From the Chair
Patience. Perseverance. Compassion. Support. Experience.
All these qualities will be needed in the upcoming year as our country and state deal with
massive economic troubles. Health care, like education and social services, will need to
make substantial cuts because of the economic turmoil.
Programs that care for the poor and marginalized in our
society will receive diminished funding. The safety net for
children and the elderly will most likely be diminished.
That means our commitment to serve the “dear neighbor”
is needed more than ever.
For nearly 80 years, St. Joseph Hospital’s ability and
willingness to support those most in need has never
waivered. The faith demonstrated and put into action by
the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange continues through
good times and bad. Through our Care for the Poor
programs, we provide the best quality medical services
to those who would otherwise do without. Our four core values of
excellence, service, dignity and justice serve as the milestones we
must meet.
While most agencies that receive some form of federal or state
funding will be tightening their belts, there is no doubt that we will
continue to serve those most in need. But we will need your help.
Through your generous support, we can do our part to see
that a young girl with an ear infection gets early treatment...before
her hearing is damaged. We can see that an expectant mother
receives appropriate prenatal care to help ensure that her child
will be born healthy. We can make sure that a diabetic grandfather
continues to monitor his disease and takes appropriate steps to
prevent devastating problems. We can do all of this because of
you. Your gifts and support make a profound difference in the lives
of thousands of people every year.
Our donors are among the most caring and generous people I
have ever met. While there is no doubt that we will be facing hard
times over the coming year, I truly believe that St. Joseph Hospital
will continue to serve “the dear neighbor” in the immediate future
and for generations to come.

Without hope there is no future. That was not
an option for Clara Palacios. She has clung to hope
mightily for the last three years – if not
for most of her life.
One morning in March 2006, Clara awoke to
start another day as a healthy, single mother to her
18-year-old son, Jair, and 11-year-old daughter, Yacti.
Little did Clara know that day, her life was about
to be changed forever. She began to have severe
abdominal pain. Having recently lost her job and without insurance, she didn’t know where to
turn. Friends recommended she go immediately to the Emergency Department at St. Joseph
Hospital. The news wasn’t good.
Upon examination, doctors found she was having a gallbladder attack and, through an
ultrasound, discovered a mass on her left ovary. She was treated and referred to La Amistad
de Jose Family Health Center – St. Joseph Hospital’s community clinic – for follow-up. Clara
met with internal medicine specialist, Julia Motherway, M.D., who gave her a full exam.
Neither of them expected to find another medical issue: a lump on her left breast. The news
was devastating. As the world was seemingly spinning out of control, Clara held on to hope,
determined to get through the tough times ahead. After all, she still had two children to raise.

Dr. Motherway referred Clara to general surgeon Sami Hamamji, M.D., who consulted with
gynecological surgeon Bedros Kojian, M.D., to remove Clara’s gallbladder and ovaries in a
single surgery. Clara was then referred to breast surgeon Jay Harness, M.D., oncologist Nabil
Phillips, M.D., and radiation oncologist, May Lin Tao M.D., who set up her treatment plan for

