The Orchid - Represents Spring. Beautiful
and graceful, yet fragile and gentle. The
orchid celebrates life because it symbolizes
reviving earth’s energy from the winter.
House Ran – The Second Gentleman
Mother of brush painting, representing grace, beauty and a happy spirit.
The wild orchid represents what the Japanese believe to be feminine
virtues – beauty and grace, yet fragile and gentle.
The orchid invites you to celebrate life because it symbolizes reviving the
earth’s energy from the winter.
One famous orchid in Japan is the Neofinetia falcata, which symbols wealth
and nobility. Favoured by the Japaneses royalty for it’s fragrance and
foliage. Samurai warriors would travel for miles in order to find one and
bring it back. It was considered a sign of their bravery if they were able to.

The Plum Blossom - Represents Winter. Perserves
with life and beauty, a leader - the
first to bloom, signalling the end of winter.
House Ume – The Fourth Gentleman
Last of the four gentlemen, represents Winter and is the symbol of hope
and endurance.
Japananses tradition holds that ume functions as a protective charm against
evil, traditionally planted in the north east garden, the direction in which
evil is to come. Eating this fruit is also belived to starve off misfortune.
Representing winter because it persevers with life and beauty within it.
The plum blossoms are the first to bloom, signalling the end of winter.
The beauty of the plum blossom lies in the contrast of the gnarled, rough
trunk and the soft, tender blooms.

The Bamboo - Represents Summer. Strong
in the face of adversity with perfect
balance, upright integrity and tremendous
flexibility.
House Take – The First Gentleman
Known to be the most painted subject in East Asia. Represents the
strength in the face of adversity and what the Japanese believe to be the
virtues of the male – perfect balance, upright integrity and tremendous
flexibility.
Known to be the “perfect gentleman” Because at its center it is hollow,
which suggests modesty and it is always of service and used on a daily
basis.
Symbol of purity and innocence.
In festivals they use bamboo and bamboo grass to ward off evil, one good
example of this is the Tanabata festival where people would write wishes
on strips of paper and hang them on Bamboo grass.
Some shrines also have a Bamboo forest around them to act as a sacred
barrier or wall against evil.

The Chrysanthemum - Represents Autumn.
Sturdy and defies brutality. Also strong and
unwaving.
House Kiku - The Third Gentleman
Representing Autumn as it’s sturdy and it defies the brutality of the frost.
It is also the flower that represents the japanese royal family. It’s
associates fragrant plants with being strong and unwavering with the
change of the season.
It also represents longevity and rejuvenation, when it was introduced to
the royal family they were fascinated with it and thus they used it as their
imperial seal.
This is a very widely used symbol, where it denotes the highest honour
awarded by the Emperor, but you can also find in on money (50 yen),
clothing and various other places.

This year we are incredibly lucky to have our con book sponsored by
SGN. This has helped us free up budget to create an even better event
for you all!
And as in previous years, MVM entertainment has provided us with a
wonderful selection of anime to watch in our very own TokoCinema!
[Check out page 33 for the schedule]
We’d like to thank our sponsors for their generous contributions this
year - and hope to have their continued support in future years.

You may have seen many different styles of Matsuri in a lot of different
anime and Japanese shows, but have you been to one in person? Come
and join in the festivities while at Tokonatsu by stopping by at our very
own Japanese style festival.
At the festival you will be able to join in the fun by playing many different
festival games run by the staff and our lovely gophers, from
precariously scooping out goldfish to challenging the seven gods of fortune
at the string pull. You can even earn some house points!
You will have the chance to win prizes and create memories with old
friends and new. Be careful though, the sumo suit event has caused more
than enough rivalries!
Ever thought you might look awesome in a Kimono? Then there is an opportunity
to find out right at the festival.
If after all the games and slamming down your best buddy in a sumo suit,
you want some time to chill out there will be TokoCinema run by the fantastic
people over at TokoRetreat, so feel free to head on over, grab a pew
and relax while you watch some old favorites and maybe even discover a
new favorite show.

Okaeri nasai mase, Goshujin-sama, Ojou-sama!
Café Kraken is a maid and butler café inspired by those in Japan’s
Akihabara district. These cafés are hosted by a staff of maids and
butlers who serve food and play games with customers while sporting
cute uniforms specially tailored to the theme of the cafe. Maids and
butlers of these cafes also put on performances like popular dances and
songs to further entertain their guests as they dine on food prepared with
love by the staff.
With the popularity of our Cafe last year, we have increased the size! This
means more places to sit, introducing a mix of high and low tables, with
extra room for performances and games.
Let our cute and courteous maids and butlers make you feel at home by
serving delicious tea and cakes, playing games, or perhaps performing a
song and dance routine!
As part of the Tokonatsu community, all proceeds from Café Kraken goes
to the betterment of next year’s festival experience. The more love you
give, the more you get back!

