Otherwise known as the Genji, the
Minamoto clan are blue blooded and fierce
- The Minamoto name is known for their
strong sense of Justice and order.
Minamoto clan was one of the surnames bestowed by the Emperors of
Japan upon members of the imperial family who were demoted into the
ranks of the nobility. The practice was most prevalent during the Heian Period
(AD 794–1185), although its last occurrence was during the Sengoku Era.
The Minamoto clan is also called the Genji.
The first emperor to grant the surname Minamoto was Emperor Saga, who
reportedly had 49 children, resulting in a significant financial burden on
the imperial household. In order to alleviate some of the pressure of supporting
his unusually large family, he made many of his sons and daughters
nobles instead of royals. He chose the word minamoto (meaning “origin”)
for their new surname in order to signify that the new clan shared the same
origins as the royal family.
Known as the Heishi, Clan Taira follow the
way of the samurai, and are warriors of
honor, grace and pride.
Taira clan was a major Japanese clan of samurai. In reference to Japanese
history, along with Minamoto, Taira was a hereditary clan name bestowed
by the emperors of the Heian period to certain ex-members of the imperial
family when they became subjects.
Off shoots of the imperial dynasty, some grandsons of Emperor Kanmu
were first given the name Taira in 825 or later. Afterwards, descendants of
Emperor Ninmyō, Emperor Montoku, and Emperor Kōkō were also given the
surname. The specific hereditary lines from these emperors are referred to
by the emperor’s posthumous name followed by Heishi, e.g. Kanmu Heishi.
House Fujiwara are known for their
intelligence and tactics, but do not make
the mistake of underestimating their fury.
The Fujiwara dominated the Japanese politics of Heian period (794–1185)
through the monopoly of regent positions, sesshō and kampaku.
The family’s primary strategy for central influence was through the marrying
of Fujiwara daughters to emperors. Through this, the Fujiwara would
gain influence over the next emperor who would, according to family
tradition of that time, be raised in the household of his mother’s side and
owe loyalty to his grandfather.
As abdicated Emperors took over power by exercising insei at the end of
11th century, then followed by the rise of warrior class, the Fujiwara
gradually lost its control over mainstream politics. Though their influence
declined, the clan remained close advisors to the succeeding Emperors.
Powerful and Stealthy, the Tachibana
clan are known for their cunning and wit
amongst their fellows.
Tachibana clan was one of the four most powerful kuge (court nobility)
families in Japan’s Nara and early Heian periods. Members of the Tachibana
family often held high court posts within the Daijō-kan (Ministry of
State), most frequently Sadaijin (Minister of the Left).
Like the other major families at court, they also constantly sought to
increase and secure their power by marrying into the imperial family.
However, as the Fujiwara clan gained power over the course of the 9th
and 10th centuries, the Tachibana were eclipsed and eventually became
scattered across the country. Over the course of the Heian period, they
engaged in countless struggles with the Fujiwara family for domination of
court politics.

Cosplay (to move)
You may have seen many different styles of Matsuri in a lot of different
anime and Japanese shows, but have you been to one in person? Come
and join in the festivities while at Tokonatsu by stopping by at our very
own Japanese style festival.
At the festival you will be able to join in the fun by playing many different
festival games run by the staff and our lovely gophers, from
precariously scooping out goldfish to challenging the seven gods of fortune
at the string pull. You can even earn some house points!
You will have the chance to win prizes and create memories with old
friends and new. Be careful though, the sumo suit event has caused more
than enough rivalries!
Ever thought you might look awesome in a Kimono? Then there is an opportunity
to find out right at the festival.
If after all the games and slamming down your best buddy in a sumo suit,
you want some time to chill out there will be TokoCinema run by the fantastic
people over at TokoRetreat, so feel free to head on over, grab a pew
and relax while you watch some old favorites and maybe even discover a
new favorite show.
19
Fancy cosplaying as your favourite character, or perhaps you’d like to show
off a costume of your own design? Then the cosplay events are for you!
As always, there will be Toko’s own Cosplay HQ. Here you can register for
our cosplay events, and if you experience a cosplay break down, you can
fix it up here. If you’re nearby, come down and talk to Foxy about anything
cosplay.
The only Open-air Cosplay Masquerade in the UK! Compete to see who
has the best costume, to show off your hard work (or even just for a
laugh!). Having your costume critiqued by our panel of judges is optional,
and we accept both bought and handmade costumes.
This is one of our most popular events, for veterans and newcomers alike.
The aim is to make a team effort to produce a cosplay out of scraps of
material in a set amount of time. We provide a mystery theme that the
costumes have to be based upon. Due to the nature and popularity of the
event, as well as limited materials, we only have a limited number of places
so be sure to enter the event early.
