People involved in corruption will
be held accountable: NAB chairman
Death penalty over corruption may reduce country's population
ISLAMABAD: NAB
has nothing to do with politics
and is only loyal to the
state of Pakistan, said NAB
Chairperson Justice (retd)
Javed Iqbal.
Speaking at a seminar in
Islamabad he said NAB is
aligned with the state, not
the government.
Governments come and go,
he said.
He underscored the
importance of accountability
and said this is no longer
a Mughal kingdom. Now,
even the common man can
ask political leaders things
and NAB has the constitutional
right to ask you, he
said. It is your duty to
answer these questions, he
added.
Justice Iqbal said propaganda
has been spread
against NAB but it doesn’t
matter because Pakistan’s
people know what is going
on.
“Not long ago people
said NAB is nothing but
dead wood, today even they
have to say it is a tree with
new branches and leaves,”
he said. He said it doesn’t
take dictation from anyone
and that even the government
had said it was an
unbiased institution.
Speaking about the
impression that NAB is targeting
the bureaucracy,
Justice Iqbal said it is very
important, the backbone of
the government, but if
there’s an issue in the backbone,
it causes pain to the
rest of the body. We won’t
be taking any wrong steps
against bureaucrats, he
assured, adding that there
are many capable bureaucrats
in the government.
However, he reiterated
that corruption cannot go
unpunished. He urged people
to cooperate with the
bureau.
Our loyalty is to the state
and the incumbent government’s
policies and that’s it,
he repeated.
Speaking about political
figures who have said that
NAB is not providing suspects
in its custody proper
facilities, he said that this
isn’t true. We’re giving all
the proper facilities, like
medical facilities and food
brought in from outside for
special needs, but remember
this isn’t a hotel, he
said.
He asked people to stop
bad mouthing NAB and
said there is no point in living
in the past. Learn from
it and live in the present, he
urged.
The NAB head said that
he had heard that the business
community had reservations
about NAB and said
he went to address a chamber
of commerce meeting
during which someone
asked why the death penalty
was not imposed for corruption.
We would lose half
of our population that way,
he quipped.
We won’t take steps
against the country’s economy,
he said, asking why
anyone thought they would
do so.
The steps we take are
for Pakistan and the people’s
benefit, he said. We
don’t care who you are or
were, he said, adding that
there were cases against
former prime minister,
chief ministers and other
political leaders.
Instead of propaganda,
use that effort to strengthen
your defence, he advised.
Justice Iqbal said that NAB
has no love or enmity
towards anyone. We are
just doing our job, he
explained.
He also said that the
bureau’s conviction rate is
70%, not 7%. “I think you
forgot a zero,” he laughed.
When you want to know
about NAB, don’t ask people
who have references
against them, he urged.
SCA condemns millers blackmailing: Demands
implementation of notified rate of rs.182
By Abbas Kassar
HYDERABAD Sindh
Chamber of Agriculture has
slated the attempt of
Pakistan Sugar Mills
Association (PASMA) to
black mail government for
getting more benefits in
shape of subsidy and has
demanded from Sindh government
to implement its
decision of fixing sugarcane
price of Rs.182 per 40 kilograms.
Chamber also condemned
statement of Pasma
through newspaper ads in
which it had said that paying government.
premium to growers would
put sugar mills in huge loss.
Chamber said recovery ratio
of sugarcane of Sindh is 2 to
2 and a half percent more
than that of Punjab as such
growers of Sindh have right
to get bonus along with
price of sugarcane. It
deplored that under excuse
of matter apex court sugar
mill owners have not paid a
single rupee as bonus to
growers of Sindh. Despite
fact that supreme court
headed by CJP had given
verdict in favour of growers
under which millers were
asked to pay arrears of
bonus to growers since last
18 years. It said on one hand
millers were not paying to
growers while on the other
they were blackmailing
Chamber
made appeal to Sindh government
to implement its
decision instead of being
blackmailed so to save
growers from total destruction.
SCA expressed concern
on change of environment
and noted that this condition
causes acute shortage of
water affecting cultivation.
Chamber suggested to
reduce environmental
effects more plantation
should be carried out. They
suggested that first of all 19
acres of forest land be
recovered from illegal occupation
of influential persons
and trees be planted there
which may bring change in
environment as more trees
can have more rains. SCA
meeting was chaired by its
president Qabool
Muhammad Khatian via
video link at Karachi,
Hyderabad, Sukkur,
Sanghar and Ghotki. It was
attended among others by
New obesity procedure also reduces muscle mass
ISLAMABAD: A study about a new procedure for the treatment of obesity has raised
some concerns. This is because, while the treatment leads to weight loss, the pounds a
person sheds consist of skeletal muscle as well as fat. Also, body fat loss seems to be
mainly of the subcutaneous as opposed to the riskier visceral type.