From the President
Next month St. Joseph Hospital celebrates its 80th Anniversary! During these past years,
medical technology has certainly advanced far beyond the wildest dreams of our founding
Sisters; however, no amount of time and no challenge too great can ever alter their rich
devotion to caring for The Dear Neighbor. Indeed, despite a national flu epidemic in
1918, the stock market crash of 1929 and World War II, our Sisters’ “faith, foresight and
flexibility” provided the foundation for a future we celebrate today.
This same foundation provides the strength and direction we need to overcome the
challenges we face in light of today’s ailing economy. “Faith, foresight and flexibility”
invite us to be innovative and creative in carrying out our healing mission. As a result, our
commitment to providing The Dear Neighbor with compassionate, clinically superior care never waivers.
Recently, several St. Joseph Hospital programs received national recognition for clinical excellence.
Despite our challenges, these accomplishments underscore our ongoing commitment to achieving
Perfect Care, Sacred Encounters and Healthiest Communities:
• In 2007, 2008 and again in 2009, St. Joseph Hospital has been recognized as one of “America’s Best
Hospitals” for Orthopedic Care by U. S.News & World Report. No other hospital in Orange County has
achieved this outstanding national distinction.
• In July 2009, St. Joseph Hospital’s Stroke Center received a “Certificate of Distinction for Primary
Stroke Centers” from The Joint Commission, the nation’s leading accrediting body for safety and quality
in healthcare organizations. The Stroke Center met scrupulous criteria for managing stroke care, and
possesses the critical elements needed to achieve long-term success in improving stroke outcomes.
• In June 2009, St. Joseph Hospital’s Chest Pain Center received accreditation from the Society of Chest
Pain Centers by exceeding nationally recognized standards for rapidly treating patients for chest pain.
• In June 2009, St. Joseph Hospital became Orange County’s first “Baby Friendly” birth facility by
promoting breastfeeding and bonding practices. This quality award is presented by Baby Friendly
USA, a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization and the United Nations
Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
• In June 2009, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery named St. Joseph Hospital
a Bariatric Center of Excellence. This designation is based on the program’s surgical processes and
excellent outcomes.
As we celebrate our 80th Anniversary these accomplishments remind us that “faith, foresight and
flexibility” are essential qualities for sustaining our ministry and providing quality care to the community
we were all called to serve.

chemotherapy and radiation. During this frightening
process, Dr. Harness invited Clara to attend the Circles of
Life Fashion Show, an annual fundraiser for The Center
for Cancer Prevention and Treatment at St. Joseph
Hospital, which features cancer survivors and current
and past cancer patients as the models. There he
whispered to her that one day she, too, would become
a cancer survivor model in the show. This gave Clara
another glimmer of hope.
During chemotherapy Clara began to build friendships
with other cancer patients and found great
comfort in sharing her faith and giving them hope.
She enrolled in English and computer classes to take
her mind off her illness. Every Friday she would have
chemotherapy, recuperate over the weekend, and go
back to school on Monday.
Three years later Clara is healthy, in remission,
cherishing every day of her life and loving her
children. She defines her experience at the clinic as
“marvelous” because the staff was always optimistic,
supported her faith, and gave her confidence and
hope. She thanks God for St. Joseph Hospital and
the doctors for saving her life. Clara’s hopefulness had
many rewards, one of which was her debut as a model
at this year’s Circles of Life Fashion Show on June 28 –
and a beautiful model at that.

St. Joseph Hospital continues to serve the many health needs of our
community with services such as the comprehensive renal disease
program, designed to assist all stages of chronic kidney disease, from
pediatric dialysis through kidney transplant.
Kidney transplants have been performed at St. Joseph Hospital since
1973. Our highly successful Kidney Transplant Center has completed
an average of 35 transplants each year for the past two decades.
Under the leadership of Ervin Ruzics, M.D., the St. Joseph Hospital
Kidney Transplant Program has maintained a 100% one-year graft
and patient survival rate for the last 5 reporting periods as reported by
the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients. St. Joseph Hospital’s
Kidney Transplant Program is the only program in the United States to
achieve this rating five years in a row – a wonderful example of Perfect Care.
Building and sustaining a tradition of perfect care, innovation, and a healthier community
is not something that happens quickly but one which is nurtured over time. These
traditions have not been created by the hospital alone. They are sustained through the

Kidney Transplant Services
On May 14, St. Joseph Hospital hosted the 11th Annual President’s
Reception at the Turnip Rose in Costa Mesa. More than 100 friends
and supporters of the hospital attended the event which featured a
presentation by Ervin Ruzics, M.D., Medical Director of the Kidney
Transplant Center at St. Joseph Hospital. Dr. Ruzics talked about the
kidney transplant program and our outstanding survival rate. Guests
also heard from Tom Bender, a past renal services patient, who
spoke of his kidney transplant experience at St. Joseph Hospital, for
which he had high remarks.
Sister Susan Trezek presented the invocation and Larry Ainsworth,
President and Chief Executive Officer of St. Joseph Hospital, thanked
guests for their continued support and spoke about the importance of
“Sacred Encounters” – emphasizing that these encounters are what
set us apart from other hospitals by focusing on providing patients
with a sense of human dignity, community and success, through
compassionate care.
Presidential Partners is a society of friends who provide exceptional
leadership in support of St. Joseph Hospital through their annual

