How to Clean Your
Home Carpet Without a
Vacuum

For most, the cleaning of carpet is believed to require a vacuum. These
heavy, bulky machines have improved in usability over the last few decades,
but remain difficult to use or too expensive for those living in small spaces,
crowded apartment buildings or dormitories and shared spaces. So, how
can you keep your carpet clean without a vacuum?

Brooms & Dustpans
Many would not consider using a broom on carpet, but it can actually
be an easy and fairly effective method of cleaning, especially in small
areas. Use short strokes in a single direction on carpets with a low nap
to accomplish cleaning, or consider investing in a carpet broom. These
specialty housekeeping items are great for quick and quiet cleaning.
Sponges or Sponge Mops
Another unconventional choice, using a wet sponge or sponge mop on
carpet to gently scrub stains or dirty areas can be highly effective.
Sponges can pick up animal fur, hair, dirt and other debris. The only
drawback to this method is that it can be very time- consuming,
especially if your carpet retains water or you are interested in cleaning
a large area.

Lint Rollers
Another great option for small spaces, rugs or carpets with a low
nap, lint rollers do a great job at picking up dirt, dust, hair and other
lightweight debris. Larger pieces should be picked up by hand
before using a lint roller, and the adhesive surface must be changed
frequently if cleaning an area of more moderate size.
Small Sweepers
Lightweight, nonelectric carpet and floor sweepers have been used
to clean small messes for decades. The pickup power of these
sweepers is modest at best, but they also don ’ t risk tearing or
otherwise damaging more delicate carpets and rugs. The best part?
These devices typically cost less than $50, which is one-third or less
the price of fully-featured electric vacuums.

Shake It Out or Take It Out
If the carpet you’re looking to clean is an area rug or other
small, removeable sectional piece, the option of taking the
rug outside or to another area to shake out the debris or dirt
is also one worth considering. This method can be messy
and labor-intensive, especially if you have several pieces or
large rugs to clean. However, many people swear by a good
shake-up every so often for their carpets and rugs.

Hire it Out
If you really don’t like cleaning but need it done, there is also the option
of hiring a professional cleaning service or housekeeper to take care of
the carpet cleaning for you. This is a good option for those with no time
to clean or who can’t physically perform necessary tasks.
As you can see, there are many ways to keep your carpets and rugs
looking and feeling fresh without using a vacuum. Whether you choose
to go with a carpet broom, a lint roller or a good, hard shake every now
and then, it ’ s best to clean messes promptly and attend to upkeep
regularly, to extend the life of your carpeting and keep that fresh, clean
feeling all year around.