Skeletal muscle is necessary for good health; its loss can result in not only physical
problems, but it can also impair metabolism and raise the risk of injury.
Visceral fat is the type of fat that surrounds the organs deep inside the abdomen.
Doctors have linked carrying too much of it to health problems, such as type 2 diabetes
and heart disease. The procedure is called left gastric artery embolization. Interventional
radiologists have been using it for decades to stop bleeding in emergencies. However,
the idea of using gastric artery embolization to treat obesity is new, and clinical trials are
currently evaluating its safety and effectiveness for such a purpose. The aim of the treatment
is to reduce the effect of an appetite hormone by injecting microscopic beads to
block an artery that supplies blood to the stomach. The study's findings featured recently
at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America that is currently
taking place in Chicago, IL. Study lead author Dr. Edwin A. Takahashi, who is a vascular
and interventional radiology fellow at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, explains
that a lot of research has shown that gastric artery embolization can achieve weight loss.
Muhammad Umar Farooq
highlighted the objectives
of the event, stating it
helps to train the teachers
and introduce them with
new trends in English
learning.
The department invites
academic experts and
Master trainers on monthly
teacher community about
the rapid changes, taking
place in teaching techniques
and methodologies
OPINION
Effects & Impacts on Gulf and Middle
East countries by new developments
Rasheed Ahmad Chughtai
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani
said the US is mistaken to think
that it can break regional countries
apart, calling for collective efforts to
prepare for a post-American world in
which the US will not have the power to
dominate others.The recent developments
in the Middle East put a spotlight on
the changing nature of a key US relationship in the Middle
East that could have far-reaching consequences over the
middle and long-term. It is a change that is part of a larger,
global shift in US priorities and alliances that is likely
to outlive Mr. Trump’s term(s) in office.
The country that has started a trade war with China,
uses sarcastic tones with Pakistan, humiliatesAfghanistan,
punishes Turkey, threatens Russia and imposes sanctions
against Iran, is the prime suspect for breaking the bonds.
If the US thinks that it can break us apart, it is gravely mistaken.
When they put China’s trade under pressure, we all
suffer losses; when the use sarcastic tones against
Pakistan, we all take that insult serious; humiliation of
Afghanistan means belittling us all; when Turkey is punished,
we are all being punished; whenever they threaten
Russia, we all see our security threatened; when the boycott
Iran, they deprive all of us of the advantages of international
trade, energy security and sustainable development,
which means that they have boycotted everyone.
We are here to say it out loud that we will not tolerate this
insolence, and we will stand against them. We will stand
up to them by promoting our cooperation and deepen our
economic, social, cultural and security bonds.
Aseries of Gulf and Middle East-related developments
suggest that resolving some of the Middle East’s most
debilitating and devastating crises while ensuring that
efforts to pressure Iran do not perpetuate the mayhem may
be easier said than done. They also suggest that the same
is true for keeping US and Saudi interests aligned.
Optimists garner hope from the fact that the US Senate
may censor Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman
for the October 2 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in
Istanbul; the positive start of Yemeni peace talks in
Sweden with an agreement to exchange prisoners, Saudi
Arabia’s invitation to Qatar to attend an Gulf Cooperation
Council (GCC) summit in Riyadh, and a decision by the
Organization of Oil Exporting Countries (OPEC) to cut
production.
That optimism, however, may not be borne out by facts
on the ground and analysis of developments that are likely
to produce at best motion rather than movement. In fact,
more fundamentally, what many of the developments suggest
is an unacknowledged progressive shift in the
region’s alliances stemming in part from the fact that the
bandwidth of shared US-Saudi interests is narrowing.
There is no indication that, even if Qatari emir Sheikh
Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani decides to accept an invitation
by Saudi king Salman to attend the GCC summit
rather than send a lower level delegation or not attend at
all, either the kingdom or the United Arab Emirates, the
main drivers behind the 17-month old economic and
diplomatic boycott of the Gulf state, are open to a facesaving
solution despite US pressure to end to the rift.
Signaling that the invitation and an earlier comment by
Prince Mohammed that “despite the differences we have,
(Qatar) has a great economy and will be doing a lot in the
next five years” do not indicate a potential policy shift,
UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash
insisted that the GCC remained strong despite the rift.