We’d like to say thank you to all our customers who have visited the cafe
this year and last. Your continued support means we can continue to run,
and any donations or gifts ensure a better and easier experience for all.
And we’d like to say a big thank you to all the wonderful Maids and Bulters
who have volunteered to work at the Cafe this year. We could not run
without you and we appreciate all the hard work and skill you bring to the
event. We hope to see you all next year!

Matsuri: Japanese Festival
Fancy cosplaying as your favourite character, or perhaps you’d like to show
off a costume of your own design? Then the cosplay events are for you!
As always, there will be Toko’s own Cosplay HQ. Here you can register for
our cosplay events, and if you experience a cosplay break down, you can
fix it up here. If you’re nearby, come down and talk to the team about
anything cosplay.
The only Open-air Cosplay Masquerade in the UK! Compete to see who
has the best costume, to show off your hard work (or even just for a
laugh!). Having your costume critiqued by our panel of judges is optional,
and we accept both bought and handmade costumes.
This is one of our most popular events, for veterans and newcomers alike.
The aim is to make a team effort to produce a cosplay out of scraps of
material in a set amount of time. We provide a mystery theme that the
costumes have to be based upon. Due to the nature and popularity of the
event, as well as limited materials, we only have a limited number of
places, so be sure to enter the event early.
18

Work in teams to dress up a teammate in a costume! The catch? You’ll have
to find the costume pieces first, and you won’t be able to see what you’re
picking up. Guided by your team, you’ll have to collect the correct piece of
costume whilst blindfolded. If your finished team’s cosplay is the most accurate
to the original source image you were provided with, you win!
Compete in teams to create themed costumes in just 5 minutes, from anything
you can find in our Toko Stash. Show off your creations in the Cosplay
tent, or take them for a spin in one of our sporting events.
Got a hankering for those traditional fashions? Want to appreciate some
traditional clothing? Maybe you want to model or buy some of it yourself?
Tokonatsu’s Kimono Fashion Show is the event for you!
Ever wanted to go on a date with an anime character? Well now you can, with
this Tokonatsu Game Show! We’ve selected the most desirable characters
from anime, Manga and Gaming to be your #1 Waifu or Husbandu for the
evening, all you have to do is sit back, relax and let them Woo you!
Want to try making your own Mecha? Ready
Steady Mecha, a brand new event for Tokonatsu,
is a team effort to produce a Mecha suit out of
cardboard, material and foam in under an hour.
Your final creations will battle it out in order to
be crowned the best mecha of 2018!
A lot of the time when I see articles like this the question is “what is cosplay?” but I think we already have
a grasp of that.
Personally, I’ve always considered cosplay to be about wearing your heart on your sleeve. When I cosplay
a character it’s because they’re a character I like from a series I care about, and I relate to them on some
level. I think that’s part of the reason I still cosplay, as I only find more characters and shows to love. Representing
them through cosplay is like wearing a beacon saying “I love this thing, come and talk to me about
it”. I also feel that in representing those characters you can embody a piece of them.
I’ve asked 4 different cosplayers a few questions to help form an opinion as to why we cosplay and how
different people view it.
Vomit-boi
Why did you start cosplaying?
I started to cosplay because I wanted to dress up to go to my first ever Comic-Con! I think it was 2014 in
May? I’d seen so many cool cosplayers on social media and wanted to be just like them!
Your first cosplay and your favourite cosplay?
My first ever cosplay was Sailor Mercury and to be honest I was quite impressed with it at the time because
I made most of the accessories myself, but now I look back on it, it wasn’t the best.
My favourite cosplay was probably Frisk from Undertale because when I wore it to Comic-Con Undertale
was really popular, and I got a lot of positive attention! Plus it was by far my comfiest cosplay.
Why do you continue to cosplay?
I continue to cosplay because I love making things and improving my skills! For me, the preparation is like
75% of the fun, and I love mixing up characters and putting my own spin on things.
Owldolly
Why did you start cosplaying?
I started cosplaying back in 2013, when a friend got me into the Lucky Star series and wanted to ‘dress
up like the characters’. I had been to a con before but not had the confidence to cosplay, and didn’t really
know what it was! On from there I made more friends and realised how much fun it was. My love for
cosplaying continued from there.
Your first cosplay and your favourite cosplay?
First cosplay; Konata from Lucky Star. I was originally too nervous to do it alone as my friend backed out,
but did it anyway! Now I’m fearless and cosplay anywhere haha!
Favourite cosplay; at the moment I would say Zerotwo as her suit is so comfortable and easy to wear, and it
looks good too. But my favourites change!
Why do you continue to cosplay?
For the past 3 years I’ve really started to take cosplaying
seriously, often doing both professional and relaxed
shoots outside of cons. I love the friendships I’ve
made through my favourite series and I get such a
buzz from portraying my favourite characters.