BOARD PROFILES
The Foundation Board Welcomes
Three New Members
Julia Motherway, M.D., is keeping up a family tradition. Her father, William Collins, M.D., a
gastroenterologist, has served on staff at the hospital for decades. “St. Joseph Hospital has
always been a part of my life between my dad’s involvement and the care family members
have received over the years,” said Motherway, an internist who frequently provides service to
La Amistad de Jose Family Health Center.
Motherway first became involved with the hospital working as a ‘gofer’ in the Emergency
Department in college. “That opportunity and now as a physician myself, helped me recognize the
important role that St. Joseph Hospital plays in the community.”
“The biggest challenges I foresee are not particular to the hospital,” says Motherway.
“Fundraising is difficult due to the economy. However, this is the most important time to show our
staying power and to advance the Sisters’ mission to serve the ‘dear neighbor.’ As a physician currently
working at La Amistad, I can tell you, the need is great and we are here to help.”
Terry Gilmore and his wife, Mary Ann, have been active in the community, particularly with Catholic
ministries. Naturally, their support extended to St. Joseph Hospital when their children were born there.
Terry retired after 35 years as Vice President and Managing Director of Orange County
Operations for Prudential Financial. As a Foundation Board Member and previous Hospital
Leadership Council member, he sees his role as an advocate for the hospital, encouraging others
to lend their support to ensure that the hospital continues to meet the needs of the community.
“St. Joseph Hospital has always maintained a high quality of service, which requires an unprecedented
level of support.” Gilmore is active in the Order of Malta, a Catholic service group whose goal is to serve
the sick and the poor. “I see my support of St. Joseph Hospital as serving that very same goal.”
Janice Ramsay-Gonzales became involved with St. Joseph Hospital when her employer, PDC
Facilities, Inc., began construction at the hospital. “Working on St. Joseph Hospital’s campus every
day allowed me to see how important the hospital is to this community,” she said. “As Construction
Administrator, I felt that our work on behalf of the hospital helped make a difference and I wanted
to continue to support the hospital.”
She started working with Todos on events such as the Croquet Tournament, Seasonal Soiree,
the Golf Tournament and the hospital’s Annual Benefit which she co-chaired in 2006 and 2007.
During her tenure, the Auction increased its fundraising by $80,000.
“I initially joined Todos because it seemed like a great group of people who might not be able to
make large, individual donations,” she said. “However, together, Todos can make million dollar pledges.”
As the economy slows, Ramsay-Gonzales realizes that philanthropic support will be needed more
than ever. “It is vital to keep the mission of St. Joseph Hospital at the forefront of everything we do.”
The Foundation would like to welcome these new leaders to the board and looks forward to the
honor of working with each of them.