“The political crisis will end when the cause behind it ends
and that is Qatar’s support of extremism and its interference
in the stability of the region.,” Mr. Gargash said, reiterating
long-standing Saudi-UAE allegations.Qatar
signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a
centre for the combating terrorist financing operations
with the participation of GCC countries and the United
States. Qatar also issued a law to combat terrorism and
amended the provisions of other relevant laws in accordance
with international laws related to combating terrorism
and financing
Similarly, United Nations-sponsored peace talks in
Sweden convened with the help of the United States may
at best result in alleviating the suffering of millions as a
result of the almost four-year old Saudi-UAE military
intervention in Yemen but are unlikely to ensure that a
stable resolution of the conflict is achievable without a
lowering of tension between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Even
humanitarian relief remains in question with the parties in
Sweden unable to agree on a reopening of Sana’a airport
to facilitate the flow of aid.
More realistically, with the Trump administration,
backed by Saudi Arabia and Israel, determined to cripple
Iran economically in a bid to force it to alter its regional
policies, if not change the regime in Tehran, chances are
the Yemeni conflict will be perpetuated rather than
resolved. Mr. Rouhani Addressing the 2nd conference of
Parliament Speakers of Iran, said China, Afghanistan,
Pakistan, Russia and Turkey, held in Tehran Our world
today is dealing with complicated challenges, including
weather changes, economic crises, underdevelopment,
aggression and war, poverty and famine, unilateralism,
extremism, and terrorism. Taking advantage of this
opportunity, I would like to express some points regarding
the challenges of the human society: terrorism,
extremism and unilateralism. As the biggest victim of terrorism,
the Islamic Republic of Iran has been facing this
terrorism since its establishment, suffering from heavy
human and financial losses. Terrorist actions such as the
martyrdom of 72 officials in a bombing in 1981 and the
martyrdom of the then President and Prime Minister by
the terrorist in the same year and martyrdom of over
17000 civilians in the past 40 years by terrorist groups
which are under the support of Europe and the Unites
States and Western governments, the martyrdom of
nuclear scientists at the beginning of the current decade,
last year’s terrorist attack to the parliament by the ISIL,
and the recent terrorist attacks in Ahwaz City and
Chabahar two days go, have not undermined the resolve
of the Iranian government and nation for fighting all sorts
of terrorism.Today, security has more dimensions than
the past. It includes areas such as economy, culture, politics,
society and psychological domains, undermining of
each can be described as terrorism. The cruel, illegal economic
sanctions of the United States against the noble
people of Iran has targeted our people as a clear example
of terrorism. Economic terrorism means promoting terror
about the economy of a country and intimidating other
countries to prevent them from doing trade and invest in
the target country. The withdrawal of the United States
from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)
and re-imposition of sanctions, and their measures
against the Islamic Republic of Iran and its trade partners
is the clear example of economic terrorism.
To Yemen’s detriment, Iran is emerging as one of the
foremost remaining shared US-Saudi interests as the two
countries struggle to manage their relationship in the
wake of Mr. Khashoggi’s killing. That struggle is evident
with the kingdom’s Washington backers divided between
erstwhile backers-turned-vehement critics like
Republican senator Graham Lindsey and hardline supporters
such as national security advisor John Bolton. The
jury is out on who will emerge on top in the Washington
debate.
The risks of the Saud-Iranian rivalry spinning out of
control possibly with the support of hardliners like Mr.
Bolton were evident in this week’s suicide bombing in the
Iranian port of Chabahar, an Indian-backed project granted
a waiver from US sanctions against the Islamic republic
to counter influence of China that support the nearby
Pakistani port of Gwadar.
Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister
Mohammad JavadZarif and Revolutionary Guards
spokesman Brigadier General Ramadan Sharif suggested
without providing evidence that Saudi Arabia was complicit
in the attack that targeted the city’s police headquarters,
killing two people and wounding 40 others.
Iran’s allegation of Saudi complicity is partly grounded
in the fact that a Saudi thinktank linked to Prince
Mohammed last year advocated fuelling an insurgency in
the Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchistan that
includesChabahar in a bid to thwart the port development
while Mr. Bolton before becoming US President Donald
J. Trump’s advisor called for US support of ethnic
minorities in Iran.