Emi-Zone
Why did you start cosplaying?
Like most people, I had an early education of anime through hilariously dubbed anime series reruns on
TV - as well as a fairly broad gaming upbringing thanks to my family. When a close school friend mentioned
what was Telford MCM at the time I figured I’d join in, so I bought a Kairi costume from eBay and hoped for
the best. The best wasn’t really the outcome but I had such an amazing time that I’ve never looked back
since.
Your first cosplay and your favourite cosplay?
I had just finished Kingdom Hearts 2 and I loved Kairi’s dress a little bit too much. Unfortunately I didn’t
know anything about wigs so I opted to spray dye my hair red for the event it wasn’t the worst thing
ever but it’s also something I don’t tend to talk about XD
Favourite cosplay is a bit tough, I’ve made so many cosplays now, I typically only cosplay a character if
I love them to some degree. I think my favourite currently though would have to be lady bug from The
Miraculous Ladybug series. I worked especially hard on creating the costume and I love wearing her. She’s
very comfortable and easy to move in but she also stands for a lot of positive things and I love seeing the
reaction around children

Games - page 22 + 23
As well as the many activities that we have arranged throughout Tokonatsu,
there are some tried and tested events that you’ll recognise from most
Anime Conventions, but given our own Toko twist!
Toko disc is a classic take on American Football, but with a frisbee. Teams
are seen making elaborate strategies that go right out the
window when the whistle blows.
Otaku Royale is a battle royale style game. Players are given a small
amount of supplies and left to fight it out to be the lone survivor. This
means quick truces and even quicker rivalries and players use any means
necessary to be the victor.
Otaku Royale Classique is a team based version of the standard game.
Teams blue and red duke it out to see who can get the most amount of
points in fifteen minutes. This is enhanced with extra ways of scoring
points, hidden around the map.
20

Capture the flag, commonly abbreviated as CTF, is large area game where
two teams each have a flag and the object is to capture the other team's
flag, located at the team's "base," and bring it safely back to their own
base. Teams are broken up into three different roles: Runners, Gunners
and Shield bearers
The game ends when the first team scores 3 points. Each team can have a
maximum of 5 runners and unlimited gunners and bearers.
Guess Who? is a multiple team guessing game. Each team starts the game
with a board that includes images of 24 characters and their first names
with all the images face up. The object of the game is to be the first to
determine which card the opponent team has selected. Teams alternate
asking various yes or no questions to eliminate candidates. The team will
then eliminate candidates by flipping those images down until all but one
is left.
Pictionary is a guessing word game. The game is played with teams with
players trying to identify specific words from their teammates' drawings.
The drawings are based on popular anime, television shows and videogames.

The true backbone of the event; the loyal gopher. Being a gopher takes
skill, committment and lots of energy. But it sure is fun!
For those that do not have any idea how festivals and conventions run, the
majority of the organisation and planning for the event, are done by the
committee which sit there pulling their hair out every day before, during,
and
after the event to bring you the best possible weekend we can. However,
there are so many different tasks to do during the event itself, that it is
impossible for the committee to do them. That is where the “Gopher”
comes in.
“Gopher” started out life within the early stages of the Anime scene, possibly
before, as a volunteer staff member, who would go and fetch things,
or “go for” something.
At Tokonatsu, not only will games and participation in the events get you
your “House Points”, but so will being a gopher! Plus extra goodies for
helping out.
We’d like to take a moment to thank all of our gophers for this year and
previous years, without you this event would be nowhere near what it is
today - So from the bottom of our hearts, thank you very much, and we
hope to see you again next year!

After a long day of gaming, challenges and cosplay, why not head over to
one of Tokonatsu’s unique elements - The Campfire! Where else will you
find a large fire that is actually meant to be there rather than frantically
being put out by the local fire department!
During this time you do not have to worry about anything. You are done
for the day, there are no points to gain, just be yourself and let the gentle
heat of the fire keep you company along with new and old friends. What
remains is a wisp of calmness and quiet that gently guides you into a restful
state, that will eventually power you for the following day.
The campfire will run as long as we have firewood. Our key volunteers
will be on hand to ensure that everyone is safe. Don’t miss out on such a
unique part of Tokonatsu and don’t forget to pack those marshmallows!

