“Do stuff. Be clenched, curious. Not waiting for inspiration’s shove or society’s kiss on your forehead. Pay attention.
It’s all about paying attention. Attention is vitality. It connects you with others. It makes you eager. Stay eager.”
-Susan Sontag, American writer, film-maker, teacher, and political activist

What we are working on right now
Through careful analysis and holistic approaches, we hope to define new pathways, identify new targets and
gain mechanistic insight into the relationship between our environment, our genes and the microbiome.
It has been known that diet is one of the biggest factors that can influence
the microbiome,” DePaolo says, adding that while it’s “amazing to
see how one thing can change the architecture of the gut,” the nutritional
education of one’s microbiome takes time. “Your diet has to slowly change
your microbiome. If you just take a new microbiome and try to stick it in
with a Western diet biome, the consequences can be quite severe.”
UW partnerships right now
UW GNOTOBIOTIC ANIMAL CORE (GNAC)
GNAC has successfully rederived germ-free mice for one of the strains
in DePaolo Lab. CMiST will aggressively promote GNAC’s services
and use them exclusively for all CMiST collaborative projects requiring
germ-free mouse models.
GLOBAL WACH
CMiST and Global WACh (women, adolescent and child health) will
host an annual microbiome workshop with invited speakers and
poster session. The inaugural event will be early spring 2018 (date
TBD).
THE WHOLE U
CMiST has developed a nutrition talk series for the Whole U for both
UW faculty and staff, but also the general community, that will
begin June 2017. Will is going to present on various “hot topics,”
including probiotics, fad diets and food additives, and their impact
on the gut microbiome. This talk series will set the foundation for a
collaborative four-week program for UW faculty and staff during
National Nutrition Monday, March 2018.
The Whole U and Nutrition Services have offered their support
for small talks for IBD patients and their families in the CMiST office
suite.
The Whole U, UW Medicine Nutrition Services (Dir. Chuck Zielinski),
HR (Mindy Kornberg, VP UW HR) and CMiST will work together
to submit an NIH P01 program grant together in 2018.
UW SCHOOL OF ART (UW SOA)
CMiST and several UW School of Art (UW SOA) faculty will work together
to develop an art and science curriculum for the 2018 UW undergraduate
Early Fall Start program. This will be a four-week intensive
at the Friday Harbor Laboratories on San Juan Island. This course will
be lead by faculty from various fields of art and science. The program
will culminate in a final two-day symposium.
CIIID
CMiST and The Center for Innate Immunity and Immune Disease will
continuously promote one another and collaborate on a variety of
projects.
Industry partnerships right now
TACONIC BIOSCIENCES
Taconic Biosciences, an industry leader in rodent models for over 60
years, has approached CMiST for future collaboration as they continue
to develop and refine their microbiome portfolio.
Our values
THINK DEEPLY
Too often the road with the least resistance is taken,
but true innovation means looking past the obvious
and not accepting answers at face value. Being able
to think deeply means being open to all possibilities,
thinking outside of the box and understanding that
defining the relationship between our cells and our
microbes has far reaching consequences that impact
global health.
CULTIVATE RELATIONSHIPS
Cures begin with passion, but not one person can do it alone.
Opening up a dialogue between clinicians and scientists
may seem like a no-brainer, but for two occupations working
towards the same goal, sometimes it’s as if they are speaking
different languages.
From our location on the UWMC campus and under the
Department of Medicine, CMiST will provide a resource and
a forum by which clinicians and scientists can share their
work, their experiences and develop scientific relationships
that will not only benefit one another, but also our patients.
EMBRACE CREATIVITY
To create cutting-edge technologies, pioneer scientific
breakthroughs and develop new lines of biotherapeutics
creativity is key. CMiST will provide an environment
where creativity and innovation thrive in order
to inspire its members and educate the community.
FACILITATE DISCOVERY
In order to understand a complicated organ like the intestine
and its microbial inhabitants a multidisciplinary team of investigators
and cutting edge technologies is needed. CMiST
will act as a catalyst to allow the exchange of ideas.
always