In a bid to create building blocks for the fuelling of
ethnic insurgencies in Iran, Pakistani militants have said
that Saudi Arabia had in recent years poured money into
militant anti-Iranian, anti-Shiite madrassas or religious
seminaries in the Pakistani province of Balochistan that
borders on Sistan and Baluchistan.
The divergence of US-Saudi interests, agreement on
Iran notwithstanding, was on display in this week’s defeat
of a US effort to get the UN General Assembly to condemn
Hamas, the Islamist group that controls the Gaza
Strip. Saudi Arabia, despite the kingdom’s denunciation
of Hamas as a terrorist organization and its demand that
Qatar halt support of it, voted against the resolution.
The vote suggested that Mr. Trump may be hoping in
vain for Saudi backing of his as yet undisclosed plan to
resolve the Israeli-Palestinian dispute that is believed to
be slanted towards Israel’s position.
Saudi ambassador to the UN Abdallah Al-Mouallimi
said the defeated UN resolution would “undermine the
two-state solution which we aspire to” and divert attention
from Israel’s occupation, settlement activities and
“blockade” of territories occupied during the 1967
Middle East war.
Saudi Arabia’s changing status and the divergence of
longer-term US-Saudi interests was also evident in this
week’s OPEC meeting in Vienna.
To get an OPEC deal on production levels, the kingdom,
once the oil market’s dominant swing producer,
needed an agreement with non-OPEC member Russia on
production levels as well as Russian assistance in managing
Iranian resistance, suggesting
The agreement, moreover, had to balance Mr. Trump’s
frequently tweeted demand for lower prices, and the
kingdom’s need for higher ones to fund its budgetary
requirements and Prince Mohammed’s ambitious economic
reforms and demonstrate that the Khashoggi affair
had not made it more vulnerable to US pressure.
The emerging divergence of US-Saudi interests in part
reflects a wider debate within America's foreign policy
community about what values the United States and US
diplomats should be promoting.
With some of Mr. Trump's ambassadorial political
appointees expressing support for populist, nationalist
and authoritarian leaders and political groups, the fact
that some of the president's closest Congressional allies
back the anti-Saudi resolution illustrates that there are red
lines that a significant number of the president’s supporters
are not willing to cross.
This responsibility is on our shoulders and we can
form a strong bedrock for achieving the causes and
overcome common hardships and threats. As always,
the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to cooperate with
you in carrying out its important civilization mission.
With each day passing, I come to believe more than
before that this mission can be carried out through the
honest efforts of China, Russia, Turkey, Pakistan and
Afghanistan. Rouhani said.
GAZA STRIP:
Palestinian resistance movement
Hamas has marked the
31st anniversary of the first
Intifada with pledges to continue
the "armed struggle"
and rebuked Arab leaders for
seeking to normalize ties
with Israel.
“Armed struggle is a
strategic option to safeguard
the Palestinian cause and
restore Palestinian national
rights,” Hamas said in a
statement issued on
Saturday.
The first Intifada broke
out in 1987 after four young
Palestinians were killed by
Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint
in Gaza as well as the
shooting death of a 17-yearold
boy during an unarmed
protest.
Intifada is anArabic word
that literally translates to
"shaking off." It has been
used to refer to legitimate
means of resistance against
oppression across the Middle
East for decades. In the
Arab-Israeli conflict, it
means a concerted
Palestinian effort to shake off
Israeli occupation and gain
independence.
In its statement on
Saturday, Hamas said “resistance
is a legitimate right
guaranteed by international
laws and conventions.”
It said 31 years after the
eruption of the uprising,
which is also known as the
stone Intifada, Palestinians
are still in need of unity, partnership,
and the reconstruction
of their national project.
The second Intifada
began in 2000 and was
known as the al-Aqsa
Intifada. It was sparked by
former Israeli prime minister
Ariel Sharon’s visit to the al-
Aqsa Mosque complex.
The anniversary comes
amid worldwide outrage
ensuring stability in the
region," the statement said.
Ties between Damascus
and Tel Aviv have been
strained since Russia’s
Yemen peace talks in
Stockholm, Sweden, the
Iranian spokesman said,
“Since the beginning of the
crisis in Yemen, the Islamic
Republic has emphasized
the need for Yemeni-Yemeni
talks away from any foreign
intervention and the ongoing
talks in Stockholm are of a
Yemeni-Yemeni nature.”