The TokoMart encompasses the Bring and Buy, Dealers, Artists. And can
be found in the festival area of Tokonatsu. Come and peruse our lovely
selection of wares and hunt down a bargain or two. Patheria and Snarf will
be on hand to offer assistance.
Games - page 22 + 23
As well as the many activities that we have arranged throughout Tokonatsu,
there are some tried and tested events that you’ll recognise from most
Anime Conventions, but given our own Toko twist!
Toko disc is a classic take on American Football, but with a frisbee. Teams
are seen making elaborate strategies that go right out the
window when the whistle blows.
Otaku Royale is a battle royale style game. Players are given a small
amount of supplies and left to fight it out to be the lone survivor. This
means quick truces and even quicker rivalries and players use any means
necessary to be the victor.
Otaku Royale Classique is a team based version of the standard game.
Teams blue and red duke it out to see who can get the most amount of
points in fifteen minutes. This is enhanced with extra ways of scoring
points, hidden around the map.
20
Capture the flag, commonly abbreviated as CTF, is large area game where
two teams each have a flag and the object is to capture the other team's
flag, located at the team's "base," and bring it safely back to their own
base. Teams are broken up into three different roles: Runners, Gunners
and Shield bearers
The game ends when the first team scores 3 points. Each team can have a
maximum of 5 runners and unlimited gunners and bearers.
Guess Who? is a multiple team guessing game. Each team starts the game
with a board that includes images of 24 characters and their first names
with all the images face up. The object of the game is to be the first to
determine which card the opponent team has selected. Teams alternate
asking various yes or no questions to eliminate candidates. The team will
then eliminate candidates by flipping those images down until all but one
is left.
Pictionary is a guessing word game. The game is played with teams with
players trying to identify specific words from their teammates' drawings.
The drawings are based on popular anime, television shows and videogames.
If running around soaking people with water guns isn’t your thing, or you
just fancy a change of pace, then come on over to Traditional Gaming! Be
it board games, card games or role-playing games; there’s something for
everyone. This is a great place to meet new friends, have a good laugh and
earn some extra house points!
16 Players - First come first serve
Battle against your fellow Toko-Goers in a heated Smash up free for all.
You’ll enter as 16 players but only one can emerge victorious, will it be
you?
Standard Format - Players must bring their own deck
Been building an epic Yu-Gi-Oh deck? Come and prove you’re the best!
Test out your skills against fellow talented players. It’s time to dual!
Think you’ve got what it takes to beat a member of the Traditional Gaming
team? We admire your courage. Simply approach a member of the team,
draw a number from the box to determine which game is played, and the
battle is on!
22
After a long day of gaming, challenges and cosplay, why not head over to
one of Tokonatsu’s unique elements - The Campfire!
During this time you do not have to worry about anything. You are done
for the day, there are no points to gain, just be yourself and let the gentle
heat of the fire keep you company along with new and old friends. What
remains is a wisp of calmness and quiet that gently guides you into a restful
state, that will eventually power you for the following day.
The campfire will run as long as we have firewood. Our key volunteers
will be on hand to ensure that everyone is safe. Don’t miss out on such a
unique part of Tokonatsu and don’t forget to pack those
marshmallows!
23
Greetings Tokonatsu!
After a lot of confusion throughout the years about who we are and what we do,
we figured we’d clear things up a bit! To those that follow us online, thank you!
To everyone else, we are the Official Tokonatsu Fan Site.
We started about 10 years ago with the aim to keep the community together
between years, and be a place where you could go and see all the photos from
the festival. Over the years we’ve grown to bringing you events such as The Open
Air Anime Cinema, and the art and writing competitions many of you took part in
last year.
This year, we were asked to come on as Staff, and have worked hard to live up to
this honour, expanding our offerings to the festival! On the next page, you will
find a rundown of what we are offering.
We are also acting as an expansion to the Festival area this year, providing a more
chilled area with a slower pace, and events that aren’t as energy driven. We
understand that sometimes, you need a break from the full on water fights and
extreme Frisbee, and to that end, we’re there for you!
In recent years, we have also found that many of you aren’t quite sure how to approach
us, and that our banners and lights make us intimidating. We assure you
that is not our intent, and we welcome all to come on down and hang with us!
We have always been about fostering good relationships at Toko, and the formation
of friendships that can’t be defined by proximity.
So please join us in making this year’s Tokonatsu one of the best, and come and
say hello at the Toko-R Festival area if you get the chance!
Custom themed Cards Against Humanity deck created by you! You will each
find a card in your con-books, please write what you want on it, include your
memership number and deposit it to the box in the Toko-Retreat festival area.
An hour presensation covering various Japanese Cultural topics. These will be
a brief history of the houses, history of kimonos, traditional tea ceremonies,
brush calligraphy and an otaku phrase guide.
