Chapter 1
Lorena was beginning to get very
tired of sitting in her classroom and
trying to figure out how to help
effect change in her school and
promote best practices in Reading
instruction. Once or twice she had
peeped into the basal program the
district was requiring her to use, but
it had no life. No engagement for
the students. No real life application.
And what is the use of a book,
thought Lorena, without engagement
and connection to student’s lives?

So she was considering, in her own
mind, whether it would be worth the
trouble of talking to her principal
again. After all, Lorena had
discussed with her time and time
again the need for the classrooms to
be stocked with books of all kinds.
relevant and diverse. The need for
teachers to understand the standards
instead of following the prescribed
reading program blindly.
