lockportlegend.com life & arts the Lockport Legend | August 17, 2017 | 17 Golf outing raises money for Lockport residents in need Lockport Love raises money ahead of annual December giveaway Amanda Del Buono Freelance Reporter Friday morning, community members, police officers, firefighters and local business members came together for a day on the golf course in support of Lockport Love, a nonprofit charity organization. The four-year-old charity hosted its fourth annual golf outing at Broken Arrow Golf Course Friday, Aug. 11. The event included golfing, breakfast provided by McDonald’s located at 16519 W. 159th Street in Lockport, lunch provided by Nicky’s Gyros of Lockport, and dinner provided by Sizzles of Lockport. In addition to food and golfing, attendees were invited to try their luck in raffles for nearly 40 baskets of prizes. All of the baskets in the raffle were donated by local community members, businesses and organizations, said BJ Ferry, treasurer of Lockport Love. “The golf outing has gone well,” she said. “It’s a fun event. … We don’t have a goal, we’re happy with what we get. Just having people give to us is a big deal.” Many of the raffle items were donated by local businesses, schools and organizations. Additionally, community members like Patti and Jack Pastore — who donated two Bears tickets to the Lockport Love’s golf outing, — also provided prizes. With about 100 golfers participating this year, the annual golf outing is the organization’s most important fundraiser of the year, as it raises the most money to support the cause, according to Ferry. With the support of community members and businesses, Lockport Love raises money throughout the year to help families in need during the holiday season. From paying electric bills to buying Christmas gifts, Lockport Love is dedicated to providing assistance to the community. And as the charity continues to grow, it is always looking for more help. “This is the community,” Ferry said. “… Lockport Love is neighbors helping neighbors. We’d love to see the Lockport community getting more involved, and we need it.” Each year, Lockport Love helps more families as it continues to gain support from the community. Among those present at the event were many Lockport police officers. “The neat thing is to see charitable organizations helping each other, because several members of the Lockport police benevolent group are here to help Lockport Love with fundraising, and they just did a fundraiser for their benevolent group,” Ferry said. “They just did a golf outing and now they’re here to help us.” Among the Lockport police officers present, Debbie Schenk came to golf and also brought seven other people along to support the charity at the event. “I enjoy golfing, and I enjoy the fact that all of the money goes back to the residents of Lockport,” she said. “It’s something I look forward to. There’s a variety of people here, not just from the police department, but people from the community and other communities nearby come to help this community.” Bert Thompson, a Lockport resident who volunteers at Lockport Love, said more local businesses should get involved. “We’re looking for other businesses to get involved,” said Thompson, who also is the vice president at O’Hare Towing. “… What I like about it is it’s actually giving back directly to the community. I see where the money goes. I like that we don’t spend money on overhead, nobody makes any money, and I like that in December we directly see the difference [we’re] making. … When you see that, it makes it all worth it. “The best part is we don’t give them cash,” he continued. “Our help comes in the way of paying an electric bill, paying a gas bill, or paying rent. … We make sure the funds get used the way they’re supposed to be used.” Lockport resident Pete Colarelli is the government and public affairs manager for Citgo Petroleum Corp., which has consistently supported Lockport Love. “This is a great organization. Citgo supports many charity organizations, but Lockport Love is relatively new, and it fits well in our focus areas of helping people in need,” he said. “… We also have a volunteer component. We try to help by providing volunteers and support.” Those interested in supporting or learning more about Lockport Love can reach out to Police Chief Terry Lemming or BJ Ferry by visiting the Lockport Police Station. The charity will be accepting nominations for families in need from social workers, priests, pastors and ministers through the end of October.
