Lorena was beginning to get very<br />
tired of sitting in her classroom and<br />
trying to figure out how to help<br />
effect change in her school and<br />
promote best practices in Reading<br />
instruction. Once or twice she had<br />
peeped into the basal program the<br />
district was requiring her to use, but<br />
it had no life. No engagement for<br />
the students. No real life application.<br />
And what is the use of a book,<br />
thought Lorena, without engagement<br />
and connection to student’s lives?
So she was considering, in her own<br />
mind, whether it would be worth the<br />
trouble of talking to her principal<br />
again. After all, Lorena had<br />
discussed with her time and time<br />
again the need for the classrooms to<br />
be stocked with books of all kinds.<br />
relevant and diverse. The need for<br />
teachers to understand the standards<br />
instead of following the prescribed<br />
reading program blindly.