A round of talks between
delegations from Yemen’s
Houthi Ansarullah movement
and the country’s former
Saudi-backed government
opened in the Swedish
town of Rimbo on Thursday
under the auspices of the UN
in an effort to find a political
solution to the Yemen conflict
and end a devastating
Riyadh-led war on the country.
over the US relocation of its
embassy to Jerusalem al-
Quds from Tel Aviv and the
recognition of the city as the
so-called capital of Israel.
Israel annexed East al-
Quds in the 1967 Six Day
war in a move never internationally
recognized. The
occupying regime claims the
entire city as its capital.
Palestinians also want it as
the capital of their future
state.
Control of the highly sensitive
city remains one of the
major stumbling blocks in
any Israeli-Palestinian deal.
On Saturday, Hamas
to end the Saudi-led war,
which has killed tens of
its rejection of US President
spiritual ‘healer’ of sex abuse sends foreign minister
BRASÍLIA: Several
women have come forward
in Brazil to accuse an internationally
known self-proclaimed
spiritual healer of
sexually abusing them
under pretext of trying to
“cure” them of depression
or other problems.
The allegations against
Joao Teixeira de Faria, 76,
better known as “Joao de
Deus” (“Joao of God”)
were made late Friday on a
program on the widely
viewed Global Television
network.
A Dutch choreographer
identified as Zahira
Leeneke Maus and nine
Brazilian women who
remained anonymous
accused Faria of making
them masturbate him or
perform fellatio, which he
insisted was the only way
to transfer his “cleansing”
energy to them.
Maus also told the program
that Faria had raped
her.
The associated O Globo
newspaper later reported
that it had spoken to two
other women who gave similar
accounts of sexual abuse
by Faria, bringing the total
to a dozen.
All the women said they
were aged in their 30s when
the alleged acts took place in
Faria’s “spiritual hospital”
in the town of Abadiania,
close to the capital Brasilia.
of Palestinian Authority
ISLAMABAD The
Pakistan Economy Watch
(PEW) on Sunday said
agriculture is the backbone
of the economy, therefore,
it should get the attention it
deserves.
The agriculture sector
contributes around 18 percent
to the GDP, employs
42 percent of the total
labour force, and constitutes
75 percent of the total
exports revenue.
The cost of doing business
for the farmers should
not be increased to improve
share of this critical sector
in the national GDP, it said.
It is impossible to
ensure national development
while keeping agricultural
development on
the backburner, said Dr
Murtaza Mughal, President
PEW.
He said that agriculture
is no more the largest sector
of the economy but it
continues to provide jobs to
the majority of the labour.
Murtaza Mughal said
that growth in this sector
has remained unimpressive
during the last ten years
which proves apathy of the
policymakers.
He noted that the high
cost of inputs continues
to reduce production
which has been contributing
to poverty in the rural
areas.
Circumstances and
some policies continue to
crops while different
with newsrooms and academic
institutions to create a
best practices handbook and
on how to use AI in the
newsroom for journalists
Lab.
After testing with partners
over the last two years,
Google also introduced a
new tool called Google Earth
According to Google, in
the Asia-Pacific, journalists
Hezbollah: No spot in Israel
safe from our missiles
BERUIT: Hezbollah’s
deputy secretary general
says there is no spot across
Israel outside the range of
the Lebanese resistance
movement’s missiles.
“There is not a single
point in the occupied territories
out of reach of
Hezbollah’s missiles,”
Sheikh Naim Qassem told
Tehran-based al-Vefagh
newspaper in remarks published
Sunday.
Israel has launched a
series of operations along
the Lebanese border, and an
Israeli minister has hinted at
possible incursion into
Lebanon in order to destroy
what the regime claims
Hezbollah tunnels.
An Israeli incursion into
Lebanon would likely spark
a major confrontation with
Hezbollah. The Lebanese
resistance movement has
warned that Israel would
"regret" invading Lebanon.
“The Zionists cannot tolerate
such a high level of
threats in confrontation with
Hezbollah, which is why
BERUIT: Hezbollah's Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem
they have no motive for
entering another war with
Lebanon,” Qassem said.
He said the Lebanese
resistance movement has
built such a deterrence
which has prevented Israel
from taking any action
against Lebanon since 2006.
“Even when they threaten
they say, ‘If Hezbollah
attacks us’ they will react,
because the rules of engagement
created in Lebanon by
Hezbollah have made it very
difficult for Israel to even
consider launching a war
against Lebanon,” he said.
Last week, Israel
launched "Operation
Northern Shield" to uncover
and destroy what it claimed
tunnels dug by Hezbollah
into the occupied territory.
