Almighty God, we pray that your kingdom may come, but we feel
so inadequate to help in its realization. Come to us again with the
reminder that like the mustard seed and the yeast you can use our
small talents for large purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The Offertory Prayer
Father in heaven, we know that it is not the size of our gifts that
count, but the spirit in which they are given. Accept these gifts we
pray, and our complete devotion to you and your kingdom.
LOVE LIFTED ME
(African American Heritage Hymnal #504)
I was sinking deep in sin, Far from the peaceful shore,
Very deeply stained within, Sinking to rise no more;
But the Master of the sea Heard my despairing cry,
From the waters lifted me— Now safe am I.
All my heart to Him I give, Ever to Him I’ll cling,
In His blessed presence live, Ever His praises sing.
Love so mighty and so true Merits my soul’s best songs;
Faithful, loving service, too, To Him belongs.
Souls in danger, look above, Jesus completely saves;
He will lift you by His love Out of the angry waves.
He’s the Master of the sea, Billows His will obey;
He your Savior wants to be— Be saved today.
Chorus
Love lifted even me, Love lifted even me,
When nothing else could help, Love lifted me;
Love lifted even me, Love lifted even me,
When nothing else could help, Love lifted me.
The Wall of Honor
Hope’s Wall of Honor is an everlasting tribute to our Veterans. It was designed and
donated to Hope by Brother Sid Taylor, a US Marine, Vietnam combat veteran and
beloved member of Hope. It is a memorial tribute to commemorate the sacrifices our
veterans have made for our country. We are grateful to Sid and his family for blessing
us all with the beautiful Wall of Honor.
New names are added to the Wall of Honor every Veteran’s Day. If you, a loved one, or
a friend served in the armed forces and would like to be added to the Wall, please
complete the Wall of Honor form located in the Literature Rack and place it in the Wall of
Honor mailbox outside the Sanctuary. God bless you.
I couldn't wait for high school. I'd be
going to Crossland High School and
I'd join the band. Get a girlfriend.
Make the honor roll. Well, all I can
say is it was great being in the
band!
Crossland was the best experience
ever! My homies Kenneth, Edwin,
Joey, Phar, Scott, and Richard. We
were tight! They made the journey
so much better. All we did was laugh, talk junk, share the load and stuff like that. It
was the best of times. Until, then... My mother tells me that we have to
move! What!?!?!? We have to move?!?!?!? I was devastated. I hated the idea of
moving away from what was clearly the best school in the universe. We got each
other at Crossland. We were all intellectual and nerdy and smart and all that. Yup, I
was being severed from perfection.
Then, the next year, my junior year I'd attend Theodore Roosevelt High School. It was
in DC. The building wasn't as modern and cool as Crossland's. Crossland student
body was 1600 and Roosevelt's was 1100. Roosevelt felt like a ghost town. It was
also in the hood. There were numerous suspensions, crime issues, drug deals in the
halls, an abundance of teen age pregnancy. It was not quite what I was expecting and
it was NOTHING like Crossland.
I was so alone those first few months. I was bitterly alone. I sat on the stairwell, on
the side of the school, where no one was and hung out there during lunch. Seemingly,
I no longer had a group to walk with, to hang with. I was miserable. But, there was a
band and I decided to join it and give it a try. I played flute and clarinet at Crossland,
this time, they wanted me on the Sax. So, I had a new family. I had a new group of
saxophone players. We were all a team, a family.
11
I grew to love Roosevelt. This band was the hardest experience ever. We fought all
the time! I mean, literally fought! We took up for each other all the time. I mean, all
the time. We hung out together, all the time. I mean, all the time. Tragedies were
shared.
Today, I'm far more connected with Roosevelt alumni and they with me than I am
with Crossland's alumni. What am I getting at? Change is hard. Change is not
always understood, initially. Sometimes, its years before we are able to see the
benefit of a drastic difficult change.
We, at Hope are no stranger
to change. Yet, we've
endured. There are more
changes to come. They will
bless us!
Are you ready?
Put your helmets on, fasten
your seatbelts and lets get
ready for the ride. God is the
driver! Let's gooo!!
Crossland
Cavaliers. Roosevelt Rough
Riders. I'm so blessed to have
had both experiences. I'm
grateful for my changes! I
say!!
