LEARNER TEACHER SUPPORT MATERIAL
Independent Learning provides a selection of play-based learning activities that supports incidental learning, active participation and creates opportunities for learners
to acquire and generalise skills at their own pace. The learning activities ensure that individualisation can take place and because of the concrete nature it also serves
as assessment tools.
The selected material all has outcomes that align to developmental principals and promote specific
academic skills in a fun and colourful way. All the materials provide concrete hands-on activities that
are engaging, captivating and motivating. These materials ensure that children learn new skills with
great enthusiasm.
Finland’s education system is currently number 1 in the world for the simple reason that they have
gone back to the basics. The success in Finland has been attributed to the fact that all children
learn through play and active participation.
These learning activities have been compiled specifically for schools specialising in ASD and
Developmental Delays but the content is also relevant for early intervention centres.
IN ASSOCIATION
WITH
Each kit has been carefully compiled by Reinette Lombard (Remedial therapist) with over 15 years
of practical experience in ASD, General Special Needs Education and Child Development.
Reinette is also a mom of two boys and believes in the power-of-play.
The activities are all manufactured to the highest European and North American standards,
many of which have won prestigious prizes for innovation around the world.

OUTCOMES
To support each child to establish
membership in the class while developing
a classroom community and culture. The
primary purpose is for each child to develop
a sense of emotional safety. Through 4
Components: greeting, sharing, group activity,
news and announcements. Gives children
daily practice with :
- tracking the date, day of the week, month,
season and weather
- making plans and scheduling activities
- group participation and shared
enjoyment
MORNING RINGS
Morning ring is teacher directed time where children share news, discuss the calendar and
weather and interesting topics. It allows time for a balanced education programme to
develop and encourage independence, critical thinking, problem solving, self-discovery
and the development of basic academic skills for all learning.
Children are encouraged to work together, try for themselves, explore and discover
the world around them.

Children are encouraged to engage

them interacting with many different
concrete learning tools.
Through play children begin to learn :
- the meaning and rules of language
- how to acquire information, evaluate it,
and ethically use it
- how to construct meaning from
various kinds of learning tools and
- how to communicate effectively
Literacy also means preparing children
to be critical and ethical consumers
of information.
LITERACY
Literacy is the ability, confidence and willingness to engage with language* to acquire,
construct and communicate meaning in all aspects of daily living.
There is a strong focus on the development of reading and writing skills.
*Language is explained as a socially and culturally constructed system of communication.

OUTCOMES 1
Quantitative information refers to
information that can be measured
and expressed as an amount.
This includes :
- having a sense of the magnitude of
numbers
- using numbers in real-life situations
- estimating amounts
- interpreting statistical information
- recognizing patterns
- determining probability
physical location of objects or people,
or the relationship between them.
This includes :
- understanding shape and space
- measuring time, weight, height or amounts
- determining location and direction
- interpreting and creating maps and
schematic diagrams
- visualizing shapes from different
perspectives
OUTCOMES 2Spatial information refers to the
NUMERACY
Numeracy is the ability, confidence
and willingness to engage with quantitative
and spatial information to make informed decisions
in all aspects of daily living. A numerate individual has
the confidence and awareness to know when and
how to apply quantitative and spatial understandings
at home, at school, at work or in the community.

COMPILATION BOXES
The Compilation boxes consist of concrete resources (tools and materials) that assist with learning and
generalisation of key skills through visual reinforcement that includes both objects and pictures and assist in
developing language, cognitive and social skills.
Below you will find selected materials for each age group that help support and encourage the development
of key skills. Compilation boxes contain assorted Activities that can be used for group and individual work.
These activities are specifically selected to align to the National Curriculum and offer learners an opportunity
to participate actively and independently in their own learning. These activities ensure that individualisation
can take place.
The activities are an extension of the Outcomes set out in Morning ring, Literacy and Numeracy boxes.