Would you like to show off your creative talents? Come and take part in our
speed writing and art competitions. You’ll get an hour to complete your piece of
work according to this year’s theme, Japanese horror/myths/legends.
Hoshino Libra will be going over some basic art techniques to assist all you fledging
anime artists.
Join Hoshino_Draco as she demonstrates how to make Bubble tea!
A 2 hour RP session using an original system designed by Rezal, set in the fictional
world of Nasadia. No character gen needed, just show up and take part!
The get ready tent is back! And will be hosted in the Toko-Retreat area. Whether
it’s to get ready for that cosplay you’ve been working on, or just getting ready for
the day. Laurios and Yenots have created this space for your convenience.
All of the Anime shown at Tokonatsu is provided by MVM Entertainment.
MVM is unique in the UK Anime industry in it’s multi-level supply, acting
as licensor, distributor, wholesaler and retailer. Their range is always growing
@hibanacon
Greetings from the committee of Hibanacon! The lovely folk of Toko have given us
some space in their conbook to talk to you, their attendees.
The Hibanacon committee are all long-time anime fans and have been attending UK
anime conventions for a decade or more a piece. Over that time we’ve been lucky
enough to:
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
Meet some fantastic people, some of whom have become lifelong friends.
Listen to panels on topics from Yoshiaki Kawajiri to anime cake decorating.
See the outstanding, the brilliant, and the downright most bizarre cosplays.
Party through the late hours with the convention night owls.
Find some of the best and worst bargains around in the bring and buy.
Spend hours in the games room, confused by obscure anime fighting games
Completely lose track of date and time, lost in the convention itself.
Over the years we’ve seen conventions come and go, move around, change
hands, and everything in between. In the post-con comedown we’ve sat around and
discussed our experiences, all it took was spotting a gap in convention schedule to
convince us we could move forward.
We first discussed creating our own convention around 12 years ago, we were younger,
and about 80% less knowledgeable of just how much work it takes. Being poor
students we never pushed out of the idea phase but that kernel of an idea stuck with
us. Years on, we’ve listened a lot, seen a lot, and learned a lot. I won’t say we’re any
more sane now, but we’re finally in the place where we can bring the concept to life.
“But why do we need another anime convention, what
are you doing that’s different?” - that was one of the first
questions we asked ourselves, and the answer is simple. We
wanted to make Hibanacon a convention we’d want to go to
ourselves.
All of the core committee bring a different focus to the event, we love different
things. Whether it’s parties, screenings, games, events, or anything else there’s
someone on the committee with the impetus to push to make things the way we
want them.
We know you're all going to love Toko, having met some of their committee and
seen the passion they have for it, it can't help but be a great event. They've created
something completely unique amongst anime conventions with an atmosphere
to match. When you're done at Toko and looking for another convention
for 2017, the Hibanacon committee would love to see you at Jurys Inn Milton
Keynes this November. What can you look forward to when you’re there?
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
A whole floor of a hotel including our own private bar.
3 nights of parties with a wide range of DJs and styles.
A packed dealers' room.
Over 50 hours of workshops, panels, and events across 3 days.
A packed games room including the president's own DDR machine.
A traditional games room with games provided by Portal Entertainment.
Screenings provided by Anime Limited/Animatsu/Manga Entertainment/
MVM Entertainment.
And much more - Which we’ll be revealing on HibanaCon.co.uk closer to
to the event.
In conclusion, the journey of the Hibanacon committee so far has been one of
discovery. The discovery that every convention committee we’ve seen so far is
a bunch of badasses. They take an impossible dream, wrap it in a special level of
insanity, and then convince people to turn up.
We’re not done yet, but we’re putting in the hours to live up
to the standard set by UK conventions to date and we hope
you’ll join us for the ride. See you all in November.
Hi all!
Well done on making it this far! Everyone has had their own journey
throughout the years, be it from your first time, all the way to being a
Tokonatsu Veteran that came to the original event over 14 years ago.
When I first attended, I was just a regular attendee! I turned up, with a
pair of metal DDR pads (shipped in from America), strapped to the roof of
my ‘G reg’ Vauxhall and a tent that was full of holes!
Years on and here I am, running the festival! My Vauxhall has turned into
one of the many hire vans we have at Tokonatsu, and those poor metal
pads are now an actual arcade machine. And gone is my old tent, replaced
by a tent that can actually withstand the wonderful UK weather.
There aren’t enough words to desribe how incredible the journey has
been so far, but I defintely couldn’t have done it alone.
So thank you to each and every one of you. Tokonatsu couldn’t exsist without
the generosity of the volunteers that spend their free time working to
help create this incredible event. Also to all the attendees that come along
and generate the amazing atmosphere.
I hope you all have a great Tokonatsu!
