If it wasn 't for the exhilarating voice of the muezzin (prayer caller) we would not have been able to wake up from our jet-lagged sleep in Istanbul, city of dreams. The view from the hotel was competing for our attention. We were almost under the shadows, and certainly under the spell of the minarets of the Blue Mosque and Aya Sophia in old Isranbul. A Boat cruise along the Bosphorus Strait, which runs between the two continents, Asia and Europe, revealed this city's beauty even more. Aya Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, Cistern, Grand Bazaar, Chora Museum, are all remarkable places to visit. The Blue Mosque, with its 20 thousand Iznik blue tiles and six minarets, is a unique structure. We travelled to the Marmara University where we met Professor Beril Anilanmert, an internationally renowned artist who presented a slide show of contemporary Turkish ceramics. We were also given a guided lOur of the ce ramics department. It was a big surprise to see the work of my former lecturer from the Sydney College of the Arts, Mitsuo Shoji, in the ceramics department. He had been a visiting lecturer earlier in 1998. Iznik and Kutahya are well known cities famous for their low fired material which is composed of white clay and glassy matter with a carefully prepared porcelain-like surface. Repetitive patterns are painted on surfaces before a transparent alkaline glaze is applied. Mr. Sitki Oleay, a well known artist in Kutahya, has been using this same technic and repetitive patterns in his work. He showed us his ceramic atelier and his 17th Century Iznik tiles. works. He also demonstrated th e centuries old turqUOise glaze technique using a reduced copper oxide glaze applied on to white clay. Bursa, first capital of the Ottoman Empire, is famous for its thennal baths, Green Mosque and Ulu Mosque. Travelling south west to Ankara we stopped at Eskisehir and had intended to visit Professor Zehra CobanJi, Head of the ceramics department, at the University of Anatolia. Unfortunately she was unaware of this but we were provided with a guided tour of the department by a staff member and shown her private gallery. Zehra runs free ceramic workshops for interested artists from all around the world - accommodation and materials are also free. In Turkey's modern capital Ankara, the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations is a must for every trJveller. Cappadocia is one of the most fantastic landscapes on earth. The fairy chimneys give a surrealistic atmosphere to landscape. Similarly the underground city of Kayma kli is another extraordinary feature of the Turkish landscape. It was used by early Christians to escape persecution by the Romans. The city at this time had 20,000 inhabitants. Turkish ceramic artist, Galip was already demonstrating his traditional kick-wheel to another group when we have arrived at his studio in Avanos. He asked one of us to continue throwing but it was not as easy as it seemed! Finally our volunteer managed to make a small pot and in return we were all given a small present. Galip's pots are finished using the traditional repetitive patterns of lznik tiles. On the way to Konya, the city of whirling dervishes, 38/2 JUNE 1999 + POnERY IN AUSTRAUA 41
we saw one of the oldest caravanserai in Anatolia . In Konya we visited Mevlana museum with it' beautiful rurquoL,e tiles and the museum of Seljuk ceramics. The museum was a madrasa (religious school) in the 12th century. At night we were all enthralled by the whirling dervishes ceremony. After recharging socially and visually in Antalya, we stopped at Karacasu which is famous for its red clay pot