RETIRING BOARD MEMBER PROFILE
George and Chloe Barr
For more than two decades, George and Chloe Barr of Laguna Beach have been active
supporters of St. Joseph Hospital. Now, as they prepare for a well-deserved retirement
from their voluntary service, their contributions will serve as a legacy to others. Through
their personal philanthropy, active involvement on the Foundation Board of Directors, and
service on innumerable Foundation committees, they have demonstrated, by example,
what it means to care for the “dear neighbor.”
As grateful patients, The Barrs are major contributors to the hospital, helping to
underwrite the Annual Benefit (now called, Celebration!) and the Circles of Life Fashion
Show. Chloe, a cancer survivor, even participated as a fashion show model to demonstrate
to others that there is, indeed, life after a diagnosis of cancer. Their consistent support
and enthusiasm for the hospital soon led to their nomination to the Foundation Board of
Directors.
“In my mind, George and Chloe personify what it means to be a philanthropic supporter
of the hospital’s mission,” said Chris Layton, Chair of the Foundation Board of Directors.
“From their support of the development of the hospital Master Plan through completion of
The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment, they have been with us every step of the
way.” As former president of Barr Lumber and the O.L. Halsell Foundation, George’s unique
business and financial perspective was of great value to the Board.
As Board members since 2003, George and Chloe were instrumental in helping to
raise philanthropic support for the new Patient Care Center. In addition to their personal
gifts to the campaign, they were tireless in their dedication to the project, bringing in
support from their many friends and colleagues.
Each a cancer survivor, they were equally passionate about helping to muster
philanthropic support for the building of The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment.
In addition to the campaign, Chloe volunteered to participate in the patient interview
process that led to the hospital’s achievement of Magnet Status for Nursing Excellence.
“I think one of the highlights for us was when the hospital received magnet nursing
status,” said Chloe. “Patient care is such an integral part of what makes St. Joseph such
an outstanding hospital. And nursing is so important. Another highlight was the opening
of the Patient Care Center—that was unbelievable. And, of course, the Cancer Center is
exceptional.”
Chloe remembers what it was like when she was being treated for cancer.
“I’m not a Catholic but I remember how kind Sister Frances Dunn was and how she
would check up on me. I saw, first-hand, just how exceptional the service was and how
the influence of the Sisters permeates the entire hospital. There are other fine hospitals in
the area but I don’t think any of them come close to the compassion exhibited by those
who work at St. Joseph.”
In 2008, to honor their many years of exemplary service, George and Chloe were
recognized by the Foundation as Outstanding Volunteers during National Philanthropy Day.

The 2009 Circles of Life Fashion Show and Luncheon on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at the
Anaheim Marriott was another successful and memorable afternoon! This year’s event,
“Believe & Inspire” featured current and former St. Joseph Hospital cancer patients as the
models. Their stories, courage and confidence inspired everyone in attendance as they
strutted down the runway.
Proceeds of over $60,000 supported The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment at
St. Joseph Hospital. Funds from previous shows have been used to purchase critical
equipment and subsidize care for cancer patients who need financial assistance.
Over 1,000 guests enjoyed this incredible event included a champagne reception,
opportunity drawing, luncheon and a fashion show which brought the guests to their feet in
celebration of our models. Save the date for next year’s event on Sunday, June 27, 2010 at
the Hilton Anaheim.

Celebration 2009! will be held on Saturday, September
26, 2009 at the Hilton Anaheim. Proceeds from the
event will benefit the Heart & Vascular Center and
The Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment at
St. Joseph Hospital.
This memorable evening will be a true celebration of
our accomplishments and the journey of the Sisters of
St. Joseph from Le Puy, France, to where the hospital
is today. Guests will enjoy a four-course dinner,
opportunity drawing, silent and live auctions and
energizing entertainment that will have our guests
giving a standing ovation! This year the Spirit of
St. Joseph Award will be presented to Dr. and Mrs.
Michael Abdalla and Dr. and Mrs. James Padova.
They will be recognized for their embodiment of the
Spirit of St. Joseph – an awareness of the needs of
others and willingness to share personal resources
through their involvement and philanthropic support
of the hospital.
Individual tickets are $350 per person and tables of
10 are $3,500. Sponsorship packages, underwriting,
gift in kind and advertising opportunities are available.

Light Up A Life 2009
The Light Up A Life Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at
the St. Joseph Hospital Park located between the parking structure and hospital. This event
highlights the compassionate care and support for St. Joseph Hospital Hospice programs.
More than 250 guests and friends of the hospital are expected to attend the event which will
feature holiday music, light refreshments and the annual tree lighting. Speakers will reflect on
the vital role that hospice programs play in helping families and patients during difficult times.
Since its inception more than 25 years ago, more than $1 million has been raised from this
event. Contributions from Light Up A Life help to support the work of St. Joseph Hospice - an
interdisciplinary team of highly trained professionals dedicated to providing quality end-of-life
care to patients and families in the community. Hospice programs help patients with a terminal
illness receive the support and care needed to enjoy every moment they have with loved ones
and friends. In addition, the Bereavement Department provides grief support to families.

and navigation. Check out a searchable Clinical
Outcomes section with St. Joseph Hospital and

physicians in videocasts; a detailed, interactive
map of the campus and much more. This latest
generation website of nearly 2,000 pages is a
living document that will be continually updated
