dew
came and they could do
nothing. There was no
match-fixing but Mathews'
injury, miscalculation (on
dew factor) cost us the
World Cup final. But we
can't take away credit from
India".
This interview should
clear the doubts, if any, in
the minds of Arjuna
Ranatunga, who time and
again has been demanding
probe.
Najam Sethi leaves for Sri Lanka to attend ACC meeting
Sadia Shaikh further added that to
win the event in China the team
Sethi, after being elected
PCB chairman for a
three-year term earlier this
of isolation. Barring a