Intelligence and transport
minister Israel Katz said
Friday that Israeli forces
may need to go into
Lebanon to deal with the
alleged tunnels.
Israel has waged two
wars against Lebanon in
2000 and 2006. It was
Theresa May warns of 'uncharted waters' ahead of key vote
LONDON: With two
days to go until the crucial
Brexit vote, the prime
minister has warned MPs
they face "uncharted
waters" if they reject her
deal.
Speaking to the Mail on
Sunday, the PM said a
rejection of her proposals
would mean "grave uncertainty"
for the UK.
She warned MPs their
actions could lead to a
general election, and there
was a "very real risk of no
Brexit".
Downing Street has
also denied newspaper
suggestions that Theresa
May could postpone
Tuesday's vote. Last
month, the UK agreed a
Brexit deal with the EU -
but it still needs to be
approved by Parliament.
Labour, the Liberal
Democrats, the DUP, and
dozens of Conservative
MPs have said they cannot
support the deal, meaning
it is unlikely to pass.
Govt’s honeymoon
is over, it’s time to
deliver: Siraj
LAHORE: Jamaat-e-
Islami chief Siraj-ul-Haq
on Sunday said the government’s
honeymoon was
over and it was time for it
to deliver on its promises.
Addressing a ceremony,
Siraj said the government
had made one announcement
after another but it
was time to deliver rather
than making announcements.
The JI leader lamented
that the ministers were
fighting among themselves
and passing statements
against each other. “The
government’s philosophy
is to take U-turns,” Siraj
remarked.
“What steps has the
government taken in the
past four months towards
making the country [like]
the state of Medinah?” he
questioned, adding that
“everyone is worried”
because of the spike in
inflation.
Criticising the ongoing
drive against encroachments
in Karachi and
Lahore, Siraj said there
was “no justice in carrying
out the operation while
being deaf and blind” to
the plight of the poor.
forced to withdraw on both
occasions in the face of
Hezbollah's resistance,
despite inflicting severe
damage on Lebanon's infrastructure.
Qassem also said the
Palestinian resistance has
made Israel face a "new
equation."
Last month, a botched
Israeli intelligence operation
in the Gaza Strip unleashed
brief skirmishes after which
TelAviv accepted a ceasefire
after about 500 rockets were
fired from the besieged territory
at Israeli in a matter of
several hours.
Qassem further said the
situation on the ground in
Syria is improving day by
day, where victories
achieved by the Syrian
Army and its allies are quite
visible now.
He said a political solution
has to be found to the
crisis but the United States is
preventing it through its military
operations in the Arab
country and supporting certain
militant groups.
“Recently, as per court’s directives, the government
Another speaker, the former member National
Assembly Ali Raza Abidi, expressed that our
beloved country needs immediate economic rehabilitation
to overcome its financial crisis which are
greater than before. Since last three months inflation
has increased at rapid rate, a family, which
was managing its day to day affairs within
The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing
AWolf found great
difficulty in getting
at the sheep owing
to the vigilance of the shepherd
and his dogs. But one
day it found the skin of a
sheep that had been flayed
on over its own pelt and
strolled down among the
sheep. The Lamb that
the Wolf in the Sheep’s
Lamb a little apart, he soon made a meal off her, and for some time he succeeded in
deceiving the sheep, and enjoying hearty meals.
Sea Cucumber
Sea cucumbers are echinoderms—like starfish
and sea urchins. There are some 1,250 known
species, and many of these animals are indeed
shaped like soft-bodied cucumbers. All sea cucumbers
are ocean dwellers, though some inhabit the
buried beneath it.
Sea cucumbers feed on tiny particles like algae,
minute aquatic animals, or waste materials, which
they gather in with 8 to 30 tube feet that look like
tentacles surrounding their mouths. The animals
break down these particles into even smaller pieces,
which become fodder for bacteria, and thus recycle
them back into the ocean ecosystem. Earthworms
perform a similar function in terrestrial ecosystems.
Sea cucumbers, particularly eggs and young larvae,
are prey for fish and other marine animals. They
are also enjoyed by humans, especially in Asia, and
some species are farmed as delicacies.
sticky threads to ensnare their enemies. Others can
mutilate their own bodies as a defense mechanism.
They violently contract their muscles and jettison
some of their internal organs out of their anus. The
missing body parts are quickly regenerated.
Sea cucumbers can breed sexually or asexually.
Sexual reproduction is more typical, but the process
is not very intimate. The animals release both eggs
and sperm into the water and fertilization occurs
when they meet.