Greetings Tokonatsu!
This year Toko-Retreat returns to bring you more events than ever before!
For those of you that are new, or may not have heard of us in the
past, here is a bit about us;
We started about 10 years ago with the aim to keep the community
together between years, and be a place where you could go and see all
the photos from the festival. Over the years we’ve grown to bringing you
events such as The Open Air Anime Cinema, and the art and writing competitions
many of you took part in over the last couple of years.
We have since been taken on as staff, and have been working hard to live
up to this honour! We have expanded the number of events and panels
that we offer each year, and you will find details of such in the following
pages.
As well as all this, we now act as an expansion to the Festival area, providing
a more chilled area with a slower pace, and events that aren’t as energy
driven. We understand that sometimes, you need a break from the full
on water fights and extreme Frisbee, and to that end, we’re there for you!
In recent years, we have also found that many of you aren’t quite sure
how to approach us, and that our banners and lights make us intimidating.
We assure you that is not our intent, and we welcome all to come on
down and hang with us! We have always been about fostering good relationships
at Toko, and the formation of friendships that can’t be defined
by proximity.
So please join us in making this year’s
Tokonatsu one of the best, and come say
to hello at the Toko-R Festival area if you
get the chance!

It’s a secret!
Come find us at Toko-Retreat and pick up your copy of the quiz. Take it
away, fill it in, and bring it back for the chance to win some house points!
In the spirit of keeping things fair, please no using the internet to cheat!
We bring you a special treat this year in the way of a martial arts demonstration
led by DragonWolf!
Join Hoshino_Draco as she demonstrates how to make Bubble Tea!

This year the panel will be led by Rebby, with a presentation
on what life is like living in modern day Japan!
Show off your creative talents and take part in our speed writing and art
competitions. You will get 1 hour to complete your piece of work
according to this year’s theme Ready Player One!
This year, we’ll be running a Colouring-in contest along side the Art
contest for those that don’t fancy themselves the next Picasso!
(winners of the previous year’s contest cannot enter)
This year we bring you an all new event in collaboration with the
events team! Sign up as either a Zombie or a Survivor and take part in
this fun variant on British Bulldog!
A 2 hour RP session using an original system designed by Rezal, set
in the fictional world of Nasadia. No Character Gen needed, just
show up and take part! (Max 6 players)

All of the Anime shown at Tokonatsu is provided by MVM Entertainment.
MVM is unique in the UK Anime industry in it’s multi-level supply, acting
as licensor, distributor, wholesaler and retailer. Their range is always growing
and they have a range of new titles available every month. Find out
It’s the Hibanacon Committee again. We hope you’re having a lovely time
at Tokonatsu!
[Although knowing when the average con-goer reads conbooks, a nice
journey back from Toko might be more apt.] The lovely folks at Toko have
given us a bit of space here to talk to you, and we do love talking to people.
In case you haven’t heard Hibanacon is running again this November! We
had so much fun last time, we thought we’d come back for a second bite
at the cherry. So what do we have for you? How does three days of events
at the lovely Jurys Inn in Milton Keynes sound? We have parties every
night,
a masquerade, and the Hibanacon Cosplay Ball. We also have guests: Paul
Flannery (of the Knightmare Live stage show), plus the returning Jollyboat.
On top of all this we’re hard at work organising three days of panels, workshops,
and even dance lessons to give you a fantastic weekend.
We hope to see
you there!
Italian pizza.
We put a lot of care and love in our products, try it and you’ll not be dissapointed.
That’s why our customers keep coming back for more. Quality is
our best recommendation.
From Canada Water, in London, Hachoo Bubble Tea is founded by Chingy
and Han Ye. They are both scientists that love drinking bubble tea! So they
though they would share our experience and give a personal insight into
consuming this delicious drink in the UK as well as around the world!
Hachoo first came up with the idea of selling bubble tea kits when they
moved to Hertfordshire. They found there were not many bubble tea
shops around. So they decided to make their own.
Hi all,
Normally this space would be used for our wonderful Chairman [Myst] to
write to you and thank you for attending Tokonatsu. He is very much
thankful for everyone’s hard work, support and attendance at this years
event - but this time, we’ve hijacked the page!
This is an extra special Tokonatsu, not only because it’s the 15th
Anniversary, but because it’s also Colin’s [Myst] 10th year as Chairman.
That’s right, 10 years!
Colin uses so much of his free time (and santity) to organise and bring
everyone together to create this event. And we couldn’t be more thankful.
Every year he encourages and supports us, making Tokonatsu that little
bit better with each year that passes. Though with any event, things are
bound to go a little wrong sometimes, but Colin is always there to listen
and provide a plan B.
Tokonatsu would be nowhere near the event it is today without his
leadership and passion. So from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you
Colin, for all your hard work, for all the free time you’ve sacrificed, and for
all the injures you’ve obtained throughout the years.
Here’s to the best Tokonatsu yet, and the many more that will follow!
The Tokonatsu Committee and Staff
